Disclaimer: I do not own Gargoyles/Disney related but the original character, Eve Anderson, is from my own mind and is not a character of Disney. I get no pay and am only doing this for fun |
I know it's a short chapter but I hope everyone is enjoying what I've posted so far. I have an end in sight but it's still far off enough yet that there will be lots more chapters to come. And as always, please review! I love the feedback! It keeps me going!
Puck watches Eve move amongst the horses, stroking each horse before moving onto the next. He steeples his fingers in front of him, leaning farther back in the lounger on the porch. He can see her clearly without her becoming self-conscience of being watched. He can feel her amusement at his stealth but knows if he were more obvious she would become aggravated instead. The air stirs slightly around him, bringing the smell of new growth. “I see you felt her newest acquisition.”
Grandmother Willow settles into a tall chair with a sigh. “I had wondered if she would manifest.” A smile touches her lips. “Her father, brother, and grandfather were all Earth Mages.” She winks at Puck’s startled stare. “You thought this was new? She knew her father had magic but she did not know what kind.” She points toward Eve. “That child always thought magic was magic until lately. Since I thought the magic only ran in the males of her bloodline, I was not going to disabuse her of that notion.”
“Earth Magic is not something I am very familiar with.” He taps one finger to his lips. “What can you tell me of it?”
“I am not sure if the Earth mages on this side of the world are different than the ones on the other side, mind you.” She narrows his eyes at him. “But it has always been my experience that Earth Magic flows strongest in women. They are very tied to the Earth, which is why she has an affinity for wild places.”
“I have never heard of one person embodying two types of magic before.” He sighs softly. “It worries me.”
“Let your worries rest, Young Prince.” She reaches out and pats his arm. “The talismans have taken care of all that.” Her eyes follow a truck as it pulls up in front of the barn. “Keep that young man close, Young Prince. One day you will need him dearly.”
“How do you know this?” He turns, eyes boring into her.
She stands, patting his arm again. “An old woman has her ways.” She nods towards where Eve is sitting on the wooden fence. “Let the magic take her where it leads. Give her plenty of time outdoors amongst the trees. The magic will stop leaking soon enough.” She hobbles down the porch towards the back of the couch.
Frowning, Puck mulls over her words. He watches Justin approach Eve, one hand gently tapping against the arm of the lounger.
“You are spoiled.” Eve murmurs to Thunder as he leans his head into her hands, fingers scratching along his jaw. “I bet you don’t get this when I’m not here.”“He does.” Justin folds his arms on the top rail. “Now that I know what to look for, I’ve been noticing fae coming up and leaving him food. Sometimes they will give him full body scratches.” He pats the stallion on his neck. “I always wondered how he was always so clean even when mud is everywhere. Now I know.”
She grins, pushing Thunder away. “He’s a lush. I’m really not surprised.”
“So how are you feeling?” Justin smiles back. “My nieces or nephews growing like weeds yet?”
“Like you can’t tell?” She rubs her small bump. “I’m feeling better but apparently I’m an Earth Mage now.”
“Well that’s not a surprise.” He chuckles, patting her leg. “Your dad and brother had it too.”
She throws her head back, groaning. “Seriously? And no one thought to tell me this?”
“No one thought you had it in you.” He scuffs his feet. “What changed?”
“The babies?” She rolls her eyes. “I seriously don’t know for certain. We went on a trip we thought would be nothing major and ended up in danger instead. I was afraid someone would hurt my family but I wasn’t going down without a fight.”
“Hell cat.” He chuckles again. “Purring and calm when everything is good but claws and fangs when needed.”
“Whatever!” She slaps at his arm.
He notices the violin case sitting on the other side of her. “What’s this?” He reaches around her, lifting it. “Thinking of picking it back up?”
“Maybe.” She takes it from him, stroking the case. “I promised him I would try.”
Justin looks towards the porch, seeing Puck watching them as he stretches out on a lounger. “I’m shocked he hasn’t changed form and come down here to be nosey yet.”
“I’m not.” She winks at Justin. “It’s a show of trust.” She laughs as he narrows his eyes at her. “Justin, he knows you won’t do anything to me.” She leans closer, laying her head on his shoulder. “Besides, we’re working on him not always being so clingy.”
Justin reaches up, gently rubbing her bump. “He has a reason to be clingy and protective. I would be worse.” He taps the case. “So are you going to play or just walk around with it all day?”
“I hear music.” She sits up, tapping the case. “It’s like two songs that sometimes mesh into one and sometimes they are different but harmonizing.”
“How do you think your dad came up with your song?” Justin lifts a brow at her. “He didn’t just pluck it from thin air.” He takes the case and opens it. “He heard you long before you were born.” He lifts the violin from the case, holding it out to her. “Play what you hear.”
She stares at the violin for a long moment before taking it from him. “I don’t know where to start.”
“Start with closing your eyes and listening.” He watches her intently. “Come in when you are ready.”
She closes her eyes, lifting the violin into position.
Puck sits up, watching her intently as she lifts the violin. The first notes drift to him, piling him from his seat. The music sounds familiar and yet not, as if he had heard it in a distant dream. His eyes close, listening as the sound flows through him. He realizes that the song should be a duet, the second violin missing where there are gaps in the music. He opens his eyes, following the pull of the song as he leaves the porch.Eve finally slides the violin from her shoulder, frustrated. She opens her eyes to see Puck and Justin staring back at her, enraptured. “It’s not complete. It’s not right.”
“It’s a duet.” Puck’s lips twitch up. “It won’t when only one instrument is playing.”
“But I can’t play two at once!” She growls back, running one hand through her hair.
“Then don’t.” Justin pats her leg. “Play one side for a while and then the other.”
“I guess.” She sighs, sliding off of the railing. “I just wish I didn’t have to.”
Puck pulls her into his arms, kissing her forehead. “Don’t fret, My Dear. It will come.”
“I know.” She breathes in his scent, letting it calm her. “Be patient.”
Justin smiles, seeing her taking strength from Puck. “Alright, break it up before you need a room.”
“Who says we need a room?” She grins wickedly at him. “There’s always the loft.”
“La la la la!” He puts his fingers in his ears and stars to walk away. “I don’t need to hear this!” He lifts his middle finger at her. “Now I have to go wash that mental image out of my brain!!”
“Whatever!!” Her laugh follows him into the barn.
They settle down next to a tree, Puck eyeing the surrounding woods. “This should be far enough.” He pulls her closer so he can wrap his arms around her. “Now close your eyes and let everything go.”“You sure I won’t hurt anyone?” She closes her eyes, still nervous someone might be too close.
“If any of my brethren are close by, then they will quickly leave.” He kisses her neck gently. “As for Justin, he is far enough away.”
“If you say so.” She tries to relax, letting the magic flow away from her. She can feel every living thing it touches, expanding her awareness. She feels Puck open their bond more, taking some of the strain from her. As the magic flows out of her, everything around her becomes lusher. She realizes how much she had been holding in as all the tension leaves her body.
“Good.” He whispers softly to her. “Now gently pull yourself back without pulling the magic back into you.”
She feels him ‘show’ her what to do through the bond. As she cuts herself off from the magic she had released, her body relaxes more. Finally she feels as if she is back in her own skin. She opens her eyes, tired but relaxed.
“I didn’t realize…” She starts but he hushes her with a light touch to her lips.
“I know.” He stands, pulling her with him. “Now it’s time for you to get some rest. We will do this again tomorrow morning.” He slides his arm around her waist, his touch warm and comforting. “I will see how often we need to do this after we get back. A short drive outside the city should do.”
“Are you sure?” She leans into him. “I don’t want to hurt anyone.”
“You won’t.” He grins down at her. “Earth Magic is of growth and life, not destruction. The worst you will do is make someone grow a sudden spurt of body hair.”
“Could make for some interesting conversation is some woman suddenly grew a bunch of leg hair.” She giggles, bumping her hip into him as they walk between the barns.
“I’m sure leg hair would be the least of her problems.” He leans over and whispers. “All of her body hair would grow.”
“EEEWW!” She scrunches up her face. “I’d get the scissors out for sure!”
He laughs as he steers her into the house.
