Repression and Repercussions
Chapter 10
Jane stared at the easel before her as she considered the raging emotions she felt inside. If it hadn’t been so late at night she would have gone running to work things out, but for now painting helped focus her mind. First came the shock and anger that Daria’s aunt had suggested that she would purposely hurt Daria; the very idea was simply ludicrous. Wasn’t it? Sure she had hurt her friend before, but it was never intentional, or maybe that’s what Amy had meant. Amy had said her friend hadn’t wanted to hurt her, but she had. Amy was just trying to protect Daria from the pain she had felt when her friend had abandoned her after their relationship fell apart.
Feeling that she had that part settled for now, she began working on the next piece of the puzzle. Amy had suggested that Daria might need her to fill the role of lover. Daria knew that Jane was accepting of that life practice, but didn’t join in. It wasn’t as if she went around kissing every girl in sight, even if a few had propositioned her, and Amy had kissed her so tenderly that she could still feel the tingling on her lips. Shaking her head she sighed and lowered her paint brush. She knew that she was straight, even after that kiss, but she couldn’t help and wonder what it’d be like having Daria kiss her. Less experienced but more needy most likely. Daria would also be a very loyal, if not obsessive girlfriend. But the thought of being intimate with her best friend scared her for some reason, was it the thought of losing that last shred of a normal life that she had clung to? No, it was something else. Picking up the paint brush again she resumed painting on the canvas in silent thought.
That was another thing she had to think through, Amy’s kiss. She had never met the older female before, but had almost wanted to wrap her arms around Amy and hold her close. Could it have been an extension of the parental love that she sought in Daria? Could it just be that simple? There was something missing from that part of the picture, something that she knew that she should see but just couldn’t. Daria would know if it didn’t involve her directly, and Tom wasn’t the right person to ask about this. They were on such rocky footing with their relationship as is; this would only serve to make things worse.
Frowning, she reflected on her feelings for Tom. She knew that his eyes were wandering, and that Daria had been caught in his sights more than once. The first time had driven her mad until she nearly leaped on Daria, accusing her of trying to steal Tom from her. This wasn’t a healthy relationship, not in the least, but could she just leave? It would probably be for the best, before Tom decides he’s done with her, and just takes off, or worse, cheats on her. Sighing she knew that, come tomorrow, she would have to tell Tom that she was breaking up with him, and tell Daria about it. Taking a step back she smiled as a sense of accomplishment filled her, knowing that she had made progress in her life. Looking over the painting she froze and felt the paint brush fall from her fingers to the stained carpet. There before her was herself and Daria sitting on the couch, looking at them from the front. It was beautiful and intimate, and yet at the same time it felt almost like it was only the beginning of something. Daria’s arms were wrapped about Jane’s shoulders leaning the taller girl against her shoulder, eyes closed and mouth open in a silent whisper of comfort. Jane’s eyes were closed as her lip curled into a simple pleased smile, almost like she just wanted to stay in that embrace forever more. They were close and yet there was a slight separation between the two and in the lower right corner was painted the simple words, ‘Mother of the Heart’. It was such a striking image that she couldn’t tear her eyes away from it, something about it spoke volumes about things left unspoken between the two friends. Jane’s need for support, Daria’s need for understanding, both that had gone unsaid, save for subtle body language, seemed to scream from the page.
Turning away from the painting Jane found her eyes drawn to the phone lying by her bed. Should she call Daria and talk to her about it? Would Amy be the better choice to talk to? What was she supposed to do now? Sitting down on her bed she sighed and lowered her head into her hands. There must be something more she could do then to sit around watching her best friend unravel.
Picking up the phone she looked at the number pad silently in thought. She knew that Trent was over at Jesse’s practicing, and that no one else was home, so the phone was hers to use as she pleased. The sudden ringing noise from the handset in her hands made her jump in surprise before checking the caller id. It was an unknown number, and by the looks of it, international. With a sigh she pressed the answer button after the second ring ended it, and answered. “Casa Lane, this is Jane speaking.”
“Jane? It’s Penny. I just got into Peru, and was wondering how life was back at the old homestead. How are you holding out?”
Jane sighed and picked up a pin from the wall by her bed and started walking towards her closet. “I’m doing alright, but a lot has been happening. Where in Peru are you?” Jane asked continuing the standard game that the Lanes played whenever anyone called, answer a question and then immediately ask one.
“I’m in the port city of Talara, just stopping for some supplies before heading to the jungle tribes; might even take a job to help translate for the natives and the government officials. You sound bothered about something, what’s wrong?”
Jane opened her closet door and looked at the world map for a moment before sticking the push pin into it on the city of Talara in Peru. “I said I’m fine Penny, but I’m thinking about a lot of things that just aren’t sitting right with me. Have you found a new parrot to replace Chiquto yet?”
“No, I’m still kinda mad that he just took off like that, but I suppose after suffering though some of our adventures, he'd had had enough. How’s your friend Daria?”
Jane looped a string around the new pin from one in the middle of Nicaragua as she thought on her answer. “She has a lot on her plate right now, and we’re working through our issues together. How long are you going to be in Peru?”
“Couple months, unless the job goes through, and then it’s upwards of a year and a half. Are the issues you’re dealing with that you two are starting to date, or are you still faking with that Tom fellow?”
Jane froze in mid-turn at Penny’s suggestion. “WHAT?! I am not a lesbian sister dear; I don’t even know where you might get that idea from.”
“Uh… seems I was right about the two of you having relationship issues, as for being a lesbian. Just look at the way you two are acting, you may not be homosexual, but you are very much in love with each other. Why deny it?”
Jane shook her head in disbelief. Was her sister really suggesting what it sounded like? “Maybe because it’s a lie Penny, I’m not in love with Daria, end of story. Anything to pass onto the others, or about the others I should know?”
“Yeah, I talked with dad for a few hours in Ocotal in Nicaragua, said he was on his way south to Ushuala in Argentina for some penguin pictures; might even head all the way to Antarctica again. Jane, can you promise me that you won’t deny yourself happiness for fear of what everyone else will think? Please?”
Jane paused again hearing the pleading tone in her sister’s voice before nodding. “Yeah Penny, I’ll promise you that. Thanks for calling.”
“No problem Jane, maybe I’ll get a satellite phone one of these days, or old army surplus radio phones. Those things are built rugged, and I could keep in contact even out in the middle of nowhere. Bye Jane, keep the home fires burning.”
Jane smirked as she looked at the Lane family travels map. “Just not in any rooms without a fireplace, right?”
“Right.”
Hanging up the phone Jane sighed and looked at the hundreds of pins and strings strung about on the map. With a smirk she noted that she might have to get one of the USA for Summer’s family itself, and also that someone should eventually make it down to Australia one of these years. Maybe Daria would like to go with her to be the first Lanes in Australia.
Blinking, Jane realized what she had just thought; she and Daria traveling together as Lanes. Thinking about it again she realized that she hadn’t meant it even as sisters, but as the two of them together as a couple. Shaking her head, she wrote it off as Penny putting thoughts in her head again and went over to her bed, to try and sleep off the uneasy feeling she was having about not calling Daria tonight. As she fell into her bed, the last thing she saw before going to sleep was the painting she had just completed, and wondered if that could be made permanent shortly before the oblivion of her dreams overtook her.
