Chapter 103
When they arrived back at the South Pole, Hakoda was pleased to see how well the defenses had been fortified. True to his word, The Mechanist had dismantled the first ships they’d captured and used them to reinforce the snow barriers.
He had also created miniature tanks that could provide transport to the evacuation area. They ran on coal, but he was working on developing something that worked better with ice and water since their coal supply was limited. He was delighted when he saw the new materials Hakoda had brought him to work with. The last ship they’d captured was a barge carrying coal and supplies to Whale Tail Island.
The Mechanist grew especially excited when Hakoda pulled him, Teo, Taruk, and the most mischievous children from the village into a brainstorming session. He was living proof pranksters made good strategist and needed a something similar to the stink and sinks that wouldn’t detonate if they came into contact with aquatic life or icebergs. Teo suggested something magnetic to only attack the Fire Nation ships.
That night, there was a feast using the seafood they’d brought back with them. The marine life in warmer waters varied from that of the poles so it was the first time many of them including the adults tried them. When the food was consumed Hakoda announced it was time for another war meeting.
He introduced the male warriors from the North then reiterated everyone’s duties in the war effort to protect their village. He inspected samples of the children’s craftsmanship praising them on their progress. Once the children were dismissed he explained how his children were being taken on a tour of the Earth Kingdom to flush out Avatar supporters.
Hakoda bowed, “My people, thank you for supporting me. As you know family is everything to me. I am not sure where the Fire Lord is sending my children, but if it is to the colonies, I plan to narrow his options. When I leave home next time, I will begin attacking the colonies. Just as the Fire Nation has destroyed our homes and families; I will destroy theirs.
I will not ask you to fight, but I will ask that all of you accompany me to acquire what you will need to survive in the upcoming months. The Fire Lord will most like retaliate and I want to make sure you are prepared. We will be extending the barrier on the way out to stop them from getting in, but as you know, that will also stop you from getting out.”
He ended with, “Do any of you object any part of my proposal or have better ideas?”
Iluak raised her hand, “Is it possible to create a place here like the spirit oasis where things can be grown?”
Hakoda turned to The Mechanist, “If we bring back enough dirt can you find a way to heat the plants and illuminate them? The Waterbenders can desalinate the water, but we don’t get very much sun. Maybe you can find something useful on some of the ships we’re bringing back?”
The Mechanist hummed in thought, “That would be an interesting challenge. I’ll try it!”
“Iluak thank you for the idea. As you know, she had made several valuable contributions since her arrival. So have the other Waterbenders from our sister tribe. I would like to introduce five more I would like you to make welcome.”
The men from the North began yelling when they saw Sila and her companions. Gran-Gran had kept them hidden with the other women and they assumed they were being punished for their impudence.
“Sila, what are you doing here? I demand that you go home!” Senneyok yelled.
“Young man, you do realize that is impossible?” Hakoda asked good-naturedly.
“She is my fiancée. I forbid her from being here. Does your Father know where you are?” Senneyok demanded.
Sila smiled and showed her betrothal necklace. It was not the one he had carved. “I am not your fiancée. I do not like you. I have never liked you. I did not consent to marry you. I am marrying Pitilak. If you want to get married so badly, marry my father. He is the one who said yes.”
He lunged for her, but the men and women of the Southern Water Tribe got between them.
“Your name was Senneyok wasn’t it?” Hakoda growled. “I don’t know how things are done at the North Pole, but at the South Pole, we respect our women. We do not hit them unless we are sparring and preparing them for battle. I’m not sure about the marriage arrangement you have, but it looks like she prefers to be with him. Down here, a woman has to give her consent before she is married. It is not her father’s decision. These are our laws. If you ca not abide by them while you are here, I suggest you go back North otherwise you will be punished.
Hakoda turned to the other warriors. There were many young men in this group who were scowling, “That goes for all of you. You are in the Southern Water Tribe. Women are treated as equal citizens. There aren’t any arranged marriages. If you force yourself on a woman you will be castrated as punishment for rape.”
Hakoda addressed the men who had come down with earlier, “Is there anything else they need to know? We will be leaving for the Fire Nation colonies day after tomorrow. I do not want ignorance of our laws and culture to cause any misunderstandings.”
Sangok spoke up, “These women are violent and scary. Some of them are even manlier than Katara. They carry weapons and know how to use them. Treat them like you would another man.”
Several men laughed. One spoke up, “Like I’m going to bow to a herd of koaloatters.” He was unable to dodge all of the boomerangs thrown at him.
“Are the rest of you as stupid as your friend?” Gran-Gran asked reaching up to catch her boomerang. It had hit him in the mouth; exactly where she aimed.
They looked at their fallen comrade and shook their heads. Even the old ladies were ferocious.
Two days later most of the Southern Water Tribe was on the move. Hakoda and the warriors were in Fire Nation ships while the women and children followed them in Water Tribe boats. Hakoda meant what he said about eradicating the colony.
The first place the warriors went was the military base. They killed all the soldiers and secured the messenger hawks then freed a group of captured Earthbenders. Hakoda explained to them he was taking the colony. He asked them to try not to destroy any buildings before letting them join the fight. He wanted to give Ozai something to worry about and was afraid the Fire Lord would retaliate against the wrong opponent if there were visible signs of Earthbending.
They were happy to assist. They flung rocks at the colonist when they ran from their homes. They caged the private messenger hawks and pets they released. The battle did not last as long as Hakoda expected it would. All of the Water Tribe warriors and Earthbenders participated in killing the men, but only a few helped to eliminate the women and children.
He ended up killing most of the children himself.
When there were no longer any colonists Hakoda asked the Earthbenders dig a large trench outside the village for the bodies. They were dumped in but not buried. The scent would be used as bait to attract the Fire Nation reinforcements.
During the two days they waited the houses and fortress were gutted. Everything inside them was packed up and carried to the waiting ships. The city was silent when the new troops arrived by Komodo rhino. They came from the direction of the forest so Hakoda had to rework his plan. Instead of ambushing when they reached the mass grave they would ambush in the town.
The battle was swift and fierce. The Earthbenders opened the earth, swallowing fire soldiers up to their necks and breaking their limbs. The Waterbenders pulled water from the harbor to the drown those stuck in the ground. The other Water Tribe warriors stabbed, hacked, and killed. Thirty minutes later none of the Fire Nation soldiers remained. They too were dumped in the mass grave.
This time Hakoda allowed the Earthbenders to cover it.
These soldiers weren’t carrying anything useful although a few bore pieces of paper entitling the bearer to a gold coin with proper identification courtesy of Prince Zuko and Lady Katara of the Fire Nation. He let the Earthbenders keep the vouchers as well as the Komodo rhinos for helping him take the houses, gardens, and fortress itself to the ships.
By the time he was finished only the fenceless gates to the fortress was left. Hakoda had painted the word Wendigo in blood on both sides of them.
“What does that mean?” One of the Earthbenders who identified himself as The Gopher asked.
Hakoda lips curled back ferally, “It means there is a demon seeking the Avatar and his companions.”
The Earthbenders scattered after leaving the village. Each one telling a variation of what they’d witnessed to everyone they came across. Soon there were rumors that Chief Hakoda singlehandledly destroyed a Fire Nation colony. Those were slightly less popular and less accurate than the rumor the Avatar’s capture had unleashed a demon.
