The guys strapped on their proton packs. Egon ran into the lab, shoved something into his pocket, and ran back out to join his companions. They opted for the stairs instead of the pole, where they’d be easy targets. Egon felt his insides lurch when he saw that they had a hostage. It was Janine. Slimer was hovering above them circling, wringing his hands and crying. “No hurt Janine! No hurt Janine!”
The guys came the rest of the way down the stairs with their hands raised above their heads. ‘Dana’ was sitting at Janine’s desk. ‘Louis’ was standing behind her holding Janine by the throat with her arm bent uncomfortably behind her. She was grimacing from the pain.
Peter stared hard at them. He just couldn’t believe this was happening again.
“Greetings, sub-creatures. So nice of you to join us.”
“Hello, Zuul.” Egon was the picture of pure calm. It was his complete control that kept his colleagues composed. If the sight of Janine’s ordeal wasn’t freaking him out, then he had a plan.
“Ah, the smart one.” She leaned back in Janine’s chair to look at him better. “What an interesting conundrum you present. You are a human. A sub-creature. Yet you are the first creature in a thousand millennia to ever banish our master. And not only our master. You discovered how to defeat the Carpathian. Very kind of you. Gozer would not have been pleased if his host were taken away by another being.”
“Yeah, well your master’s gonna be disappointed anyway because you’re not gettin’ the kid!” Peter snarled at her.
“Hmm. I remember you. You are the one with feelings for my host. You are rather intelligent as well. You discovered my host’s duplicity; I sensed it the other night. But being a typical lowly human male, you could not resist me when I seduced you. I know you enjoyed it. In fact, you may make love to me again if you like, sub-creature.” She leaned forward in the chair and writhed suggestively. “I enjoyed our bed sport, too.”
Peter’s hand itched to grab his thrower. Zuul could see it. She smiled even broader. His lack of cooperation could give them an excuse to snap the red-haired woman’s neck. That would anger the smart one into making a foolish mistake. She knew just what to tell him too. “She thought it was yours you know.”
“What are you talking about?”
“The child. She thought it was hers and yours at first. Now she thinks it is her husband’s. But it isn’t. The child is ours. Born of our love and our love for our master.”
“What the hell are you talking about?” Peter was losing patience. He saw Egon and Ray exchange a significant look. “What the hell is she talking about?!”
“Later, Peter.”
The psychologist frowned, but he didn’t ask again.
“Let her go.” Winston’s look was threatening. “She has nothing to do with this.”
“Oh, I’m afraid she does.” Vinz Clortho increased the pressure on her arm and throat. Janine winced. “She keeps you in line.” He released her throat and grabbed her hair, jerking her head to the side. She cried out in pain. Vinz kissed her exposed throat then sucked on her skin.
Egon’s posture stiffened, but he kept his cool. “If you harm her, you will never get the child.”
“If you don’t give us the child, we will kill her.”
“Then we have reached an impasse.”
“So it would seem.” Zuul smiled. “It need not be this way. She does not deserve your loyalty. She is a traitorous whore.”
“Right.” Egon’s sarcasm was unmistakable.
“It is true, sub-creature. She has been with my beloved Key Master repeatedly.”
“We’ve heard that one before,” Winston snorted with laughter.
“You mock me?”
“No, we just don’t believe you.”
Vinz tore open Janine’s shirt and cupped her breast lovingly. “She was so delicious. She fucked me viciously and she loved it. She begged me not to stop. I know she would do it again if I just asked. Wouldn’t you love?”
But Janine was not listening. When Vinz fondled her, she was filled with such a feeling of revulsion, she thought she would be sick. She was torn between feelings of fear, disgust, and anger. Mostly anger. ‘AH! I could kill them both!’ she thought. The anger continued to build in her, and then the most amazing feeling began to course within her. It felt like . . . like . . . an orgasm. ‘Oh my God! It’s happening again!’
Janine burst into light. Bright rays of red energy exploded out of her. Zuul and Vinz were taken completely off guard. Vinz released her in shock and pain. Janine fell to the ground, still glowing like a brush fire.
Egon decided that this was the time to strike. He shot Zuul then Vinz with the tranquilizer gun he had in his pocket. They both ripped out the darts, howling with enraged pain. Vinz growled at Egon. His eyes glowed a sinister shade of blood red. He stalked toward the physicist. Winston and Ray charged him. He threw them aside easily. Winston landed hard against Ecto-1 and Ray was knocked unconscious for about a minute by his impact with the lockers. Peter pulled his thrower and prepared to fire. “Sorry Louis!” He switched on his pack, took careful aim . . . and then he took a blow to the back of the head from Zuul.
Egon backed away from the male. His back collided with the file cabinet. ‘I’m dead meat.’
“Don’t touch him!” Janine stood up and placed herself between Egon and Vinz. The creature laughed. As he continued to laugh, his voice sounded less and less like Louis and more and more like . . . something else.
“Get out of my way. I’ll be with you in a moment, bitch.”
Janine lifted her hand. A small ball of red energy began to form in the palm of her hand. The energy quy iny increased in size until it was like a soccer ball. And then she let fly.
The powerful beam of energy she hit Vinz with blasted him off his feet. He slammed against the firepole, losing consciousness. Janine looked down at her hand in disbelief. “Holy crap!”
“Indeed.” Zuul had come up behind her. Until the day she died, Janine Melnitz would never forget the sight of a possessed Dana Barrett snarling hatefully in her face before throwing her across the room. She flew over the desk and landed with a sickening thud on the concrete floor of the garage.
Egon lost it. He pulled his thrower and prepared to fire. Peter grabbed his arm. They tussled over the thrower. Ray and Winston tried to break them up. In the commotion, Zuul grabbed Vinz and slipped out.
The battle was won, but the war was far from over.
And now they had a casualty. The others were able to calm Peter and Egon, but the friends scowled menacingly at each other.
“You could have killed Dana!”
“She could have killed Janine! You weren’t so concerned when you were gonna shoot Louis!”
“Guys, stop!” Winston stood between them and placed a hand on each of their shoulders. “We need to get her to a hospital. She’s not responsive.” Winston snatched up the phone and called 9-1-1.
“I need to call Lois. You guys get a grip!” Ray went up to the lab to call his aunt. He told Lois to take Alice and Oscar and go to Janine’s family’s house. Alice insisted that she wanted to come help. Ray didn’t want to argue, so he decided to come get her, rather than have Lois come anywhere near the firehouse with the baby.
The ambulance came quickly to get Janine. She never woke up or responded.

Janine’s condition was stable, but she remained in her coma. Her guys stayed by her side all day and into the night. Alice came over in the afternoon to give them moral support. They refused to leave the hospital when visiting hours was over, so the nurses finally gave in and just brought them blankets. Janine had no roommate, so the guys insisted that Alice take the other bed.
One by one, they all drifted to sleep. Everyone but Alice. She was afraid to sleep, so she watched over her friends instead. When Peter woke from a fitful sleep, she hushed him back into slumber. It wasn’t until Peter was sound asleep again that she noticed Ray staring at her. She smiled sadly at him and held out her hand.
“He’s having nightmares about Dana and Janine. He thinks they’re not going to make it, and that it’s his fault.”
Ray got up off the floor, stretched, and walked over to sit on the edge of her bed. “Poor Pete. He’s determined to beat himself up about this.”
“That’s fairly typical for Peter.”
“True. But it doesn’t make it any easier for any of us to see.”
“No. Some things are very hard to be forced to see.” Alice stared off at the wall for a moment. Then to Ray’s surprise, she got up and kissed each of his friends on the forehead, including Janine. She lay back down and stared up into his questioning eyes. “Ray, I need to tell you something, and I hope you won’t be angry with me.”
Ray leaned down to kiss Alice gently on the lips. “I won’t be angry,” he replied with a smile.
Alice blushed furiously. She smiled and giggled, letting out a small, unladylike snort. “I’m sorry. I didn’t think you’d ever do that. And look how I act when you do!”
Ray beamed at her and chuckled. “So what did you want to tell me?”
Alice’s smile faltered a bit, but she did not chicken out. “I suppose you’ve noticed that I haven’t been myself lately.”
“Yeah?”
“Well, something happened to me that hasn’t happened since I was a small child. I had a premonition . . . about all of you. It was a dream I had after we spoke on the phone Halloween. I dreamt that you’d all die. I had only one other dream like that before. It was of my mother’s death, and I was right. I might not have taken it so seriously if it hadn’t been for the . . . the horrible things we saw . . . in that house in Arkham.”
Ray’s eyes widened, and he nodded in understanding. He’d had his fair share of nightmares about that too, especially about the murdered toddler. Alice sighed guiltily and continued. “I haven’t told you, because I thought it would make you all paranoid, perhaps bring about the prediction, sort of like in all the old Greek myths where trying to change fate brings it about. But now it seems my silence has cost Janine dearly.”
Ray’s smile faded. He didn’t really know what to say. “Oh.”
“Egon had commented to me that he was surprised at my fear because nothing ever seemed to scare me. Well, he was almost right. There is one thing that scares me to death: the thought of losing all of you. Especially you Ray.” Ray blushed and looked away. “Ray, I want you to promise me that you’ll all be careful.”
“Of course. And now knowing about your premonition, we’ll be extra careful.”
“Then you believe me?” she asked timidly.
Ray’s features softened. “Of course! You’re the last person any of us would ever doubt.”
She smiled again. “Okay.”
“Okay.”
“Great, so now we know what’s been bugging you,” Peter grumbled from the floor. “Can we get some sleep now?”
Alice threw a pillow at him. He tucked it under his head and curled up to fall back to sleep. Egon snickered. Alice looked him in the eye and mouthed ‘I’m sorry.’ Egon waved a dismissive hand and smiled at her before settling back to go to sleep. Winston smiled serenely, but did not open his eyes.
Ray curled up next to Alice and went straight to sleep. Once Alice was the only one awake again, she looked over at the other bed and smiled. “Hang in there, Janine.”

In the ruins of the Ivo Shandor building, Zuul kept vigilant watch over her beloved Key Master. When he came to, she stroked his head and smiled. “My Love.”
“What did the witch do to me?”
“She has powers. I was unaware of this. I do not believe my host ever bore witness to that.”
Vinz rubbed his head. “Nor mine.” He felt a painful lump at the base of his skull. “What will we do now, Love? We cannot use the witch to force them to reveal the child to us.”
She stroked the large bump on the back of his head and smiled wickedly. “Do not worry yourself, Beloved. I have probed my host’s memories and I have thought of another way to accomplish our goal.”
“Have you?” he smirked.
“Yes. I have another captive in mind.” She leaned over and kissed him roughly. “Come. There are tasks that need doing.”
