Chapter 11: The Plot Thickens
Zim woke first the next morning, and he sat up, looking down at his slave sleeping next to him. What had the human done to him last night to make him so weak? Zim shuddered, scowling darkly. He stood and walked into his bathing room, cleaning himself roughly, wanting to rid himself of the human beast's dirty touches. When he finally decided that he was clean enough, he climbed out of the tub and dressed quickly in his uniform, walking out into the bedroom and retrieving his pak, putting it on carefully. His red eyes narrowed as he looked at the human again, and he marched over to the bed, grabbing Dib roughly by the collar and hauling him to his feet.
“Get up.” He growled, still dragging him along. “We have work to do, filth-beast.”
Dib shook his head, finally completely awake. “Zim, what…what the hell?! Let go!”
Zim whirled on him, grabbing him by the throat and slamming him against the wall, pinning Dib’s wrists with his sharp tentacles, feeling a little better when he saw the human flinch in pain, although Zim’s expression was still one of hatred. “You are NOT to address me by my name. You are a SLAVE, and will behave as such until I say otherwise.”
“But I thought—”
“You thought incorrectly, human.” Zim spat, his teeth clenched. “I have not forgotten the torment you have put me through. My hatred is one that runs deeper than you can imagine.” He released Dib’s wrists, then shoved him forward. “Now, MOVE. You are wasting my time.”
Dib stumbled, then walked towards Zim’s lab, wondering if perhaps he’d just dreamed last night’s events. But he couldn’t have…he had the bruises from Zim’s grip on his arm to prove it. He sighed, then shook his head, his expression set and determined. It didn’t matter. He wasn’t falling for Zim. It wasn’t possible. There was nothing between them now, and there never would be. This was a strategic alliance, not a bond of friendship.
When they entered the lab, Zim indicated the table. “Sit.”
Dib sat, cracking his back and neck, then rolling his shoulders. He waited for Zim to sit down, then quirked a brow. “So, did you find anything of interest?”
Zim flicked his antennae irritably. “Yes. This biological warfare… what is it?”
Dib grinned. “Biological warfare is when you use a virus or bacteria against your enemies. Basically, you manufacture a whole load of stuff that makes people sick, and you let it loose. That way, you don’t even have to bother fighting them…they all get sick and weak, and you stay strong. You can take advantage of the human susceptibility to disease.”
Zim considered this for a long time. “And where am I going to get this disease-stuff?”
Dib frowned a little. “That…well, that’s gonna be harder. Odds are good we’re either going to have to make it, or we’re going to have to break into a place where they’re researching it and steal it.”
Zim stood, then started to pace slowly. “My computer could manufacture it…but I would have to find enough human test subjects to determine its effectiveness.”
Dib rubbed the back of his neck, scratching at the skin just beneath the collar. He looked up at Zim for a moment, tapping a finger against the table. “You could use your ship.”
Zim stopped, blinking at him. “What do you mean?”
“You could use it like a crop duster, and just fly over a town. Let the stuff loose and see if it works.”
Zim’s eyes narrowed. “You’re actually going to help me do this?”
Dib nodded, no trace of a smile on his face.
Dib’s answer disturbed him, and Zim began to pace again. He didn’t believe the human at all…he knew that when it came down to the line, Dib was untrustworthy. There had to be some task, some act that he could ask of Dib that would prove loyalty beyond a shadow of a doubt. His eyes narrowed to dark slits as he paced, trying to come up with something he could use to catch Dib, to use as proof that the human’s proposal of alliance was a farce. So far, the slavery had not worked. Dib was a willing slave. What could he possibly tell Dib to do that would be impossible for him?
Zim stopped abruptly, a twisted grin creeping across his face. “Yes…that sounds promising…but there is something you must do first.”
Dib nodded, quirking a brow. “What is it?”
“Go and get your father, and bring him to me.”
