----------
And there was the crux of his entire problem. They had lived together as brothers for years. They had adventures and lived their lives relying on one another in circumstances that could have destroyed most brotherly relationships. And, being so very different in personality and even physically, they very probably should have grown apart as they’d grown older, but they hadn’t.
But, the entire truth of the matter was, he wasn’t Jonny’s brother, no matter how long they knew each other, and the only blood they were tied by was what had been spilled in the others’ name. No, what they were, was brothers-in-arms, warrior brothers, and that was pretty much what they’d always be.
Hadji knew he was handsome; enough people, male and female, had told him that, though his looks were almost always the last thing on his mind, much more into transcendentally transforming his inner mind than his outer body was he. He also was a prince, and so many people had showered him with empty flattery that he had learned to disregard any and all references to his physical attractiveness.
But, to have your oldest and best friend, the one person you knew as the closest thing to a brother one was ever going to have, tell him he was attractive enough for him to want to bed, well, that had been somewhat frightening to say the least. Frightening, actually, because Hadji knew, with everything that was in him, that Jonny had meant what he had said.
He knew that, because Jonny had nothing to gain by his declaration, and everything to lose. It had been a gamble that Jonny had taken, even if it were in the heat of anger, and Hadji swallowed the suddenly painful lump in his throat as he suddenly realized that if had been a gamble that Jonny had lost -- four times over and all at once.
And if it hadn’t disturbed his attempt at meditation, Hadji would have beaten his head against the table he sat on.
Hadji had always prided himself on the openness of his mind. He was proud of how developed his senses were, and he was constantly getting praised for his willingness to accept new ideas. Yet, the one time when he had needed that open-mindedness, the one time someone else had needed him to be able to accept a new concept; he had run, just about screaming, away from it.
Mentally, he hung his head.
The hard, painful truth of it all was that he hadn’t even run away from the embarrassment of his best male friend, his brother, saying he had wanted him in a physical capacity. No, he had run from the fact that it had done the exact opposite of what they had all thought. Jonny’s declaration hadn’t disgusted him, as he, and everyone had assumed.
No, it had actually intrigued him . . . and had given him almost a kind of intoxicating, compelling jolt to think that someone like Jonny -- attractive, athletic, courageous, wealthy, generous to a fault, Jonny -- would think he was physically appealing. And the fact that he enjoyed, was flattered by, and indeed, given enough time, were he any other kind of being, could have used Jonny’s attraction to him to get almost anything from him, was what had actually disgusted and frightened him the most.
He had run from his own feelings, not Jonny’s, and it had taken something like this: the explosion, the blood, and the scream of absolute soul-wrenching devastation, to make him see what he had done. He had run away from his best friend, his brother, his brother-in-arms, at the one moment that Jonny had needed him to be there for him the most.
Yet, he had been granted a second chance to fix all of that.
Jonny needed him again, and this time, he was not about to abandon him. If -- no -- when he found him, he was going to face his fears, his prejudices, head-on, and talk to his friend and tell him how very sorry he was for abandoning him in the first place.
He found his center easily after that decision, and once more colors swirled around him as he concentrated on Jonny with the almost overwhelming need to find him.
After a moment, he had the distinct feeling that he was moving, and he went with it. Faster and faster he sped, and the swirling colors solidified into a definite picture, complete with a swirling, blizzard-like snow.
