Chapter 135
Most of the Northern warriors followed Torluq and Senneyok when they left the South Pole. Torluq wanted to stick to the methods of traditional warfare as they were proving to be successful this far. Senneyok’s main objective was finding the tribesmen captured when the Fire Nation attacked their home. Both groups had been happy to separate from Hakoda - neither wanted to fight alongside women.
Others were too enraged to remain under Hakoda’s direct leadership after he adopted Sila and Pilitak into the Southern Water Tribe and blessed their marriage. Sila’s father had already promised her to Senneyok. It was unheard of for a woman to choose her own husband and get married without her father’s approval. It was especially insulting that the woman was the child of Chief Arnook’s younger brother; a highly respected warrior and council member that Hakoda disrespected.
Those that remained with Hakoda weren’t thrilled with the liberties he granted women but they understood uppity koalaotters were of no consequence when it came to visiting terror on the Fire Nation. They were eager to shed their humanity after losing family during the Siege of the North. It was mainly due to murder but there were several warriors seeking vengeance over the subsequent shunning and suicides of sisters, daughters, or wives that had been raped by Fire Nation soldiers.
They too soon came to appreciate having the women alongside them. When they got injured someone was there to heal them. Unlike Torluq’s group they could get up and kill several more Firebenders. Their reputations as demons spread faster and further.
The Earth Kingdom prisoners they rescued spread the word about their saviors while the Fire Nation whispered about missing ships and colonies that had disappeared.
After Chu-hua’s mad dash to distance herself from what had spooked her and the animals she demaned that they dock and search the ship once the sun rose. They found grappling hook marks on one of the rails and a homing hawk hidden among the dragonhawks.
Chu-hua lifted the bird and stroked its feathers, “Clever, they even dyed your plummage.”
“The rest of you continue searching. Send Huang and Jianguo to me,” she said while the bird back where it was found.
When Zhao 1 arrived at the aviary Commander Huang was standing next to Chu-hua. She began making orders as soon as she saw him, “Jianguo, send out one of our hawks with a message for all in their command report to our current coordinates. Do not use my name to sign it, use the chop imprinted with the nightingale-angler.”
“Yes Admiral, understood,” Zhao 1 replied. Homing hawks were very closely related to dragonhawks. They could be used to send messages but were primarily used for long distance tracking. A mated pair was separated and after a few days or week’s time the one kept by the trackers was released to find its mate.
The seal Chu-hua had asked him to use explained why all in their command was requested. They had been attacked in the first port and now the Ursa was being tracked. It was most likely they would be attacked by a large group of rebels. Chu-hua was planning on releasing the homing hawk unharmed so it would lead the Fire Nation directly to them. Nightingale-anglers were not birds, they were predatory lizards. They would bat at their whiskers with their paws while hissing to mimic the sound of a nightingale. They would wait until the real bird began to sing and follow its song to its next meal. He had used them often in his last assignment.
As if sensing his apprehension, Chu-hua smiled and patted his shoulder, “You are my communications officer, Jianguo. You are no longer the angler, your voice is sweet but you have more sense than the average nightingale. You can become whatever bird you wish but there is a reason I placed you among the dragonhawks.”
She tapped him lightly on the cheeks, “Now stop daydreaming and go run my errand like a good little boy.”
“Yes Admiral, your wish is my command,” he responded with a bow before leaving.
Chu-hua watched Zhao 1 leave before speaking to her first mate, “He and his brother are such good children. It is truly a pleasure to have such them onboard my ship. I wish I could say the same for my little cousins.”
Commander Huang laughed, “Is it really fair to compare them?”
“If this was truly my ship, the twins would be the only set of siblings remaining on board. The other two would be piles of ashes at the bottom of the ocean. And do not think me unaware of your diversions,” She replied raising an eyebrow at him.
He paled.
“I know how you are with your pets. I will not have dissention among my crew. I appointed you First Mate because you are a brilliant man. Do not disappoint me,” Chu-hua warned.
“Yes Admiral,” he replied deferrently.
Commander Huang waited until Admiral Chu-hua left to smile faintly. There was no need for dissention. Now that they had reached the Earth Kingdom most of the men would spend their time and energy at the local brothels leaving the gorgeous blue eyed boy all to him.
Even with the unscheduled stop the Ursa arrived in the next port a day ahead of schedule. Just as in the seedy port where Katara stole the Waterbending scroll from the pirates she and Zuko remained on the ship and let everyone else exit. Zuko immediately left the room and told the ones chosen to stay behind he would watch the prisoners for a few hours to give them a chance to go into town. He let Sokka and Aang out of their cells then took them to the bathing room. They showered and sat in the tubs without uttering single word to Katara. Sokka turned his back to her when she placed her hands in the water to work in their injuries.
“Sokka talk to me please,” Katara begged, “I can explain.”
When he didn’t respond she turned to her friend, “Aang you have to believe I would never betray any of our friends.”
Both of them continued to ignore her even after they went to Zuko’s room. They ate and only talked to each other. When Zuko stepped into the bathroom Katara tearfully explained that she had seen Haru and Tyro in the last town but didn’t tell the Fire Nation who they were. She explained that she didn’t meant to give them Haru’s name she only wanted Sokka to stop looking at her like she was worthless.
Her brother continued to do just that but Aang was starting to feel sorry for her, “Katara, why does Sokka think that you betrayed Haru and Tyro to save yourself?”
Katara chose her words carefully before answering, “You know how Zuko told everyone I was his concubine so I’d have some privacy while we were on the ship?”
The Avatar nodded.
“In exchange for that he’s planning on making the world believe I really am his concubine and that I’ve betrayed you. He thinks that will make people stop believing that you can defeat the Fire Nation and end the war. Yesterday he figured out that Toph is with Iroh. We were being followed and I didn’t want anyone to overhear us so I took us to the middle of a sandbar. I didn’t know the people following us were Haru and Tyro or that someone would try to free you and Sokka.”
“The ship’s commanding officer also had us followed. Her soldiers found Haru’s headband. Zuko said some terrible things about me and Sokka was looking at me like he is now. I was able to tell Haru and Tyro that you were injured and on the Ursa when we returned the ostrich horses. I’m sorry. I never meant for them to die. I thought they would be able to escape since they weren’t captured then. Haru is a common name. I didn’t think they could find them using so little,” she sobbed.
“But Sokka called you a whore,” Aang said with uncertainty.
“To convince people I’m his concubine I have to hold Zuko’s hand and let him hug me,” she said quietly.
Aang’s stomach twisted at the thought of Katara holding hands and hugging another boy. He looked at her then at Sokka and back to her. “Two of our friends died Katara. I’m not sure I’m ready to forgive you yet.”
