Owen glances at her as they stop at a light. “You have been quiet the whole way home. Is everything ok?”
“Yeah.” She stares out the window, watching the tall buildings go by. “Just still thinking about a dream I had last night.”
“About?” His brows furrow, opening his side of the bond enough that he can feel her mulling over something.
She sighs, opening enough for him to see it through her mind’s eye. His whole body stills, only focused enough to drive safely. When she feels him start to pull away, she reaches out and touches his arm. “It felt so real. I just don’t know what to think of it.”
“The song is real.” He murmurs softly. “I can hear it.”
“Me too.” She turns in her seat, watching him closely. “So what if I just met my babies? Can that happen?”
“I don’t know.” He pulls into Xanatos towers, eyes scanning the parking garage. “But I will ask around and see if I can find out.”
“Ok.” She smiles, relaxing back into the seat.
Eve walks into the bedroom, noticing a doorway where one wasn’t before near the bed. Frowning, she walks around the bed and opens the door. She blinks in surprise, stepping into the nursery. Fox turns as she hears the door open, grinning.“So what do you think?” She waves around the room. “Xander worked on it all morning. He’s anxious to have everything ready for his cousins.”
Eve survey’s the room, noticing the built in shelves and floor space for two children to grow. “Not bad. Should work for the first few years.” She taps a finger at her lips. “But it needs a coat of paint and some carpeting.”
“So what color are we painting?” Fox claps her hands together in excitement.
“I don’t know yet.” Eve laughs, shaking her head at her friend. “We didn’t hear the sex yet.” She walks over and lays a hand on one of the shelves. “I thought maybe something neutral or a couple of complementary colors.”
“Talk with Owen on a few colors and we can get some swatches done.” Fox hands her a color palate and some baby furniture catalogs. “When you are ready, let me know which of those you like. You don’t want to wait too long before getting the cribs in.”
“Thanks.” She walks back towards her bedroom, Fox only a step behind. “If things are slow enough, I might know by the end of the week.”
“I can’t wait.” Fox leans over, giving her a quick hug. “Now get some rest. I have two boys to wrangle so we can get to our dinner on time.”
“Good luck.” Eve chuckles, watching her leave.
Allanna looks up as Owen walks by the office. She tries to hide her grin as he slows, glancing in the office door at Eve. “Anything I can do for you, Mr. Burnett?”“Checking in on Eve.” He winks back at her. “I am sure you knew that, of course.”
“Of course.” She grins back. “She’s been doing fine today. No sudden breaks for the bathroom. I’d say her morning sickness is getting better.”
“Good.” Owen sighs softly, tension minutely draining from him. “I will worry until the babies are born.”
“So it’s definitely twins?” Allanna lifts one brow, tapping a finger on her desk.
“Yes.” Owen turns and starts back towards the hallway. “Please keep an eye on her for me.”
“Absolutely, Mr. Burnett.” She smirks, glancing behind her so see Eve growling at her computer.
“Uncle Owen,” Xander storms into the exercise room. “What did you do to Eve?”
“What do you mean?” He barely cracks an eye open, breathing evenly as he aims a punch at a padded dummy.
“She is extremely distracted, humming so much she forgets to respond when someone talks with her, and she’s starting to leak magic again.” Xander growls softly, stepping on the other side of the dummy
“She’s pregnant, an earth mage, and the song she is hearing is our children’s song.” He steps away from the dummy, knowing Xander is baiting him into a confrontation. He realizes the boy is responding to his need to protect his queen without knowing it. “She will be fine. It will take time for everything to settle.”
“She better be.” Xander begins to pace. “How can she hear the song?”
“Actually it is only part of the song.” Owen begins to unwrap the tape from his knuckles. “She can only do one child at a time. The songs twine together and then drift apart before coming back together again.”
Xander taps his foot, brows furrowed. “So she can only hear one at a time?”
“No, she can only hum or play one at a time.” Owen tosses the tape into the trash.
“What if she played one while I recorded it?” Xander whispers softly, deep in thought. “I could record one, then the other and then put the two together.”
“And then play it back as one song.” Owen stops, watching the young man intently. “It could work. I will look at her schedule and see when she will have free time tomorrow. Maybe once the song is recorded she will be able to focus better on other matters.”
“Sounds like a plan.” Xander stalks towards the door. “I’ll go down to the studio and see what I need to do to get everything ready.”
“Are you sure about this?” Eve lifts her bow, eyeing Xander through the glass window.“Absolutely.” Xander smiles at her, flipping a few switches on his board. “I’ve been playing around in this recording studio since I was little. Play as long as you can for each one and I’ll put them together.”
“How are you going to know where they come together?” She settles the violin under her chin.
“By listening to the whole thing.” He settles into a chair, ready for her to start. “There will be refrains that will have the same melody and that’s where I will match them up.”
“Ok.” She sighs, closing her eyes and letting her mind drift to the song. “I hope this works.” She lays her bow on the strings and begins to play.
Elisa and Fox lead Eve to their favorite table, making sure chairs are moved for Eve to walk more easily through the dining room. Elisa pulls out a chair, waving Eve to it. Eve sighs heavily, settling her very noticeably expanding stomach next to the table.“You know I think you get bigger everyday now.” Elisa grins as she takes a chair next to her.
“No shit.” Eve rolls her eyes. “I swear just last week I could fit in the jeans I just bought.”
“That’s because you could.” Fox chuckles, handing out menus. “With two in there, you are going to get bigger faster than I ever did.” She pats Eve’s hand. “Don’t worry. You should be able to see more at tomorrow’s ultrasound.”
“Do I get to find out if I’m having Nieces or Nephews?” Elisa nearly bounces in her seat.
“Yes, I will tell you.” Eve can’t help but laugh at her friend. “But don’t get your hopes up on seeing any pics. Owen is being very protective over those.” She frowns as the waitress sets a glass of water in front of her. “Speaking of which, Xander has been as well. I swear those two are going to drive me crazy.”
“Didn’t you say you’ve been noticing several Fae men having been hanging around lately too?” Elisa glances around the room, noticing several men who have arrived just after them.
“Yeah, it’s been really weird.” Eve sips her water. “They have been very helpful when I don’t need the help.”
Fox groans, rubbing her eyes. “I should have seen this coming. Mom mentioned something to me about having a consort when I was pregnant. But since I didn’t show any power, I don’t think she thought it was necessary.”
“Consort?” Eve frowns. She waits until the waitress has taken their order before glancing around the room. “I’m lost. Why would I need a consort?”
“I’m not sure how it works.” Fox swirls her wine, savoring the smell. “All I do know is it will solidify your power base.” She tilts her head towards the men glancing their way. “It should also keep the wolves at bay.”
“Who should I ask about it though?” She notices the glances and lowers her voice. “Not Owen, since he’s been way overprotective lately.”
“Not Alexander.” Fox smirks as she tips her glass to Eve. “He doesn’t even know why he’s being protective of you.”
“Not Coyote.” Elisa lifts a brow as Eve stares at her in confusion. “I know he’s trying to be loyal to you but he’s a trickster. I can believe he would love to unseat Owen if he could.”
“As if I would let that happen.” Eve’s eyes go cold at the thought. “Best to keep him out of the equation.” She thinks for a minute before a small smile spreads across her face. “I know exactly who to ask. She has nothing to lose by telling me the truth.”
“Good.” Fox smiles evilly as their plates are placed in front of them. “I would like to see less of these wolves soon before I start using them for target practice.”
Eve waits until she is back in her rooms before picking up her cell. She quickly dials, knowing that only one person will pick up the phone at this time of day. She tries hard to not drum her fingers as the phone rings.“Hello?” A soft, confused woman’s voice finally answers.
“Still getting used to phones, Nalyah?” Eve smirks.
“Yes, My Queen.” Nalyah sighs softly. “There are many things I am still not comfortable with using. It would be much easier if I could see who I am talking with.”
“That can be done. Next time I will call the cellphone and Justin can show you how to facetime.” Eve leans back, pulling her feet up onto an ottoman.
“That would be wonderful, My Queen.” Nalyah’s voice trembles with excitement. “But I am sure you did not call to talk about that. I am afraid Justin is not here. May I tell him you called for him?”
“Actually, I called to talk to you.” She tries to not chuckle at the sharp intake of breath she hears. “I was hoping you could help me with something.”
“Your wish is my will, My Queen.”
“I only need your insight, Nalyah.” She picks at a blanket, not sure how to start.
She decides to tell her everything, even what she suspects. Nalyah listens intently, only asking a few questions. When she is done, Eve falls silent and waits for her to think.
“I believe you are right, My Queen.” Nalyah sighs softly. “A consort would settle much of the unrest.”
“Please tell me what you know about consorts.” Eve glances at the clock, noticing she still has an hour before Owen is due. “I don’t really know anything at all.”
“My Queen, it is quite simple. When the power is uneven in royalty, they choose a consort to help even out the balance. It is used to protect the one with less power against those who may harm them to get to the powerful one.” She thinks for a moment. “It is quite clear that you are the more powerful one and the fae have noticed this. That is why there are men following you.”
“So no woman would try?” Eve frowns, trying to understand.
“My Queen, it would not matter if it was man or woman to your bondmate. He swings both ways and would be happy with either in his bed!” Nalyah laughs softly. “What matters is that the male power balance out your female power!”
Eve blinks in shock at what she had just heard. “Swings both ways?”
“You did not know that he enjoys men as well as women?” Nalyah gasps. “I am sorry for my loose tongue, My Queen! I did not mean to make hardship amongst you!”
“Nalyah, it’s ok.” Eve sighs, letting it rest. “Just something we hadn’t talked about yet. So I need a man to balance power? Do I have to do anything with this man?”
“You must claim him.” Nalyah stammers out. “And I would pick someone your bondmate is comfortable with because eventually if you plan on keeping him as consort you must bring him to your bed.”
“Does he have to be Fae?” Eve mind is swirling with thoughts she doesn’t really want to have.
“No, My Queen.” Nalyah rushes on. “The two of you are so close that a human would work.” Eve hears Nalyah hesitate for a moment before blurting out a word. “Justin.”
“What?” Eve blinks, shocked again. “What about Justin?”
“Choose Justin.”
“Why? Not only would that be weird but you and him are in a relationship. I’m not going do anything to upset that.” Eve frowns and begins picking at the blanket again.
“Truly, My Queen, that would not be an issue.” Nalyah sighs. “A consort can take a lover if his Queen and King agree. We could still be together. As for why, Justin is already bound to you by blood. That is a bond the Fae cannot break easily. He is one you can trust and he would fight for both of you.”
“But Owen would have to allow him in my bed.” Eve snorts. “I don’t see that happening.”
“It does not have to be you he has to be with.” Nalyah chuckles. “I think you are thinking that you are the only reason your bondmate is behaving the way he is. Perhaps you should ask his opinion on bedmates before you make a decision?”
“Yeah, that does sound like a discussion we need to have.” Eve sighs softly, glancing at the clock again. “Thank you, Nalyah. I appreciate the help you have given me. I will call again soon to let you know what I decide. Maybe you can help me make sure I’m not leaving anything open to be exploited.”
“Glad to be of service, My Queen.”
“Good night, Nalyah.” Eve taps her feet together. “And if you feel it necessary, feel free to discuss this with Justin. I don’t want him to be surprised by anything.”
“Thank you, My Queen.” She sighs softly. “I think it would be best if I do. Until you need me again, My Queen.”
Eve listens to her hang up, her mind whirling with what she has been told.
