Egon’s plan was inspired. The wives were outfitted with Ghostbusters uniforms, charged to the U.S. Mint of course. They pulled their hair back into ponytails or upsweeps and wore the uniforms with the zipper pulled up nearly all the way to hide their cleavage. The finished product would have never fooled anyone of their time, but to a woman like Susan B. Anthony who had lived in a time when woman held few jobs and didn’t wear pants, the “maleness” of these Ghostbusters would not be questioned. Only Alice, now four months pregnant, had to have a uniform made in a larger size. And even she just looked like a slightly overweight person once she put it on.
Egon had insisted that the girls use exactly the same plan as before. That way, Susan would be lulled into a false sense of security. “And we will be right by your side,” he assured the women. “I’m quite sure we can blend into the crowd if we all wear disguises.
The next day, the women went to the mint in full Ghostbuster regalia. The men were also on hand. Jake took Tom’s place behind the camera while Peter pretended to be Jessica’s replacement. Ray and Eddie stood with the mint employees. Neil and Sharon played the role of a couple while Egon and Winston stood with the crowd of on-lookers. If something went down or the wives were hurt, they were ready, each with a gummer ball hidden on their person.
The night before, Jessica briefed Kayla on the use of a dematerializer, while Janine and Alice briefed Dana and Kel on the use of proton packs and traps. They were all a quick study. Now they stood in front of the mint, waiting for the ghost.
After a few minutes of waiting, they were finally greeted by the spirit. “I thought I told you not to involve yourselves in my affairs!”
“Yeah, well I guess we don’t listen too well,” Dana said, lowering her voice to sound more like a man. “We’re back, Sweet-pea. No one fucks with the Ghostbusters!”
The ghost frowned darkly. “Fine. If you wish to suffer like your predecessors, by all means, try to attack me.”
Kayla fired at her with the dematerializer. The ghost dodged a few blasts, but Kayla nailed her with four good shots. Alice, Dana and Kel immediately blasted her with their proton guns. Janine ran forward with the trap while Jessica prepared to throw gummer balls. Susan Anthony’s spirit screeched in frustration and fear. On Alice’s signal, she, Dana and Kel stealthily decreased the power of their proton beams. The ghost broke free and floated up and away from them. She then dove down at them and let out the same eerie cry as before, but nothing happened. She tried again, but all for naught. The women all pulled their hair down and opened their jumpsuits enough to show heather gray-clad cleavage. The ghost looked shocked and confused.
“We’re willing to talk if you are,” Janine shouted up at her.
The ghost nodded and descended reluctantly to join them. “I am listening.”
“Okay,” Alice said. “We would like to know why you are attacking the mint.”
“Because they have committed a terrible injustice against womankind in general and me personally! They wish to put two men on my coin! MY coin! The gall! Merriwether Lewis and William Clark couldn’t find their way across the boulevard without that young native girl! To think they’d replace my image with them! And the way the men in that mint treated their female colleague was disgusting. It was even worse than the way your men treated me!”
“Now hold on a moment,” Kel insisted. “Our husbands might have been a bit cheeky, but it wasn’t because you’re a woman. It was because you’re a ghost and you’ve been trying to hurt people.”
“I have hurt no one but them, and they earned it.” Smirkmirked. “Your husbands, you say? You should be thanking me, then. Surely, they must beat you from time to time. You cannot bring me to believe that you did not appreciate the retribution.”
The women all protested. “We do not get beaten!”
“She must be out of her fucking mind!”
“I wish he would raise a hand to me!”
“Not if he wants to keep breathing!”
Jessica put up a silencing hand to get the others under control. “No, Ms. Anthony. You’re wrong. They would never hit us, or any other woman for that matter. Things are different now. I’m not going to say that some men don’t still hit, but it’s socially unacceptable and punishable by law.”
Susan looked very surprised now. She narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “You lie. Women are nothing more than slaves and breeding animals to men. It has not been so long that such a drastic change would be possible.”
“No. Women have come very far in a short time. That’s largely due to the efforts of pioneering feminists such as yourself. We reap the rewards of your efforts, and we remember what you wthrothrough to get us here. We are all career women, and our husbands support us in everything we do. In fact, they helped us to learn their craft so we could battle you today. But at the same time, they are looking out for us.” Jessica pointed out at the crowd. Susan looked around and saw the guys coming towards them. Her eyes became wide and haunted. She looked like a cornered animal about to strike.
“No! It’s okay!” Kayla cried. “They aren’t here to hurt you! They just wanna talk!”
Susan’s spirit relaxed a bit. “Fine. Talk.”
“We’re very sorry for the anguish we caused you,” Egon said. “There’s no excuse for our behavior, but we hope you can forgive us.” He nudged Peter in the ribs.
“Uh . . . yeah. I think I owe you the biggest apology. I didn’t mean to offend you. We didn’t know who you were. It was the ladies that figured that out. Including Sharon.” Sharon waved at them from the front of the crowd of on-lookers.
Jake added, “We heard what you said about beating our wives. The very idea is sickening. We respect them too much to ever want to hurt them, and we’re smart enough to know better than to try. My wife, for one, is a third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do.” Susan looked puzzled by this statement. “Oh, uh. That’s one of thean man martial arts. You know, fighting. Let’s just say trying to hit her would only get my ass kicked.” Susan smiled and nodded in understanding.
Winston spoke next. “Our wives are all from different walks of life, too. They have all worked, some still do, and they didn’t always choose to take our last names. We’re fine with that. That’s the modern woman. We really don’t know any other way. There’s still a ways to go before society is truly equal, but we’re getting there. For gender and race.” Susan smiled at Winston and Kel. She’d been a supporter of equal rights for everyone.
“And as for the whole idea of marriage being only for procreation,” Janine added. “I am infertile, and I know that Egon would never leave me, even though he could have children of his own with another woman. We both want children really badly, but that doesn’t mean we can’t find happiness in just being together.”
Susan looked surprised, but she conceded that they must have been telling the truth. “Then I, too, must apologize for what I did to you. I misjudged your intent. I understand why you tried to stop my attack.” She smiled at them. “I wish that all men were more like you gentlemen.”
“So do we,” the wives all replied together, then laughed.
Eddie smiled and waved a dismissive hand at the ghost. “It’s fine, really Ms. Anthony.”
“Yeah,” Ray said. “Besides, we nearly trapped you. You were defending yourself. And the containment unit’s no place for an American hero like yourself.” Susan cringed again at the mention of what was almost her final resting place.
“Well, now that we’re all friends here, we need to come to some sort of agreement,” Peter interjected. “You just can’t continue frightening and hurting people. Can we do something to appease you so you can rest again?”
“I have a suggestion,” Sharon yelled from her place in the crowd. She ran over to join them. “What if we replace your image on the dollar with a woman? Someone who exhibited all the characteristics you believe in?”
The ghost pondered this for a moment. “That is certainly agreeable, but who do you have in mind?”
Janine ventured a proposal. “What about Sacagawea? She was a pioneer and it’s like you said, she was the true guide of the Lewis and Clark expedition. She was also the first woman in this country to vote legally and equally with a man.”
“Janine, that’s brilliant!” Egon said, beaming with pride at his wife. Susan looked at how he looked at her, then at how the men all looked at their wives. She shook her head, smiling sadly.
“I have made a significant error. I have been angry over the retirement of my coin because I saw it as the only proof that my efforts in life were recognized by modern society. But that’s not the real proof. The real proof is how men and women treat each other today, and how far women have come since my time. After centuries of oppression, we have jumped forward in leaps and strides in a matter of a few decades. That is all the validation I need for my life’s work. Thank you, Ghostbusters. I find your agreement to be acceptable, and I am now able to rest.”
And then she was gone. Peter turned to the crowd and mimicked the little psychic woman from Poltergeist. “This mint is clear.”
The crowd went up in shouts of joy. It was over at last.
