There isn't a WHOLE lot I had to change about the Day of Black Sun. It pretty much went right along with my plans. It wasn't until re-watching this episode, however, that I realized I'd given Katara a far (like, really far) more intense healing power than she has in cannon. It takes time for her to heal her father and Toph's feet when they're burned at the Western Air Temple, however I've already had her knocking people out with suggestions to crack and heal bones so these are small injuries in comparison. It must be author's indulgence ;)
Thanks for the comments :)
Episode 10 & 11 - The Day of Black Sun
After a deep breath Katara stared out over the water to ground herself. The battle had not even begun and already the events of that morning were surreal. They had breached the Gates of Azulon by navigating sub-water vessels under them with the help of the swamp benders. They had come up for air and were minutes away from engaging the Fire Nation.
Until Katara had seen Toph standing among members of the earth army, waiting and willing to give up their lives for this cause, she had not realized how young she and her friends were, how wrong it seemed for children to be fighting in a real war, and how right it seemed at the same time.
Next to her kin Toph seemed so small and even though she was more than capable of taking care of herself Katara had to swallow the unbearable urge to protect her.
"Everything is going to be different after today, isn't it?" Aang said from behind her.
She turned to look at him and had to swallow her protective instincts again. He was the Avatar, a master air bender, a master water bender, and a master earth bender, but she still wanted to grab him and demand he go someplace safe and out of the way. But she didn't.
"What if I don't come back?"
"You will Aang. You've come so far. You're not the goofy kid we found a year ago," Katara said and hugged him tightly.
When she let him go he stood on his toes and kissed her. It was a hard kiss, she felt his desperation, and then he was gone. She watched him soar through the air, towards the Capital City, and her heart twisted for him.
"Come on, Katara. Everyone is ready to go," Sokka said from the hatch.
"Right," she answered and used the water to jump over to Appa. She formed an air bubble around them as Appa dove under the water and together they went into battle.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Come with me," Zuko pleaded. "You don't have to stay here."
"I want to," Mai said. "You're not making this easy."
"There isn't any information you can gain that will help us," he argued. He wanted to throw her over his shoulder and just make her do as he asked. He was anxious to leave, a great excitement that had more to do with the thrill of taking action than the fear of facing his father.
"If we already had a connection to them we could have warned them that Azula already knows their plan. We could have told them exactly what to expect."
"I already know what to expect. I was the one at the war meeting."
"You know the Avatar isn't going to win the war today. Azula has the whole thing too planned out. He might even be captured along with the rest of them. What are you going to do then?"
"Help them escape."
"Right, and after you talk to your father how do you suppose to do that all on your own without knowing where they are and with no one on your side?"
"You're determined to do this," Zuko said to himself in defeat.
"You're going to be a great teacher, and when Sozin's comet arrives you and the Avatar will be ready. Then you and Katara will come back for me."
She sounded so certain, so confident. Zuko drew her towards him, held her against him, and breathed in her scent to commit it to memory. He didn't want to leave behind anything that would make him want to come back, but her mind was made up.
He kissed her tenderly, then let her go and didn't look back as he headed to his father's underground bunker.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"The Capital City is abandoned. There's no one there," Aang said as he dropped to the ground on his glider. Katara helped her father, injured during the battle, come forward.
"They knew," Sokka narrowed his eyes. "He must be close. Some place where he's safe, but can still lead his armies."
Katara listened intently and wondered where Zuko was. Was he with his father? Would Aang have to fight him too? Her hand went to her necklace, but it wasn't Zuko's. Her mother's was in its rightful place, and she felt more comfortable in her traditional Southern clothes, but she missed the feel of the fire emblem under her thumb.
"If you need to find a secret underground bunker, I'm your girl!" Toph volunteered, raising her hand.
"Are you going?" Sokka asked Katara.
"No, you go. I'm going to stay here and heal dad."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Your marriage to Azula is abhorrent. She's your daughter! You are both insane."
Ozai remained silent, a smile on his face mocking his angry accusations. Zuko drew a deep breath to stay in control of himself.
"We were brought up believing that we were the greatest nation and that we were sharing our greatness with the world. What an amazing lie that was. The world doesn't see our greatness. They hate us, and we deserve it."
Zuko faced his father, his swords drawn. Ozai had threatened him, but sat back down when he armed himself and he knew now why Iroh had insisted he learn something other than fire bending.
Ozai laughed, "Your uncle has gotten to you, hasn't he?"
"Yes he has, and when I'm through here I'm going to rescue him. Then I'm going to join the Avatar, and I'm going to help him defeat you." Zuko put his swords away and headed for the door.
"Why not stay and do it now? Don't you want to know where your mother is?"
Zuko knew it was a ploy, but couldn't help turning around. His father's face was smug as he implied that Ursa had murdered Azulon to save Zuko's life, and was then banished for her treason.
"So she's still alive?"
"Perhaps." Ozai stood, suddenly confident. Electricity charged the room giving Zuko the second he needed to prepare himself before the lightning struck. He caught it and strained to hold it, feeling the tingle slide through his fingers into his arms. It pushed him backwards, towards the door, and when he reached it he let the current move through him, to his stomach, and passed it back to Ozai. He heard the explosion it made as he raced down the hall, his thoughts already on Iroh.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I wasted all of our time," Sokka moaned.
"It's not your fault. Azula knew we were coming and she had every step planned," Toph insisted. Azula had been waiting in the main bunker instead of Ozai. She cleverly mentioned Suki's imprisonment and if she hadn't been so obviously pregnant Sokka might have extracted the information from her by more savage means.
"Can you believe she's pregnant? Who would possibly be brave enough to get that close to her?"
"It's not too late. The eclipse is over, but I can still face the Fire Lord." Aang squared his shoulders.
"No, he's already prepared for us. We don't have the benefit of surprise. Right now the best plan is to go help our friends," Toph urged.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"What happened?" Zuko demanded. He found his uncle's cell ripped apart and empty. A guard was lying against the wall.
"I've never seen anything like it. He was a one-man army."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"We CAN'T leave you all to be imprisoned!" Katara wanted to wail it as loud as she could, but it came out as a desperate whisper. Their subs were demolished by the restored fire benders from war balloons. There was no way out, and it was no use to keep fighting.
"It's for the best. We tasted some victory today, and that's what counts." Her father hugged her. Children were already being loaded into Appa's saddle. Teo and the Mechanist were saying their goodbyes. Pipsqueak lifted the Duke up onto Appa's head. Haru gave her a look that said this was her fault before he climbed up into Appa's saddle with Sokka and Toph.
"This is so wrong," Aang agreed with Katara.
"We'll have a greater chance in the long run if the Avatar is free and it will give us hope while we wait." Hakoda had a way with words, Katara mused. He always knew what to say. The entire invasion had been completely useless, it changed nothing, but he was still looking on the bright side. She hugged Aang and they both shed some private tears before mounting Appa.
"Where will we go?" asked On ji.
Aang glanced back at the gang and made a decision. "To the Western Air Temple."
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
He had hoped his uncle would be accompanying him, but Zuko steered his balloon in the direction he saw Appa going. He wished he had Iroh's advice on how to approach them, and he hoped where ever Iroh was he would be okay.

Episode 12 - The Western Air Temple
"He's the only fire bender in the world who has offered to teach Aang, and you guys won't even think about it?" Toph asked.
Katara thought about it. Zuko had followed them to the Temple and pleaded...PLEADED to join them with this stumbling speech about how he was good now. He looked so vulnerable and she had been dying to just catch a glimpse of him for what seemed like forever.
Everything in her had gone soft at the sight of him, but hadn't she spent every day convincing herself that he couldn't turn against his family? She clenched her fists and dug her nails into her palms to remind herself that if it looked too good to be true it probably was. They couldn't possibly trust him.
"You weren't there when he burned down Kioshi Island," Sokka exclaimed.
"Or when he stole my mother's necklace and used it to hunt us down with a bounty hunter," Katara added.
"Or when he risked his life to save me from Zhao," Aang admitted.
They were shocked for a moment, but Katara saw clear. "He probably only did it so he could capture you himself."
"I'm starting to wonder who the blind one really is around here." Toph walked towards the ledge.
"What was with all the bowing stuff?" Sokka asked, turning to On ji.
"He is my prince," she said a second before turning defensive. "You don't spend fourteen years training to fall flat on your face when royalty enters and then just turn it off. I did it without thinking."
"Well, try to control yourself. It doesn't look good to have our members bowing to the enemy," Sokka said.
Katara said nothing, but she understood. Her first instinct was to run to him...and put her arms around him. What would Sokka have said about that?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sitting on the ledge of her room, Katara studied the upside down pagodas that made up the Western Air Temple. She had only come to get a water pouch, but sat to take a few moments to herself.
"We need to talk."
Katara jumped at the sound of Haru's voice. "About what?"
"About your boyfriend. I thought he was your rescuer. I hauled water for HOURS because of him. Sokka says he's close and wants to join the gang. You didn't tell Sokka about it, did you?"
"You hauled water for hours because you forgot the difference between fighting for freedom and fighting for revenge. Obviously the lesson was lost on you. And I told Sokka about the fountain." Sort of. Katara crossed her arms and kept her eyes on the view outside her window.
"Did you tell him you were lovers?"
Katara said nothing, too shocked to react.
"You thought I wouldn't figure it out?"
"I don't have to explain myself to you, Haru."
"Katara! Come quick! Toph is hurt!"
Katara ran past Haru, shooting him a warning look. Toph was on her stomach, her feet in the air, the bottoms scorched. Immediately Katara pulled water from the pagoda fountain and covered her blistered feet.
Toph sighed and relaxed.
"What happened?"
"I snuck up on Zuko while he was sleeping last night."
"Did he attack you?" Aang demanded.
"Yes, and no. It was kind of an accident."
"Watch out!" the Duke screamed before a blast shook the pagoda. Sokka and Aang grabbed Toph and everyone took cover.
"It's Combustion Man!"
Katara looked over Sokka's shoulder around the corner. Combustion Man was standing in another pagoda, too far away for Katara to bend water from him. Zuko was in front of him, obviously trying to stop him, but he shot another ray of fire.
"He's going to blow this place right off the cliff," Toph said covering her ears.
Again Katara looked around the corner. Combustion Man turned on Zuko, a ray shot from his forehead, and Zuko was gone.
"No!" Katara shrieked and launched herself forward. All the water in the fountain followed, shattering into ice picks, and pummeling the metal monster. He was nicked in several places, but he was too far away, and none of them stopped him. Another blast shook the cliff side.
Sokka kissed his boomerang and sent it flying. It sped in a curve and struck Combustion Man's forehead. He fell and Sokka cheered, but moments later he got back up. They ran for cover again. Another explosion shook the Temple, but it was Combustion Man's pagoda that crumbled and fell into the depths below.
Then they saw Zuko, struggling to get up over the side of the ledge. Katara sat down, willing her heart to function normally, and completely grateful that he was still alive.
Once again he approached the group. "Toph," he said, still out of breath from his fall. "I'm so sorry. As a fire bender I know I need to learn to control my instincts so that I don't unintentionally hurt anyone."
Aang cast him a look. "When I first tried to fire bend, I hurt Katara, and swore I would never fire bend again." He looked around at his friends and then back to Zuko. "Zuko, I think you're supposed to be my teacher. In fact, after everything we've been through, it makes perfect sense."
Zuko smiled, but Aang held up a hand. "Everyone else has to agree as well. Toph? You're the one who got burned."
"Oh, yeah. I look forward to payback," she said with a fist to her hand.
"Sokka?"
Sokka's face scrunched, but he nodded. "If it's the only way to defeat the Fire Lord, I'm in."
"Katara?"
Katara looked away for a long moment, but finally nodded.
"Do we get a say?" Haru asked.
"No," Katara said firmly, and no one questioned it.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"So, like, welcome to your room. Lunch soon. And stuff," Sokka led Zuko into one of the empty rooms and his sentences were as awkward as the situation. Zuko smiled and nodded as Sokka left.
He put his bag down and took a moment to be grateful that he had accomplished the first part of his goal, even if it wasn't done gracefully. He took out a picture of his uncle and remembered what he had tried to tell him years ago, that someday he would find his own destiny.
He put the picture down as he sensed someone watching him. Katara was leaning against the doorway, her arms crossed, her head down. She was obviously angry and had been since the moment he appeared. So angry he knew it had been difficult for her to accept Aang's decision to take him on as his teacher.
"I know you think you have everyone fooled with that cheesy bad-guy-gone-good routine," she said to the ground.
"I missed you." Zuko took a few steps back, placed his hands behind him on the window ledge, and leaned against them to demonstrate his passivity.
"I've fallen for your tricks before. In the crystal caverns. At Ba Sing Se. After your so called rescue in Ba-hai. This isn't the first time you've struggled with doing the right thing." She came closer with every accusation. Her expression was hard, her anger tangible, but her blue eyes were glittering.
"Mai misses you too."
"I'll bet she does," Katara spat and threw a scroll at him. He caught it. "If this is some trick to use me against Aang I won't let it happen."
"You've changed your hair. I like it." He did like it. She was so close he could lean down and kiss her if he dared. She was beautiful in her anger, almost glorious, even while proclaiming her loyalty to someone else.
"Listen to me," she demanded in a cold controlled tone. "If you take one step backward, give me one reason to think you might hurt Aang, you won't have to worry about your destiny anymore because I will end it. Right there. Permanently."
He knew she meant it. She spun around and left. Zuko unrolled the scroll she had thrown at him.
It was an announcement of his marriage to Mai. He sat on the cot and again wished his uncle was available for consultation. Now all he had to do was teach Aang to fire bend, convince everyone he was on their side, and win over Katara who thought he was using her and wasn't happy that he had married someone else.
He knew he would be able to do the first two. What bothered him most was wondering if Katara was in love with Aang.
