Sokka waited at the entrance to the dining hall for Azula and guardsmen Yoro. He did not understand why Yoro asked for this duty. He knew the stone-faced, beady-eyed man respected the princess and would protect her. He just did not understand why now. Zhao could not pay anyone to do this job but now everyone was asking for the chance. It bothered Sokka that no one else thought it was strange.
They turned down the main hall and Sokka watched them approach. She wore a pale blue fabric that accented her golden skin. Her loose hair fell down her back and over her shoulders. She looked as if she was a regular serving girl but he knew differently. She could turn on the venom at any moment.
Yoro could attest to that. That morning he went into her bedroom without warning and received the full brunt of her fury. Sokka arrived and heard the commotion. He entered the room to find Azula covering her washed naked body with a large cloth and screaming at Yoro to leave. He was ignoring her and actually advancing towards her until he saw Sokka. Yoro said nothing as he walked out of Azula’s room.
Sokka remembered seeing something close to fear on her face when he looked at her. He asked her if she was all right but she just pointed to the door and he left.
Azula did not like Yoro. He was loyal to her father not her. Was she the only one to find it strange that he wanted to guard her? She did not like the way he looked at her. This morning was just a preview of all the problems she knew would come if he continued to guard her. She wanted to fry him but for some reason she could not concentrate on the hate, she needed to feel. Her emotions were out of center and until she got them, back she would be powerless and that is not what she wanted with Yoro around.
The fallen princess kept her head lifted as she walked towards Sokka. She could not let him see her concern or slipping confidence. He would claim victory if he saw that. She knew he already seen her tears and it plagued her all night she even cried about it. Why was he still watching her? Why did all the emotions she buried all her life suddenly decide it was time to vent?
She needed to purge herself of these demons. She needed to clear her thoughts and not let the threat of death get the better of her.
Death was final. The voice of reason rang in her mind and body. She felt her body quiver and become weak at the thought of not breathing again, bending again. Azula shook her head closing her eyes for a moment to gather her strength. She had always been strong nothing could break her.
She opened her eyes and looked at Sokka as she approached and he was watching her as he always did. He did not wear his helmet today as Yoro. He stood as one of those strong men the women fawned over because of their strength and beauty. He was emotionless as he stared at her. She knew he was laughing inside. She wanted anger to fill her body but there was nothing but sorrow. She was nothing; she was…nothing.
A feeling of tightness swept across her body and an urgency of tears threatened to manifest itself in her eyes. She could feel the moisture forming with every step she took. Her breaths came in gasps and she stopped walking.
“I wish to have my breakfast in my room.”
Yoro came forward frowning as he walked past her with authoritative steps. “You will have your meal in the dining room.”
Sokka looked past Yoro and saw the shimmering moisture threatening to fall from her eyes. Her body trembled as she took the final steps towards the hall.
“As you wish Princess,” He bowed to her and Yoro stopped in his tracks and looked at his Captain.
“You would go against the Emperor.”
Sokka stared down at the shorter man frowning at him. “There is no order that she eat here only that she eat alone and if she wishes to eat in her room then so be it.”
Yoro bowed his head. A confrontation with his captain was not what Yoro wanted or needed. He did not want the captain watching him; he wanted to blend into the surroundings but he feared he had caused himself damage by questioning Sokka’s order. Once the captain had his nose into something, it was impossible to shake him.
What was he up to? Sokka wondered as he continued staring down at the first man that had ever talked back to him in the entire army. He had built his reputation on pain. He took nothing but compliance from his men and if they did not give it, he had his ways of getting him to agree.
Sokka looked past Yoro’s shoulder at Azula. Her body still trembled with the threat of collapse. Yoro turned from him preparing to take her back to her room and he would have allowed it if she had not looked at him with a look of pleading for him.
Yoro felt the iron grip of his captain on his wrist and he had to stop. He looked up at the frowning man with a question.
“You go inform the kitchen to prepare the princess’s meal and bring it to her room. I will escort her back. You can return to Commander Zhao and I will see you later." Sokka released him and walked towards Azula and saw relief on her face for a fleeting second before she turned and her hair shielded her face.
Yoro watched them walk down the hall until they disappeared around the corner. A curse came from his mouth as he shoved the dining hall doors open.

“Has he said this to you Yoro? I know before that he wanted off this assignment but she is in danger and requires his protection.” Zhao did not look up at the man before his desk.
Yoro maintained his solid stance knowing there were hidden men in the room watching him.”He thinks his skills would be better in the field.”
Zhao turned over the last paper on his desk and looked up at Yoro. “Why were you in her room?”
His confidence shook a bit but Yoro maintained his tall stance. “I could not hear a response and I went to investigate. I apologized many times Commander.”
“She has asked to remove you and so has the Captain.”
Yoro looked at Zhao. “I am sorry that I offended them. I promise that I will work harder.”
Zhao studied the man carefully. He was a man of his word. He would work harder to impress Sokka and even Azula. Yoro was of the Ozai teachings. He was loyal to Ozai and Ozai only. Zhao knew if he sent him back to Sokka, he would have one less recruit. The captain did not sound pleased in their conversation after breakfast. He thought Yoro had reasons other than wanting to help Azula.
“I believe that you will work harder to impress our Captain Yoro and I believe that you will accomplish your goal but you will do this here. You are off the assignment as of now. I cannot have you upsetting the captain now can I?”
His solid stance crumpled and he stared at the Commander. ‘What, I am sorry please don’t let the others see that I have failed?”
Zhao frowned up at the man before him. “But you have,”
“Sir please I will do anything. I will guard the kitchen just let me prove to you that I am trustworthy.”
Zhao stood and grabbed the papers off his desk.”You are trustworthy Yoro but you will rejoin the men.”
The commander came around the desk as Yoro bowed. Zhao walked past him and Yoro followed.

She was silent looking out her window as he watched her from across the room. She seemed weaker than normal. She could not contain her emotions as she had before the exile. After her breakfast arrived, Sokka left her to enjoy it. He knew that her tears flowed the moment he left. He returned around midday knowing her composure would be stronger by then.
All the years of fighting herself had finally caught up with her. She had no defense against nature. She was confused and frightened by her lack of restraint; he could see it in her eyes when she looked at him; if she looked at him. She kept her distance from him and rarely spoke since he returned.
“Yoro will not be here anymore.”
He watched her shoulders slump with relief. “He is not loyal to your army. You should not trust him.”
“I am more concerned about you.”
Azula heard movement behind her and stood up to face him as he approached. She backed into the wall and looked down as he stood before her. She wanted him to leave but she could not find the words to tell him so.
“Why didn’t you bend this morning?”
He expected her to blame the fact that she was naked but that was not what she offered. She was silent for a long while; as he moved closer, placing the palms of his hands on the wall on either side of her waist. She still did not look up at him. She mumbled something and Sokka lowered his head closer towards hers to hear her.
“I cannot bend.” Her voice was even lower as she spoke again.
He wanted to raise her chin but he could not touch her. It was law.
“In your situation I would not be surprised if that was the case. I know that in bending your mind must focus as it is in any type of fighting or meditation. If you are not centered there is nothing to draw from.” His voice was softer to match hers.
Her head rose as he spoke those words. Sokka moved closer inches from touching her body. She tried to move back but she was already against the wall. He stared into her eyes. He remembered the incident in her room as did his body and they both wanted to relive it with a different outcome. He felt her trembling and she looked away from his deep stare.
“Toph, will want to see you now that I am confined you will have time to win her.”
The mentioning of her name was like cold water on his body. Sokka slowly pulled back from her but did not move away. He should have been thinking of her himself. He did not know why he was not.
Azula looked up at him. “I would like to lie down before lunch.”
His arms and body imprisoned her against the wall. It took him a moment to move away but he did and Azula moved past him slowly. She knew he was watching her walk into her bedroom. She closed her eyes and walked around the corner. She did not know if she had the strength to deny him if he came into her room. Despite her situation, she still wanted him.
She sat on her bed and removed her shoes. She set them aside and lay down on her pillows. She had her back to the door but she knew he was there in her doorway. When she heard the sound of his armor touch, the floor Azula drew her legs up into the fetal position, closed her tear-filled eyes, and hugged her body tightly as it rejoiced.
