Kingdom of War 12
Kyoshi’s Request…
“We’re here!”
Aang looked down at the landscape below him as he rode Appa, recognizing it immediately. Though it had been over 100 years, The Eastern Air Temple still looks like a shining beacon for the Avatar. The Temple was composed of three buildings, each built atop of a mountain close by, and connected by bridges. There was a small courtyard in the center building, and that is where Appa swooped down for his landing, followed behind by a Fire Nation War Balloon carrying the Kyoshi Warriors.
“We’re back home, boy.” Aang said, patting Appa on the head before hopping off. The Flying Bison bellowed in approval.
“So this is what the Eastern Air Temple looks like.” Katara marveled.
“Yep.” Aang answered. “This is where female Airbenders received their training. See, over there is the meditation rooms, and the Bison stables are…”
“Lemme guess, they’re over there?” Toph asked, pointing at a doorway to her right.
“…well, yeah.” Aang said, surprised. “How did you know?”
“Lucky guess.” Toph answered, waving her hand in front of her face. “Plus, I take it that it’s been a while since those stables have been cleaned.” As she walked forward, Appa lightly nudged her for that comment. “Hey, the truth hurts, big guy.”
“But I don’t understand.” Sumi chimed in. “If Avatar Kyoshi wanted to talk to you, why here?”
Aang was confused about the Earth Kingdom Avatar’s choice of location as well. “I don’t know, but I’m about to find out…”
He then turned towards the end of the courtyard, where a small doorway was placed. Walking through, he & the others entered a room which showcased a large statue of one of the greatest Airbenders in existence, Avatar Yangchen. Aang stopped right in front of the statue and sat down, his legs folded in front of him. He then pressed his fists against each other in front of him, and closed his eyes, entering a meditative state. A moment later, his tattoos began to glow brightly…
…and in the blink of an eye, Aang found himself in the Spirit World.
“Hello? Anyone here?”
“I am glad you could make it here, Avatar.”
Aang turned to his right to see the reason he was summoned here approaching, Avatar Kyoshi. “Well, it was no problem.” Aang said nervously, still somewhat intimidated by her presence. “But, why did you call me here?”
“Because of the matter you are currently involved in.” She revealed. “I know you’ve been on the move to stop Long Feng from his goal of conquering the Earth Kingdom…and I can’t help but to be reminded of my past conflicts because of his actions.”
“You mean…Chin the Conqueror.” Aang deduced.
“Yes…and what makes this worse, he’s using my creation to help him with his task.” Kyoshi continued. “The Dai Li were slowly being corrupted, turned sinister by those who only had selfish concerns. But I can no longer stand idly by while a new War is on the brink in my homeland.”
“I know.” Aang agreed. “And I will do all I can to stop Long Feng, and bring down the Dai Li.”
“I know you will, Aang.” Kyoshi said. “But to ensure complete victory in this conflict, you cannot do this alone.”
It was with that comment that Aang develop some confusion. “W-What do you mean, Kyoshi?”
“While you are the Avatar, Aang, you were born as an Air Nomad.” She explained. “With no ties to the Earth Kingdom.”
“That doesn’t mean I don’t care about them!” Aang contested. “I care about all nations, I—!”
“Be calm, Aang.” She told him. “I have met many of your people in my life, and I know of their tremendous heart. Still, if this conflict is to be ended effectively, Long Feng must fall by the hand of one of his own countrymen. The people of the Earth Kingdom must know that the Avatar isn’t the only one who will fight tyranny and injustice. They must see an example of an Earthbender fighting for their country.”
Aang stood silent for a moment, before speaking. “I…guess I understand your request. But…I don’t know. It just seems as if there’s something more to this.”
“There is, Aang.” Kyoshi confessed. She then steadied her breath and continued. “One of my descendants has become aligned with Long Feng.”
Aang was taken aback after hearing something so shocking come from the past Avatar. “W-What?”
Kyoshi continued. “My bloodline has remained dedicated to the Earth Kingdom, starting with my daughter Koko. But I’m afraid that a descendant of mine now serves Long Feng, and also shares in his beliefs. I cannot allow this to continue.”
Aang thought over those words, and found himself in complete agreement. “I understand, and I’m all for it. But, it won’t be easy collecting an army of Earthbenders, and we don’t know how long we have until Feng—!”
“You don’t need to, Aang.” Kyoshi interrupted. “You have the perfect candidate right behind you.”
Aang raised an eyebrow and turned around, only to see nothing but clouds. “But, there’s no one…OH! You mean…wait, I know who you mean…”
Back in the Mortal Realm, Katara, Toph & the others waited patiently and quietly as they watched over Aang, though some not as quiet as others.
“Anybody got an idea on how long this is gonna go on?” Toph asked, picking wax out of her ear.
“It’ll end when Aang comes out of it.” Katara said. “Why are you so impatient, anyway?”
Toph grew annoyed. “Well excuse me Princess, for trying to—!”
“Toph!”
All attention turned to Aang, as he was staring directly at the blind Earthbender. “I need you to come over here.”
“Why?” Toph asked.
“Kyoshi wants to speak with you.” Aang answered.
Toph was silent with her reaction for a moment, before laughing it off. “Nice one, twinkle toes. We all know you’re the authority on Spirit talk.”
“I’m serious.” Aang told her. He sounded serious as well, which was what rattled Toph, even though it didn’t show. She complied with Aang’s request and walked over, standing behind him. “Now, put your hand on my shoulder, close your eyes and clear your mind.”
Toph sighed. “Whatever you say…” She was reluctant to even believe that it would work, but as she closed her eyes and exhaled, she found herself in an entirely different landscape.
“What the…”
She started stumbling back, before feeling Aang’s hand grab her wrist to stop her. “Easy, Toph.” He told her. “I know, not a lot of people get to come here, except Avatars.”
“I-it’s not that…” Toph told him. “…I…I can see here. The clouds and the trees…and that big lady who’s standing right in front of us.”
“You’re seeing it through your mind.” Aang explained. “That’s why you can see everything.”
Kyoshi then introduced herself to the young Earthbender. “I’m glad you can join us, Toph. I am Avatar Kyoshi.”
“Whoa.” Toph responded. “I heard stories about you, but…”
“Aang has told me that you were the one who trained him to Earthbend.”
“Yeah, I taught him everything he knows.” Toph boasted. “He was a slow learner at first, but he eventually picked it up.”
“Yeah…” Aang said embarrassed.
“Then I know you will be able to help Aang stop Long Feng from his plans to conquer the Earth Kingdom.” Kyoshi said.
“Yeah, of course I will.” Toph agreed. “I mean, I know Aang’s gonna take him down himself and—!”
“No, Toph.” Kyoshi informed. “Aang’s going to need you by his side during his fight. The Earth Kingdom’s going to need you. There has to be an example, our people must know we won’t lay down for any tyranny put upon us. And with you fighting with the Avatar, they will know.”
Toph was silent after all she heard, taken aback from what the Earth Kingdom’s greatest hero has asked of her. “Whoa…me? I mean, I’m willing to help Aang but…he’s the Avatar! You know, not that I’m saying I can’t…I’m just…”
Her wariness was more than apparent to Kyoshi, who stepped forward and placed her hand on the blind bender’s head. “I have all the confidence in you, Toph. You remind me of myself when I was young, and I know you have limitless potential when it comes to your bending skills.”
And after hearing that, a bright flash of light engulfed the blind bandit. A moment later, she saw nothing but darkness in front of her, but immediately felt her surroundings to be familiar; she was back at the Temple.
“Aang…” Katara walked over to the Avatar and helped him up. “What did Avatar Kyoshi say? Why did she want to talk to Toph?”
Aang was a little uneven upon standing, but it came with the territory of journeys to the Spirit World. “She said I need help to stop Long Feng. She wants Toph to fight alongside me, so that the people of the Earth Kingdom will know one of their own will fight back.”
Katara turned her eyes over to Toph, who had walked to the other side of the room. She was visibly shaken by the experience, as she hung her head and placed her hands on a candlelit table.
“What else did she say?” Sumi asked.
“Come on, I’ll tell you on the ride to Si Wong Desert.” Aang said, ready to make his leave.
“You go on ahead, I’m gonna stay here for a second…” Katara told them. Aang paused for a moment, before realizing she wanted a moment alone with Toph. And he granted it as he & the Kyoshi Warriors left the room. “Toph, are you OK?”
“I’m fine.” Toph answered. “No need for the warm & fuzzy…” Katara scoffed silently and was about to join Aang, until Toph continued. “…it’s just…Kyoshi wants me to fight side-by-side with Aang. I know I’m the best Earthbender…but Aang’s the Avatar. How am I supposed to compete with that? How can I not just…be in the way when he’s fighting, or goes into his little state? I mean…fighting Fire Nation soldiers, that was easy. But…I don’t wanna hold Aang back, or get in his way because…”
“I understand.” Katara chimed in, putting her arm around Toph in a sisterly fashion. But the feeling would evaporate with the next words the Waterbender spoke. “…you don’t think you can do it.”
Toph’s expression instantly changed from doubt to shock. “What did you just say?”
“You don’t believe you can keep up with Aang in a fight.” Katara restated. “I completely understand, you don’t want to be a nuisance for him.”
“I never said th—!”
“You didn’t have to.” Katara interrupted. “He is the Avatar after all, you just can’t compare. I’d be more than happy to take your place and fight alongside him.”
“YOU!?” Toph said in shock.
“Of course.” Katara replied boastfully. “I mean, Waterbenders are more talented in battle than Earthbenders. And—!”
THOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!
The loud rumble and violent tremors shook the entire Temple…and it came simply from Toph’s foot. She had heard enough, and was gonna speak her mind as she stormed towards Katara. “Listen here Sweetness, I’M the one that trained Aang! I’M the one that taught him everything he KNOWS about Earthbending! Without me, he wouldn’t have stood a chance against Ozai! All YOU did was teach him how to move Water! So if ANYONE is gonna fight by Aang’s side it’s NOT gonna be some know-it-all Slushy Princess who…”
Toph halted her verbal attack when she noticed the grin on Katara’s face. “…and you tricked me into this, didn’t you?”
“Pretty much.” Katara said, glad her reverse psychology worked. “But the Slushy Princess comment was a little harsh.” Toph gave off an embarrassed grin as Katara put a hand on her shoulder. “Look, if Avatar Kyoshi believes you can do it, there’s absolutely no reason to doubt yourself. I mean, you can bend Sand, and even Metal! How many Earthbenders can say they’ve done that?”
“Yeah…yeah, you’re right.” Toph agreed. “Heh, guess I just needed a reminder. Thanks, Katara.” And with renewed confidence Toph walked off to join the others, but not without getting the last word. “Oh, and Katara, if you ever make fun of my Earthbending again, I’ll bury you in the ground up to your neck.”
Katara just smiled. She knew Toph only casually meant that threat, and she was happy to help the Earthbender out of her short moment of doubt. As she ran to join her though, she passed by a posted scroll on the wall, just outside the statue room.
“Hmm…I didn’t notice this when we came in…”
The scroll didn’t state much, but as she read, Katara became more intrigued by the second. It told of past legends of the Nations, including one in particular that caught the Waterbender’s attention. It reminded her of stories her Gran-Gran told when she was little, about the Northern Mists and a High Priestess…named Kibami.
“HEY, SUGAR QUEEN! GET THE LEAD OUT!!!” Toph yelled from Appa’s back. “The Earth Kingdom ain’t gonna save itself, you know!”
“Huh? OH!” Snapping out of her daze, Katara rushed back over to the group as they prepared to make their leave.
