Chapter 099
Sila crawled away from Senneyok, the asshole her father had promised her to. Their wedding was planned for the spring but he would be leaving the North Pole with Torluq to go to war tomorrow morning. Rather than risk losing the connection to such a strong Waterbender and the chief’s nephew her father had allowed him have her before the formal ceremony took place as a way to cement the bond between their families.
She bent away his semen and cleansed herself of his unwanted touch before creeping to her teacher’s igloo. Kanna, was named after her aunt who had run South to avoid marriage. Like her aunt, it was well known Kanna hated the man her father had promised her too, but since she was a Waterbender she’d been heavily guarded so she couldn’t run. Sila was in the same position.
Kanna of the North had approached her under the pretext of learning how to be a good wife and mother. Instead she had been learning specialized techniques taught only to a select group of healers – keepers. Women whose own forced marriages ensured made them prime candidates to support the oppressed women of their tribe by any means necessary.
They took care of women after their husbands beat or raped them. They performed abortions when necessary or blocked reproductive organs when successive pregnancies caused too large of a strain on a woman’s body. They sometimes caused birth defects to help a woman seeking vengeance on a cruel husband.
Most frequently they removed all signs a woman had been with her chosen lover.
As a keeper, Sila already knew her what she needed to do to ensure Senneyok’s seed did not take hold but she Kanna had the herbs she needed to drug her brother. He would be on a different boat than the jackass her father had promised her to. She would be taking his place next to Pilitak, her lover, and traveling South to freedom. Pitilak had told her the reason Torluq returned was that Chief Hakoda allowed Iluak to accompany him into battle as a healer.
Sila had meet his daughter Katara when she was at the North Pole with the Avatar. They were in the same class being taught by Kanna. Katara was everything the girls in the North wished they could be. Katara was liberated.
If she could make it to Chief Hakoda she would not be forced to marry a man she didn’t love. Her life would be her own.
Fighting the Fire Navy with Waterbenders was relatively simply. Hakoda had used the supplies they’d taken from Whale Tail island to rig their ships as a decoys. They had replaced all of the rope with the fire proof metal cables and loaded them with bed sheets cut in the shape of sails. They had created metal openings in the wooden sides and deck then filled them with wet leaves which would smoke heavily but take a while to catch on fire.
When they saw a Fire Nation ship approaching the Water Tribe would open fire using the stolen trebuchets and long range boomerangs. Once the Fire Nation returned fire, the Waterbenders would lower the boats while non benders replaced the sails with stolen bedsheets and set them on fire as well as the fire boxes to make it appear as though it was an easy victory.
When the Fire Navy got closer, Pakku and the Waterbenders would sweep everyone on deck overboard. Their heavy armor did the rest. Hakoda and his troops would then attack the ship using the oil filled bladders and balloons against the Firebenders while the Waterbenders held the ship so it wouldn’t escape and flooded the portholes.
Once the bodies of everyone on board had been tossed over with they would hide their ships and comb through the Fire Nation boat searching for information about where they were holding his children and the Avatar. The food and other immediately useful things would be taken. The ship would then be towed to a safe located, encased in ice and sank to the bottom of the ocean where it could be retrieved later.
Hakoda’s group averaged two ships a day before finally finding one with information. His children were not in the Fire Nation, they were being taken on a tour of the Earth Kingdom to prove the Avatar really was captured. The document only said the Fire Lord’s most prized possession as well as the ship’s precious cargo must be protected from the Water Tribe. They were attacking the larger ship with stolen Fire Nations cruisers. It was dated shortly after leaving the South Pole so Hakoda guessed it referred to Torluq’s group.
Hakoda called everyone deck, “Warriors, thank you for accompanying me on this journey. I have found a letter that claims my children are not in a Fire Nation jail. They are on a ship bound for the Earth Kingdom.”
Hakoda read the document, “We must not grow complacent now that we have captured the Avatar, his Waterbender, and her brother. The Avatar is currently on his way to the Earth Kingdom. The world can no longer doubt Fire Nation superiority when they see their hope in chains.
The Avatar is also the perfect bait to flush out the remaining rebels. As you know his Earthbender is still missing. She is most likely planning to rally his supporters and will no doubt attempt a rescue. When they appear it will be our time to strike and crush the rabble once and for all.
You will receive information about the scheduled ports on an as needed basis.
In the meantime, my most prized possession must be guarded at all cost as it travels with precious cargo. The Water Tribe has been using our cruisers against to attack our larger less agile ships.
If you are approached by a cruiser that does not first show a Firebending sequence, destroy it.
Hakoda turned his gaze back to his followers, “I cannot attest to the validity of this information. It was dated several weeks ago and only mentions Torluq’s group not ours so I am guessing it is authentic. We will continue as we have been until we get further proof. If this is accurate I am changing our mode of operation. We will need to raise all of the ships we’ve stolen and take them back to the South Pole. Our people will need the supplies and we will need to shore up their defenses.
The next seven ships they attacked contained the same message. Hakoda could no longer hope his children’s capture was more propaganda and rumor. He gathered his troops around him on the bloody deck, “Fire Lord Ozai will learn the proper way to raid a village. We will start with his southern colonies. Everything that can be moved will be taken to the South Pole before we move north to the next. I can understand if some of you do not wish to join me if it comes to that. There will be no survivors left, men, women, children, infants, unedible pets. It is your choice and I will respect you for it. I know none of you signed up for the war intending to kill innocents.”
“I will do what I must until I get my children,” Hakoda said with a finality that made even Bato and Pakku shudder.
