Chapter 8
Sky lived in apartment in an ancient-looking building that should have been condemned. His apartment was two floors from the top and rather small, with a total of five rooms. The door opened onto the living room that was four inches lower than the rest of the apartment, which was divided in half, with dining room—which was practically a hall defined only by the ledge and the kitchen counter—and the kitchen on the left and the bathroom and master bedroom on the right, respectively from the living room.
"Well, here are we," said Sky, closing the door behind him and Jake. "I know it is small, but it is the best I can do."
"It's nice," replied Jake, glancing around.
"There are sandwiches in the kitchen, somewhere. I am going to take a shower. You can take one after me. Feel free to look around. Put on a 45."
"A what?"
"Vinyl," said Sky, at the bathroom door, before closing it.
Jake heard the water turn on, as he began his tour. The living room contained a couch and a small in table, with the walls were lined with a chaotically organized mess. The dining room was made of one table and three chairs. The kitchen was simple and bare; it lacked most modern utensils, yet Sky's sandwiches were still delicious.
Jake was hesitant to enter Sky's bedroom. The room was his private sanctuary…but then Sky did say he was not going to hide anything, so Jake entered.
The first thing he noticed was that this room more than any was engulfed in Sky's scent—Jake could imagine what Sky and his past lovers might have done to spread that scent. The room held one full-sized bed, two sets of drawers, and one small desk. The door that connected this room to the bathroom was open. Jake could see Sky showering through the shower curtain in the mirror. Jake walked over to Sky's desk. On it laid a pile of yellowed newspaper clippings, all from a paper called "The Freed Anubian Press", with headlines including:
Anubian Liberation
The Dragon Council Allows the Anubian People to Self-Govern
Anubian Government Formed
The Anubian Constitution Has Been Signed into Law
A City for Anubians
Internment Camp One is to be Renamed "Anubian Settlement"
Anubian Settlement for Anubians
All Non-Anubians Must Leave the Settlement
On the bottom of the pile, Jake found the only article with a photograph. The photograph was of a flame red Anubian being led out of a building surrounded by police officer-looking Anubians. It read:
The First Convicted Anubian Criminal
A shadow has fallen on the Anubian Settlement this day, as Cytros Trecdos was escorted to prison. Trecdos was convicted of just under 2000 [someone had crossed out this name with a black pen and written in 4000] counts of child molestation, sexual misconduct with a minor, and the raping of a minor, all counts relating to a single victim and several counts of fraud and embezzlement. He was sentenced to life without any chance of amnesty. Nothing is known about his victim except that he or she is minor. Trecdos' wife, Esemjae Antrubus and his son, Radae Trecdos were both killed by "rogue" dragons. There are rumors of Trecdos having a second son but no documents can confirm this, and the son is nowhere to be found.
Continued on 3A
Jake set the clipping down and sat down on Sky's bed, absorbing the articles. "I shouldn't be here," he muttered, laying his head in his hands. "This man wants to have a relationship with me. He wants to have sex with me. I know he says he doesn't because I said no, but it's just putting a strain on me staying here. Why do I trust him? Because he says, he loves me? He's 128 years old. I'm thirteen. By him saying he loves me, proves he's a pervert and a pedophile. Why can I look into his eyes and believe he would never try to hurt me? Why do I feel safe near him? What do I feel for him? How can I feel for him? He's 128. I can't feel anything for him. I shouldn't.... I'm not gay. I don't love him. I don't understand. What's happening to me?" He sat in silence for a minute or two, when he noticed the corner of a blue folder sticking out from under Sky's bed. He reached down and picked it up. It was marked "confidential." He opened it.
It was a medical file from some clinic.
Patient: Skylar Trecdos
Brief Summary of Patient's History: Patient was molested and rape by an Anubian. He suffers the effects of the numerous—
"You do know it is rude to read one's private medical files without permission," interrupted Sky.
Jake jumped to his feet, dropping the file. Sky stood at bathroom door, a towel wrapped around his waist, water droplets still clinging to his fur.
"I'm sorry," said Jake. "Skylar?"
"No. My name is Sky. I had it legally changed."
"Trecdos?"
"Once."
"Related to Cytros Trecdos?"
"My father."
"He raped you, didn't he?"
Sky sat down on his bed. Jake turned to him. "Yes," he said, not looking at Jake. "Jake, I was going to wait on telling you this, but…. My father raped from the age of seven to eighteen. The last five years of that…I was his lover…willing lover." Sky looked at Jake, his eyes slowly watering. "He brainwashed me…manipulated me. It took ten years of psychiatric care for me to regain my mind. That is where that file came from. You can understand why I changed my name from Skylar Cytros Trecdos. I do not want to be reminded of what happened to me."
"What are newspapers articles about?"
"The history of the Anubian people. It is complicated and it would be best if you heard it from a dragon before an Anubian."
"Why?"
"Because it involves dragons and the Dragon Council of old." Sky stood up. "Jake, could we discontinue this? You can take your shower, if you want to, while I put some clothes on. I will not invade your privacy.
Jake and Sky spent most of the day in silence, neither doing much of anything, both struggling to find words to begin a conversation. Around 6:30, Sky made a simple bean and vegetable dinner saying, "I have not gone to the market recently." He and Jake ate in silence.
"Jake," said Sky, sitting across from Jake at table, after he finished cleaning the dishes, "can we talk about what is happening between us?"
"Nothing's happening."
"What happened has yet to end. I can bury my feelings, I can hide them so you do not see them, but I have feelings for you that I cannot explain, yet I must explain. I want you to know the truth of how I can love you and why. I am not pedophile and I am not like my father. I want you to understand, even if we never see each other after this."
"You said you wouldn't talk about this if I didn't want to."
"I will uphold what I said, but please, let me explain."
"Okay, but don't try to kiss me."
"I would not try without your permission. The first thing you need to realize is that I am in no way human, though we do share several genetic markers. Anubians do not work like humans or dragons."
"How so?"
"How many sets of internal organs do you have? One. I have double the organs you do, excluding the nervous and reproductive systems. You might have also have noticed that when I speak in standard, I do not use contractions. It is an ethological trait. But more to the point, Anubians do not fall in love as humans do. You date and try to find someone you care about deeply and can spend the rest of your lives with. Anubians have soul mates, destined mates. We spend our lives searching for our soul mates. And every Anubian has only one soul mate, one love and only one. You are my soul mate."
"How do you know?"
"It feels right. In my heart, it feels right. I knew before I knew who you were. I knew before I knew your name. Whether it was the first kiss or the second, or during that night's actions, or before even that, I do not know exactly when I knew. But I am in love with you."
"And how many times have you said that to a lover."
"Never. Excluding family, you are the only one I have ever said 'I love you' to. 'Love' is a powerful word to Anubians. It is not used lightly. One love is all we have. We do not use the word in vain."
"So it was love at first sight?"
"No. Attraction at first sight? Yes."
"Difference?"
"For Anubians there is a big difference. Before we find our soul mates, we do go through what you might call the dating phase, or period of attraction, where we are attracted to others. It is like your dating, except there is no hope of falling in love and having a future together." Sky tried to take Jake's hand, but he stopped short. Drawing back his hand, he lowered his head and uttered softly, "I wish we could have dated before I fall in love with you. The Anubian-way is not the greatest….
"Things have not happed the way I wanted them to. When I saw you sitting at the bar I was attracted to you. Normally, I would have just ignored you, because you are not my first non-Anubian attraction and I was not planning on sleeping with another that evening. But you were a dragon and I was attracted to you, I had to know why. Then I fell in love. I thought you were eighteen. You were drinking in a bar that requires you to be at least eighteen to enter. How was I supposed to know? By the time I realized the truth, it was far too late; I was hooked. I am sorry, if I pushed too hard. I did not mean to pressure you. I do not want you to be hurt. I thought you approved and were okay with what happened that night."
"I did approve."
"You did? Then why did you leave me?"
Jake looked up to find Sky staring at him, his eyes pleading for an answer. "How did you know?"
"I was awake. I thought you need time to yourself after what we did. I did not think you would leave. What did I do? It was after that that everything went to hell. I told you I loved you."
"Sky, everyone says they love you after sex and I didn't want to start a relationship…especially with another man."
"I am not like that. I respect every being I have slept with, except my father. I am still friend with some of them…that are still alive."
"You've lost friends?"
"A lot. After I was released from the clinic, I could not return, not to where my father…. I left the Anubian Settlement. That was 1905. I did not gain many friends. I could not open up to trust people and so few people ever tried to get close to me. Most that are alive cannot forgive me for leaving. So I have virtually no friends and I have not had a 'lover' for forty years."
"If things could've happened the way you wanted, what would've happened?"
"If you had not left and we were not imprisoned, breakfast at a little restaurant I know. Then a chance to talk, what we are doing now, just earlier, with me telling you everything, not that griffin. After that, I do not know. It would have been up to you, like it is now."
"How did you know my name?"
"That is complicated."
"Try me."
"I touched your mind."
"What?"
"It happens sometimes between Anubian mates. A psychological link, a mind link per se, is formed. I do not know much about the science of it, but I apparently have that 'gift.'"
"So you know what I'm thinking and feeling?"
"No. Your mind is closed to me. Only went you are relax, connected to me, somehow, is there a chance a link could occur. I have no control over it, just as you do not."
"What do you mean?"
"You entered my mind last night. You back hacked the link, for lack of a better term, and entered my subconscious. You things saw things I keep hidden; some I do not even know exist. I do not know what you saw. You did not enter my conscious. But I am sorry for intruding in your mind without permission."
"At least, now I know you weren't stalking me. How did you realize I was in your mind, I didn't even know you entered mine?"
"When you mind has been manipulated like mine has you become aware of mental intrusions…. Look, I understand you have no intentions of having a relationship with me, but now you know everything…my love."
"Don't call me…" Jake voice tailed off, as what Sky had said rolled through his mind.
Sky stood up and left Jake to his thoughts.
That night Jake slept in Sky's bed, surrounded by Sky's scent, while Sky slept on his couch.

Jake awoke with a loud knock on the door. He stood up, as he heard the front door open. He peered into dining room to find Sky, dressed in nothing but a pair of boxer's shorts, sitting down with an elderly gentleman.
"What are you doing here?" asked Sky harshly.
"Why so harsh? Someone sharing your bed?" asked the elderly man.
"Me sharing my secrets with you ended forty years, Ross," snapped Sky.
"You use to call me by first name," said Ross.
"We use to be lovers."
"You're still pissed at me. I've been coming to check up on you for the pasted forty years and you're pissed at me for something I did when I was thirty-two. You're the one who hit on the general's son when we were still involved."
"How was I supposed to know he was the general's son? He was cute. The general was ugly."
Ross laughed out at this. "You slept with him when he was a corporal."
Sky smiled and chuckled a little. "Why did I tell you that?"
"You trusted me."
"With my life. I am sorry about the general's son. I should have been more loyal back then, but he was great in bed."
"You never told me you slept with him."
"Who said I had sex with him. He could alcohol about as well as I can."
"You mean one drop and he was out."
"A little bit more and he was out for the night…in my bunk. I had to sleep somewhere."
"You dog."
"Absolutely nothing happened. He was a great pillow…. Of course, he never knew that, so he thought what the hell, and we had a relationship for a week, before his father found out. But we never shared a bed after that one night."
"You still cheated on me."
"You betrayed me."
The laughter and smiling stopped, as the jovial atmosphere evaporated into one of seriousness and tension.
"Look, Sky," said Ross. "I didn't think you would take it this hard, but we can't keep doing this, with you being it up every time I visit. I come here three or four times a year, can you leave it alone?"
"No."
"You stubborn Anubian and you wonder why your species is hated."
"You never apologized, you son of bitch," shouted Sky.
"And I never will."
"If you were not so old I would punch you."
"You've done that before."
"I told you our relationship was not serious, that I was not able to fall in love with you."
"That's what you do. You let people fall in love with you and you run off, you detaching bastard."
"You are still in love with me! I—"
"No, I am no longer in love with you. I got over you a long time ago."
"Then why not apologize."
"Because I don't have to. You're retired and I control whether or not you receive your pension."
"You—"
"You should watch how you talk to your elders."
"I have 56 years on you."
"Relative to my lifespan, you're only twenty."
"Except I lost a heart."
"That wasn't my fault. You lost it before I met you."
"Yeah," said Sky, distantly. "Why are we friends? We barely get along."
"You like him a lot, don't you?"
"Huh?"
"Your boyfriend."
"I do not—we are not—huh?"
"I noticed you slept on the couch. You never push those you care about."
"When did we get to this subject?"
"Are you ready to settle down?"
"Can we go back to arguing?"
"You like him?"
"Do not."
"You love him?"
"Stop."
"You finally found him. He doesn't love you, does he? He's not ready, is he?"
"Why are you here?"
"Your life's in danger. They found you. You need to leave."
Sky went rigid.
"I'm sorry, it will also cost you ten years of your pension. I know you only have twenty years left. Anywhere you want to go, though. I'm sorry. I know this has been your home since you left. Call me with your answer."
Ross stood up and left.
Sky did not move; Jake could see a small trail of tears on his cheeks. "Damn it," he whispered.
Jake entered the kitchen, and leaning over the counter, he stared at Sky.
"I knew you were awake," said Sky. "You overheard, did you not?"
"Yes," said Jake.
"I have no where else go," said Sky, more to himself than to Jake.
"Who would want to kill you?" asked Jake, unsure of how to console Sky.
"Remember, I said I have secrets that must remain secrets."
"Why?"
"I interfered with their plans. Now, I must leave this place I have called home for so long, leave even Egypt. To where?" Sky stood, dried his eyes with the back of his hand, and moved beside Jake. "When are you being picked up?"
"8:00."
"That is a half-hour before you need to leave. Unfortunately, I do not have anything for breakfast." Sky turned to head into his bedroom. "I am going to change for the day."
"Sky," said Jake, transforming into his dragon-self to grab Sky's shoulder. "Come to New York."
Sky turned to Jake. "Why?"
"To be safe."
"No. You do not want me near you. I will not let a chance meeting occur."
"I'm not sure about that. What you said—"
"Stop," said Sky firmly, take a step away from Jake. "Do not pity me. You go on with your life, while I go on with mine and you pretend this never happened, but do not pity me."
"It's not pity. I don't know about us. If you come to New York, you'll be safe and it will give us a chance."
"Jake, you made yourself clear."
Jake took step closer to Sky. "I know…. You love me, don't you?"
Sky backed away from Jake. "I have been saying that."
"You mean it, don't you?" said Jake, slowing moving towards Sky, as Sky continued to moved away.
"Yeah." Sky felt his bed behind him. "Jake, what are you doing?"
Jake stopped in front of Sky. He ran his claws threw Sky's chest fur, as stared into Sky's confused eyes. "Taking a chance. A lot can happen in thirty minutes." He leaned forward and kissed Sky.
"I cannot," said Sky, pulling away.
Jake kissed him again.
"I should not."
Jake pushed him onto the bed, climbed atop him, and kissed him deeply.
"Well, if you want me." Sky wrapped his arms around Jake.
"Just promise me one thing," said Jake softly.
"Anything."
"You'll never try to hurt me…ever."
"I swear until the end of time, if you promise to always say no when you feel uncomfortable and never treat yourself or me as a sex object."
"Deal."
Their tongues entwined, as their bodies pressed against each other.
Twenty-five minutes later, Jake and Sky lie close together, naked, looking into each other's eyes.
"What does this make us?" asked Jake.
"Anything, you wanted," replied Sky, smiling.
"Why are you smiling?"
"Jake, I do not care if I am your boyfriend or just a friend. You have given me a chance to be with you, my love."
"Do you expect me to call you that?"
"No. Do you want me to stop?"
"No, there's no need to stop. How much time do we have?"
"None. I will get you a ride, while you make sure you are ready."
Six minutes later, Sky shouted, "Your ride is here, Jake."
Once Jake was at the door, Sky dropped to his knees and hugged Jake tenderly. "I will see you in a week's time."
"Okay," replied Jake, hugging Sky back. "Meet me on the Empire State Building."
"Where in the building?"
"The highest terrace you can get to."
"See you then."
And Jake headed out the door.
- - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Once home, Jake reported straight to his grandfather's shop. There he filled his grandfather and Fu dog in on his mission's results, without mentioning Sky.
"So how did you enjoy Egypt, kid?" asked Fu, when Lao Shi left the room to contact the Dragon Council.
"It was fine," said Jake vaguely.
"Find someone to spend your three extra days with?" said Fu, nudging Jake with his elbow.
An image of Sky flashed before Jake's eyes. "Fu, I'm only thirteen."
"Such a pity," respond Fu.
"Fu, what is an Anubian?"
"Where did you hear that name?"
"I overheard it."
"I could see that." Fu Dog sighed. "The Anubian people……. They predate humanity and some say dragon-kind. In terms of ancient history that's about all that's known. They hate dragons. They stay to their city and ignore the rest of the magical world."
"Why do they hate dragons?"
"Because dragons hate them. Not all, but a surprising majority. You see, kid, the whole Dragon-Anubian Conflict started along time ago, a couple thousand-years or so, maybe more. No one can remember why it started, except the Anubians. All that is known is that the Anubians attacked and the dragons were sent in to help. The fight lasted until all the Anubians were captured and sent to what is now called Anubian Settlement. They were under dragon-law until they formed their own government about a hundred years ago and they can't forget or forgive. If you're lucky, kid, you'll never meet one."
Jake smiled inwardly at this, as he muttered to himself, "I must be really unlucky to have one fall in love with me."
