Chapter 11: Who Says You Can’t Go Home Again?
Two weeks had passed. Two weeks since Aang had begun his firebending lessons. Two weeks since Sokka, Toph, and Suki had made up their differences, and during that time things in camp had, for the most part, been going rather well. The unorthodox relationship between Suki, Toph, and Sokka was keeping the three of them happy. This in turn made the others happy because they weren’t being dragged into anyone’s relationship problems, and no one had to sit around enduring awkward silences during meals.
Aang’s firebending lessons were progressing at a rate that shocked his teacher. During those two weeks they had trained nearly all day every day, and it was paying off. The Avatar had mastered all of the basic firebending techniques, and Iroh was actually running short on things to teach him. Somehow learning three other elements seemed to have prepared him to master the fourth quite readily, or maybe it had been the near death experience or the fact that his inevitable battle with the Fire Lord was looming ever closer. Whatever it was, Aang had progressed to the point that Iroh was now trying to teach him to create lightning.
Of course the Earth King still couldn’t be consoled. It had progressed to the point that he never even left his tent, and at times it seemed like the others had largely forgotten that he was even there. The only real unpleasantness was with Katara. When she’d mentioned not feeling well, she’d apparently meant it. Most of her days were spent resting in her tent. Aang tried his best to help her before leaving each morning, but she was often too sick to even eat. Though when he returned in the evenings, she usually felt better and for the most part their nights were as passionate as ever.
The gang tried everything they could think of, but nothing seemed to help, and sadly, “waterbender heal thyself” proved to be a faulty adage. It was the unusual progression of the illness that had everyone the most confused. Despite being a waterbending master, Katara knew little about the day-to-day lives of those like her. They’d never really had any in their village at the South Pole, and they hadn’t been around the ones at the North Pole for very long, but she decided that maybe her illness was following a common course. She felt at her worst when the sun began to rise and at her best when the moon was out. None of the others could think of a better explanation for the strangeness of her symptoms. Unfortunately that didn’t help them make her better. All they could do was try to make her comfortable and hope it got better on its own. It didn’t seem to be getting worse, which they chose to take as a good sign.
The absence of warm flesh pressing against him was enough to wake Aang up before the first of the morning’s rays even made an impression on the sleeping airbender. He could hear Katara moving outside. “Katara,” he called to her in a quiet voice, “how are you feeling?”
His question was answered with the sounds of vomiting and a low tortured moan. Aang had loved Katara from the first moment he saw her, and it pained him that he couldn’t do anything for her now. It was so bad that she couldn’t keep any food down except at dinner, and most of that came back up as soon as she was awake the following day.
Aang slipped on some clothes and followed his love outside. There she was, bent over the stone basin that Aang had created for exactly this purpose. Katara had taken the time to throw on a robe and tie it loosely around her waist before running outside to begin another day of suffering. Despite himself, Aang couldn’t help but be distracted by her beauty for a moment. She was barefoot, and her long, dark, muscular legs disappeared at the thigh into her blue robe, but the morning wind managed to give him a brief glimpse of her perfect butt. Her hair was down and disheveled, as if she’d just rolled out of bed, which made perfect sense because she had, in fact, just rolled out of bed. Everything about her was beautiful to him.
Aang approached and sat down beside her. She didn’t look at him, too preoccupied with whether or not she was about to throw up again. Some of her dark brown hair was hanging down into her face, and Aang reached down to pull it back, in case she was going to be sick some more. With his left hand he held her hair up and out of harm’s way. His right arm went around her back, and he held her gently, putting his head on her shoulder. “It’s going to be ok, Katara.”
“That’s easy for you to say.” She coughed. Katara seemed to decide, for the moment at least, that she was done, and she sat up and put her head on Aang’s chest as he wrapped his arm around her more tightly.
“You’ll get better, Katara. I promise.” Aang didn’t know how he was going to keep that promise, but he was determined that one way or another, it would happen.
“That’s sweet, Aang, really, but we both know that you’ve all done everything you can, and if I have to have one more of General Iroh’s ‘healing’ teas, I think I’ll be sick … well, sicker.” She laughed weakly at her own joke.
“There’s got to be something else we can try.” Aang said, wracking his brain for something that they hadn’t already thought of.
“What we need is someone who knows about waterbenders.” She was convinced that whatever was affecting her was some sort of waterbender-specific malady. Unfortunately, their camp was near the southern edge of the Earth Kingdom, and a trip to the North Pole was rather out of the question at the moment. There just wasn’t time.
Then, like a bolt of lightning, inspiration struck Aang. “Katara! When did the last waterbenders, other than you, leave the South Pole?”
Katara was a bit taken aback by the question. She looked into Aang with her deep blue eyes, an ocean trapped within each one. He seemed excited, like he had locked in on something that might really help. If she hadn’t been feeling so terrible the excitement might have been contagious. “From what Gran Gran said, the Fire Nation took the last of them 30 years ago, maybe more.”
“But your grandmother was around then, right?”
“Yeah, I guess.”
“And we found out she was originally from the Northern Water Tribe, didn’t we?”
“Yes.”
“Then maybe she knows something about this. Maybe she can tell us how to make you better. The South Pole isn’t that far.”
Katara thought about that for a moment. “Well,” she said slowly, “Gran did always know just the right thing to make me feel better when I was a little girl.” His excitement was actually managing to make its way past her urge to vomit again, but just as suddenly it was gone. “Wait a second, Aang. We can’t go to the South Pole now.”
“Why not?”
“You’re still learning firebending. You can’t just put that on hold, the eclipse is in two weeks. We’re about to begin an invasion of the Fire Nation. We can’t stop everything because I’m not feeling good. Besides, it’s not even that serious. I feel fine at night. It’s not like I’m gonna die.”
“We don’t know how serious it is, Katara. We can’t just keep sitting around, hoping you’ll start feeling better.”
“Aang, think about your training and the invasion plan.”
“I can keep training at the South Pole just as easily as here. As for the invasion, you’re an important part of it, Katara. If you’re too sick to fight, it will affect everyone. Besides, none of that stuff matters to me as much as you do. I won’t risk losing you, Katara. A world without you wouldn’t be worth saving.”
Tears welled up in the waterbender’s eyes, the ocean making its way out, and she hugged her love tightly. The next moment, though, she pushed him back and turned just in time to send more of the previous night’s dinner into the stone basin.
“Ok,” she said when she was done. Whether it had been Aang’s arguments or the most recent rush of nausea that finally convinced her, she was convinced “Let’s do it. It’ll be nice to see Gran Gran again.”
As soon as everyone was awake and gathered in the center of camp for breakfast, Aang and Katara announced their decision. The whole group was silent for a moment. No one knew quite what to say. Then everyone started to talk at once. Then everybody stopped to let everyone else go first, and there was another long, silent moment.
Finally Sokka spoke up. “We should start getting packed immediately. The sooner we get there the better.” Iroh, Toph, and Suki all nodded in agreement, and just like that everyone was off getting ready. While Toph began to break down the tents, Sokka started bundling up their gear, and Suki went to give the Earth King the news.
Aang looked at Katara. “Well, that wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be. I wish you’d been that easy to convince.” Katara smiled a bit, though she was obviously still feeling terrible.
“I can’t believe that they didn’t even question it. They just … agreed.”
Then a voice came from behind her. “Katara, these people care about you very much. You should not forget that your friends here would do anything for you.” Iroh hadn’t moved from the rock he’d been sitting on during the announcement, but as he spoke now, he got up and approached the two lovers.
His gaze focused on Katara as he approached, and she looked back at him, but when he stopped walking he turned to Aang. “I have very little left to teach you, young Avatar. And at least some of that can be practiced on our journey. You have mastered more in the past two weeks than most in the Fire Nation can learn in a lifetime. I have faith that with all of us working together, we can restore balance to the world.” He left his words hanging for several seconds as the other two considered what he was saying. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I should pack my things. I would prefer it if we could stop somewhere on the way to the South Pole. If I remember correctly, plants for making tea are hard to come by there.”
“He’s got a point, Aang.” Katara said after the General had walked off.
“About the tea?”
“Well, he’s right about us not having any there, but what I meant was that we need to make a stop somewhere. Sokka and I have our coats from home, and you never seem to get cold, but Suki, Toph, Iroh, and the Earth King will all need something to wear so they don’t freeze.”
For the first time Aang realized just how big their little party had grown. “We’ll find some place.” He told her. They could look at Sokka’s maps and find some small, out of the way town somewhere in the south of the Earth Kingdom where they could buy some cold weather gear. He thought it was probably a good idea for them not to go anywhere that they might be recognized by people they knew. So while Kyoshi Island, Chintown, or Gaoling might be tempting places to stop off, they couldn’t risk the Fire Nation getting wind of where they were and especially not where they were going. Aang had brought the Fire Nation to Sokka and Katara’s home once before. He wouldn’t let it happen again. “I just hope Appa can carry us all without getting too tired.”
In the end, Appa made noises of protestation about this, the largest group he’d had to ferry around yet, and his back was rather cramped for the passengers (Bosco seemed to find it especially unpleasant), but they made it into the sky alright.
It was a two-day trip to the South Pole, with a quick stop at a lonely little fishing village on the coast where many of them purchased something new to wear. As the air got colder Sokka and Katara pulled out their familiar old clothes. It generated a surprising nostalgia, because it seemed like a lifetime since they’d worn them. Iroh and the Earth King put on the heavy cloaks they’d picked out. Both were a dark crimson, with a hood that could come down over the wearer’s face and a heavy cape that blocked the biting wind.
Toph wrapped herself in a heavy jacket of Earth Kingdom green. It covered her from neck to toe and was frilled with some kind of fur, which the person selling it had assured her would keep her just as warm as it had the animal to whom it had once been attached. She’d also purchased an insulated pair of gloves, made from walrus-seal skin. She’d never experienced snow before, but she knew about ice, and she knew that she wasn’t a big fan. So she wasn’t going to take any chances. Suki’s coat was similar but not nearly as thick. She was used to cold winters; in fact she rather enjoyed them. Aang assured everyone that he was fine with what he was wearing, and Bosco didn’t seem to notice any difference at all.
They sighted the village at the South Pole at the end of their second day of flying. The sun was just dipping beneath the horizon, and the orange light glinted off the small circle of houses constructed from snow and ice. This meant that the South Pole would soon be settling in for a long, dark night. Aang brought the sky bison down with a soft crunching sound, as his six huge legs made impressions in the snow. The entire party began to slide down one by one.
This was the part that Toph had been dreading. She had tough feet, a reward for a lifetime of walking barefoot whenever possible. What she didn’t want were frozen feet. Katara had warned her that, when the time came, she might not be able to go barefoot in the snow. One step into the ankle-deep sea of endless cold told Toph that her waterbending friend had been right. Of course, with the layer of permafrost coating the earth beneath them, Toph’s earthbending sight could perceive practically nothing anyway. She slipped on the heavy snow boots that she’d bought on Katara’s advice, and she lamented the difference between practically nothing and absolutely nothing. Though she was accustomed to using her hearing as well as her bending, she now felt completely blind. A hand reached out to help her, and to her moderate surprise, it wasn’t Sokka’s but Suki’s.
Katara, Sokka, and Aang led the way, confidently striding across the snow toward the small village. The others followed a few feet behind, unsure of exactly what to expect. What they found was absolutely nothing.
As the troupe came through the small break in the snow wall surrounding the huddle of houses, they saw no signs of any people whatsoever. “Hello?” Aang called out. “Is anyone here?”
Sokka’s heart began to race as he considered for the first time that something might have happened in their absence. He’d left his village without a single warrior to defend them in case of attack, or at least without a single warrior who didn’t need a potty break every few minutes. “Gran Gran!” He called out, desperation in his voice. “Where are you?”
“It’s Sokka!” The voice was that of a young boy. It seemed to come from nowhere at all, but it filled Sokka with hope nonetheless. As he looked around, trying to locate its source, he quickly began to spot eyes looking back at him from the buildings. Then all at once the center of the village began to fill with familiar faces, calling out his name, Katara’s, even Aang’s.
There were hugs and happy words bandied back and forth for several minutes between the crowd and the three returnees. The rest of the Avatar’s party stood back and watched.
“We were hiding!” One of the children exclaimed to Sokka as he hugged Katara.
“Hiding?”
“Yes, it was young Rona’s idea.” The wizened old voice split the crowd that had gathered around. “We’ve built hidden rooms into all of the houses, in case the Fire Nation ever decides to pay us a visit again.” An old woman strode slowly through the break in the small sea of people.
“GRAN!” Sokka and Katara both exclaimed. The two prodigal children of the Southern Water Tribe ran and embraced her.
“It pleases my heart to see you again, my brave warrior.” She hugged Sokka tightly, “and my little waterbender.” And she hugged Katara even more tightly. “You as well, young Avatar.” Aang smiled one of his over-the-top Avatar smiles and waved.
Then she saw the others, grouped together off to the side, unnoticed or ignored by the people of the village who had flocked to their long-lost friends. “Who else have you brought with you, my children?”
The three of them looked back at the others, as if they too had forgotten them in all of the activity of the moment. Sokka quickly led his grandmother over to his friends to begin the introductions.
“This is Toph.” He said, taking the earthbender’s hand and pulling her forward. “She’s Aang’s earthbending teacher. Also, she’s blind.” By way of demonstration he waved his hand in front of her face several times.
Eventually Toph reached up and managed to catch his arm. She grabbed it hard, and yanked it away from her face. “I think she gets the idea.”
Gran Gran laughed a bit. “It’s nice to meet you, Toph.” The earthbender made a slight bow and then stepped aside.
“And this is Suki.” Sokka said, pulling her forward now. “She’s a warrior from Kyoshi Island.”
“Hello.” Suki said with a smile. “Sokka has told me so much about you.”
“I hate to think what my grandson has said, but it is nice to meet you as well, Suki.”
After a small, respectful bow of her own, Suki stepped to the side and took Toph’s hand again. Katara took over the introductions from here. “Gran,” she said, “this is the Earth King.” The king threw back his hood in a dramatic fashion, as if he expected to make a rather large impression with the revelation of his identity. It failed.
Gran seemed decidedly unimpressed. “Is he?” She said simply. “It’s a pleasure, your majesty.” She bowed slightly, out of deference to his apparent stature, but she seemed to place as much value on his sovereignty as if she’d just been told that he was king of a nearby snowdrift. The king pulled his hood back over his head, somewhat disheartened by the reception.
“And that’s his bear, Bosco.” Bosco was distracted by an incredibly discovery he’d just made, snow. He seemed fascinated by it, and everyone else was contented to leave him to it.
Before she could introduce the final member of the party, he decided to introduce himself. “Katara,” Iroh said, sloshing his way past her, “you must have been mistaken. This beautiful young woman could not possibly be your grandmother.” He took her gloved hand and kissed it. “It is an honor, Miss …”
“You may call me Kana.” She blushed in a way that was strangely reminiscent of her granddaughter.
“Gran,” Sokka said quietly, but not so quietly that everyone couldn’t hear, “he’s a firebender.”
Gran Gran’s demeanor cooled a bit, but not entirely. “Well, he’s got good manners for all that.”
“This is General Iroh.” Katara reported. “He’s teaching Aang firebending.”
“Not something your people would approve of, I think, General.”
“No, I suppose not.”
Gran smiled again. “You can’t always let the rules of your people dictate your actions. I know that better than most.” Sixty years earlier Kana had left the Northern Water Tribe rather than be married to a man she didn’t love.
“I think that you have much to tell me, my children.” To his surprise she seemed to be including Aang in that statement, along with Katara and Sokka. “And perhaps something that you want me to tell you.” She knew her grandchildren well, and she could see that there was a reason for their return.
The whole village gathered to listen as the story of the Avatar’s journey unfolded. They tried to touch on only the major events, though they made an exception for things like their first meeting with Suki. There were questions constantly, some people even working up the courage to ask Iroh about his part in events.
When they talked about arriving at the North Pole and learning waterbending, Kana startled at the mention of Pakku. She exchanged looks with her granddaughter. Much passed between them in that moment. The conclusion was that they both knew, and they would discuss it later.
They related the events from the North Pole, the attack by the fire navy and their defeat at the hands of the Avatar, the death of the moon spirit, and her rebirth from the noble self-sacrifice of the beautiful princess. Telling the story, it seemed so much like a fairy tale. Katara found herself only half-believing some of it, despite having seen it all with her own eyes.
They talked about meeting Toph and convincing her to teach Aang earthbending. Then Sokka told the story (exaggerated slightly but not by much) of their trip into the ancient library and their discovery regarding the Day of Black Sun. The children gasped and cheered as he described his daring battle with Wan Shei Tong, the giant owl, spirit of knowledge.
Finally they talked about their most recent adventures, Ba Sing Se, Azula’s coup. It generated a lot of sympathy for the deposed monarch who now sat with them. They talked about their exciting escape, Aang’s wounding, and their rescue of General Iroh accompanied by a second death-defying escape. The recitation took hours. It was accompanied by Sokka’s embellishments and answering a lot of questions from the audience.
They did not, however, talk about the reason for their return to the South Pole. Kana understood what that meant. While Aang began to waterbend ice huts for the new arrivals, the rest of the village prepared to turn in for the night, and Kana took her granddaughter aside.
“You have been through much, my precious waterbender, and there is much ahead of you still. Tell me why you have returned.”
“Gran, I’m sick.” Her grandmother’s eyes immediately filled with concern. “I think it must be a waterbender illness. We thought you might know something that could help.” She began describing her symptoms to her grandmother, making sure to stress the strangeness of an illness which got better as the day wore on but was back again the following morning.
Kana’s face went through many expressions and emotions as Katara described what she had been going through. By the time she’d finished, it had settled into a very serious look.
She sighed and thought for a moment about what to say. “I know what’s wrong, Katara. This has always been particularly problematic in our family.”
“’Our family?’ So it’s not some kind of waterbender sickness?”
“No, my darling, Katara. It is not. Though I do regret that it has affected you so young.”
“What is it Gran? Can you cure it?”
“I can give you something to make you feel a little bit better. It will make the symptoms more bearable, but the only cure is time.”
“Time? How much time?”
“Well, fortunately, it only tends to last for a few weeks. That’s something to be said for our family, I suppose. It’s bad, but it doesn’t last too long. You should feel better in another week or two. To be completely cured, though, will take longer. I’d say about 8 or 9 more months.”
“I don’t understand, Gran. What’s wrong with me?”
“There’s nothing wrong, Katara. I just never thought it would happen so soon.”
“Never thought what would happen? What is it?”
“Katara, you’re pregnant.”
The revelation floored the girl. “Pregnant? Gran, I can’t be.”
“Have you had sex?”
Katara’s face turned redder than ever before. That was all the answer her grandmother needed. “Then you can be, and you are.” Katara seemed to be having trouble with the concept. She opened her mouth as if to say something, to argue that Kana had to be wrong, but nothing came out. “Don’t worry, Katara. Everything will be alright. I just hope the boy you’ve met is a nice one, and that you love him.”
Katara instinctively turned to look at Aang who was still bending their houses for the night from the ice and snow. She was going to have to tell him, but how? “The Avatar?” Kana asked, only a little surprised by the discovery.
Several things came to Kana’s mind to say to her granddaughter at this point, but she pushed them all aside. “Do you love each other?”
Katara smiled, still looking at him. “We do.”
“Then that is all that matters.”
The waterbender turned back to her grandmother. “But how did being pregnant make me so sick?”
“There is a new life growing inside of you, Katara.” Kana touched the girl’s stomach lightly. “It takes some time for your body to get used to the new order of things. For women in our family it has always been especially unpleasant. My mother, my sisters, and I all went through this same thing. Fortunately for him, your father managed to avoid that.” She seemed almost bitter about it. “I knew that one day it would probably happen to you as well. Come with me, I have some special medicine that you can take every morning to make things easier.”
Katara let Gran Gran lead the way to her hut. It was one of the largest out of respect for the village elder. “Oh, Katara, there is something else that I wanted to ask you. Your friends, Suki and Toph, I see the way that they hold hands, and how Suki assists Toph with such kindness and care to help her get around while she’s here and can’t see the way she normally does, are they …” the awkward pause finished the question for her.
“Actually,” Katara wasn’t sure how to broach the subject of if it was even her place to be the one to do it, but she couldn’t avoid the question, “they’re sort of Sokka’s girlfriends.”
“Both of them?” Katara nodded. “My goodness, you children leave for a little while, and now it seems I hardly know you anymore. Come along, my little waterbender, and we’ll do something about your day-sickness.”
“I think it’s got whale blood in it.” Katara said looking into the bottle that her grandmother had given her and giving it a sniff. Her lip curled in disgust. It was going to taste horrible. Gran Gran had told her that much, but she’d also told her that it would help, and Gran Gran was usually right about that sort of thing.
“And this is going to make you better?” Aang asked. They were inside the igloo that he’d constructed for the two of them. He’d done it out of habit. They’d been sharing a bed every night for weeks now.
Before their arrival Katara had worried that things might get a little awkward for their relationship once she was back home, but now Gran knew and had given her approval. So she didn’t feel at all strange about their sleeping arrangements, and now that he was going to be the father of her child … Well, she hadn’t told him about that just yet. He was just a kid, they both were really, despite the fact that by this time Aang had to be over 113 years old, but since their journey began they’d both matured a lot. They’d had to, and with a baby on the horizon, they’d be maturing a lot more very quickly.
“She said that it wouldn’t be as bad if I drank this every morning, and she told me that I would start feeling better in a week or so.”
“That’s great!” Aang embraced her, happy that his plan had worked and that coming to the South Pole had gotten Katara the help that she needed.
Katara let him hug her for a bit, happy for the excuse to put off what she had to say for a few more seconds, but the hug couldn’t last forever. “Aang, there’s something we need to talk about.”
He pulled back from her, still smiling. “Sure, Katara, what is it?”
“Gran Gran told me why I’ve been feeling this way.”
“Was it a waterbender sickness like you thought?”
“No, Aang, it wasn’t. It’s more of a … family condition.”
“Well, what does it matter if you’ll be cured in a week?”
“I’ll be feeling better in a week. I won’t be ‘cured’ for a while longer.”
“How long?”
“8 or 9 months.” She hoped that the time frame would get the message across, but she very much doubted it. Before meeting Katara Aang hadn’t had much experience with girls. The air nomads raised their men and women separately.
“I don’t understand.”
She decided that a different strategy was called for, maybe one that was a little more direct. “Aang, you know this thing that we’ve been doing since you woke up, making love, you’ve enjoyed that, right?”
“Of course.”
“Did you know that it’s also how people make babies?”
Aang thought for a second. “The monks said something about that.” He recalled. “It was one of the reasons they were going to send me to the Eastern Air Temple, to learn about how children were made from the women at the temple.”
Katara didn’t want to think about the ramifications of that statement, but it had been 100 years ago, and he’d run away before being sent East. The main thing was that her message didn’t seem to be getting through. She decided to be even more direct. “Well, I’d say that we both learned an awful lot about it, Aang. … We made one.”
“Where?!” He looked around all over, as if he expected their child to pop out from its hiding spot somewhere in the igloo.
“It’s in here, Aang.” She said, pressing her hands to her abdomen. Then she explained how it worked to the surprised Avatar. Some of the details of the process she’d only learned that night from her grandmother, but she laid it all out for Aang, who knew even less about it than she had.
“So my stuff made a baby inside of you?” Aang was amazed. He’d never really considered that what they were doing might have any effect other than making them both feel really good.
“Yup.” She was still waiting for his reaction when he finally realized the ramifications of what she was saying.
“I’m going to be a dad?” There it was, the realization hitting him. In airbender society, the children were separated shortly after birth, the boys sent to the northern or southern air temples and the girls remaining at the eastern or western temples where all the children were born. Aang knew well that this wasn’t an option anymore, but he quickly realized that he wouldn’t have wanted it that way anyway. He loved Katara, and he found himself getting excited about the idea of the two of them settling down and having a family together. “I’m going to be a dad.” He said again. Then he looked at Katara, “and you’re going to be a mom.” She nodded hopefully. “This is great!” He said.
Katara felt like a huge burden had been lifted from her shoulders. She had been dreading that Aang might react badly. He’d not known that what they were doing could make him a father, and she was afraid that he might not feel ready for it, that he might not want it. Seeing his joy at the idea took all of her worries away. They were going to have a child that they could raise together. They were going to be a family.
Aang hugged her again. He was ecstatic. “We’re going to have a baby! I wonder if it’s going to be a boy or a girl. Oh! I wonder if it’s going to be an airbender or a waterbender!”
Katara smiled. His excitement was contagious. Since she’d found out she’d done nothing but worry. Now that she didn’t have to do that any more, she found herself getting excited as well. “You’re the Avatar. It could be an earthbender or a firebender.”
“You’re right! … I think. … Actually, I don’t really know how that works.”
“Neither do I, but we can find out together.”
“I love you so much, Katara.” Then the two of them kissed for a long moment, a deep, passionate kiss, and for that moment there were only the two of them in the whole world, actually, the three of them.
When it ended, Aang had something on his mind, something that had just occurred to them during their kiss. “Katara, do you think it’s still ok for us to … you know, if you’ve got a baby in there.”
She thought about it for a moment, the thought hadn’t crossed her mind. “I don’t see why not. I mean, it’s been there for at least a couple of weeks, probably longer, Gran Gran said. And we’ve been doing it that whole time.”
“Every night.” Aang grinned.
“Sometimes more than that.” She grinned back.
“Then I think we need to celebrate this news.”
“Definitely.” They kissed again.
Their tongues collided, moving back and forth, conducting a symphony of the hearts. With a little eager help from her partner, Katara managed to remove her heavy coat. Aang had never really noticed how much more clothing Katara had worn during their early travels between the north and south poles. It only occurred to him now because stripping her naked had become almost second nature. He rather enjoyed it, but as he surveyed the landscape this time, he realized that it was going to be a bit more challenging today.
Aside from the jacket that lay on the ground and the robe that she always wore, there were two additional layers. Once Aang had unwrapped her robe, and let it fall from her shoulders he encountered a puffy white shirt. It threw him just a bit, and he was forced to reach around, trying to figure out how to pull it off. Katara laughed a little at his vexation, and once that had joined the pile of clothing on the floor, a form-fitting full-body undergarment, presumably designed to keep body heat in, although it was equally effective at keeping aroused airbenders out.
Aang struggled with that for a moment, until she finally took pity on him and began to slip out of it herself. As she peeled the garment back, Aang got a breathtaking view as first her sensual shoulders, then her firm, beautiful breasts, all the way down to her hairless mound and long, shapely legs were slowly revealed.
By the time she was done, Aang could barely restrain himself as he cast his clothing aside and practically jumped her. They started kissing again as they fell onto the thick, padded sleeping bundles that had, in their tenure, serves as a barrier between the gang and any number of ground conditions, from snow to rock to every thing in between, as they slept (or engaged in other activities which required bedding but didn’t necessarily involve sleep).
They rolled around a bit, kissing and touching until Aang, now on top again, began to make his way down her body. He played with her breasts, rubbing them gently. “Wow, these are really hard today,” Aang noted, running his fingers over her dark nipples.
Katara blushed slightly. “Well, it’s really cold out.”
“That’s what makes them do that?” Aang was getting quite the lesson in the workings of the human body. “Let’s see if I can warm them up some.” He immediately took one nipple into his mouth. Meanwhile his hand found the other breast and began to slowly, gently massage it.
“Ooo,” Katara cooed. “I don’t know how much that’s going to change, but it feels really nice.”
Thusly encouraged, Aang continued his work for some time before switching, taking the other nipple into his mouth and using his other hand to massage the warm saliva that he’d left behind into the opposite one.
Finally the Avatar seemed to feel that he’d accomplished all he could with her ample bust (and was it his imagination or were they getting bigger?), and he continued to make his way down her soft, warm skin.
Katara shivered for a moment at the sensation as Aang abandoned her breasts to the cold, and now they were moist which just made the cold linger. She knew, though, given where her lover was headed, that before long she’d have forgotten all about the cold. While Iroh had been training him in firebending, Aang and Katara had been undergoing their own training, though mostly through trial-and-error, and Aang had taken the task of giving her pleasure just as seriously as he had learning the four elements.
He began using his fingers, running them over her warm, moist slit, playfully. Letting one of them sink in a bit now and then. That was followed not long after by his tongue, running along the entire length of her lower lips lightly, teasingly, just to get her warmed up a bit before he began his work in earnest.
Katara was considerably hot already. Somehow Aang’s response to the disclosure she’d made had been an incredible turn on. He really wanted to be with her, to raise a child together. She’d wanted to jump on top of him right then and there. So rather than let the whole thing be one-sided, Aang was so generous in bed that he sometimes forgot that Katara liked giving too, she pushed him slightly with her leg, indicating that they should try something a bit different.
Aang knew what she intended, and in a few quick motions he’d repositioned himself so that, while his head was still between her legs, his erect cock was hanging right in Katara’s face. Katara had described this to him, in detail, from having seen Sokka and Toph do it that first night. Aang had initially thought it a bit odd that Katara got so turned on recounting her brother’s sexual escapades, but her arousal always meant good things for Aang. So he didn’t question it.
Katara planted a kiss on the head of his member, and quickly began to tease it with her tongue, licking it lightly, or running her tongue around the underside. Then she took the whole thing in her mouth for just a moment before releasing it again. The cold air inside their little igloo made Aang shudder as his moistened manhood was exposed to it. Katara smiled. Now he knew how she felt. Lesson taught, she reached out with her hand and her tongue to continue teasing him, stroking him lightly, playfully rubbing his testes, sending a deliberate message that as soon as he really got down to business, so would she.
Message received, Aang sped things up, working with his fingers, his tongue, even his nose (an awkward experience given his position) to seriously start getting Katara off.
When she felt him redoubling his efforts, Katara went to work as well, taking him into her mouth as far as she could manage and using her hands to attend to the rest. Since that first night, when she’d done this as Aang slept, she’d taken him into her mouth at least a dozen, more times, and each time she was determined to swallow every drop of cum that he had to offer. Each time she’d ended up with something of a mess that she used her bending to clean up, much to the now-conscious Avatar’s delight.
She considered this as she sucked on the organ in her mouth. If she was going to stand any chance of getting it all, not to mention surviving the initial onslaught, this wasn’t the position she needed to be in, with him shooting his stuff straight down her throat. With a few gentle, at times awkward motions, she managed to get the two of them rolled over, with only minimal effort lost toward their mutual goals. Now she was on top, and had a bit more freedom of movement while Aang continued tonguing the crotch the hung in his face.
Katara began bobbing her head up and down, while one of her hands stroked the remainder of Aang’s member and the other supported her. She found it much easier to get into a rhythm in this position, and before long she was plugging away happily, ready for Aang’s climax and the flood of semen that would follow.
Katara came first. Her body convulsed. Her eyes closed. Her mouth opened in a soundless scream, though one would have been hard-pressed to tell, since it still had a large piece of Aang half inside of it. She grunted softly and dug her pelvis into his face as waves of pleasure ripped through her.
Aang continued with his work, like nothing had happened, and after the intensity of her orgasm had passed, Katara renewed her efforts as well. A few moments later, her efforts were about to reach fruition. “Katara, I’m almost there.”
She took his warning seriously, and prepared to try, once again, to get it all down. She clamped her lips down on his shaft, getting as much of it inside of her mouth as she could. Then she accelerated the movement of her hand. Her lover grunted, and she felt the first blast of cum fly down her throat. Then there was another, and suddenly giving in to an instinct she had yet to be able to overcome, Katara gagged and pulled back. She barely got her mouth clear before the next jet flew through the air and landed on her cheek, half in her hair. The fountain was already dying down, and two more weak streams came out and dribbled onto Aang’s stomach.
Katara climbed off of him and prepared to clean up the mess. Aang sat up eagerly to watch. He loved this part. She began to bend the cum from her face and from Aang. It floated lazily through the air. He watched as it coalesced into a ball, and then slowly disappeared between her lips.
“You are so hot when you do that.”
Katara giggled and kissed him again. “Ready for more?”
“After watching you do that, I’m ready for anything.” He displayed his still-erect member.
She grinned. “Good, because ‘anything’ is just what I had in mind.” She laid back on the bedding, put her hands on her thighs, and spread her legs wide, displaying her love tunnel prominently. “Give me ‘anything.’” She smiled.
Aang didn’t need to be told twice. He moved into position, lining his cock up just right, and then he pushed slowly into her. Aang knew, from experience, that Katara liked it best when they started off slowly and worked their way up. When Aang had gone as far as he was able he began to pull out again, just as slowly, and Katara savored every sensation.
The process repeated over and over, both of them more than content to take all the time they needed. Slowly, gradually, the pace increased, and as he increased the rate of his thrusting, Katara increased the frequency of her responses. She purred and moaned, and each time she made some pleasing noise, it made Aang smile because he knew he was doing his job right.
They’d tried many different positions, and this was the one Katara liked best. It was almost the compete opposite of their first time, when Aang had been unconscious and Katara had done all the work, and maybe that was why she liked it. Though there had been a time or two when they’d decided to relive that first wonderful night. Aang would pretend to be unconscious, and the love of his life would ride him for all she was worth, and although he was supposed to be faking a complete loss of consciousness, Aang couldn’t resist the site of his waterbending beauty sitting on top of him, breasts bouncing hypnotically, eyes closed, a look of intense pleasure on her face.
They’d even tried putting his cock in her ass once, after their ménage-a-trios with the Blind Bandit. Katara had been completely unable to relax, and hadn’t enjoyed the experience at all. So they never revisited the idea, content with their rather more mundane, yet incredibly fulfilling sex life.
Aang had gotten up a good head of steam, and was pounding into Katara pretty rapidly now. She was quickly coming up on her climax as she rutted back into him with each thrust, one of her hands fingering her clit and the other one cupping one of her breasts.
She came, wracked with inaudible cries of pleasure, but Aang wasn’t finished. He continued right through her first climax and into a second one before he too came, shooting his load deep inside of her already fertilized belly.
He collapsed next to her, both of them tired from the physical and emotion exertion that the day had brought with it. Aang wrapped his arms around his love, and she pulled the bedding up around them so that the two lovers were cocooned inside of the warm furs, protected from the cold outside as they fell asleep in each other’s arms.
Meanwhile, not far away the other three teenage members of their party were having their own fun.
Toph sat on the furs, completely nude and waiting for whatever it was the others had planned.
“So you can’t see anything at all?” She heard Suki’s voice ask.
“No.” She wasn’t happy about it, but that’s just the way things had turned out. She didn’t much care for the South Pole. It was cold and she was blind. There was nothing to like.
“Then I’ve got a game we can play.” Suki’s voice announced.
Toph wasn’t at all sure she liked the idea of a game that they could only play because she was blind, but over the last couple of weeks she’d learned to trust both of them, and she’d grown to care a lot for Suki. So she was willing to go along, for the moment, at least.
Suki seemed to take her lack of objection as approval, and expanded on her idea. “Sokka and I will each touch you. If you can figure out who it is, we each have to make you cum once for each right answer. But for each wrong answer, you have to make each of us cum once. Does that sound like fun to everyone?”
“Definitely.” Sokka’s voice replied.
Toph had to admit that it did sound like a lot of fun, no matter who won. So she agreed as well.
“Ok.” Suki’s voice said. “Let’s get started. Whose tongue is this?”
Toph felt a tongue flick over one of her nipples. The suddenness of it took her completely by surprise. Usually she could sense everything that was happening around her. Now there was nothing. So the tongue caught her completely off-guard, which was very unnerving for her. It flicked over her nipple again. It was a tongue. It felt like any tongue she’d ever experienced, and she would have been hard-pressed to put a name to the sensation. She did, however, have a 50/50 chance.
“It was Sokka.” Toph guessed.
“Afraid not.” Suki’s voice said. Then Toph felt a pair of lips clamp onto her breast and a tongue lashed at her nipple several times.
“That’s one for us.” Sokka’s voice said happily.
“Yes it is.” Suki’s voice agreed. “Now, Toph, tell us whose fingers these are.”
Toph anticipated another assault on her breasts, and she was ready for it. So she was once again caught off-guard when she felt fingertips rub against her exposed pussy lips. Her first reaction was to snap her legs shut, but there were suddenly a pair of hands holding them in place. Judging from the angle and feel of the hands, each of them had a hold of one leg, which meant the hand in between her legs could still be either of them. The fingertips ran gingerly along her privates, never giving her enough information to pick out which one of them was doing it, not to mention that the sensation they were creating as a bit distracting. Then she thought she felt Suki’s hand, the one holding her leg, move awkwardly, as if she were moving to maintain the position of her other hand.
“It’s Suki.” She guessed instantly.
“Nope!” Sokka’s voice declared triumphantly, and with that he jammed his fingers into her pussy, and played with her for a bit. Toph was rather starting to enjoy losing this game.
“Ok.” Suki’s voice said when Sokka’s fingers were done. “Last chance. Tell us whose cock this is.”
“What?” Toph began to ask, but before she could even finish the word, there was a cockhead pushing at her lips. She took it into her mouth, and sucked on it, thoughtfully, as if trying to decide which one of them it might belong to. She tentatively fondled the attached scrotum, seemingly looking for any signs that might indicate the owner. Finally, she pulled off of it. “It’s a hard one.” She said in a contemplative way. “Maybe if I could ‘examine’ it a little more.” She laid back and spread her legs apart.
“I don’t see why not.” Suki’s voice said from somewhere off to the side.
Toph felt a large male organ at the entrance to her love tunnel, and a moment later it was through. The phallus penetrated her to her deepest depth very quickly and then began pulling back out.
“Figured it out yet?” Suki’s voice asked.
“I’m still not quite sure. Maybe if whoever it was tried that a few more times, and a little bit harder.”
The warm log of male flesh was shoved into her again and again. Before long her unnamed assailant was fucking into her with reckless abandon, thrusting faster and harder with each stroke, pressing her back into the bedding and the hard snow beneath until finally he came, shooting his load deep into her small body.
“Well,” she said. “I guess that’s one that I still owe Sokka, and one that each of you owes me. So keep at it, Ponytail. I’m nearly there.”
“Let’s not forget about me.” Suki’s voice said.
“Never.” Toph replied, feigning indignance. “Why don’t you take a seat, and I can get to work.”
Suki plopped down on Toph’s face, and the earthbender did indeed go to work, tonguing the other girl’s quim furiously. At some point Toph came, and she screamed her orgasm into Suki’s cunt, which sent the other girl over the edge as well.
After their climaxes had subsided, Suki climbed off of Toph, and the earthbender pulled herself off of Sokka’s member.
“That’s three down, and three to go.” Suki’s voice said.
“I think I know how to kill three birds with one stone.” Toph said. She reached out to find Suki’s hand, which she did. “Lie down here.” She told her. Suki did as she was bade, and Toph quickly mounted her, so that their positions of moments earlier were reversed. “I think you know what to do.” She told the warrior girl, and without any further encouragement, Suki threw herself wholeheartedly into her task.
“As for you, Snoozles,” Toph said, “there’s another hole back there that has your name all over it.”
Sokka didn’t say a word, but she felt a pair of hands grab hold of her hips, and suddenly there was a visitor knocking at her back door. Then he was in, and Toph cried out. “Oh, yes, Sokka!” It felt incredible as always.
Now it was her turn, but instead of simply eating Suki to another orgasm, she had a more interesting plan. She reached out, found the edge of the bedding and slipped her hand under it. There was snow packed thickly on the cold ground beneath them, but through it she could just sense something else. Frozen earth. Perfect.
It took some concentration, which she found to be in short supply considering the tongue exploring one of her holes and the cock plowing into the other, but in a few moments she had a perfectly formed phallic object, made of freezing cold earth. This she took and slipped, unceremoniously into Suki’s dripping orifice.
The female warrior cried out in surprise and alarm at the unexpected intruder, but Toph ground her hips into Suki’s face and sent the other girl back to work without an explanation.
She began pumping her cold artificial member in and out of Suki, trying to emulate the strokes that Sokka was making. Before long the three of them had gotten into a rhythm, and they kept it up for quite some time.
Sokka came first, grunting as he shot his load deep into Toph’s tight ass. This in concert with Suki’s ministrations sent Toph over the edge. She jammed the stone member, now not nearly as cold because of the body heat it had absorbed from being buried inside of Suki, as far as it would go as she loudly screamed out her climax, which sent Suki over the edge as well.
The three of them came at essentially the same time, and then they fell to the ground, half on top of each other, all trying hard to catch their breathes. When they were all finally breathing normally again and the afterglow of their mutual orgasms had begun to fade somewhat, Toph spoke. “Well, that was fun. You guys want to play again?”
“Definitely” They both responded.
Katara’s movement woke Aang. It was morning, he realized, which meant that Katara would be feeling terrible once again. His eyes opened slowly, as he tried to clear the sleep. She was standing there, still naked, seemingly unsure of what to do next.
“Katara?” He asked. “Are you feeling sick?”
“I drank some of that stuff that Gran Gran gave me.”
“And?”
“It tasted horrible.”
Aang let the irrelevant comment pass. “How do you feel?”
Katara thought about it for a minute. “Pretty good, actually.”
“Then it worked?”
“I guess so.” Katara looked around. “But I am really cold. Where did my clothes end up?”
“I think I know how to warm you up.” Aang said, climbing out from under the bedding and taking his love by the shoulders.
“I don’t think we have time for that, Aang.”
“Just wait a second.” He said. “I want to try this.” Aang kept his hands where they were, but slowly Katara felt the heat from his body expanding outward from where he touched her. Then he moved his hands, across her shoulders and down to cover her breasts. Everywhere they went they exuded a warmth that seemed to spread through the surrounding areas of her body. His hands moved over her stomach and down between her thighs.
“I think I’m pretty warm there already.” She said playfully.
“Well, it never hurts to make sure.” He responded.
“How are you doing that?”
“Firebending.”
“Well,” she said with a smile. “I guess there are benefits to firebending after all.”
“Definitely.” He replied, kissing her on the neck. Warmth spread from his lips as well. Her whole body had warmed up, and the cold air, surrounding every inch of her naked skin, hardly seemed to touch her anymore. “Now what was that that you were saying we didn’t have time for?” Aang asked, kissing her again.
Katara sighed. “I’d love to, Aang, but I want to tell the others out news. Knowing Gran Gran she’s already told the entire village about it. I don’t want them hearing it from someone else.”
Aang continued kissing her neck and shoulder and letting his hands roam her body. “We both know they were probably busy way after we both fell asleep, Katara. They won’t be up for a while.”
Katara bit her lip slightly. “Well, I guess it has been a while since we’ve had fun in the morning.” One of his hands was caressing her breast now while the other was rubbing gently, absently, between her legs. Katara gave in, “Ok, but just once.” Aang rolled her nipple playfully between his fingers. “Maybe twice.” And the two of them fell to the ground again.
