Chapter 129
Katara didn’t sleep that night. She spent most of it tossing and turning as her dreams tormented her. In one they had never found Wan Shi Tong’s library, in another they had never found Appa, in another the invasion had been successful, in another she followed through on her instincts to jump into the ocean and fight when she realized they were being followed. Sokka and Aang escaped safely. They reunited with Toph and Iroh and ended the war. She watched everything while sitting between La and her mother in the spirit world. She died to assure their freedom. Being reunited with her mother so quickly was her reward for being inducted into La’s Great Army of Heroes.
The feeling of joy remained until her next dream; in it the only thing that changed about her current situation was that Zuko’s evil was planted too deeply inside her to be removed. No matter how often she attempted to cleanse herself it grew. The happy blue eyed infant she suckled at her breast and loved with all of heart hoping it would balance the demon inside of him became Fire Lord. He ended the war by destroying the world. His father and grandfather were extremely proud of him, but would have been prouder if he bent fire.
Her Waterbending son used her elemental gift and the things she taught him to destroy her people, but because he was her son she still could not hate him.
She didn’t go back to sleep after that. All living things had natural healing instincts but at the North Pole she learned it was stronger among healers. They lived exceptionally long lives and recovered from most illnesses. There were cases of them rising from their sickbeds during epidemics fully healed and going on to care for others. She rarely got sick as a child. Her injuries had always healed faster than Sokka’s but it was attributed to his clumsiness and tendency to reinjure himself and forgotten.
What if they never escaped? What if she was forced to sacrifice herself to free Sokka, Aang and Appa and never got away after doing so? What if this dream was a warning prophecy from the spirits? What if she stood between saving the world from doom? It wasn’t the first time. She’d found Aang, brought back his conscious mind when he went into the uncontrolled Avatar State and saved his life in Ba Sing Se. What if the spirits were telling her the only way to save the world was to make sure Zuko didn’t spawn?
It wasn’t as if she wasn’t planning on killing him anyway; maybe she’d get extra karma points for ridding the world of Zuko before his little demon formed.
Katara rolled over to face him when Zuko murmured something intelligible in his sleep. He took the opportunity to pull her closer and shifted so his face was on her shoulder. As he drooled on her Katara pondered if the spirits would see it as murder or an act of duty during a time of war. She had said she would drag him to hell with her, but at the time she only saw him as an enemy and did not acknowledge him as a person. She gave herself to him in exchange for helping Aang and Sokka, she learned how he got his scar and healed the injuries she’d given him, before she protected him from who she now knew was Haru not Azula. She now recognized Zuko as a living human being and not just a Fire Nation monster.
If it was considered an act of duty during the time of war then there would be no repercussions. Acts of kindness and mercy far outweighed any dark deed committed in war time. That was her people’s way of ending tribal disputes and showing the other party was truly forgiven. She’d shown him kindness and mercy, neither of which she’d imagined she’d do when she bought the poison. If killing him was seen as murder she would spend the rest of eternity catering to his whims to make up for stealing his mortal life from him.
She wondered if it was simply a nightmare and her lack of sleep allowing her imagination to run away with things. She wondered if the dream stemmed from guilt. She’d often been told she was easy to handle as a child because she gave herself away whenever she did something wrong. She’d told Zuko she wouldn’t fight; they’d had sex twice and neither time she’d felt pain. The second time her body experienced the pleasures she’d been taught only came from lying with her husband. Even if it was to protect Sokka, she couldn’t shake her Gran-Gran’s words about girls who had sex outside of marriage.
Arraye: Thank you for your feedback. That was the first of many intense moments between Sokka and Katara. I have given Sokka a break; he’s now getting regular meals, clean clothes daily, and a bath every two days based on Katara’s agreement with Zuko. I can’t do more for him right now without ruining things that happen later in the story. This isn’t a fluffy light story. They are prisoners of war and people in that category generally don’t get treated well. I hope you stick around for things to get better. Don’t forget that Zuko is placing himself in danger by helping Katara. If he’s too nice, she’ll be taken from him and he’ll be punished. He was burned and banished for speaking out of turn; he knows what will happen if Ozai learns of his treason.
