That Afternoon . . .
Everyone seemed to be happy to see the ghost depart. Everyone, that is, except the mint director and Quentin Randolph. The Ghostbusters and their wives met with them in the very meeting room that was the site of the original haunting to discuss terms and payment. The mint executives were not very happy to find out about the deal the Ghostbusters made to rid them of the ghost. “This is unthinkable! That . . . dead woman has no right to impose such demands on the American government.”
“Hey, you used her likeness, now she wants a little something in return,” Kayla replied. “Sacagawea is the only reason Lewis and Clark survived that trip at all, and she did it carrying a baby. It’s only fair she finally get a little recognition.”
“Well . . . we can’t do it,” the director tried to backpedal. “The bill is already written for two faces, not one on the coin.”
“That’s easy enough to fix,” Kel replied. “Put her on the coin carrying the son in a papoose on her back.”
The director frowned at Randolph, as if their ability to dispute his every complaint were the younger man’s fault. Quentin stammered a rebuttal. “L-Look! The deal was with you gentlemen, not your wives. So we technically don’t owe you anything! Either you get her to change her mind or we won’t pay!”
“Oh, I beg to differ,” Peter said with a smirk. “You made the deal with the two companies, not us men personally. Mrs. Spengler and Mrs. Stantz are employees of our company. They can deputize anyone they want to finish a job. You personally promised to pay whatever the mint wouldn’t if we rid you of your ghost problem. I have the contract right here. We’ve kept up our end. You’ll pay or we’ll see your ass in court.”
The man flushed and began to sweat as he watched his boss’s brow crease even more. He hadn’t intended for him to know about that. “Well, then I’ll pay your company, but there was no representative of the other company, so I won’t be paying them.”
Eddie frowned and balled his fists, but Jake placed a hand on his shoulder to restrain him. “You really don’t want to do that, Mr. Randolph.”
Quentin started to feel a sense of security. He smiled smugly at Jake and Eddie. “And why is that, Mr. Kong?”
Jake smirked in much the same way Peter had. “Sweetheart? Could you?”
Jessica stepped forward and stood toe-to-toe with the man. “Because we were representing the company when we helped bust your ghost in their uniforms. As residents of Ghost Command, we have the right to suit up in emergencies and have gone on paid busts in the past. And besides, if you screw with us, I’ll be forced to do an in-depth exposé on how the U.S. Mint treats its female employees. I’ve already got a witness.” She winked at Sharon, who smiled and blushed.
The director decided to try a little ‘honey’ instead of ‘vinegar’. “Sharon, dear. Why don’t you help us out? I’ll give you Randolph’s promotion and raise!”
“What?!?” Quentin demanded.
The director ignored him. “What do you say, Sharon?”
“I say, my name is Ms. Parker! And I wanted to wait to give this to you but now’s as good a time as any.” She handed him a signed letter. He looked at it in bewilderment. “It’s my resignation. I’m going back to my hometown university to finish my graduate degree in political science. Perhaps one day I’ll be a congresswoman and help to make sure that women are given a voice in the national legislature.” She smiled at Neil. It just so happened that her hometown university was the school where Neil was entering his final year as a double major in physics and parapsychology. They were definitely going to make an effort to get to know each other.
The director was angry now. “There is no way I’ll allow you to quit without two weeks’ notice! I’ll fire you first, you ungrateful little tramp!”
She laughed aloud, unaffected by the insult. “I bet you would, but my permission to leave comes from a higher official than you.” She pulled another letter from her purse and handed it to him. It basically said that Sharon would be leaving the mint and going back to school. It was signed by the official she mentioned, who lent her his full support. In not so many words, the director was ordered not to interfere or he’d risk a ‘presidential reprimand’. So much for the director’s influence on Sharon’s career!
That was the last straw! The director decided that he’d had enough. “Look, you can take your damn pay, but we won’t let some crazy, busy-body, dead bitch tell us what to do with our coin!”
“Oh, is THAT what I am?” They all looked up and saw Susan B. Anthony’s spirit hovering above them. “Well, why don’t I show you how much of a bitch I can be?” And with that, the two men learned what it would feel like if their ‘chestnuts’ were ‘roasting’. It didn’t take much torture before they were offering her anything she wanted if she’d just stop. “All I want is for you to honor the agreement I made, and I will never bother your mint again.” She turned to the director. “Unless of course, you make me have to bother you again.” He gulped and shook his head to indicate that he wanted no more trouble. “Then I take it we have a deal?” she asked.
“Y-Y-Yes.” He shook her ectoplasmic hand and then cleaned his hand with a silk handkerchief.
“Have a nice rest, Susan,” Janine said.
“Thank you. I will now . . . thanks to all of you.” And with that she disappeared.
“So,” Peter said. “About our bills . . .”
