Chapter 14 --- Epilogue: Back to the Nostromo
At Kim’s house, Ripley had been told about her situation in detail. Kim had even played the DVD.
“You have options,” Kim told the space crewman. “You can go back with complete knowledge of what will happen, which will allow you to be proactive. The Alien was at the face-hugger stage when you left, so it would be comparatively easy to defeat at that point. You have to kill it before it breaks out, though I don’t know how Kane can be saved. You guys already tried taking it off him. And I’m not sure what you will do about Ash. The whole thing was his fault anyway.” She shrugged. “As another option, you can just not go back at all and can make another universe your home. There are a shitload to choose from now.”
Ripley shook her head. “I don’t know, Kim. From what you said, most of the universes are at a comparatively primitive stage of technology. It would be like you going back to live in medieval times. And everyone else in the crew would still die.”
“True. You’ll just have to decide what you want to do. We’re willing to help in any way we can.”

Ripley found herself back in her cabin on the Nostromo. The clock indicated that what the Freefallers had told her was true. Only a few seconds of ship’s time had passed since she ripped out of her universe. The floor of the shower was still completely wet.
Ripley was still exhausted from all the sex and laid out on the bunk for a while. Then she set an alarm to wake her up at a time when everyone else would be asleep. There were all kinds of duties to perform, but she locked her door, after placing a note on it indicating she was sick and had taken medication to knock herself out. It was no big deal. Any of those things could also be done by Dallas or Ash if necessary. Before going to sleep, she wrote a detailed report about Ash’s hidden agenda to take the Alien back to civilization. She couldn’t actually provide the evidence, because she didn’t have access to the computer files, but she told Dallas where to find it. She transmitted the report with a time delay, to be received after it was all over.
Hours later, she woke up to the alarm. She dressed, and made her way down to the infirmary. Kane was lying there, with the thing on his face.
Ripley stood there for a while, unable to force herself to go through with it. The story portrayed on the DVD exactly matched the events that had already occurred. There was no reason to assume that the future events would deviate from those shown in the remainder of the DVD. She had decided on a plan of action based on them. However, actually implementing it was something else again.
After a little more anguish and soul-searching, Ripley retrieved a gurney and transferred Kane onto it. She was careful not to disturb the leads to the medical instrumentation as she strained to manhandle the the comatose man by herself. Once she broke the connection, it would set off alarms in the cabins of the officers. She had to wait until the last second to do that, to give herself as much time as possible.
Finally Kane was ready to roll. Taking a deep breath, Ripley pulled out the medical leads and pushed the gurney as quickly as she could, heading for the nearest airlock.
The medical instrumentation was going berserk of course, alarms all over the place. “Life functions terminated,” the medical computer kept insisting, then the electronic voice faded behind her.
Ripley made her way to the airlock, pushed the gurney into it, and started the cycle. From the inside.
Now that she was committed, she relaxed and strolled around the airlock. A moment or two later, she looked through the heavy glass window back into the ship, to find Dallas staring at her, and at Kane, with shocked eyes. He was saying something, but of course she couldn’t hear. She and Kane were in the airlock without pressure suits, guaranteed death. And the cycle couldn’t be stopped, at least not without a complicated override sequence that would take too long.
It had to be this way. No one would ever believe that she had saved all of their lives by getting rid of Kane, on the advice of teenagers from another dimension, or that he would have had a much more painful death mere hours from now anyway. She would be turned over to the authorities at the next port and brought up on murder charges. She did not intend to go through all that. Much simpler to just go into the airlock with him. If she was confirmed dead and floating in space, it would be a little difficult to prosecute her.
Ripley smiled and waved at Dallas, trying to create the impression that she had lost her mind, that she had no idea of the danger she was in. The crazed suicide note she had left in her cabin would reinforce the insanity idea. It was better to be remembered as someone who snapped under pressure than as a cold-blooded murderer. Of course, there was a danger that Dallas would dismiss her report on Ash as the rantings of a lunatic, but if he looked at the files, they would speak for themselves.
Now that Dallas had seen her, she moved away from the window, out of his sight. The outer door was offset, so it wouldn’t be possible for him to actually see her spewed out into space. But there was nowhere else she could go, so her death was assured. When they were able to get into the airlock, it would be completely empty. No more Kane, no more Ripley. Case closed.
Before showing herself to Dallas, Ripley had taken off the backpack containing all of the belongings she wanted to keep and had tossed it over where it wasn’t visible. She picked it up now and pushed the “Teleport” button on her Kimmunicator, having set the coordinates before leaving her cabin. The Interdimensional Grappler took over from there and a split second later she was back in Kim Possible’s living room.
Kim was waiting for her. “Did it go okay?”
Ripley sighed. “Yeah. Though it’ll be a long time before I have a good night’s sleep. It had to be done, but that doesn’t mean it was easy.”
“I hear you. Anybody with even a trace of humanity would have a hard time deliberately killing a comatose man, even if he would be dead in hours anyway.” Kim kissed Ripley. “Well, keep in touch.”
“You bet.” Ripley made a call on her Kimmunicator. “Okay, bring me in.” After receiving the homing signal, she found “Follow Last Signal” in the menus. “See you later, Kim.”
Another disorienting shift and she was back in space.
Kaylee hugged her. “A big welcome to Serenity’s newest crewmember.”
