Chapter 134
Katara wanted to believe what she’d seen in the bathroom had been a dream. Spirits such as La were beyond the day to day actions of humans. The repeated raids on the Southern Water Tribe and La’s inaction when the Fire Nation first attacked the North Pole were proof the ancient spirits had no care for the petty lives of mortals, but he had saved her.
He could have very easily let her die after the other spirit saved Zuko but he didn’t. La knew her. He called her Little Katara and restored her to full health. He gave her the presence of mind to answer Admiral Chu-hua’s questions in a manner that did not end the life of her brother. She could not see them, but she still felt as though someone was watching over her.
It was a feeling she often got after their encounter with Hei Bai. Aang had explained that the spirit world wasn’t as separated from the mortal realm as people liked to believe. There were many places that acted as portals and objects that acted as anchors that most people could not see or access. Even as the Avatar he missed many of them but his ability to detect them got stronger after spending time with Roku, meeting Hei Bai and each time he crossed into the spirit world. Katara and Sokka’s sensitivity was mostly a result of secondary exposure.
Aang explained it was nothing to worry about since most spirits weren’t bad. Like Hei Bai they were merely trying to find the things they’d lost that they had sworn to protect. If they couldn’t find the exact person or object they’d cling to something or someone who reminded them of it and use them as a substitute. The spirit that had been with La and Yue smiled and said she was found before filling her soul with a spectacular sensation of warmth.
The Waterbender slept soundly that night. Bingwen had ordered that a cot be brought in for her to sleep on and that Zuko not touch her for three days to ensure the poison was out of her system. Even thought she had not been granted her wishes for death she had drawn the attention of a protective spirit.
She was accepting all the help she could get to get Sokka, Aang and Appa of the ship.
Like La, Agni rarely visited the mortal realm in spirit. She was content to let a physical form remain in the mortal realm spread out among those who carried the blood of the Fire Nation royal family. But one of her most powerful physical manifestations had already been lost, two others had been stripped of their destinies and a third was becoming almost as twisted as the fourth. The portions spread among the various bastards weakened with every generation so she only received their feedback upon their death.
The spirit decided to roam the ship, dogging the steps of its captain as she walked it. This one contained more of the undiluted blood from Roku’s line than Zuko and Agni could tell the woman was aware of her. She followed Chu-hua to Azula. Agni was not surprised the part of her spirit that dwelt in the princess turned and waved. It was done without the knowledge of Azula’s conscious mind and the princess continued to tease her friends completely unaware she’d been interrupted.
Most of the other Firebenders stopped and saluted the admiral but quite a few of them stared at the empty space Agni occupied. They were unable to comprehend what they knew was there. Sages; they had the gift of insight and should have been trained as such but under Ozai’s illegitimate reign they were soldiers. It saddened the Sun Spirit to see how many of her children’s inner flames were lackluster as a result of his rule. Conquest and domination were not the only reasons they were blessed with the gift of fire.
Agni followed Chu-hua to the lowest deck. The beasts in the stables became agitated. One of the humans whose ancestors were blessed by the dragons to communicate with animals emerged to comfort them. The gift of fire lay dormant in his soul. He did not have the ability to bend. Agni focused her attention on the occupants of the cells. Another of Sokkaya’s line was present so was the Avatar. Agni shifted back to a male form and grabbed the parts of each of them that belonged to him. The Avatar was unharmed but afraid. He had yet to learn fire.
Agni allowed other boy’s pain to come into him. He had endured far worse treatment than his sister. Agni sat with him all night watching the number of her people who came to him and their intentions. Most of them wanted to torture him simply for their own amusement. A few were looking for a quick and easy way to vent their frustration. Even less came out of a sense of duty to a prisoner. Only one came out of concern for him.
Agni was surprised to learn the girl was one she shared with Vayu. Like the gift of Fire, the gift of air lay dormant; however, the presence of air was much stronger.
Agni watched the girl care for the prisoner then returned to the spirit world to prepare for sunrise. Vayu, the spirit of the wind, had been the most vocal in warning her that the war was not the way to spread Fire Nation peace and prosperity that Soizin claimed it to be. She had dismissed the warning. Agni had watched Vayu weep as the people of Air’s culture was destroyed by the spoiled son she shared with La.
Now Sozin’s descendants were now doing battle against those blessed by Hou-T’u and La. The true children of Vayu did not exist any longer. The parts of the Agni that resided in Iroh, Zuko and various others told him the horror of what they’d seen, and what the war was doing to his chosen land.
The sun was the proudest of all the gods. Ending the war would be admitting that she and her children were wrong and that La had been right 90 years ago when he began sacrificing his own children to stop hers.
Author’s Note: Agni, La, Hou-T’u and Vayu have no true form, species, or gender. The pronouns will shift along with them.
