Chapter 11: Anything is Possible.
(Middleton Presbyterian Church - Middleton, Colorado - June 14th, 1962)
The sign by the door told him this was the sight of the Possible - Smith wedding and that it started at ten o'clock. Gideon Stoppable checked his watch as he passed through the doors. He still had five minutes, but knew she would deride him for being late anyway. Just inside the foyer, he paused to remove his overcoat.
“You're late.”
He looked over at the doors to the church proper, and saw her. She was resplendent in her wedding gown. Many things had changed in the last sixteen years, but she still looked much that same as she did when they first met. Nobody would ever guess she was forty-four years old, or that her real name was Nanette Maiden. He was the only one who knew that. To the rest of the world, she was ten years younger and her name was Nancy Smith.
“Nancy, you look lovely. And I'm right on time, thank you very much.”
Gideon grinned at her, as she dismissed the bridesmaid who was fussing with her dress. He knew she wanted a private moment before the ceremony began. There was a question she always asked when they encountered one another. A question neither one of them wanted to be overheard. A question he had yet to be able to give her a satisfactory answer to.
“Any word about Hall?”
He sighed and shook his head. “None. Nothing since the rumor a couple years ago that he was spotted with Josef Mengele in Argentina. Don't fret about it. The Mossad and Global Justice are still searching for him. He can't hide forever.”
She nodded and closed her eyes for a moment. He knew she was putting the past out of her thoughts. Focusing her mind on the here and now instead. It was an ability he both envied and pitied at the same time. From what he gathered from Hall's research notes during the cleanup at Camp Nowhere, it was just one of the many changes wrought by the Nazi scientist's experiments. It was also one of the few things never spoken of between them.
Her eyes opened as the church organ began to play the bridal march. Gideon crooked his arm and she took it. Both of them smiled as he escorted her down the aisle.
Heads turned as they slowly made their way toward the alter. The groom's side of the church was packed with his family and friends. The bride's side was less so. There were a few friends she made over the years, but no family. There was also one person who Gideon knew she would never call friend. He was a large man sitting in the second row. His head was topped by an ill fitting hairpiece that covered some ugly scar tissue above his ear. If not for that man, she would be in prison right now. His name was Barkin.
Blood and tears covered the face of the frightened and confused man. He cowered as General Stoppable towered over him. Nanette's hand flashed out and caught the general's arm before before he could strike. “No! Don't do it. If he really doesn’t know who or what he is, it would be wrong to kill him now.”
That moment of compassion changed everything. Her willingness to save the man who raped and tortured her was a shock and a revelation. It showed him she might not be the monster he, and the rest of the world, believed her to be. Instead of sending her back to prison with the other few remaining survivors, he decided to give her the new life she so desperately wanted.
After he sealed away all records of Hall's experiments at Camp Nowhere, he brought both Nanette and Barkin to his home town of Middleton. Here both of them could start over. His choice wasn't just for their benefit though. He wanted them under his watchful eye. Just in case he was wrong about her, or Barkin showed signs of remembering. It was over a decade and a half later and he had no cause to regret what he'd done.
Their trek down the aisle was over. Gideon gave the bride away to her soon to be husband and took a seat next to his wife in the first row.
Magdalena Stoppable cradled their sleeping infant son in her arms as she leaned over an whispered to him. “You were almost late.”
He grinned and rolled his eyes. “I got here didn't I?”
Together they watched with the rest of the assembly as the minister performed the ancient rite.
Gideon turned his attention to the groom as the couple exchanged their vows. He didn't really know a whole lot about Simon James Possible. He knew the two of them met during the time Nancy spent in the Navy. They became friends while she was in a special project testing the viability of women in the Navy's Basic Underwater Demolition teams. The project was scrapped, even though she proved herself just as capable as any of the men. When she returned home from the service a month ago, she brought Possible with her.
He suppressed the urge to laugh as they exchanged rings. There was one other thing he knew about Possible. He was just as much a homosexual as his bride. Nobody else in Middleton knew that little fact though. When he asked her why they were getting married, her reply was earnest. They were friends. They enjoyed each other's company, and both of them wanted children. Getting married, she told him, was not only a good way to accomplish that goal, but would also keep their true sexuality a secret. He had not pried anymore after that.
Leaning forward slightly, he glanced to the other side of his wife, at the one other person sitting in the front pew. The young widow Greenfield was a sultry-eyed, rubenesque, blonde. She was also Nancy's one true love. In public they were just friends. In private... Well... Gideon really didn't want to think about that.
The minister brought the ceremony to a close as he announced the new couple to the world. Gideon caught Nancy's eye as she strode up the aisle with her husband. They exchanged knowing smiles. He was glad things turned out the way they had. With her past behind her, she could look forward to a bright and happy future.
