Day 2
I cannot believe she would continue to betray her brother even after he saved her from their father, if that is what he did. She cannot be trusted everyone can see that now. Zuko can see that now.
The only thing she said in her defense angered me but I can understand her reasoning. She said she wanted to live. She said she knew that if the Avatar came to the palace he would ask for her death and she knew to please the people that Zuko would grant his request immediately. She did what she had to do even if it meant deceiving him. She said that she wanted to prove to him that she could be worthy of his trust if he gave her that chance. It was a risk she willing to take to earn just a sprinkle of his kindness and glance of his smile.
The emperor was not impressed. His grip on her neck increased before he released her and Azula fell to the floor coughing and holding her throat. He made her an outcast, stripped her of her power, and placed her in prison. She said nothing throughout the tirade from her angry brother but I could see the fear in her eyes. The ice queen was afraid because she knew the next step was death.
Katara stopped writing for a moment as the moonlight poured into her room and lit the flowers the emperor had given her after dinner. Katara closed her eyes as a strange tingling entered her body as she recalled the trip with him. Her body shivered in the warmth of the room and her arms circled her trembling frame. After a while, her arms returned to her lap and her gaze to the parchment before her.
What was I thinking to go with him? I do not understand my want or desire to be around him. I do not wish to live here and produce babies for him. I am more than that. I am worthy of more than just a concubine.
Although it is alluring the way, he tries to convince me that I would be perfect for him I think otherwise. He seems to forget that we were enemies before. I admit I have a hard time letting such things go but that is my defense against betrayal by those you know.
Why pick me? He says I have all the qualities of a good mother. He says I am beautiful but I am sure he has said that to countless number of women.
A soft knock on her door brought the water bender from her musings. An envelope bearing the emperor’s seal slid under her door and soft footsteps retreated down hall.

Ghee stared at Xin fu sitting in her room reading some of her notes. What could he possibly want with her? What did he have against her? She knew a visit from Xin fu meant trouble. Ghee weighed her chances of getting out of the room without damage and thought against running. The empress advisor set down the papers and stared at the traitor in amazement
“I am quite surprised that you have managed to stay hidden for so long. You have expertly choreographed the rebels from inside the emperor’s palace for four months. It is a feat that few would attempt but you have no fear.”
Ghee frowned at the man sitting before her. “I do all things for my sister. I only help them because they do not like the empress.”
Xin fu smiled. “They do not like order or laws and I know you do this for yourself your sister is just a convenient muse. What have they offered you for your help against the emperor?”
He watched the dark haired woman lose her frown and stare at him with fear. “Why should I tell you?”
Xin fu stood and approached her. “I can kill you now or in your sleep which would you prefer. Have they promised you wealth or power because they have neither? They have lied to you and set you on a path to dismemberment. The emperor will know and you will die.”
The small hands of the woman gripped onto Xin’s robes as she fell to her knees. “Please I will help you if you do not let me die. I have to help my sister because she suspects me and I do not trust her to keep quiet. I will do anything.”
Ghee fell back onto the floor as the advisor pushed her away. “How did this partnership come about?”
“They took me from the town below when I went to buy some herbs and forced me to help them.”
“That makes little sense to me. Why would they want your help what have you been doing before they captured you.”
Ghee looked away from the towering man. She felt his foot kick her thigh with impatience. A sound of pain tore from her lips and her stare returned to Xin fu.
“I stole some of the empress’s jewelry. One of their scouts living in the palace saw me and threatened to tell if I did not help them draw the design of the palace. He was limited to a certain area while I could go anywhere. They began to pay me quite well so I continued. I did not know they would hurt people.”
“You only care about your well being. In your mind, money outweighs someone’s life. You think your sister has a chance with the emperor. He has already chosen his bride.”
Ghee sat up and stared up at the frowning man. “I see the way you look at her and I know the emperor has seen it also. You are in as much danger as I am. He has an unfair advantage over you. He is the one in power and you are not and she does not like you.”
Xin made a fist at Ghee and her hands went up in defense. “I can occupy the emperor’s time and you can have her.”
“What can you do that I cannot?”
Ghee lowered her hands. “You let me use my connections with the rebels and I will give the water bender to you.”
Xin stared down at the smiling face with disgust. She was much prettier when she was not smiling. He knew she would fail but he would have time with Katara and that was all he needed to woo her to his bed. He would of course expose Ghee if the situation benefited him or if things started to go wrong quicker than he imagined.
The frown disappeared from Xin’s face and he smiled down at the woman, offered her his hand, and pulled her to her feet.
“Your secret is safe with me Ghee; please continue with your efforts to help the rebels defeat the emperor.”
Ghee shook her head.”I do not betray the emperor.”
“You do betray the emperor. You have heard the news about the Azula haven’t you? She is imprisoned and awaiting her death for betraying her brother. Treason is not tolerated remember that as you plan your attacks.” A chuckle escaped the advisor as he walked by the stunned woman.
“I am doing this for your benefit why would you say that to me. I think you will not keep your word.”
Xin turned to face the woman. “I will keep my word Ghee I am trustworthy now continue with your work.”
She watched him walk from her room with a sinking feeling in her body. He would betray her she was sure of it. Ghee glared at the swaying robes until he turned the corner and vanished from her sight. If the water bender and Xin fu died, she would have no further problems then she could expose the group to the emperor and receive her just reward. Kwan would be empress and her future secured.
Ghee ran and closed her door and returned to her scattered papers. One important piece was missing; the emperors quarters. It took most of her money to bribe a guard to draw them and now it was gone. Ghee took the rest of the papers and put them away. She would begin the task of retrieving it tomorrow.

She stood trembling as the women stripped her of the jewelry she wore in honor of the station she no longer held. Her clothing now boasted drab and dingy grays. The vibrant fabric would only be a memory for her. The long black hair fell among her shoulders now free from the crown she once wore. The emotion she found so easy to keep in check threatened to explode within her. She held on until the women left her small house, her prison.
Azula crumpled to the floor shaking with pent up sorrow and rage. Sobs of confusion escaped her as the key turned in the lock outside her door. Her brother rejected her words that she wanted to live. She wanted to show him that she could change. Aang expected her to die and she knew Zuko would agree with him. She had to stop their meeting and taking the letters was the only way she could delay that until she gained her brother’s favor.
Her family never loved her they only used her. Zuko was her only chance at redemption and now he pushed her away. This was the last step towards execution. She would stay here at his whim until a date of her death appealed to him.
Azula frantically wiped away her tears as the key in the lock turned. She stood from the floor and kept her back towards the visitor to her cell.
The door closed and the person behind her remained silent as she was.
“What news do you have for me?”
“I am to inform you that you will take your meals on the northern side of the palace away from the sun. You will have two guards Heo and me. You will not look at, speak to, or walk in the same space as the emperor.”
Azula bristled at the sound of Sokka’s voice. “Having you say this to me must give you unspeakable joy.”
There was silence from the man that a few hours ago she wanted to bed. She still wanted him even now but she forced those feelings away.
Sokka watched her body tremble even as her voice tried to sound defiant. “Do you understand this decree?”
Azula closed her eyes as she answered. “I understand your words.”
She expected a hasty departure but he did not leave. Azula slightly turned to look at him. “You can leave me now at least I can have privacy in my cell without permission.”
“Why did you do this? You were doing good deeds since your father’s death.”
Azula faced her former protector and stared up at his annoyed expression. “I could do those things because I took the letters. It was borrowed time but I made the most of it. I showed my brother and everyone else that I could change. It does not matter he never intended on giving me a chance. My evil was just too great.”
If he had blinked, he would have never seen the moisture running down her cheeks as she spoke. He was not sure if she knew she was crying. He was not sure if she ever cried before. It was awkward and compelling to him.
“Do not cry.” He moved closer to her but the former princess moved away and angrily wiped her tears and then screamed at him to leave.
Sokka stood there for a moment watching the usually composed royal breaking down before him. She screamed at him again then walked out of the front room slamming the door to her bedroom behind her.

The moonlight lit her way to the imperial garden and the emperor. He still wore the black clothing but his hair was loose on the wind. He smelled of power and the muscular frame told that to be truth. Katara tried to calm the rising emotions running through her body as she approached him.
She wished he would stop staring at her. She was sure the moonlight made her nightdress almost invisible and she began to wonder why she did not put on her robe. His gaze moved up and down as she stood before him in the massive garden.
A surprised gasp escaped her when he pulled her into his overheating body for a much-longed kiss. Her traitorous hands tangled in his hair and her body began to conform to his causing him to deepen the kiss and force her against a tree.
Zuko pulled his lips away from hers but still held her pinned to the tree with his body. “I have sent word to the others that they are not needed. I will only keep three of you.”
Katara focused on his face with a dazed expression. “Three of us,”
“I must keep the people with their fantasies about my choice of bride. I will spend time with each you. The first two days with Kwan the next two with Suki and the rest of my life with you.”
Katara wore a puzzled expression and had a hard time controlling her breathing. “Why do you say things like that? It makes it hard to hate you.”
The emperor wore a crooked smile as he slowly moved his lips towards hers again. “I only speak the truth.”
Xin fu watched them from the far side of the courtyard locked in the lovers embrace. The water maiden for all her displays of displeasure for being here melted in the emperor’s arms as he kissed her. Zuko could have her now and no one would check to see if she were still a virgin. He held that kind of power. Zuko was toying with the others he knew the moment Katara stepped from the ship how often he would thrust between her warm thighs and into heaven. Xin fu turned away from the scene before him hearing the soft moan from the water maiden as the emperor’s hands skimmed down her shapely form.
Ghee’s plan to distract him would not work Xin fu saw the look in the emperor’s eye. The paper in his hand began to wrinkle under his tightening grip. He would have to use his newfound secret faster then he wanted to. He knew he did not have much time in service to the emperor with Azula imprisoned. Zuko would get rid of him at breakfast. Xin fu began to straighten the map and neatly fold it and place it in his robes. He hoped Ghee slept well tonight it would be her last night in the palace.
