Ep. 4 - The Wedding
"Do you love me?"
"Yes."
"Would you marry me if there wasn't a political reason?"
Zuko appeared to give the question some thought before leaning against the balcony. "I don't have an easy answer, Mai."
"Seems like a straight forward question to me," Mai said stoically. "I'm not leaving one political relationship just to be trapped in another."
Zuko tried to touch her but she moved out of his reach.
"Katara is going to be really hurt when she finds out."
Mai crossed her arms and stared out over the city, but the mention of Katara had softened her. She had thought of her often since their parting.
"It's complicated," Zuko continued. "My uncle is right. Things need to start changing here and this will bring us closer to the people. Nothing has ever been easy for me, and it never will be, but at least I'll be doing the right thing. I've always tried to do things on my own, but now I know that I need help. Uncle says things happen for a reason and I think you and Katara are right for this nation. I don't want to choose between you."
"You don't have to." The words were out before she knew they were coming, but after hearing herself say them she knew they were true. Things hadn't been the same since they left Katara by the pond. Surrounded by the political reality of royalty had strained things between them.
"Katara might not feel the same way," Zuko said, but his eyes shown and Mai knew she'd taken some of the weight off his shoulders.
"She will," Mai thought out loud. "She'll probably have a million excuses to hate you by the time she sees you again, but she will come around."
"You will be there to help," he said.
Mai faced him. "No I won't."
Looking hard at her he asked, "Why?"
"Because you're right. We have a responsibility to our people, and to the other nations to do what we can to end this war the right way. Katara raised an army. You will be training the Avatar. I will stay here."
"Mai…" Zuko protested.
"I have a part in this too, Zuko. If I stay I can send you information."
"You don't have to do that."
"I know," she cut him off again. "I would love to leave with you. I want to leave with you, but this war has to end. I ignored everything until Azula dragged me into it. Now if we don't do something we'll probably both end up dead. If there is any way I can help then I will."
"If we're married and I disappear everyone will suspect you."
"Not if I'm forced to marry you. Thanks to Mita, Azula thinks I hate you. She is always baiting me with it, so it will be easy to keep up the charade."
"It will be dangerous," he said in a controlled tone that told her he understood but wasn't happy. Mai felt relief quickly followed by dread. "If Azula finds out…"
"I know." Mai closed the distance between them and Zuko's arms went around her. Her breath caught and she remembered how well they fit together.
"Will you marry me, Mai?"
He pulled her into his body and kissed her. Heat rushed up her spine to the crown of her head. He stared down at her, waiting for her answer while she caught her breath.
"Yes."

"Aren't there any villages that need rescuing or soldiers that need to be taught a lesson?" Toph sat up and spread out her arms. "This is boring!" She fell back to the ground between Aang and On ji.
"Shu Jing is surrounded by mountains and everyone here is wealthy. No soldiers, no rescuing," Aang answered sadly.
"How long does it take to become a sword master?" asked On ji.
"It took me years to master air bending."
"So...we're going to wait here for years?"
"Sokka just needs the basics for now. Probably just a few days," said Katara.
"Days? I can't do this for days." Toph covered her face with her hands.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Zuko, I received some disturbing news." Ozai stepped down from the dais where fire rose and fell to compliment the Fire Lord's discontent. For the first time in his life Zuko saw how dramatic and foolish it really was.
"What news?" Zuko kept his head down as he knelt. It was easier to hide his disgust if he didn't have to look at Ozai.
"It has become public knowledge that our crowned prince is against my marriage to Azula. There is talk that you might be planning to usurp the throne."
Zuko felt the heat from the dais on his face. A drop of sweat hit the floor by his foot. "I would never plan such a thing," he said. Zuko had let rumors of his disapproval leak out to the soldiers, knowing they would be the fastest way to spread the rumor to the people, however Ozai would bring about the end of his own reign.
"Why do you not address me?"
"Of course, Father." The word stung Zuko's tongue, but he cursed himself for deepening Ozai's suspicion.
"You will be present at the ceremony?"
"Of course, Father."
"Good. There's one more thing," Ozai said, stretching his syllables.
"Yes, Father?"
"Once the baby is born you will no longer be the crowned prince. Our son will be the next Fire Lord."
"Yes, Father." Zuko's stomach twisted at 'our son'. They were both strangely unaware of anything they didn't want to examine, like a father marrying his daughter. Ozai peered at him, judging his sincerity.
"That is all."
Zuko heard the suspicion in his voice, but needed to put the next part of the plan in motion. "Father?"
"Yes?" he said derisively.
"I wish to marry." A pregnant pause hung between them.
"So soon?"
"Your upcoming wedding has inspired me."
"Who?"
"Mai." Another pause.
"Since you are no longer the crowned prince she may not want to marry you. I thought there was a rift between you?"
"It is not her choice and crowned or not I am still a prince. Her family will be happy that she is marrying royalty regardless." Zuko tried to make his voice as cold as possible.
"You may still be a prince but your children will never be in line for the throne. Do you understand?"
"Yes, Father."
"You will wait a suitable amount of time after our wedding ." He emphasized after. "There will be no mistaking the royal line and you will not receive any of the rites the crowned prince would normally at his wedding."
"Yes, Father."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ozai and Azula's wedding had been short and uneventful. Only the elite made an appearance to watch the ceremony as they were required. If the absence of the gentry made a statement of the general public disapproval it went unnoticed by the bride and groom.
It was a ridiculous spectacle. Azula wore all the traditional finery, which had been altered to fit her pregnancy. Zuko recognized the sage leading the ceremony as one of the fallen tower inhabitants. As bent as he was even he would not make eye contact with the couple.
Zuko stood distastefully at his father's side through the vows as he was ordered to do. Azula shot sneering looks his way but he did not return them. Mai stood on Azula's side, preoccupied by a spec of floating dust that had irritated her.
His stony expression faltered when they sealed their union with a kiss and it occurred to him that they really were mad. They really thought what they were doing was right and that they would rule the world.
The reception was held in the front foray of the castle. Gifts piled up though few actually attended.
"Enjoying the festivities, brother?" Azula sipped from a cup and set it in the air as if there were a table to set it on. Her personal assistant caught it before it hit the floor and dashed off for a new one.
"Of course, step-mother."
Azula glared at him and stuck a bony manicured finger in his face.
"This is only temporary. You'd better watch your step Zuko. It won't be long before I have my bending back." Sharply she turned and left, but he could see how much she was riled.
"Nicely done." Mai appeared by his side scowling and turning her back on him.
"It will probably cost me. You got my summons?"
"I did, and I turned it down." She crossed her arms and stuck her nose in the air. Zuko suppressed a smile.
"You'll receive my ultimatum before nightfall."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I'm getting married."
"How does it feel?"
"I'm terrified."
"That's about right," Iroh chuckled. "I wish I could be there to see it. How did the wedding go?" His voice wavered like he might be sick.
"It was awful, but no fights broke out. Most of the guests were soldiers. Azula said she was going to get her bending back. What do you think she means?"
"Hmmm. Does she know where Katara is?"
"Even if she did, Katara would be with the Avatar by now. They can fly anywhere they want on that Bison. I don't think she'll catch Katara, but there's something off about Azula. She's always been so direct but at the ceremony she was a little loopy."
"Maybe she was drunk?"
Zuko shrugged. It was possible, but it didn't make him feel any better. He wished he knew what she was planning.
"Something just isn't right with them. Something that started 100 years ago with Sozin." Iroh said gravely.
"I wanted Father's approval so much. I wasted three years running after nothing. I was so grateful to be welcomed home. Now I just hope I'm nothing like him."
"You are nothing like your father."
"What about my temper," Zuko lowered his voice, afraid of his uncle's answer, but Iroh chuckled.
"You never had the chance to see your mother's temper. You are just as passionate and focused as she was."

Ep. 5 - The Bridal Bed
Their room had been decorated with white and red flowers and ribbons. Oils and fruits were placed on tables next to the bed, which had new linens and lace tied around the tall posts. Furniture specifically for Mai's use had also been added.
To emphasize the unimportance of their wedding Ozai had denied Zuko his rites as crowned prince and instead of placing them in their own suite they would share Zuko's childhood suite.
"Do you like it, Prince Zuko?" A tending girl knelt in the corner with a bowl of water, flower petals floating on top.
"It's beautiful," he said uncertainly. "Why did you…"
"We have hope, Your Highness," she said looking around as if she might be overheard.
The doors opened and Mai entered gracefully, appearing every inch a princess. Another serving girl followed, carrying her trailing robes. Her expression was a mixture of emotion, something she'd kept well-hidden during the ceremony. She motioned for the girls to go.
"Would you like us to remove your robes, Princess?"
Mai stared at the tending girl as if she'd hallucinated, but recovered quickly and nodded, her golden flamed crown glinting in the firelight. The girls rose, gently untied the ribbons down the front of the gown, then together they lifted the robes from her shoulders. Underneath she wore the odalisque, an intense surprise. The girls kept their heads bowed, their eyes to the floor as they left the room.
"Why are you wearing that?" Zuko asked softly. His eyes were golden liquid and Mai shivered. There had not been a single moment during this day that she had felt in control and under Zuko's gaze, standing there as his wife, she felt more vulnerable than she ever had.
"I thought it might bring back memories," she said, holding her head high.
"It does." His voice was low and she tried to hold back a shiver. He unclasped the buckles to his own regalia and removed it. "But it's very unlike you."
Mai touched his shoulder and let her hand fall over his bare chest and drew a breath to steady herself.
She'd made a point to not want things her whole life but tonight she wanted to be what he needed. She wanted him to love her.
"I want you to make love to me like you would Katara," she said.
Zuko put his hand over hers and pressed it to his chest. "I don't think that's a good idea," he said. "You wouldn't like it."
"How would you know? How would I even know?" She welcomed the anger. It made her feel more comfortable.
He squeezed her hand, then jerked her forward, spun her around and crushed her to him. Mai could see her own shock in the mirror above the vanity. He busted the gold chain on her right shoulder, let the red fabric fall, and twisted her nipple.
"Ow!" she screamed and elbowed him as hard as she could.
"That's how I know," he said in tight voice, rubbing his chest, wondering if she'd broken a rib or just bruised it.
"You wouldn't have done that to her." Mai glared at him.
"Yes I would, and she would love it."
Horrified, Mai felt her cheeks burn. Zuko reached for her, but she pulled away feeling rejected.
"Mai, I know what you really want." He held his hand out to her.
"How would you know what I want?"
"Let me show you."
She hesitated, but put her hand in his and he pulled her to the bed. He busted the other chain and discarded the flimsy top before gently pushing her down onto the bed. He climbed above her, kissing her chin, her throat. His knee pressed against her thigh, pushing her legs apart.
Mai closed her eyes and felt her pulse in her eye lids. Large hands roamed over her body, covered her breasts. She suddenly felt trapped, cornered. The last bit of cover was removed and weight pressed against her pelvis. She held her breath knowing what would come next.
The impregnable weight held her down and she felt the imposing presence of an enormous erection against her. She clenched her teeth in preparation of the pain she knew would come.
"Mai, open your eyes," Zuko whispered in her ear, but she couldn't do it. Her eyelids were too heavy, her panic too oppressive. "Open them," he demanded and forced her chin up.
Slowly she opened her eyes and found Zuko above her. It was only Zuko, and he was barely touching her. She was naked beneath him, but he was still wearing pants. It had all been in her mind. She let out a breath and felt the blood leave her face as she resumed breathing.
"You don't have to be Katara, Mai. She's not better than you. She's just different." He kissed her throat, then the spot behind her ear. "I'll never be able to explain why the three of us feels more complete than any two of us, but you know it as well as I do."
He kissed her and she relaxed, letting her eyes drift close.
"Keep them open," he ordered. He pushed her arms above her head and wrapped her hands around the ornate decorative wooden bars of the headboard. "Watch me, and don't let go."
He kissed his way to her breast and gently pulled a nipple between his lips, flicking his tongue over the sensitive tip. His knee applied pressure between her legs and she felt her muscles there contract, causing heat and pleasure. How did he know how to do that?
She let a hand fall to his head and he placed it back on the bar. "Don't let go or I'll tie it there," he threatened.
He took his time, running his warm hands over her skin until she was quivering. Zuko kissed his way down her taught body, spreading her legs farther apart and covering her flesh with his hot mouth. She wanted to let go of the bars, push her fingers into his hair and hold him there, but she didn't dare.
His eyes flicked to hers to make sure she was still watching. She thought any minute he would let up and come to her, but he pressed on.
Just as she was about to climax he stopped, running his fingers over her bare engorged lips and pushing them inside her. Then he pinched her clit between his fingers until she made a noise. With her pleasure center clamped between his fingers he covered it with his mouth and sucked. Mai's release was violent and hard.
She heard her own voice saying his name, but felt like it was coming from somewhere else. She clung to the bars and tried to pull away, the pleasure too intense. She felt tears streaming down her cheeks, but he held her hips to the bed and continued through her protests until every last tremor had been wrung out of her.
Mai lay limp, catching her breath until she realized he wasn't done. Zuko finished removing his pants, and his hard body covered hers, but this time she wasn't afraid. This time she couldn't wait to have him inside her. On his knees between her legs he pulled her hips towards him, lifting them to meet his need.
She'd seen him do this to Katara the first time the three of them were together, but instead of ruthlessly plunging in he gently eased himself into her already swollen and sensitive canal.
Mai could already feel her next orgasm building, her muscles contracting around him as he held her in place and rocked into her steadily. His liquid gold eyes burned into her until she cried out his name. Zuko cursed and came with her, deep inside her.
Out of breath he relaxed his weight next to her and pushed his face into her hair to breathe in her scent.
"Was that what you were looking for?" he asked as he lay next to her.
Again he had shared control with her, demanded things of her but met her demands. To her horror she felt tears build behind her eyes.
"Yeah," she admitted trying to hide her face. "It was exactly what I was looking for."
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Katara, are you all right?" Sokka knelt beside her behind a boulder.
"I think so," she answered, then wretched again.
"Is she hurt?" Aang hurried to them and made a face when he saw the vomit.
"I'm not sure," said Sokka.
"No, I’m fine," Katara insisted. "I feel fine now."
"Are you sure that guy didn't do something to you with his brain ray?" Sokka helped her sit. An imposing character with a metal arm and leg had attacked them while they were sleeping. He had a tattoo of an eye on his forehead and he was able to direct sharp fire attacks from it. Aang had distracted him so they could make their escape on Appa.
"It was probably the fish we ate last night." Katara waved the issue away.
"Are you sure you're okay? You're sweating."
"I’m fine," she ground out. "We were just attacked by a crazy metal man that shoots fire from his forehead and you're worried because I broke a sweat?"
"Okay, okay. I was just making sure." Aang shrugged.

Ep. 6 - Azula's Rage
Did you look up your great-great-grandfather like I asked?"
"Yes, but I don't understand. Sozin died just like I thought he did."
"Sozin was not your only great-great-grandfather.
"What do you mean?"
"Your mother's great-grandfather was Avatar Roku."
Iroh told him about a deep friendship between young Sozin and Roku, each going their separate ways as Sozin took the throne and Roku prepared to be the Avatar. Their friendship continued, but when Sozin began forming ideas of spreading peace throughout the rest of the world by proclaiming war, Roku put his foot down and the friendship waned.
Sozin never stopped thinking about his plans, his thoughts festering past old age.
Zuko listened in awe, making connections between his great-great grandfather and his father. "The madness runs in the family," he said almost to himself.
"Don't forget that Ozai and I have the same parents. You are mostly your mother's son, a descendant of the Avatar. I'm glad she's not here to witness this."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Are there bathrooms in the Spirit World?" Katara asked. They all stood around Aang, watching him comically pantomime whatever he was doing in the Spirit World.
Roku took Aang into the distant past when Roku himself was a young boy whose best friend was then the crowned prince of the Fire Nation. As he watched the gut wrenching story of the two friends unravel, it left Aang feeling like he had already made too many mistakes.
A volcano erupted on the island Roku lived on, and even as Sozin flew on a dragon to help the Avatar protect his home it occurred to him that this might be his chance to be rid of this main obstacle, and when that chance arose he took it.
After Roku's death he set his sights on the Airbenders, the nomads who would give birth to the next Avatar.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"You focus all of your energy into the fire instead of into its purpose," Azula said, interrupting his concentration.
Zuko let the fire die and relaxed his stance as Azula came into their mother's court yard.
"Why would you help me?" His fists clenched and his jaw twitched.
She didn't answer and kept her tone light. It was as if she were being careful not to anger him.
She motioned him to the lawn and took on an earth bender stance. Zuko stared, momentarily surprised to see Azula using other disciplines. After deciding it couldn't do any harm, he mimicked her.
"Azulon knew that learning all four fighting styles would make him a better bender. Fire burns at different degrees. The yellow of a candle flame." She moved closer than necessary, invading his personal space. "The orange of a torch. The red of a raging fire."
She stood in front of him and if she'd been able to bend an orange ball of fire would have appeared between her hands. Zuko did the same and his fire ball roared to life.
"Focus on it and try to feel the intensity. Use your stance to keep you grounded. Are you able to control each flame? Can you tell each where to go?"
Zuko closed his eyes and took a deep breath.
"Yes," he said after a while. "I can."
"Good. Now imagine it's barely warm," she said and then whispered, "Open your eyes."
The ball hadn't changed size or shape, but now it was barely there, just a flash of yellow flame here and there.
"Now it's hot. Hotter."
Zuko was able to bring it to red, but he was already sweating.
"Focus. Burn it hotter."
"How?"
"Visualize drawing the energy from the ground up through your feet, through your body, and to your hands. Your hands are so hot, they're cold. Frozen until you can no longer feel them." Azula talked him through it for what seemed like hours. The sun was setting.
"Focus, Zuko," she ordered. "Feel the cold on the bottoms of your feet. Feel it stretch up through your blood, up your legs, through your stomach, and out through your hands."
Blue fire was a state of mind, not a physical motion. The ball finally showed the first licks of blue. He relaxed and the ball roared to blue before cascading into white. He stared at it and Azula let him enjoy his victory. He snuffed it out and brought it back. He did it one handed. Then he threw a punch and a white fire ball erupted and evaporated.
He turned to face his sister. "Why did you help me?"
For a moment her eyes were soft and she was looking through him, past him. He thought she was regretting her position, regretting her marriage. Zuko felt hope.
"Did you know Avatar Roku was Mother's great-grandfather?"
Her eyes hardened and the Azula he knew surfaced, killing his hope. "When the Avatar pops up on the Day of Black Sun, I'll be sure to address him as such before Ozai annihilates him."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Azula swiped her arm over the table set before her, knocking bowls of food to the floor. Several servants on standby rushed in to clean the mess and she screamed. They flattened to the floor, waiting for her wrath. She ignored them.
The lesson with Zuko was still fresh in her mind and she still didn't know why she had shown him anything, except that he reminded her of their mother. She had felt like she couldn't get away from Ursa since the wedding. Even when she looked in the mirror all she saw was their mother, and she had been about to tell Zuko how to channel lightening before he mentioned her.
On the other side of the table sat Lunar. Luna. L-something. What did it matter? He sat there, his eyes caked with blood, his arms still bleeding from the tightness of the ropes, and not a flicker of interest on his face. He was obviously water tribe, but swore he wasn't a bender. Not even days of starvation had been enough to make him take back his lie.
"Why won't you answer me!" She screamed and flipped the table over.
"Your highness," the soldier guarding him looked at his feet as he answered. "He's dead."
Azula let her rage pass through her stomach and the guard fell over himself to get out her way. She thrust her arms forward, but nothing happened. Instead she took the torch from the wall and burned the lying water bender along with the chair he sat in.
