DP Ch 10
"Hey dad," Danny yelled as he came bopping down the stairs to the lab in the basement. "Mom told me you needed help moving some stuff out to the storage shed."
"I do?" Jack Fenton asked in surprise and looked up from the workbench at his son's sudden appearance having seen no one since dinner time over an hour ago. "Oh yeah I do! But where have you been? I told your mother I needed help hours ago and I couldn't find anyone in the house."
"Sam and I were checking over our homework in my room," Danny lied through his teeth, not wanting to discuss with his dad the topic of him making out with his girlfriend. "I guess we got so caught up in the subject matter we didn't hear you calling. I'm here now so, what do you need taken out to the shed?"
"Well, when I couldn't find anyone I took everything out to the shed myself," Jack said looking up from his precise work of welding two small pieces of equipment together. He suddenly realizing that he never really needed help with any of his minor jobs and that he had enjoyed his little trip to the shed since he found those exact two pieces of equipment he'd forgotten he had and needed for his current project. He quickly checked the weld and, satisfied with the work, patted the seat next to him at the work bench. "Sit down Danny. We haven't talked man to man talk in ages and since it's your birthday tomorrow I think it's time we had one."
Danny sighed a heavy sigh, knowing that he'd eventually have to have this talk with his father. "Might as well get it over with since Sam is helping mom," he thought, "UNLESS..." He sat down next to his father and grinned. "What're you working on, dad?" He knew one thing and one thing only could distract his father from everything else. Jack Fenton could blather on about ghosts for hours and hours so... "Is it ghost related?"
Jack Fenton's face lit up like a Christmas tree being hit with a two ton load of Napalm. "Why actually it's not!"
"Not Ghost Related?" Danny almost shouted in total surprise. "Why Isn't It Ghost Related?"
"Well, I suppose it could be used to fight ghosts," Jack said in deep thought before shaking that train of thought from his head and returning to his sunnier disposition, "but its actual use would be to identify and track airplanes and missiles in flight!"
"Isn't there a thing called radar that does the same thing?" Danny begged.
"Yes, yes," Jack nonchalantly waved his son's words off. "But my system uses aggressive microwaves instead of the passive radar waves used in most systems. My system is powerful enough it could be used to shoot down terrorist airborne attacks, taking them out before any damage could be done. It also could possibly disrupt a ghost's DNA to the point that it would dissolve to a vaporous mist which would dissipate in the slightest breeze before it could reassemble."
"So it could virtually kill a ghost... I mean permanently get rid of them?" Danny asked nervously, not wanting to be anywhere near something that could destroy the ghostly part of him and maybe even kill him.
"Yes it could," Jack said as the realization hit him. "I knew there was a reason I was creating this system!"
"But the other application," Danny started hesitantly. "To be able to take out an airborne terrorist attack. Couldn't that be considered a weapon of war? I know you don't like building anything that could possibly be used to harm a human being."
"You're right," Jack moaned as it dawned on him. "I suppose if it got into the wrong hands my system could be used to bring down any airplane, terrorist or not." The large man slumped onto the work table and sulked low. "Damn my ethics! I knew I shouldn't have taken that on-line class to become a ordained Priest."
"Wait," Danny uttered in surprise, "you're an ordained Priest? Why?"
"I thought it would be one way to capture and get rid of ghosts," Jack said in frustration. "Unfortunately, I can only exorcise Demons with the rites and rituals I learned about. I found out later that they don't work on ghosts. We all know Demons don't exist so that folly was just a waste of time."
"Well, it's not a total loss," Danny tried to cheer up his father who, come to think about it, was also a Father of the church. "I mean you could always perform other ceremonies and charge people for them. You could perform marriages and baptisms and such."
"I could?" the big guy said unsure before he perked up with the new knowledge he missed the first time he thought about becoming a Priest, "I guess I could!" He got a manila folder out of the workbench drawer, opened it and he pulled out a single piece of paper. "Heck! All I'd have to do is fill out this piece of paper and suddenly two people would be legally married!"
"Do you mean that," Danny questioned as he snatched the piece of paper from his dad's hand and peered at it with wide eyes, "all you'd have to do is, say, put Sam's and my name on this piece of paper and we'd be legally married?"
"Well, technically," Jack snatched the paper back from his son and began to write on it, "I'd have to write something about how you’re both underage right now and have permission from your parents to marry. Then it's only a matter of signing it and Voila, you two are man and wife!" He finished writing his name in the proper place with a flourish.
Danny grabbed the page from under his father's pen and peered at it. "You mean all that needs to be done now is Sam and I sign this and we'd be married?"
"That's right," Jack said proudly. "Well that, and then you'd have to register the marriage certificate downtown." He moved to take the paper back from his son but Danny was quicker and managed to hold it out of Jack's reach.
"Uh Uh! Sam might want to see this first," Danny said to his old man. "Sam and I haven't decided which religion we should get married under and I'd like to show her this as another alternative." Jack was still reaching for the certificate so Danny decided to distract the man. "Besides, shouldn't you be worried about the potential dangers your new aggressive tracking system might have?"
"You're right again," Jack Fenton slumped down and peered warily at the two pieces of equipment he had welded together. He scratched his head in thought. "I suppose... if I didn't want it to be lethal to aircraft... I'd just need to..." His large hands danced across the gadget in front of him in excited repair.
"Thanks for the guy-to-guy talk," Danny said as he folded the paper and stuck it in his back pocket. He got up from the workbench and swiftly went to the staircase. "We should do this more often."
"Yes, yes," Jack said dismissively, intently focused on the tracking system and its flaws. "We'll have another man-to-man talk in another fifteen or twenty years or so."
"Man!" Danny chuckled to himself as he walked up the steps to the first floor, "It's getting easier and easier to avoid that conversation with dad."
"What conversation?" Sam asked as she stomped down the steps from the second floor to her boyfriend, obviously in a foul mood.
"Hey Sam," Danny cheerily sang and kissed her on the cheek only to be shoved aside as the Goth-girl pushed her way past him and continued her bee-line to the kitchen. "Sam, what's wrong?" he queried following her in deep concern.
"Your mother!" Sam growled, threw open the refrigerator and snatched a bottled water before she slammed the door shut and took a long pull from the container.
"What about mom?" Danny begged, unsure how he could help out his obviously angry girlfriend. "What did she do this time?"
"Your mom just warn me not to proceed with my plans for next week," Sam spat and took another quick swig of water as her anger waned. "I was planning to jump your bones next weekend after my birthday party," she confessed. Sam's face softened in a loving look at her beau. "I've been getting really frustrated waiting to consummate our love and decided we would do it after we both turned eighteen."
"I've been fairly frustrated myself," Danny chuckled lightly with a slight blush showing on his cheeks and the tops of his ears, "to the point I've wanted to jump your bones on more than a few occasions." His blush amped up in a panic. "But I know it's up to you when we finally make love! I don't wanna force you into anything you don't want to do until you're ready for it!"
"Oh I'm ready!" Sam purred and eyed her guy in a new light as her intense stare focused on his concerned face. "I've been ready for a few years now but I didn't want to start anything until you were sure you wanted it too." Her visage took on an evil, scheming countenance. "Since we both don't want to wait, let's get it on now."
"Are you sure, Sam?" Danny asked in concern. "I mean you're mad at mom right now and maybe you just want to do it because you want to get back at her."
"Danny," Sam tossed the empty water bottle over her shoulder without looking and it landed in the recycle bin, "I want you because of what your mom said and despite it too. I was planning our coupling to happen after my birthday party so if it happens a week early, well, so be it."
Sam wrapped her arms around Danny's neck and pulled him close to plant a long, wet French kiss on his lips that lasted a little longer than either of the two teens could hold their breathes. They came up gasping for air. "Wow," Danny marveled, "I guess you really are ready to do it."
"Yes I am," Sam confirmed with a giggle and she wiggled her nether region into his crotch which she could feel had come to life, "and I can feel you're ready to do it too."
"S-so," Danny stutter in sexual anticipation, his body jumpy with the extra pounding of his blood coursing through his body at the prospect of the event to come, "where do we do it? I think my room is out since mom has it monitored. She told me she has the whole house hooked up to the surveillance system."
"And I would guess she probably has my house monitored too," Sam said in deep thought to the situation. "Our moms have gotten to be friends over the last few years so they've probably united in their front to keep us virgins until they‘re ready to be grandmothers."
Sam glanced furtively around the kitchen, looking high and low for the cameras she now knew were there if her boyfriend was right. She spotted an anomaly in a single ceiling panel in the corner of the room and broke from Danny's arms. "Look here," she said as she grabbed a chair and set it under the ceiling panel then got up on the chair to get a closer look.
Danny peered at the seemly solid white area and stood on a chair himself. "Yep, that's a camera. And this looks like one of my dad's patented aroma sensors," he poked a small node next to the well-concealed camera.
"Your dad created an aroma sensor?" Sam questioned her beau. "Why?"
"He thought it could be used to seek out ghosts," Danny laughed. "It was created with a wide spectrum analyzer so it’s suppose to be able to smell a ghost's plasma or slime."
Sam peered warily for a few seconds before she hopped down off the chair. "Is the spectrum wide enough to sense, say, human pheromones?"
"Yeah but..." Danny jumped down and as his feet hit the floor it hit him. "Oh Man! Mom can set the sensors to smell out when we're horny!"
Danny went ghost and linked hands with Sam. They became intangible, flew up through the ceiling and spotting the cables trailing away. They followed the snaking wires up into the secret room behind the upstairs closet. "Whoa!" Sam exhaled as she took in all of the monitoring equipment. "It looks like your mom has all of Amity Park wired!"
“If that's the case," a wicked smirk played across Danny's face, "maybe we can figure out just where she doesn't have a camera."
