Clyde sat in the recliner as he took notes a pad before looking at me. “So after hearing Lisa’s plan, what are your thoughts really Lincoln?” he asked scratching the bridge of his nose. Clyde was wearing a pair of sweats and a MSU t shirt as we sat in my Livingroom with me lying back on the couch. Clyde had reinforced that I should start thinking about more things as mine and not referring to them as my parents’. It was hard, but I think it’s getting easier. “I don’t know Clyde Lisa is a certified genius in almost every field of science, but she’s not the best at reading people, or emotional situations, so I’m hesitant to go along with her plan despite her intelligence.”
Clyde nodded tapping his pencil against his chin. “I see where you’re coming from Lincoln, but speaking as someone who’s spent four years making it my mission to understand people I have to agree that Lisa’s plan is plausible.” I sat up at Clyde’s words. “You think I should sleep with Lynn too?” Clyde’s eyes enlarged some. “Well I uh, that is prickly moral quandary indeed, one the one hand I should say ‘hell no don’t do that to your sister!’, but on the other hand I just don’t know Lincoln. It’s not like Lynn is say Lisa’s age, or Lily’s she’s legally old enough to say who she wants to have sex with, the incest thing is kind of null and void at this point wouldn’t you say?”
I sighed nodding my head at Clyde’s words, knowing he was right about this. Her age is not the problem, and the incest well that was too late to be a problem now. “Do you not find Lynn attractive?” Clyde asked the million dollar question, and I did have the answer. “I mean yeah she’s attractive, downright sexy really she’s taken really good care of her body of the years, and well her attitude is a little rough around the edges, but nothing I didn’t run up against when I was dating Ronnie Anne in fact Lynn’s a lot like she was just younger.” Clyde rubbed his chin again. “Maybe that’s it, as I recall you and Ronnie went well together until it just didn’t right you kind of just went out, are you afraid of that happening with you and Lynn, but worse considering your family?”
I’d never thought of it like that me and Ronnie went hot and heavy for a few months and then it kind of just fell apart like a stack of cards, and to this day I’m not exactly sure what went wrong, but if that did happen with Lynn it’d be so much worse. “Maybe that is it Clyde.” Clyde clicked his tongue his version of an ‘I told you so’. “Now that we have some food for thought, how are you going to deal with the whole Lola situation? I hear she’s been a real handful.” I ran my hand through my hair at the mention of Lola as I cast an eye to the clock. “Lisa said I should pick Lola up from school and spend some one on one time with her. I’m nervous as all heck man, Lola’s always been rather vicious, but now she’s like a feral animal ready to rip me to pieces. Is it wrong for a grown man like me to be terrified of an eleven year old?”
Clyde raised his notebook to hide his smile as he shook his head no. “Remember Lincoln one bite at a time.” He said patting my shoulder. “I’m gonna get out of here for now let me know how things go with Lola.” I waved him off as Clyde walked out the front door. I cast another like at the clock it read 1:50pm. “An hour left before I need to go pick up Lola, oh man what am I going to do?!” I shouted pacing the floor. “Oh I know I’ll uh work on my comic that’s right let that calm me down.” I went to my computer sitting in front of and started sketching out some things. Ever since I started sending in my artwork to certain comic companies I’ve been getting a little work from them mostly to test my skills but they did pay me for it, so this was the perfect chance to get ahead on some of that.
Lola cast a glance at the clock above her teacher’s head and yawned here she was in math having already finished the requisite ten problems on the board and was bored out of her mind. She cast her eyes around the class looking at the myriad of faces around the room displaying frustration, anxiety, and some with just a glazed face much like her own just counting the minutes until they could get out of this hellhole, but unlike these kids this was just her part time hell, she would leave here and return to her own personal torture pit being crammed in with her siblings in their grandfather’s home where there was no privacy, or respect for her things. She let her head fall to the desk as she bit her lip in anger. This is all Lincoln’s fault! He abandoned us to this while he’s probably over there laying around in his underwear with the whole house to himself. She gripped her pencil so hard she felt the word deform under her fingers until the bell rang.
Lola snatched up her bag and headed for the door shoving her way past anyone who was in her way. She could hear the whiny voices of those she’d moved, but didn’t stop until she’d reached the front doors her heels clicking against the pavement as her deep blue skirt fluttered around her thighs. She blew harshly from her nose like an angry bull incapable of goring someone as she threw her back pack over her shoulder adjusting her white shirt under it as she looked for Pop-Pop in the crowd of kids and parents. She scanned the area spotting white hair in the distance and headed in its direction, only to be surprised at the owner of the white hair. “L-Lincoln?!”
I stood up a little straighter as I noticed Lola heading towards me her eyes shadowed in anger, she reminded me of a killer Chihuahua as she hurriedly walked over to me only for her angry face to be replaced by one of shock. “L-Lincoln?” I held a hand up in a wave. “Hey Lola I’m here to pick you up from school.” I said nervously rubbing the back of my head, until Lola seemed to reboot. “No, I’d rather walk home then ride with you.” I’ll admit that one hurt, but I just grit my teeth and smiled. “come on Lola it’s cold out and I want to uhh spend some time with you I know I haven’t been the best brother, but I want to make up for it.” Lola turned to me looking over her shoulder up and down. “Prove it.” She said turning around and cocking her hip. “On your knees .” I arched a brow at Lola’s command. “You want me to kneel in the parking lot?” Lola arched a brow of her own. “Is that going to be a problem, because if it is I can just start walking.”
I sighed kneeling down only to yelp as Lola dug her heel into my thigh as she used me as a step stool into the car. If I wasn’t doing my best to make up for the past three years I would have stood up making her fall into the car.” I massaged my thigh before going around to the other side of the car and hopping in the driver seat. “So Lola wher-?” “You will address me as Ms. Loud, after all I haven’t seen you in three years we might as well be complete strangers to one another. Oh boy Lola was really doing a number on me at this rate my heart will be cold mush by the time we’re done. I swallowed before sighing. “As you wish Ms. Loud. Where are we headed?” Lola cupped her chin before nodding. “You’re going to take me to the mall and buy me whatever I want, and then maybe I will consider allowing you to call me Lola again.” I bit my lip as I started the car heading for the mall. This was going to be a long afternoon.
We stepped into the department store and for the first time since we met outside of school I saw some happiness in Lola’s face. She walked over to a jewelry case scouring them with the practiced eye of a jewelry aficionado. I stood to the side looking at some of the watches not that I was really going to buy one my phone was the only watch I needed. “Lincoln I’ll take this.” Lola said holding up a rather nice necklace with a crown pendant on it. It was a really nice piece and that meant expensive. I swallowed terrified of the price on it. It was enough to make my heart stop, but this was for Lola so I bought it for her. “Hmm good now let’s continue.” Lola said as she made her way deeper into the department store demanding this and that, until I just couldn’t take it anymore. Lola stood in front of a pair of designer shoes looking to me. “Lola no.” Her eyes scrunched up before she spoke. “I thought you were going to make up for the three years you messed up, if that was true buy those shoes.”
I shook my head. “I’m not doing that Lola I’ve spent more than enough on the things you want.” Lola stomped her foot. “I decide when you’ve made up for the mess you made, and you still haven’t.” she said staring up at me. I sighed. “Lola I was wrong for agreeing to this. I thought it’d be easier to buy you stuff, but I realized that the easy way isn’t always the right way, sometimes things need to be hard, and so that’s why I’m not going to buy you any of this stuff, but that necklace you picked out.” Lola’s face turned red as a tomato and I was prepared to have my eardrums busted by her shouting, instead she hugged me. “Oh good you realized your lesson Lincoln, good thing too because I wasn’t going to stop. I wanted to make you suffer for what you did to us, and when you said you’d do anything for it I took full advantage to teach you, that what you did was wrong and that you can’t fix it with gifts.”
I looked at her and sighed. “You little con artist!” Lola rolled her eyes. “I’m still mad at you, but now at least I know you’re serious about making up for these past few years, so I’ll give you a chance to do things right.” I reached down picking Lola up for a hug. “Thanks Lola I really appreciate you teaching me this lesson and I promise no more easy way out, I’m going to do this right even if it hurts!” I said setting her down as we headed for the register to buy Lola’s necklace and then to the food court for ice-cream. I spent the day just well riding with Lola talking about old times and well telling her how I was getting things ready for everyone to come back home. “Oh thank you so much Lincoln I’m so tired of living with Pop-Pop and Myrtle and sharing a bedroom with Lisa and her weird experiments.”
I chuckled as I stroked Lola’s hair. “I know Lola, but can you take it easier one everyone this hasn’t been easy for them either, so just remember that from now on.” I said pulling up in front of Pop-Pop’s house the sun had set some time ago, so I was expecting a lecture from Pop-Pop about punctuality. I stepped out of the car and went around the side to open Lola’s door. “Allow me Princess.” I said winking at her watching her blush. “You’re such a weirdo Lincoln, but I don’t dislike that about you.” She said heading up to the door seeing it open revealing Albert. “You were supposed to have my granddaughter back hours ago young man if this is how you’re going to treat my angels then you and I have a problem!” Albert said before he started laughing clapping me on the back.
“So how did it go?” I looked at Lola over Pop-Pop’s shoulder seeing her apologize to her sisters and nodded. “I think it went well Pop-Pop, I’m almost ready for them to come back just give me until the end of the week.” Albert waved his hand. “Lincoln it’s been three years a few more days won’t matter take your time.” I noticed Lynn staring at me from the far side of the room before walking away and sighed inwardly, every step I made towards getting things on track was another step closer to having to answer Lynn’s feelings. I nodded hugging Pop-Pop before heading back home. I walked into the door and noticed a light up the stairs. “Hello!?” I called out shutting the door as I headed up the stairs following the light to left end of the hall seeing a light on under Luna, and Luan’s door. “Luna, Luan that you?” I asked reaching for the bat Lynn left just inside her bedroom door as I walked to the door and throwing it open with the bat raised only to hear giggle from a naked Luna…
