PART X; Image Reinvention
~*~*~*~*~
Jade attempted to clean up, but she was so giddy that the clone had remembered her that she didn’t get all that much done. Unaware to her that her giddiness was transmitted through the bond she shared with her copy, the even the copy was too giddy to even properly dress herself, stopping every so often to burst into a bout of giggles.
But they were able to get something done after a minute or two. Jade already has most of the books back on the shelf or in their original position in stacks on the desk, when Clone came into the library fully dressed. The two of them smiled at one another, and without any words, the girls started back to cleaning, only this time they stuck together and kept an eye on each other.
The library, to the two girls, seemed like the room that took the most damage, since books were flying around like projectiles and crashed into glass objects. Thankfully, not too much of Uncle’s various beakers and vials and ingredients were not destroyed, and the pervious puddle of gunk did not eat through the floor or left a stain (if anything, it cleaned out all the dust and grime of the past years out of that particular area, leaving behind a nice shiny spot of wood).
While cleaning, the two were able to chat, Jade asking Clone some questions.
“So, you remember everything?” She asked.
Clone nodded her head. “Well, you made the first copy to do your homework so you could go to an arcade.” She then looked over at the embarrassed Jade and scolded. “I’m still a little upset about that, by the way.”
“I said I was sorry.” Jade frowned, but could not help but smile again. “Can I ask you something else?”
Clone nodded her head once more, pushing a stack of books onto a shelf. “Sure, what’s up?”
“I never got a chance to ask you, and I tried thinking of an explanation, but.” Jade turned to the copy, shuffling her foot nervously. “I know you did it so that I wouldn’t take the blame by myself, but why did you make extra copies of yourself? What was, like, going through your mind?”
Clone was about to pick up some more books, when she stopped and pondered on that. “I… I don’t know. It, just seemed like the right thing to do. Why?”
“Well, the spell I used to make you, and the others, had these, well, extra ingredients that changed your personality.” Jade admitted.
Clone was confused. “My, personality? Why change my personality? Was something wrong with two exact Jades?”
Jade made a half nod. “Well, I once used the same spell to make another me a while ago, and well, the copy being exact like me, didn’t really listen to me.”
Clone seemed to understand, but then pondered about something once more. “Wait… I, I remembered, a big, green, ugly thing.”
Jade was surprised. “Wait, you remember Po Kong?”
Clone snapped her fingers. “The Mountain Demon!”
Jade smiled. “Yeah! How do you remember that?”
Clone brought her hand to her temple, furrowing her brow. “I, don’t know. I remember a lot of things, all of a sudden.” She then made a groan and held her head in her hands. “Ugh, my head hurts.”
Jade reached out there their bond, and found that Clone was not feeling well. She walked up to her and let her sit down to rest.
“It could be your body reacting to the blood lost.” Jade thought aloud.
Clone nodded her head. “Yeah.” She occupied herself and started to stack some books close to her in a pile. “I remember a lot, but most of it is kind of fuzzy.”
“Don’t worry about it.” Jade went back to work, but then felt something through her bond with Clone and turned back.
Clone seemed sad about something.
“What is it?” Jade asked.
“You do know that no matter how much you beg and plead, Uncle is going to get rid of me, right?” Clone looked up to Jade. “It can’t be stopped. You know how stubborn he can be.”
Jade nodded her head, and now she felt bad. Uncle’s going to be upset about his shop, that’s for sure. But, if he learns that Jade has made yet another copy with some reserved spell that Tohru had kept hidden, (for some unknown reason) he is going to have kittens!
Jade sighed and leaned against the wall. “If only there was a way to keep you permanently hidden. Like, change the way you look.”
It was at the moment, upon uttering those words, both Jades had a thought, and looked at one another.
“Didn’t Tohru have a bunch of pages like that in his book?” Clone asked.
Jade nodded. “He did.” But then she grew sad once more. “Oh, but he could have destroyed it by now, or maybe locked it away.”
“Do you think it could be in his room?” Clone asked.
“If it’s still here, that’s a good place for it to be. But, his door is locked.” Jade said.
Clone thought about this, pondering how to overcome such an obstacle. It was then, she had an idea. “Wait, if Tohru had hidden the reserves like he did,” She pointed to the area of fake books for emphasis. “Then, maybe he did the same for his book, or something similar?”
Jade did understand, but was a little confused. “But where could it be?”
Clone thought about this, and had another idea, and stood up in a flash and headed out of the library. “Follow me!”
Jade was confused, but followed her copy out of the room, and up the stairs, and finally to Tohru’s locked door.
“What is it?” She asked.
Clone looked over at her with a smile. “It’s a long shot, but it could be worth it.”
Jade became increasingly confused. “What?”
Clone rapped on the door. “Give me a boost.”
Jade shrugged her shoulders and cupped her hands together for a foot hold, and Clone stepped down and was hoisted up on Jade’s shoulders.
“Do you remember when Mom and Dad used to lock their bedroom, and then hid the key on top of the doorframe?” Clone asked from above.
Jade made a half nod. “Yeah, I could never reach that high without getting a chair or something.” It then occurred to her, and she looked up. “Why?”
Clone had a big grin on her face, when she brandished a key she had gotten off the top of the doorframe. “I think Tohru had the same idea.”
Jade couldn’t help but let out a squeal of excitement, letting her copy jumped down off her shoulders, took the key, and hurriedly opened the door. Once inside, the two girls did not waste any time and went to search for that notebook. They were smart enough not to start throwing things around; they were careful and made sure everything was in their original position.
They searched everywhere. Tohru’s drawers, his dresser, under his bed, under his mattress, in his closet, in his spare pants and such. Everywhere. But there seemed to be no trace of it. Though, to the girls, it was an admirable try. Both of them let out a deep sigh and sat down on the ground, leaning against the wall, looking around the room.
“It was a good thought, though.” Jade murmured.
“Yeah, it was.” Clone agreed.
The two of them made a simultaneous sigh, standing back up to leave. As they did, however, Jade noticed something odd. One of the floorboards, right next to Tohru’s bed, had a hole in it. It was odd, because she remembered that there wasn’t a hole there before.
She tried to ignore it, thinking it was just mice, but at the same time her mind was working. Right before she left the room, she suddenly turned around and when back in and up to the floorboard, confusing the copy. Jade taped her foot on it, listening to it squeak under her weight, and then stooped down, stuck her finger in the hold, and pulled. The boarded came off with no resistance, revealing a hidden cavity. Inside were a series of trinkets. A bag of potato chips, some stashed cash, a small locked box, and, underneath it all, a composition notebook with the words “Tohru’s, Do not Touch” written in ink on the front.
Jade brought the notebook out of the cavity, holding it before her in disbelief. “I…I found it.”
Clone was there by her side, smiling greatly. “You found it!”
Both of them looked at the book, then down to the cavity in the floor, the back to the book, and finally at each other.
“Make you wonder, if Tohru has other hidden areas all over the shop.” Jade mused.
“Maybe it was something he picked up when he worked for the Dark Hand.” Clone said.
But then, none of that mattered, for they found what they were looking for. The two of the rushed out of the room and was about to hurry down the steps, and Jade suddenly stopped by the hand grabbing the back of her shirt.
Jade looked over at the Clone, confused. “What is it?”
Clone pointed down over the railings. “Look!”
Jade looked over the edge and down into the shop, and saw that Clone wasn’t pointing at anything in particular. She looked back, more confused. “I don’t see anything.”
Clone looked at her with wide eyes. “Exactly! Notice anything missing?”
Jade looked back down and blinked a few times. Well, aside from the carnage that occurred and the mess it left in its wake, nothing really seemed to be-…
She then noticed it. “Where’s Spence?”
The agent that was knocked out and leaned against the wall, was not where he should be. That space was empty. The two girls quickly looked around the room and wherever they could see from their position, but could not see him anywhere. Cautiously, Jade gave Clone the notebook and carefully went down the stairs, keeping her ears open for any sounds.
She did hear something; soft clattering, coming from the kitchen. She tipped-toed over and peeked around the corner. The refrigerator door was open, and standing before it was agent Spence, making an awful racket as he rummaged through the fridge. She drew closer, and he could hear him mumbling to himself in some odd language she never heard of.
She cleared her throat, and was startled when he suddenly turned around, a bone sticking out of his mouth. Jade then saw the remains of poultry on a plate Spence had in his hands.
“My chicken…” Jade murmured to herself, then turned her attention to the agent. “Um, Mr. Spence? Are you feeling alright?”
The agent did not answer, rather, he spat out the bone, bonking Jade on the head with it. She winced and rubbed the spot and scolded the man, and was about to say something to him how he was being a jerk, and he suddenly exploded into a long, angry sentence in that same language he was mumbling not too long ago, rambling on and on, making the child take a few steps back.
“Fine, you can have it! Jeez.” Jade was worried about him. Perhaps the blow to the head gave him brain damage?
Rather suddenly, the agent took off, plate in hand, and looked like he was running away.
Jade, seeing where he was heading, acted quickly. “Mr. Spence! Look out for that-!”
The retreated agent failed to see the toppled chair in his path, tripped over it, and landed on the ground with a great thud. Jade quickly rushed up to him, seeing if he was okay. It was at that moment Clone peeked around the corner to see what was happening, and saw the agent on the floor and Jade standing over him.
“My gosh, did you kill him?” She suddenly asked.
“What?! No!” Jade responded. “He fell!” She knelt down and gave the man a few pokes. “I think he’s out again, too.”
“What happened?” Clone asked, giving the man a poke as well.
Jade shrugged her shoulders. “It was weird. He was talking in some strange mumbo-jumbo, eating my food, and he just took off and tripped.” He gave the man another poke. “I think he’s broken.”
“You think he’ll be okay?” Clone asked.
Jade shrugged her shoulders. “He’ll be fine.” she stood up and was about to leave, when Clone stopped here.
“Wait, we’re just going to leave him like this?” She asked.
“This guy’s looks like he’s over two hundred pounds. Do you feel like dragging him across the room?” Was Jade’s response.
Clone looked down at the man, and then stood up. “Good point. He’ll be fine.” She followed Jade out of the kitchen, but she looked back to the prone man. “What do you think made him act like that anyway?”
Jade shrugged her shoulders. “Hard telling. Could be a lot of things.”
The two girls went into the library and sat the book down on the table, opening it up and looking at all the different spells, forming a plan.
“Do you want different color hair?” Jade asked.
Clone shook her head. “I’m fine with black, but I would like to make it longer.”
“Okay. What about your eyes?” Jade then asked.
“Ooh! I always wanted green eyes!” Clone smiled.
Jade smiled as well. “Oh yeah! That would be pretty! Maybe we can make you taller too.”
“Not too tall, I still want to fit in our clothes.” Clone added.
Jade nodded. “Yeah we can do that. Ooh, here’s a spell to make your skin a different color.”
“Ya’know, you’ve been here for like, what, a year? And not once did you get a proper tan.” Clone said.
“You’d you like to be tanned?” Jade asked.
Clone nodded her head. “I think I would look nice, yeah.”
“I think that’s everything.” She flipped through the book, and beyond the duplication spell and the others, she found other spells she has yet to see. “Oh hey. We can change your voice too!”
“But I like my voice.” Clone frowned.
“But if we sound the same, it would cause suspicion.” Jade explained.
Clone frowned again. “Okay, fine, we’ll make it higher. But not too high, I don’t want to sound like a chipmunk.”
Jade giggled. “Okay. That’s everything we can do aside from giving you a different finger print. And I don’t think we can do that.”
Clone smiled. “Well, it’s not like they’re going to ask for one, huh?”
The two girls skimmed through the pages and listed the ingredients for each new spell, running through Uncle’s inventory to find the right components. The usage of the spells varied. Some of them, such as the skin alteration and the hair growth, came in the form of a powder. Whereas others, like the eye changes and the voice changes, came as a drinkable potion. Some of them, like the growth spell, came in the form of a viscous cream that was used to rub on the skin.
Soon enough the girls had all their components ready.
“Okay, you ready?” Jade asked.
Clone nodded her head and looked at the various bowls of powder, vials of potion, and a little plate with a wad of cream before her. “Which one do I start with?”
~*~Elsewhere, in the Netherlands~*~
Four men stand outside a wondrous church, looking up at a vast clock tower above.
The eldest of these four men, the sage like Uncle, looked down at two objects in his hands. In one hand was a tome of enchantment, while in the other was a small jingle bell connected to some twine. The bell itself glowed with an otherworldly purple aura.
“It is, close by.” He mumbled to himself.
The largest of these men, the massive Tohru, looked at the map he had in his hand. “It is called, the… We-… Western, Kirk?”
The man next to him, Jackie, peeked over. “That’s Westerkerk.”
Tohru nodded his head. “Ahh, yes.” He looked back at the map, and with a smile on his face he looked down at the eldest man next to him. “Sensei, the Anne Frank house is close by.”
Uncle quickly turned and struck Tohru on the head with his fore and middle finger. “We are not sightseeing!”
The sternest of the four men, Captain Black of Sector 13, stepped forward, tapping on his chin as he looked up at the clock tower of the church. “My agent told me that in his vision, he saw pipes of silver and gold, and whatever it is that we are looking for maybe close to them, or behind them.”
Jackie looked to Captain Black. “How does he now it is here?”
Captain Black pointed to a statue of a little girl that was nearby. “He saw that.”
Jackie cocked an eyebrow. “Anne Frank?”
Captain Black just shrugged his shoulders and brought out a walkie-talkie he had one his belt. “Alright, everyone keep your eyes peeled for anything suspicious and report to me every five minutes. Got that?”
On the other end of his walkie were a series of “Yes air!”
The men started to head into the church, when Jackie stopped halfway. Tohru caught this.
“Jackie? Is something wrong?”
Jackie shook his head. “No, everything is alright.” In truth, he just suddenly had a chill up his spine, and for some odd reason, he felt like he should give the shop a call. He got the cell phone off his belt. “I’m going to check on Jade.”
Tohru nodded and followed the rest into the church.
~*~Back in San Francisco~*~
Clone looked at the saucer of cream in her hand, having finally decided what spell to use first. “So, I just rub it on my face, or anywhere?”
“Yeah, I think so.” Jade said. “Do you want to be left alone?”
Before Clone could answer, the phone suddenly rang.
“I’ll get it.” Jade rushed out of the library to the front desk of the shop, quickly picking up the phone. “Yellow?”
“Jade? It’s Jackie.” The other end responded.
Jade involuntary jumped at the sound of his voice. “Oh, hey! S’up?”
“I just wanted to call and check up on you, see how you are doing.”Jackie responded. “Are you behaving yourself?”
Jade looked around at the mess. “Yeah, I am. I’m just, hanging around.”
“Is Agent Spence there with you?” Jackie asked.
Jade peeked around the corner of the kitchen to find said agent still prone on the floor. “Yeah, he’s here.”
“May I speak with him?” Her uncle asked.
Jade panicked. “Oh! Umm, he’s… in the bathroom!” Before Jackie had a chance to continue, Jade went on. “Listen Jackie; I can’t talk right now, I got homework to do. Yup, lots of homework that needs to be done. So much homework.”
There was a short silence at the end of the line, when Jackie responded. “Well, alright then. I will call back later to check again. Goodbye.”
“Bye Jackie!” Jade hung up the phone, and after few short seconds, she laid her head on the counter. “That sucked.”
“Jade?” She heard Clone call to her. “I had an accident.”
Jade raised her head up. Accident? She went into the library, and suddenly bumped into Clone. But, instantly, Jade noticed something was wrong. She was no longer looking at Clone face to face at equal height; she was now looking up at her. Clone, was now a good head taller than she was.
Clone’s face was flushed furiously, as she used one hand to keep the front of her shirt over her midriff. “I think I used too much of that cream.”
“Whoa.” Jade took a step back and looked at the copy from head to toe. Indeed she had gotten taller, and in the process her clothes gotten shorter, but by the looks of it they all still fit, albeit not as loosely as they did. “Are, you okay with this?”
Clone fidgeted and fumbled with her shirt. “It’s different.”
“You don’t have to do that, ya’know. I don’t mind.” Jade said, pointing to the copy’s hands.
“Yeah, but I feel kind of exposed like this.” Clone released her shirt and allowed her midriff to show. “Feel’s weird.”
“Okay, so some of the clothes are a little short, we can work with this.” Jade went over to the table with the finished spells, and picked up one of the bowls of powder. “Let’s do one of these now.”
“Which one is it?” Clone asked.
Jade looked at the orange-ish powder and shrugged her shoulders. “Dunno. Let’s see.” She grabbed a good bunch of the powder in her hand and then tossed it over Clone’s head, letting it rain down on her. “Feel any different?”
Clone stood there for a few moments, brushing the dust off her shoulders. “No. Do I look different?”
Jade shook her head. “No, still the same.”
Clone made a sigh and scratched at her head, and scratched again, and again, and…
“My head itches.” She suddenly said. When she looked at Jade, she saw here eyes were a little wide.
“Wow.” Was all she said.
Confused, Clone felt around the top of her head, and found that her hair felt thicker, and when she brushed her fingers through it, she found that it had gotten longer. Down to her waist, in fact. Clone brushed her hair in amazement, feeling the new long locks.
“Oh wow! This it cool!” Clone smiled and looked to Jade. “Does it look good?”
Jade nodded her head. “Really good!” She then looked down at the bowl in her hands. “Maybe I should too… Nah.” She sat the bowl down and picked up another. “If that one was the hair one, this one should be the skin one.” She grabbed a wad of the copper-ish colored powder and once more tossed it over Clone and stood back to watch.
Like the same with the hair powder, Clone soon stated that she itched, and slowly her light skin started to turn, and stopped once it was a tanned light brown. The two of them looked at the changes, and Jade had to admit that Clone looked actually quite exotic with the new shade.
“It’s really pretty.” Jade stated.
Clone agreed, looking all over herself. “Wow. This is really nice. I’m so glad we decided to do this.” She turned to the two vials of potion left on the table. “Umm, which is which?”
Jade thought on this. “I think the yellow stuff was the voice changer, and the pink stuff was for your eyes.”
Clone nodded and picked up the pink vial. “Well, here we go.”
Before she could down the substance, Jade stopped her. “Wait. I have had experience when it came to drinkable potions. It might taste bad.”
Clone looked down at the pink stuff. “Might as well get it over with.” And she drank down the liquid. After a brief second, her face suddenly scrunched up and she shivered. “GAH! It’s so sour!”
“Told ya!” Jade couldn’t help but chuckle at Clone’s face.
When the sourness cleared up, Clone coughed a few times and cleared her throat. “It tasted like spicy bubblegum, and then that sour after taste.” She looked over to Jade. “Was it that bad with you?”
Jade didn’t answer right away. Either the potion worked too well, or they made a mistake in the concoction, but Clone’s once hazel eyes were now the brightest and contrast green Jade has ever seen. Confused why Jade was looking at her like that, she turned to look at a small mirror that sat on the table and saw her new change.
“Oh my.” Clone blinked a few times. “That’s…different.”
“Do you feel anything different?” Jade asked.
Clone shook her head. “No.” But after a few seconds, Jade noticed that she was trying to pull the front of her shirt down over her bare midriff once more. “I’m getting chilly though.”
“I got some long shirt I sleep in upstairs. You could wear one.” Jade told her, and headed out of the room. She headed up to the guest room to look for a shirt, unaware of what is going on down stairs.
Clone glanced over to the book that lied open on the table; Tohru’s notes. Absent mindedly, she flipped through the pages, skimming past the words and just reading what Tohru had written down. When she got closer to the back of the book, Clone noticed that Tohru started to drift from the list of his own spells, to a sort of pseudo-journal. He stated in these notes that he had tried many of these spells on many of the nearby alley cats, and was actually very pleased by their conclusions.
One of his greatest triumphs, however, was the improved copying spell with the new finishing charm, and how he was able to alter it based on his studies with the talismans, the tiger talisman in particular. What if he could make a copy that was nicer than the original, or meaner, or even smarter or less?
The result was the successful altered copy of a rather disgruntled tom cat he came across one day. The copy, rather being very spiteful and reclusive, was very friendly and affectionate. He studied this result for a few hours, and soon made a very odd discovery.
The improved copying spell itself is pretty normal in some standers, but once altered with personality traits, he learned that the spell suddenly has a rather peculiar flaw. Not so much as a flaw, but still a rather odd outcome. The copy, he learned, will slowly develop a personality and identity of its own. The altered cat copy started off at a friendly and affection cat, but as the hours went by, it started to show different personality traits that were not in the original alteration. It started to stare excessively into space, just staring at anything. It developed an odd habit on perching itself on Tohru’s shoulder and reading whatever it was he was writing down. He tried this same experiment on another cat, with the same altered copying spell, thinking he would get a similar result. After an hour, the altered copy started to have a limitless pool of energy, contently running around the alley, jumping up and down everything, talking other cat and running away from them.
It came to a conclusion to Tohru that the copy, no matter what it is, would start to develop a new personality, and should be getting rid of before the one hour mark. But it also states that sometimes the mark varies, from more than an hour, to a few minutes. After that conclusion Tohru thought it was best to scrap this spell, but he couldn’t bring himself to do so. It even revealed that he even used the same copying spell on himself when no one was around to help clean the library.
It was very odd that Tohru would so such a thing, but given the state that this library is in most of the time, many would probably understand. But clones getting their own personality? That’s odd. She skimped through the pages some more, and when she turned one page, a scrap of paper fell out and to the ground. She looked at it for a few moments, curious why on it were the words “Please Throw Away”.
She closed the notebook and knelt down and picked up the paper, unfolding it to see it was another spell. No, an “Experiment”. Tohru had been messing around with some potions one day, trying to find something that would be useful, when he stumbled upon a very odd mixture that has no use to him, or anyone to that matter.
Clone stared at the page, and for the longest of times, she read the page over and over again, at the notes Tohru had written down, the effect of the spell, and the mixture of the potion. And after some time, an almost evil smile started to appear on Clone’s face.
“I couldn’t find a tall shirt, but I guess you could wear one of my sleeping shirts.” Jade wondered into the library with the shirt in hand, and saw that Clone had an odd look on her face. “Is everything okay?”
Clone nodded her head. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
Jade nodded her head and turned around to set the shirt down on a table, unbeknownst to her of the copy slipping a piece of paper into her back pocket.
