Winter ch 10
She grinned remembering her sensei’s reaction when she hugged him after he presented her with it. The boys actually seemed to be proud of her. She grinned she knew about the party tonight, though she had let them think she didn’t. So many things had changed in her life, gone were the dresses permantely. In their place tank tops and cutoffs. She had even darkened a little, she thought smiling at her image in the mirror. Her father wouldn’t even recognize her now.
He would probably blame the whole thing on Satan anyway. Giving her a lecture about how her friends were cohorts of the devil and evil. Well if this was evil, she whispered to herself then I gladly embrace the dark. Gone forever was the cringing girl child she had once been. In her place was a confident woman. Yes she was still a bit naïve, maybe a little too trusting. She trusted the Dreadnoks, even though they warned her not too. She trusted Zartan and his family as well, of course that cause she secretly wanted to be part of it.
She paused maybe trust wasn’t really the right word for what she felt for Zartan. She smiled remembering what she had once been, before she began her training. She remembered when she had first started that training. He was trying to teach her to fight, and he had hurt her feelings more than once. When he asked her to hit him, at first she thought it unthinkable. So he teased her to anger and she let him have it. He laughed at her, when she had indeed punched him.
Of course that’s because it was the weak punch of a child, matter of fact she even hurt her hand. He didn’t even feel it, it had made her so angry she just turned around and walked away. He had hit her in the back, knocking her face first into the dirt. “Never turn your back on an enemy,” he yelled at her as she turned over to lie on her back and look up at him.
The other Dreadnoks had told her that Zartan hadn’t wanted to teach her. She wondered about that, enough to finally ask why. His response had startled her, and her return answer had caught him equally off guard. He was afraid that he would hurt her, and he didn’t comfortable with that. She nodded and answered in turn with a question. How would he feel if someone else hurt her because she didn’t know how to defend herself? Then she left him alone to think about it.
He had walked out to watch her training like he always did .The Dreadnoks were teaching her some moves, and showing her all wrong. He just had to say something “no, no, no” he chided, “you knee a man like this,” he said demonstrating on Ripper.Ripper went down and everyone laughed at him, poor Ripper. “Now you try,” Zartan said. The guys stopped laughing ut oh, who was she gonna practice on. She could almost read their thoughts by their expressions.
Zandar choose the wrong time to pop up and ask what was going on. “Aw we’re just teaching Winter to fight” answered Torch “oh really” Zandar said sauntering over to her “and just what are they teaching you honey” She brought her leg up quickly just as Zartan had just shown her. Right between Zandar’ legs “this” she answered after she connected. Zandar’s eyes rolled back in his head and he collapsed clutching himself in the fetal position.
“Very beautifully done” said Zartan through tears of laughter. “You walked right into that one, mate” said Ripper just now uncurling, but still on the floor. “Yeah well done,” gasped Zandar through clenched teeth. “Thanks for the warning, bro” hissed Zandar to Zartan. “Your welcome, lil bro” Answered Zartan sarcastically. Her new family certainately had an interesting sense of humor. Better than none she thought, like my father and his lackeys. If your going to do something enjoy it, or don’t do it at all Torch had told her once. He actually made sense, odd that coming from a guy who lit his cigarettes with a blowtorch.
Today was her first mission for Cobra. They would be breaking into the lab a Jentech. They weren’t actually stealing, since Jentech had sold them the item they were after. Of course after they realized who bought it they refused to deliver, even though they had accepted payment already. Technically the device belonged to them. The Dreadnoks were given the task of retrieving it. Zarana had already gone in a week earlier posing as an employee. The real employee she was replacing was Cobra’s guest. Zarana had gotten them the codes and everything else they needed to just walk in and take it. Winter waited patiently beside Zartan, she had called shotgun earlier much to the pissing and moaning of the others. Other than that everyone was in a good mood.
