Chapter 102
Author’s Note: The previous 102 is now chapter 104.As Hakoda and his group began making its way South so did Torluq’s. This time he took the route he knew Chief Hakoda had followed. On the third day of travel they saw the Water Tribe ship being overtaken.
“We’ve got company!” Bato yelled as he saw three Fire Nation cruisers come from behind the destroyer they were overtaking.
Hakoda was making the call to retreat when a large wave came from the cruisers towards the destroyer and men in blue came rushing from below deck. “Pakku, go over there and tell them not to damage this ship. We need them to hold it still and flood it. Let the nonbenders come aboard and fight.”
Pakku zipped along the side of the destroyer relaying the message to his tribesmen to help hold the ship and prevent it from escaping. Hakoda’s warriors would be boarding soon and the non-benders were welcome to get in on the action so long as they were in their Water Tribe clothing.
The benders were visibly upset until Pakku told them to pick off any Fire Nation soldier that came on deck and push them to the bottom of the ocean without damaging any of the ship’s equipment and prevent the messenger hawks from escaping.
One bird did get away but to the Northern warriors surprise Iluak and Sangok quickly chased it down in a canoe before returning to the battle. Chief Hakoda had found a way to make a woman and a weakling like Sangok useful.
Sila panicked when the boat began to empty. Her brother wasn’t a bender. If she stayed behind she’d be discovered but if she left she’d have to fight the Fire Nation. She joined the group of men and exited hoping she would be able to find a place onboard the other the ship to wait out the battle. She ran across the deck of the large ship, ducking and dodging soldiers, instinctively calling water to block the fire being thrown at her. She found a small office and hid in it.
“Stop hiding and make yourself useful. There are a lot of soldiers on this ship,” a gruff but friendly voice called to her.
She looked at the tall man standing in the doorway. He was a stranger with a burn scar on his arm, “But I can’t fight.”
“Never asked you to,” Bato replied taking her hand and leading her back on deck towards the Water Tribe ship. “Help the injured.”
Sila’s jaw dropped as he smiled at her, “Aren’t you a Waterbender? I thought all female benders were taught to heal in the North. Iluak suspected there would be a few escapees when Torluq showed up.”
Sila stumbled over her feet but quickly got to work. She was soon joined by four others who’d hidden away on various ships to escape the North Pole. Iluak and Bato made sure they remained hidden as they helped the Southern Water Tribesmen.
The battle took longer than expected. Hakoda was greatful for Torluq’s timing. Four real Fire Nation cruisers showed up. His group wasn’t slouches but overtaking five ships at a time would have been too much to handle. He couldn’t afford leaving any survivors to reveal his capture trick.
The Southern warriors slaughtered every soldier they came in contact with. The Northern men wanted to leave them alive to gain information regarding the whereabout of the prisoners taking during the siege on their homeland. Hakoda compromised. All of the Fire Nation soldiers that weren’t already dead were loaded onto the destroyer. The Northern men could torture them all they wanted as they moved south but anyone still alive who had not talked by the time they reached the first ship they’d sunk would be murdered.
“Come here, Hakoda, Iluak was right,” Bato smiled showing him the five Waterbending healers and nonbenders who’d joined them.
Hakoda smiled back and sighed, “Just stay hidden for now and we’ll figure out what to do with you once we reach land.”
“Are you sending us back home?” Sila nervously asked.
Hakoda frowned, “Why would I do that after all the trouble you went through to leave? Besides, my mother would kill me for even thinking about it.”
The girls relaxed. They had made it. They were free.
The Northern men soon understood why Hakoda hadn’t bothered to take or interrogate any prisoners. Those willing to talk were low ranked and didn’t know anything. Those ranking high enough to know didn’t say a word or gave misinformation. They had been told countless times “The Avatar has been thrown into a volcano” or “The captured Water Tribe prisoners were relaxing on the beach”. They closest they got to the truth was, “The Avatar and captured Water Tribe barbarians are enjoying the amenities provided by our hospitable and generous Fire Lord.”
It was useless to waste time on them. When they reached the first sunken ship Hakoda went below deck on the destroyer. All but the women had been killed. They were being raped.
He yelled at the Northern Tribesmen, “Finish up and slit their throats, we have work to do.”
One of the men who had just pulled out of a pretty soldier, looked at Hakoda, “But they are women. We can’t just kill them.”
Hakoda took out his machete and did just that. “They are not women. They are Fire Nation soldiers.”
Most of the men stopped what they were doing. They were shocked he’d killed a woman so effortlessly. Three of them paid for their carelessness with their lives and several more were critically injured. They women they were raping were Firebenders who had been tied with rope. They had been waiting for the right moment to attack them. The women had set themselves free and were freeing their comrades. Six more of the Northern men were killed and thirteen more were injured before the men regained their senses and started fighting back.
When the female soldiers were again subdued Hakoda pointed to their casualties, “Who still has a problem killing enemy soldiers because they have breasts and vaginas? Those men would be alive and unharmed if not for their misguided notions of gender and chivalry.”
The Northern men stared at each other and the Fire Nation women. Many of the women were smiling even though they’d been tied with the cable found on their ship. One of the men approached one and received a stream of fire spat in his face.
Reluctantly the men picked up their machetes. This lesson from Chief Hakoda had been brutal but necessary. Chief Arnook was right, they would benefit from his experience. By the time Hakoda went back on deck to fetch the healers Pakku had raised the first ship and they had disposed of the remaining enemy.
The Northern warriors were angered to see the women who had stowed away with them. They blamed them for their lost comrades, calling them jinxes as they were being healed by them. They leveled similar insults at Sangok for taking a woman’s role as a healer as he removed their injuries.
Hakoda shook his head at their stupidity and barked, “There are no men or women in war –only allies and enemies. I will not allow you to insult those healing you. Now shut up and go make yourselves useful.”
As a group they moved all of the fish and edible sealife that came up with the first ship. It was kept alive and stored it in the sinks, bathtubs and whatever they could find to hold it on the ship. The flotilla moved on to the next boat repeating the process until all of them had been raised.
Hakoda pulled Pakku to the side, “Take one of the smaller Fire Nation vessels and the women; go ahead of us. Lower the outer ice wall so they don’t know about all of our defenses. I’m getting a bad feeling about some of these men.”
Pakku raised his eyebrow and discretely pointed, “Senneyok, Piolak, and Illitkosetsiak?
“How did you know?” Hakoda inquired.
“Your daughter made the same assessment when she met them.”
Hakoda smiled, “That is good to know; that is indeed good to know.”
