“An’ you’re sure about that?” Corscan’s voice coming from the phone broke Kim’s little reverie.
Kim hesitated again. The answer wasn’t the right one and it wasn’t the one she wanted, but… it was the one she needed. “Yes. I’ll do it.” Kim repeated, a little more firmly this time.
“Well then, as much as I’d like us to meet tomorrow, I suppose I really should concede to the possibility of reality takin’ exception to that assumption.” Corscan said with amusement.
“Hunh?” Kim grunted, confused.
“Well, you do have commitments, now don’t you Kim? Do you have cheerleadin’ practice tomorrow? An’ if we do meet tomorrow, you’ll be away all Friday night an’ most of Saturday, so are you free for that or do you have plans with your family or any games you need to be at? Can you even get away at all?”
“Oh. Yeah. Hadn’t thought about that. Well, there’s no practice tomorrow, and no games this weekend, but… hang on a second…” Kim answered, waiting for Corscan’s affirmation before putting the phone on hold and setting it on her desk.
Going downstairs, Kim went into the kitchen to find her mother.
“Hey mom, do you and dad have any plans for this weekend?” Kim asked.
“Hmmm… I seem to recall your father saying something about wanting to take the boys to the new science exhibit at the Middleton museum and then having dinner at JP Bearymores,” Ann gave a little shudder at that thought, “but that was before they got into trouble at school… then again he is taking them to that robot movie tonight.” Ann smiled. “Honestly that man just cannot stay angry at those boys for more than a day or so.”
“But you and dad weren’t planning on going out Friday night or doing anything Saturday?”
“Not that I know of Kimmie. In fact, I’m fairly certain your father will be working late Friday on end of the month reviews for his latest project. Why do you ask honey?”
“Well, I needed to know if you wanted me to keep the tweebs for you or if we had any family plans for Friday and Saturday. If we don’t then I’ve got some world-saving things I need to take care of.” Which is technically true, since I fought Corscan for that, so my ‘obligation’ to her is part of it, Kim thought to herself as she finished.
“Well, unless your father has some surprise planned that he didn’t tell me about, you should be all right Kimmie.” Ann said.
“Ok, thanks mom.”
Heading back upstairs, Kim went to her room and dug out her Kimmunicator, connecting to Wade after waiting a half-minute or so.
“Hey Kim, what’s up?” Wade asked once he appeared on screen.
“Hey Wade, can you tell me if anything’s come in on the site that would need me for tomorrow or Saturday?” Kim asked.
“Sure Kim, just a second…” Wade answered before turning to his computer and typing on the keyboard at his usual breakneck pace. After a couple of minutes Wade looked back and said; “There’s nothing major here Kim, but if you’re looking for something to do I suppose I could schedule you to deal with a handful of bottom-of-the-barrel requests we usually ignore nowadays.”
“Like what?” Kim asked, curious.
“Hmmm… lost puppy, some rich guy wants you to housesit for him, promotional appearance at a strip-mall opening… oh, and Ms. Guiltmoore is trying to get you to feed her cats again.”
“Ugh!” Kim shuddered. “No, that’s ok Wade, I’m not looking to do anything, just making sure my schedule is clear. Thanks for the info.”
“No problem Kim. Bye!” Wade said before he ended the connection.
Well, no convenient delays to keep me from my fate. Kim sighed, uncertain whether she wanted to laugh or cry. Picking up her phone again, Kim hit the hold button and asked; “Corscan? Are you still there?”
“Of course.” Corscan answered.
“Unless something comes up between now and then, I should be free Friday and Saturday.”
“All right then. I believe you’d get out of school around three thirty if you don’t have a practice afterwards, right?” Corscan asked.
“Yeah, the final bell rings at three thirty, why?”
“I’ve just been thinkin’ about travel times is all. I think I’ll send a helicopter to collect you instead of a car this time round.”
“Ummm, ok. Where exactly are we going anyway? I remember you mentioning it would be somewhere other than Georgia…” Kim asked.
“Now now, that would spoil the surprise, now wouldn’t it?” Corscan purred. “But I think you’ll enjoy it if you let yourself. I’m sure you’ll be bringin’ your mission gear in case you get a call, right? You should pack some summer clothes too; somethin’ you’d wear for an active day, an’ a nice outfit for dinner.”
“What are we going on a date or something?” Kim asked sarcastically.
“Did you think we were just gonna fuck for twenty-four hours straight? I mean, I can accommodate you if that’s what you want, but I thought you were a little… unsettled, by the idea of being with me. Change your mind that much in the last few days did we?”
Kim could see Corscan’s broad smile and sparkling gold-flecked hazel eyes in the rich, amused tone of her voice, and she blushed furiously over the boldly challenging statement even as her frustration with the woman’s infuriating attitude spiked again.
“No! I just… I mean, I thought… oh I don’t know what I was thinking!” Kim sputtered.
“That’s ok, I understand.” Corscan said sympathetically. “Believe me Kim, I intend to make this as painless as possible for you.”
“If you wanted to be as painless as possible you wouldn’t be making me do this at all!” Kim all but shouted.
“We’ve discussed this before Kim; I’m just asking for what I’m owed, I’m not making you do anything, you are. If you really didn’t want to do this then you wouldn’t be…”
Kim sighed. “Whatever. I don’t want to get into this with you again Corscan. I said I’d do it, so can we just leave it alone please?”
“Of course. See you soon Kim.” Corscan said before hanging up.
Kim just shook her head, hit disconnect, and put the phone back in its cradle. Then she lifted up her Kimmunicator again and cycled the frequency to Ron’s unit before pressing connect. After a few minutes Ron finally answered.
“Sorry Kim,” Ron said as he came on screen. “Mom cleaned my room today and I have absolutely no idea where anything is now! What’s up?”
“Hey Ron, no problem,” Kim answered. “I was wondering if you wanted to come over tonight. Mom made casseroles and dad’s taking the tweebs to some movie.”
“Heck yeah! I’ve been going stir-crazy thinking I was going to have to spend another night at home this week. You want me to hit the video store on my way over, maybe pick up some new releases?”
“Sure Ron, that’d be great. Oh, and Ron, I know we didn’t make any specific plans for tomorrow, but I just wanted to let you know that I’m not going to be around from right after school ‘til sometime near suppertime Saturday I expect.”
“Hunh? What’s up KP, you doing something with the family?” Ron asked.
“Not exactly Ron. You remember when I told you I couldn’t do what Corscan wanted me to do for her?” Kim answered.
“Yeeaaaahh…” Ron responded cautiously, hesitant after spending nearly four days avoiding that subject to the point where he’d almost forgotten about it.
“Well, after thinking about it for a while it turns out that I think I can do what she wants me to after all, so I’m going to pay my debt to her.” Kim told Ron while focusing her concentration on not looking embarrassed or blushing over the thought of what she was going to be doing.
“Oh, I see. Well, what is it you’re doing anyway? You gonna need me and Rufus for this mission?”
Oh, I’m just doing her Ron, just her… Kim thought sarcastically before she said; “No, that’s ok Ron, I kinda have to handle this one on my own. It’s… confidential.” Which was true. Kim didn’t want anybody finding out what she was going to do with Corscan, ever. “But thanks for the offer, I know I can always count on you.”
“You know it Kimbo, you know it. Well, if you can’t talk about it can you at least let me know if it’s going to be dangerous or not? Should we be ready to go just in case you get in trouble?”
“Ahhhh, no, I can pretty much guarantee that it’s not going to be that kind of mission Ron.” Unless Corscan has some really radical tastes in bondage anyway, the random notion bounced into Kim’s mind from out of nowhere and she had to work twice as hard to keep from blushing after she thought of it. “It’s more… complicated than anything else, but it won’t be dangerous.”
“Ok, if you say so Kim. Anyway, I’ll be over in about a half-hour, maybe a little longer if there’s a crowd at Videorama.”
“Great, we should just be taking up supper by then. See you soon Ron.”
“See ya’ soon Kim.” Ron said before he disconnected.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kim looked out the window of the small helicopter that had picked her up in the school parking lot just a few minutes ago, watching the terrain rush past her far below as the high speed aircraft carried her ever closer to the Middleton airport and her coming meeting with Corscan.
As Kim’s thoughts wandered she reflected on how calm she seemed to be. She’d expected to be a nervous wreck by now, but surprisingly, she wasn’t. Last night she’d been able to totally forget about today for the six hours she and Ron spent together watching movies and talking, and after he left she’d had no real problem doing her homework or digging through her summer clothes to pick out some appropriate outfits for the day either. Getting to sleep had been a little more difficult than usual, but she slept fairly well once she dropped off, and woke feeling more or less refreshed and ready to go. The day at school had been unexpectedly easy too. There were a few times when her thoughts wandered, and her anxiety had increased somewhat as the time for her to leave had gotten closer, but all in all it was nowhere near as bad as she expected it to be.
Which was not to say that she wasn’t nervous at all, because she definitely was, just that it wasn’t nearly as bad as she’d thought it would be. Honestly Kim didn’t think she was that much more nervous than some of the times she had tried asking Josh out.
With an almost startling suddenness, the mottled white and brown ground below gave way to the white and grey and black of the airport’s runways, staging areas, and outbuildings, and Kim’s stomach gave a little lurch as she felt the helicopter slow down considerably. As the dart-like aircraft slowed, the pilot circled the landing area once, and Kim raised an eyebrow over the plane she saw waiting below.
It was matte black with some dull grey trim and highlights here and there, and at first it looked like a “flying wing” design, but as the helicopter descended, the details became clearer and it turned out be a blended body type instead. The central body was a flat, broad, hundred-foot long oval that ran the entire length of the plane, with a smaller quarter-sized oval “pod” to either side of the rear of it. Each section was composed of smoothly streamlined curves that flowed into one another and then out into the long, broad wings. The wings themselves had a shallow angle for the first half of their length, and then swept back at a much sharper angle for the rest of their length, while the “pods” contained a cluster of three big jet engines each, placed in a loose staggered pattern with two on top and one on the bottom.
Once the helicopter set down by the rear of the plane, Kim got out and duck-walked out of range of the rotors, keeping a tight hold on the overnight bag she was carrying. After she was clear, the chopper rapidly climbed back into the sky and quickly vanished, heading back in the direction of Middleton. Looking around, Kim saw a couple of ground crew checking the plane’s wheels, as well as a boarding ramp that was lowered from between the two “pods” at the back of the plane. Seeing no one else in the area, and with the ground crew seemingly ignoring her, Kim walked over to the ramp and ascended it.
At the top of the ramp was a short landing ending in a heavy looking door with a single porthole style window in it. Looking through the window, Kim saw that beyond the door was a fifteen-foot long corridor that ended in another door. With no other apparent option, Kim tried the door, and when it opened she entered the corridor, shut the door behind her, and headed to the next one. This door was much lighter looking, and Kim thought she could hear music playing on the other side of it. Hesitating for a moment, Kim decided to knock before entering. It was only a few seconds afterwards that the music stopped and Kim heard a muffled “Come in.”
A wave of warmth rolled over Kim as she opened the door, and once she stepped into the surprisingly big room beyond she almost immediately began to sweat in her heavy winter clothes. Looking around, Kim saw that the main cabin was one big room over twenty feet wide and at least thirty-five feet long, divided into three sections.
The section Kim was in now was about twelve feet long and contained three rows of oversized, first-class style seats, three seats to either side for a total of eighteen in all. The section beyond that was laid out almost like a living room or a lounge, with two smaller areas formed by a ten-foot long couch facing the left wall, which had a pair of widescreen plasma TV entertainment centers mounted on it. The right-hand area sported a broad, seven-foot long table projecting from the wall, with five chairs placed around it. The final section was a short six-foot long area with a full desk and chair built into each wall, both of which had an integrated computer terminal, communications center with phone and fax machine, and mini-photocopier and printer built into them. In the center of the far wall was an open corridor, with a door directly to either side of it, and just like all the other interior designs Kim had seen connected to Corscan, this one consisted of a large amount of natural wood paneling and earth tones as well.
It was from the last section that Corscan was looking at her, seated at the left-hand desk with a warm smile on her striking features.
“Hello Kim, glad you decided to show. We’ll be taking off in just a few minutes now that you’re here. I have a few things I need to take care of before that, but I’ll be with you as soon as I can. In the meantime the bathroom’s on the right,” Corscan pointed to the door farthest from her. “You can get changed in there.”
Kim moved closer before responding, not wanting to shout across the cabin at Corscan. As she approached, Kim saw that the big woman was wearing a loose, short sleeved Hawaiian shirt that was an almost steel grey off-white, with orchid and leaf patterns on it done in soft shades of blue, unbuttoned with a snug midriff-bearing white boi-beater t-shirt underneath it. A few steps more and Kim could see the baggy mid-thigh khaki cargo shorts Corscan had on, supported by a heavy brown leather belt, and the durable leather hiking boots and knee socks she wore. Completing the ensemble was a chronograph on a heavy leather band strapped to her left wrist, and a silver necklace composed of a smooth rounded bar bent into the shape of a stylized heart and supported by a mass of fine silver chains that were looped around either side of it.
“Hello Corscan,” Kim said as she reached a comfortable talking distance. Now that she was close to her Kim noticed that Corscan smelled good too—not perfume but rather a faint herbal scent along with a subtle but heady musk. “You look nice today.”
Kim struggled not to wince or blush at the lame comment; it was true, but she really didn’t know why she’d made it. Her emotions were all twisting around in her gut like milk in a butter churn. She thought she might have felt a little shiver of excitement when she’d heard Corscan’s sultry tones again, and she thought she was enjoying the view as Corscan lounged on the chair in front of the desk while she worked, but she knew that she was nervous and worried about what was going to happen tonight (she assumed), and she knew that the instant she had seen Corscan again some of her annoyance towards the woman had ignited once more.
Looking over her shoulder at Kim, Corscan smiled her lopsided smile and said; “Thanks darlin’. I’d like to say the same, but that puffy down jacket really doesn’t do a thing for you. I like the tight jeans though…” Corscan finished with a wink.
This time Kim did blush a little, and she quickly said; “I’ll go get changed now…” and headed towards the door that Corscan had indicated earlier.
“If you’re sure that’s what you want to do darlin’.” Corscan said, and Kim paused and looked back at her, confused.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, if you’re havin’ second thoughts, it’d be better for you to back out now than later, when you’re thousands of miles from home…”
Kim sighed deeply. It was true that a part of her did want to leave, but she was fairly certain that was just her nerves talking. Ever since she’d talked to Corscan yesterday and unexpectedly agreed to this, her sense that it was something she might not want to do but was something she needed to do had only grown stronger.
“No Corscan, you were right; if I really didn’t want to be here I wouldn’t be.” Kim raised an eyebrow and continued acerbically; “Not that I’m letting you off the hook for being such a— I mean, for doing this to me in the first place.”
“I believe the word you were lookin’ for there starts with a ‘B’…” Corscan joked, grinning, and Kim just looked away and snorted, giving a little bemused smile of her own and shaking her head in disbelief over how the woman could dismiss the situation so easily.
“You’d better go get changed then. I wish I could tell you to take your time, but unfortunately I can’t; we’re on a tight schedule.” Corscan said as she turned back to her computer screen. “So try an’ be quick, ok Kim?”
“Ok Corscan.” Kim said as she opened the bathroom door and stepped into the room beyond. Turning on the light, Kim closed the door behind her and looked around, seeing that the bathroom, while only five feet long and ten feet wide, was absolutely enormous for one on a plane; it even had a shower on the far right side of it.
Kim quickly set her overnight bag on the counter, pulled out the first outfit she had put together last night, and changed into it. Corscan had said to wear something for an active day, and Kim had chosen her long purple shorts and her lavender grey t-shirt with the periwinkle trim, along with a good pair of high top sneakers and some heavy cotton socks. A pair of fuzzy wristbands completed the outfit, along with putting her hair up in a ponytail using her blue scrunchie. After changing, Kim carefully packed away her school clothes, but was at a loss for what to do with her coat, since it was much too big to stuff into her overnight bag. In the end Kim had no choice but to carry it out with her.
Kim came out of the bathroom just in time to see Corscan shut down the computer she was working at and stretch mightily, lacing her fingers together and reaching toward the ceiling while slowly twisting back and forth in her chair. Kim watched the display with interest, the play of muscle beneath Corscan’s tan skin catching her eye and causing her to note that Corscan’s stripe pattern extended all the way down to her wrists. Purring contentedly, Corscan swiveled her chair around and then paused, seeing Kim standing there watching her.
“Mmmm, now that’s a much nicer look for you.” Corscan said as she uncoiled from her chair and stood to her full six-foot two-inch height.
“Thanks,” Kim replied. “Ahhhh, where can I put all this stuff anyway?” Kim asked, holding up her coat, backpack, and overnight bag.
“There’s some compartments in back. C’mon; I’ll show you.” Corscan said before turning and heading to the rear of the plane, a slight liquid sway in her hips from her lazy, gliding stride.
Kim followed her all the way to the back wall, where Corscan opened a big hidden compartment that seemed to swallow Kim’s meager baggage once she put it inside. After Kim stowed her gear, Corscan closed the compartment and led Kim to the front row of seats.
“C’mon, let’s get settled; Frost has already fired up the engines so he’ll be wantin’ to head out as soon as he can.”
“Really?” Kim asked, not really having noticed any change since she’d boarded the aircraft.
“Yeah. For a guy who’s supposed to be workin’ for me, sometimes he can be really impatient.” Corscan said with a smile.
“Ahhh, no, I meant the engines; I didn’t notice anything different.” Kim said as she sat down in the chair next to Corscan, slightly embarrassed over the confusion.
“Oh, well, yeah, the Blackwing design’s engine pods are pretty well insulated from the main cabin. It takes a bit of familiarity to know when they’re in use. It’s just a faint vibration in the floor; if you look for it I’m sure you can feel it.”
Kim closed her eyes and concentrated, and after a moment she opened them again and nodded. “Yeah, I can feel it now; you’re right, it is pretty faint, but if you know what to look for…”
Corscan nodded back and finished strapping herself into her seat, and Kim quickly followed suit, wondering why such luxurious seats had four-point restraints instead of normal seatbelts.
While Kim was figuring out the buckles and length adjustments to her restraints, Corscan flipped open a locking clasp on the armrest of her seat and slid a long rectangle out from inside it. Then she turned it over and set it on her lap, revealing it to be a computer keyboard. At the same time there was a gentle hum from overhead, as a plasma screen monitor on a slender remote arm deployed from a hidden ceiling compartment and came to a stop in front of her seat.
“The one pain in the ass about a Blackwing is that this is the only way to let the pilot know the passengers are ready to go, if there’s no one to go up front an’ let ‘em know directly.” Corscan complained with a smile while typing, the screen display showing what looked like a text-message window.
“I see,” Kim commented, watching as Corscan put the keyboard away and noticing her own seat had what looked to be the same setup built into it. As Kim felt the plane begin to move, she asked; “So, Mr. Frost is our pilot then?”
“Him an’ Hui, yes. I usually don’t go very far without one or the other of them around somewhere.” Corscan smiled as she looked over at Kim.
“So, can you tell me where we’re going now?” Kim asked.
“Nope, sorry,” Corscan said while shaking her head gently. “You’ll just have to hold your horses a little longer. It’ll take us less than two hours to get there, so it won’t be that long now, just be patient Kim.”
“Ok,” Kim said, noticing that the vibration from the engines was just a touch more noticeable, the plane was shaking slightly, and that there was a real sense of movement now.
“Now normally this is the part where I’d offer to hold your hand, but unlike most folks, I’m thinkin’ that this won’t be nearly as impressive to you, given how many weird things I’m sure you’ve ridden in the past.” Corscan said with a broad grin.
“Hunh? What do you mean?” Kim asked, but as she did she felt the sensation of movement increase steadily and drastically, pushing her back in her seat ever more firmly. A few moments later Kim’s stomach dipped as the plane shot into the sky at a sharp angle, and the g-force continued to increase to almost uncomfortable levels. About a half minute later the plane gave a gentle but noticeable shudder, then it leveled out a few seconds later, gave a second shudder a few seconds after that, and finally gave a last shudder nearly a minute after the initial takeoff. After the third shudder, the g-force quickly dissipated and Kim felt normal once more.
“Was that… what I think it was?” Kim asked, not entirely sure if her suspicions were right given that all she really had to work with was the g-force she’d felt. The shudders had been far too gentle for her to be sure if they were what she thought they were or not.
“Us hitting Mach three?” Corscan asked. At Kim’s nod she grinned and answered; “Yep.”
“So you have a personal jet that goes at least Mach three?” Kim asked with just a little disbelief.
“No, I have access to dozens of jets that go at least Mach three.” Corscan answered with an even bigger grin while she released the straps holding her in her seat.
Kim just shook her head with an amused smile and undid her own restraints, following Corscan as she stood and moved out into the open lounge area.
“Hang on a sec’…” Corscan said, and Kim half sat on the back of the couch with one leg up while she waited, watching as Corscan went over to the desk she had been working at earlier and retrieved a slim folder from one of its drawers. Returning to Kim, Corscan offered the folder to her.
“What’s this?” Kim asked curiously.
“My test results. I told you I got myself checked out…”
Kim’s face twisted up and she looked away. “Oh god, I don’t want to see those.” I don’t even want to think about stuff like that thank you very much…
Corscan rested her hand on Kim’s shoulder and said; “Kim… Kim, listen to me.” Corscan paused until Kim looked at her again. “You might not want to see them, but you should. Things like this are important if you’re gonna be sleepin’ with someone, an’ you have no reason to just take me at my word that I’m clean, so I want to make sure you’ve got no reason to be worried about that.”
“I…” Kim hesitated, and then continued after a few moments, smiling with an oddly perplexed expression on her features as she spoke. “That’s ok Corscan, really. You’re… I think you’re pretty screwed up; you have to know that, right? But… I think I do trust you in an equally screwed up way too, if you understand that.” Kim snorted softly and shook her head at the end of the statement.
“Yeah, I have that kind of effect on people,” Corscan smiled back at Kim. “But you really should look at this Kim. You shouldn’t trust people at face value when it comes to this kind of thing unless you’re sure you can. Believe me, there are a lot of people out there who are a whole lot more ‘screwed up’ than I seem to you, who wouldn’t think twice about lyin’ to someone about this kind of thing.”
Kim raised an eyebrow and smiled as she said; “Doesn’t the fact that you’re practically trying to shove the thing down my throat pretty much prove you’re telling the truth?”
Corscan raised an eyebrow in return and answered; “Maybe. Then again, for all you know this folder is empty an’ I’m just really good at playin’ people. Which I am by the way…”
“Oh for the love a… Ok, I give up; gimmi the damn thing,” Kim said, almost laughing now. After Corscan handed her the folder Kim opened it and quickly scanned the contents. Then she looked up and said; “How do I even know these are real test results?”
“Now you’re gettin’ into the spirit of things!” Corscan grinned. “Reports have doctor’s names an’ phone numbers on them Kim; they can be verified if you make the effort.”
“In an airplane at twenty thousand feet?” Kim said dryly.
“Well, ok, you got me there… but on this plane? Yeah, absolutely; phones are right over there.” Corscan gestured at the two desks behind her.
Kim smiled and shook her head dismissively, handing the folder back to Corscan while she said; “Yeah, ok, we’re done with this; it’s starting to get crazy now.”
Corscan smiled and answered; “Hey, I’m a crazy kinda girl…” before returning the folder to the drawer it came from. After that she looked back to Kim and asked; “So, you hungry by any chance?”
“Yes, I am actually.”
“Good, because we won’t be eatin’ again for…” Corscan trailed off, checking her watch before continuing, “Well over five hours from now. Hope you like pizza.”
“Yes, I do, thank you.” Kim said as Corscan disappeared through the door on the left side of the cabin. A few minutes later she came back out with a pair of party pizza boxes on top of which were four bottles of water and a stack of napkins. Heading over to the table, Corscan set the load down and laid everything out, then she looked up at Kim with a peculiar expression on her face.
“Ahhh, how exactly are you when it comes to table manners anyway?”
“Hunh?” Kim grunted, confused.
“Well ahhh, while I’m certainly capable of having a seven-course dinner with the Queen of England an’ bein’ perfectly prim an’ proper from start to finish, my more usual eatin’ habits tend to be best described as… those of a starving wolf? Now I could assume that with you bein’ best friends with a teenage boy who has a naked mole rat for a pet, you’re… acquainted, with that kind ‘a thing, but, assumptions usually get people in trouble more often than not, so I figured it was best to ask.”
Kim snorted into a chuckle and said; “Yeah, I am, but thanks for asking. Actually, sometimes when it’s just me and Ron or when I’m alone you could say I eat that way too. Not all the time… but, sometimes.”
“Well all right then; let’s take down our prey…” Corscan’s lopsided grin deepened as she flipped open the first pizza box and sat down. Kim quickly joined her, sitting across the table from her and smiling over the open box as the two of them set about making the heavily loaded super-works pizza quickly disappear into their stomachs.
While they ate, Corscan began talking with Kim. About little things first, like how the food was and what she liked to eat, but she used that as segue into talking about school, the squad, and what Kim liked to do after school. Once they finished eating, Kim helped Corscan clean up, and as they did the conversation expanded outwards, becoming even deeper. Soon Kim found herself talking about her life in general, her friendship with Ron and Monique, her relationship with her family, and even her world-saving adventures.
As they talked, Kim opened up to Corscan more and more, and as she did so, her anxiety slowly but surely melted away. She didn’t know why, but talking with Corscan was just so… easy. Corscan’s enthralling presence and relaxed manner put her at ease, drew her out, and made her feel comfortable despite the whole situation she was in. So much so that she would forget why she was there—or even that she was still annoyed with Corscan—for longer and longer periods of time as the conversation went on. Twice Kim was even shocked out of the almost surreal situation not by remembering those things, but rather from noticing that she had responded to one of Corscan’s many innuendo-laden statements with a flirty little comment of her own in return.
Sooner than Kim expected, Corscan was standing up and telling her it was getting close to landing time, and Kim couldn’t believe how fast the time had seemed to fly by—no pun intended. She excused herself to use the bathroom, and after she was done, she stood in front of the sink, staring at herself in the mirror.
“Ok, that was weird.” Kim told herself. “But I guess it’s better than spending the entire trip chewing on my fingernails or wishing I could slap the hell out of her for this…”
Do you even want to do that anymore? Kim’s inner voice asked.
Hell yes! Well… maybe. I don’t know… why does she have to be so damn likeable? This would be so much easier if I couldn’t stand her! Kim answered.
Would it?
Kim gave a strangled sound of frustration and ran the water, splashing it up into her face several times before toweling off. Then she shook her head one last time and left the bathroom, unwilling to keep thinking about how in the hell she could be even more confused now than she had been earlier in the week. This whole trip was turning out to be nothing like what she expected—though honestly, given its nature she hadn’t really had much in the way of an idea of what it would be like either, but it certainly wasn’t this she was sure.
Heading to the seats in back, Kim strapped herself in next to Corscan and waited quietly while the plane began its descent. The landing was much more gentle than takeoff, though the steady decrease in speed had a much more prolonged lurching effect on Kim’s tummy as they decelerated to subsonic velocity. Soon Kim felt the plane bounce once, lightly, before they set down smoothly and, after another couple of minutes or so, finally came to a full stop. There was a familiar soft ding a few moments later and a small, concealed light came on over the archway of the front corridor, announcing that it was safe to move about the plane once more.
“Well, we’re finally here. That wasn’t so painful, now was it Kim?” Corscan joked while she got out of her seat.
“I guess not.” Kim smiled as she stood up.
“C’mon, let’s get goin’. Don’t wanna make you wait any longer, you might throw a fit.” Corscan winked as she headed towards the back door.
“Ummm, what about my stuff?” Kim asked as she trailed along behind Corscan, seeing that she looked to heading straight outside.
“Don’t worry, Hui will take care of everything. Your gear an’ clothes will be wanderin’ around the island without you, moved to wait at each next location on our little adventure before you get there.” Corscan said as she stepped into the corridor at the back of the plane.
