Chapter 10- Ending.
Valentines Day.
The day was bright and sunny, there wasn't a cloud to be seen for miles. For a Febuary, it was surprisingly warm. Not T-shirt weather, but almost.
Kimi saw Matthew a few yards ahead, already the fake smile was spreading on her face. Hollywood would be proud.
Matthew saw her coming and smiled himself. Just as planned and rehersed the couple hugged each other and exchanged a quick kiss.
"Great to see you, honey." She said happily. "Can I have a word?"
Matthew glanced at the four friends that he had been talking to and nodded his head.
"Be right back you guys." She smiled and walked a few yards away to a private corner with Kimi.
"Are you ready for tonight?" she asked him quietly, taking a careful glance back at his friends in case any of them were trying to over hear them. Matthew nodded and sat down on a bench. Kimi saw a serious expression on his face and sat down by his side.
"I'm all prepared, got a great looking tux and everything. I'll pick you up at seven ok? My uncle runs a limo for hire buisness, he gave me a great deal."
Kimi smiled and nodded. Who could turn down a limo ride.
"Seven on the dot, I'll be ready." She said politely, she was still concerned by his serious expression. "What's wrong?" Matthew shook his head.
"It's nothing." He said quietly, but Kimi wasn't fooled.
"Talk." She demanded seriously. Matthew looked down at the ground for a moment before speaking in a quiet, nervous voice.
"After this dance, I think we should break up. The rumours have all stopped and I'm just not really that sure that we need to be together anymore. I don't want to keep up an act anymore."
Kimi fell into a deep silence. Matthew was right, she knew they couldn't keep the act up forever, but she had actually begun to enjoy herself. meeting Matthew every morning to discuss how they were going to fool people that day.
"Kimi?" He asked uncertainly. Kimi snapped out of her trance and smiled.
"I kind of knew that it wouldn't last forever. But it's been fun."
"That's true." He agreed. "We can still have fun tonight." He got to his feet. "See you at seven ok?"
"See you at seven." she called back as he moved off.
******************************
The rest of the day went quietly and quickly. Kimi shared talk over lunch with Suzy who, after hearing that Lill wanted to go into the woods for a nude camping trip said 'I'll give it some thought but no promises. I like to help my friends be happy, but I have my limits.'
The school was let out a half hour early so that the gym could be prepared in time for the dance.
On the school bus, Chucky sat by her side.
"Are you looking forward to the dance tonight?" He asked with an odd expression on his face that made Kimi suspicious.
"What are you hiding?" She demanded. Chuckie began to perspire and became fidgety, something he always did when nervous.
"Nothing." He said in a panicky voice. Kimi stared at him intensly.
"You couldn't ever hide anything from me Chuckie. Spill it."
Chuckie fidgited and wiped his forehead and tried to leave his seat. Kimi grabbed his ear and dragged him back down. He yelled out loudly and people turned to stare at them, but Kimi didn't care.
"Spill it Charlie." She demanded. It was serious when she used his real name.
"All right." He yelled. Kimi let go of his ear, but kept her hand close to grab him again.
"Mom and dad, they're worried about you. As soon as you get home their going to have a 'long talk'."
Kimi sighed, she had been expecting this. First she comes out as gay, the next day she gets together with a boy, no wonder her parents were concerned.
"That's all?" She asked quietly. Chuckie nodded.
"They didn't want you to know, so they could catch you off guard or soemthing like that."
The bus pulled up to their stop and the two siblings departed. Chuckie walked a couple of paces behind Kimi as they set off toward home. He fought to hide a smile, she had suspected nothing.
When Kimi got indoors there was an instant call from the kitchen.
"Kimi? Can we talk to you?" her mothers voice cried. Chuckie gave Kimi an encouraging look.
"Good luck." He said quietly and climbed up the stairs and left her.
Kimi sighed and walked into the kitchen. Both of her parents were sitting at the table and wore grim expressions. She sat down in one of the empty seats and prepared herself for what she knew lay ahead.
"Yes?" She asked curiously. Her mother started the conversation.
"Kimi. We are a little concerned about you lately. You have been acting a little strange."
"This is about Matthew isn't it?" She asked. Her parents exchanged a look and her dad started talking.
"If that's his name then yes." He said in his nasley voice. "You see we are a little confused. First you tell us you are gay, and we're fine with that, no problem. But then you start going out with this boy, we are just a little confused?"
Kimi sighed and nodded her head.
"It's complicated, but not to worry, it's over between him and me. After tonight, we're finished." She climbed to her feet. "Now if you excuse me, I have about three hours to get ready for the dance, I'll have to rush a bit but I think I'll make it." She went off leaving her parents more confused than before she talked to them. "And I'm still gay." She called back to them as she climbed the stairs.
******************************
First a shower, then everything else would follow.
Kimi locked herself into the bathroom and jumped under the torrent of hot water and grabbed some body wash cream to lather up her body. With nothing but the sound of the water hitting her ears Kimi grew quickly bored and turned to the radio hanging on the wall. Flicking it on there was a few seconds of static and then a voice fizzled to life.
"If you've just tuned in, happy Valentines Day to all of you. Next up, a track for all you lovers out there. A great classic and a personal favorite of mine. Diana Ross with I'm coming Out.
*I'm coming out, I'm coming out.*
*I'm coming out.*
*I want the world to know, got to let it show.*
*I'm coming out.*
*I want the world to know, got to let it show.*
*There's a new me coming out.*
*And I just have to live, I just wanna give.*
*I'm completely positive.*
*I think this time around.*
*I am gonna do it, like you never knew it.*
*Ooh, I'll make it through.*
*The time has come for me to break out of the shell.*
*I have to shout, that I am coming out.*
"Weird." Kimi clicked off the radio and laughed nervously. That was a little too close to home for comfort. She grabed the shampoo and started to lather her hair. Her good mood was still undying. She had a dance and a date to look forward to and a beautiful dress that she could wear. She would be the envy of everyone in that dress, she could feel it.
*Sally May was a preacher's girl*
*And when her daddy would visit she'd come along.*
*When they gathered 'round and started talkin'*
*That's when Sally would take me walkin'*
*Out through the backyard we'd go walkin'*
*Then she'd look into my eyes,*
*Lord knows to my surprise.*
*The only one who could ever reach me,*
*Was the daughter of a preacher man.*
*The only girl who could ever teach me,*
*Was the daughter of a precher man.*
*Yes she was, she was, ooh yes she was.*
Kimi couldn't sing anymore, she was laughing too hard at her improvised song rewrite. It didn't sound too bad, at least to her.
Kimi finished showering and went to her room to finish getting ready.
On her bed was a familiar looking device. Her laptop, only slightly different. The screen part of the computer was lighter, cleaner.
"Chuckie." She whispered gratefully.
Kimi had accidently smashed the screen of her about a week ago after a fight with Suzy. Chuckie had promised to get the screen repaird but at the time Kimi hadn't held out much hope. Apparently he had been able to keep that promise.
She would try it out later, now she had to finish getting read, only two and a half hours to go and she had her hair to style, makeup to put on and a million other small things that would make her look just right for the evening.
********************************
Kimi was just sliding on the silver, elbow length gloves that came with her dress, the last of her outfit, when her mothers voice yelled to her from downstairs.
"KIMI. YOUR DATE IS HERE."
Kimi glanced at the clock by her bed. Five minutes to seven o'clock, Matthew was early, she liked that.
"COMING." She called back and grabbed a small silver bag, very small. It was just big enough to hold her cellphone and a hanker chief.
Kimi decended the stairs slowly, just like they do in the movies.
"I'm here. Where's that man of mine?" She asked giggling.
Suzy stepped out of the living room and Kimi froze on the bottom step.
Suzy was wearing a Red dress with gloves that fitted over her hands. Her hair was tied up, held together with a red ribbon. It all matched her dark skinned complexion so perfectly that Kimi almost felt like bursting into tears, but she was too surprised to do that at the moment.
In the kitchen, Kimi could just hear a song on the radio.
*It's the end of the world as we know it.*
*It's the end of the world as we know it.*
*It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.*
This evening was getting weirder by the second.
"Hi Kimi." She said with a bright smile on her face. Kimi's jaw dropped and she had to grip onto the banister to support herself as her knees went weak.
"What? What are you doing here?" She asked in a shaky voice.
Suzy stepped forward and held up a clear plastic box with a small white orchid inside, a corsage. Kimi stared at it dumbfounded as if someone had handed her a check for a million dollars, she just couldn't find the ability to believe it was real.
"What?" She asked quietly. Suzy smiled and opened the small box and took out the flower and tied it to Kimi's wrist. Kimi let her do this, her limbs were as loyal as a puppets. It was only when Suzy took a step bak to admire the white flower on Kimi's wrist that Kimi herself snapped bak to reality.
"What are you doing here? Where's Matthew?"
Suzy smiled slyly.
"Matthew can't make it, I'm your date tonight."
This time Kimi's legs really gave way and she fell hard onto the stairs. A thudding pain rammed itself up her spine and that brought her mind into sharp clarity.
"What?" She still found herself unable to ask anything more. Suzy knelt down infront of Kimi, took her hands and helped her to her feet.
"You've been the victim of a conspiracy. A few days ago I ran into Matt at the mall, shopping for his tux. I convinced him to let me by your date for tonight. HE would keep it a secret from you and I think he did a good job."
Kimi felt like her brain had shut down, she wanted to pinch herself to make sure all of this wasn't a dream.
"I don't have a carsage for you." She muttered stupidly. She could feel her brain starting to work again, but it was slow going.
There was a cough to ther left and Chuckie seemed to appear from nowhere. He was dressed in a tux of his own and his hair was combed neatly, he looked quite presntable. In his hand was a white orchid in a clear plastic box.
"Suzy called a couple of days ago, asked me to buy one of these for her. She knew that you wouldn't have one handy." He put the box into Kimi's hand and glanced at his watch.
"I have to go, I'm getting a ride from Tommy." He walked out of the door.
"I don't get this." Said Kimi when he'd gone. "Why are you here?"
Suzy laughed.
"You have been so brave through all of this Kimi. Telling everyone all at once. Helping Matthew keep his secret, even supporting Lill when she told you her little inclination. I treated you badly until Matt explained everything and I think for all of that, you deserve something in return. This is it. I'm going to be your date for the evening."
Kimi opned the corsage box and Suzy held up her arm while Kimi strapped it to her.
"But what about what people will think?" She asked with unease. Suzy kept smiling and shrugged her shoulders.
"Most people will think that we're just two friends going to a dance together. Those that think it's something more…to hell with them. We're there to have a good time, who cares what they think?"
Kimi looked at Suzy and was unsure whether she actually believed her words or not. Was Suzy honestly saying that she didn't care if people thought she was gay? Was she herself, ready for people to think that about her?
"Bravery isn't determined by a lack of fear, but what you do in spite of the fear. One of my mothers sayings." Suzy said quietly. She took Kimi's hand, as soon as Suzy gripped her, her heart went racing and her head light.
"Come on, there should be a limo waiting out front. Matthew's uncle gave us a great deal."
A free limo ride. Kimi found her resistance had mysteriously gone on vacation and she allowed herself to be led out of her house toward the black luxury car. The driver was wearing a grey uniform with matching cap and a fake smile. He climbed out of the front seat and rushed to the back and opened the door for them.
"Ladies." He said politely. Kimi and Suzy dived into the limo.
"Well, come on, lets go." Suzy ordered to the driver. He smiled and nodded politely and closed the door for them.
*********************************
The party was well underway by the time the limo pulled up to the front of the school. There were several pupils sitting outside the gym, talking, laughing and enjoying the night. Teacher were on the prowl, looking in the bushes and shadows for any pupils getting carried away.
A few people stopped to stare as the limo pulled up. The driver jumped out of the front and walked swiftly to the back and opened the door for Kimi and Suzy.
They stepped out and Kimi shivered at the chill of the night air. Perhaps she should have been shopping for a jacket when she bought the dress. Suzy stood by her side and took her hand. Suddenly, despite the cold, Kimi started to perspire and her heart started to race.
"Come on." Said Suzy. "Let's get inside, get warm and get dancing."
They walked past all the couples and pushed the open the double doors of the gym. The music blared loudly and there were about a dozen couples on the dance floor, a dozen more sat on seats set around the edge of the room, all of them had glasses of fruit punch and small plates of finger food.
*Like a virgin, with your heartbeat next to mine.*
*Whoa, whoa, whoa.*
*You're so fine and you're mine.*
*I'll be yours 'til the end of time.*
*'Cause you made me feel,*
*Yeah you made me feel,*
*I've nothing to hide.*
*Like a virgin, touched for the very first time.*
*Like a virgin, with your heartbeat next to mine.*
*Like a virgin, ooh, like a virgin.*
*Feels so good inside.*
*When you hold me and your heart beats and you love me.*
The song came to an end while Suzy went to the punch bowl and got Kimi a drink. Angelica came over with a snide look on her face.
"So?" She asked teasingly. "Are you and the dyke an item now or what?"
Suzy sighed angrily.
"Leave it Angelica. Kimi and I are just two friends enjoying a night out."
"At a romantic formal dance on Valantines Day? You're not fooling anyone. Admit it, you're a couple aren't you?"
"Whats this?" Asked a mean sounding ladies voice. Suzy turned, Savannah, one of Angelica's so-called friends and from the look of her face, she had heard every word.
"Kimi Finster and Suzy Carmichael are an item?" she walked off with a wide smile on her face toward a group of girls who were obviously gossiping while their 'dates' orbited around them.
Suzy glared at Angelica.
"You get over there and do some damage control. Now."
Angelica looked like she was going to laugh, but she caught the look on Suzy's face and after a few seconds nodded her head fearfully.
"I'll see what I can do. No promises. BE prepared for a difficult night."
As suzy wandered back toward Kimi, cups of punch in her hands, the dj started on another track.
"Okay, here's one to set the tone of the evening. Get on the dance floor and get moving to this little beauty."
Suzy handed Kimi her paper cup. Kimi glanced past Suzy to Angelica, who was talking frantically to a group of the popular girls.
"Whats that all about?" She asked Suzy but Suzy just shook her head.
*Oh yeah.*
*Like a movie scene, in the sweetest dream,*
*I pictured us together,*
*Now to feel your lips, on my fingertips.*
*Got to say is even better,*
*Than I ever thought it could possibly be.*
*It's perfect, it's passion, it's setting me free.
*From all of my sadness, the tears that I've cried.*
*I have spent all of my life.*
"A bit of classic J-lo. Cool." Said Suzy to herself. She had thought this entire dance would be nothing but cheesy love songs from the seventies and eighties.
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*When you would be here in my arms.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*I've dreamed of this night for so long.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh, oh.*
Kimi was again a little freaked by how close the songs seemed to relate to her life at the moment. She looked at Suzy, but saw by the look on her face that she wasn't making the same connection.
Kimi drained her punch cup and grabbed Suzy by the hand.
"Lets dance. I didn't come here to stand around." She demanded. Suzy drank a little of her punch, put the cup on a nearby table and nodded.
*Tender words you say, take my breath away.*
*Love me now and leave me never.*
*Found a sacred place, lost in your embrace.*
*I wanna stay in this forever.*
*I think of the day when the sun used to set.*
*On my empty heart, all alone in my bed.*
*Tossing and turning, emotions were strong.*
*I knew I had to hold on.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*When you would be here in my arms.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*I've dreamed of this night for so long.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*When you would be here in my arms.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*I've dreamed of this night for so long.*
*Oh, oh, oh, Oh, oh, oh, Oh, oh, oh.*
*Gone are the days when the sun used to set.*
*On my empty heart, all alone in my bed.*
*Tossing and turning, emotions were strong.*
*I knew I had to hold on.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*When you would be here in my arms.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*I've dreamed of this night for so long.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*When you would be here in my arms.*
*Waiting for tonight, oh,*
*I've dreamed of this night for so long.*
Kimi was in heaven. Dancing with Suzy, so close she could smell the girls perfume. No one else existed, nothing else mattered, only this moment was important.
It was only as the music died down that Kimi became aware of the lack of other dancers on the floor. Even those dancing sent glances toward her and Suzy. Most people were standing or sitting on the sidelines and while this could be dismissed as people resting, or not wanting to dance because of crappy songs, the stares were undenyable. Most peoples eyes were fixed on her and Suzy, and a few people were exchanging whipsers and laughs.
"A great song, a great song. Now, this next one has been dedicated to Suzy Carmichael and Kimi Finster. Who, I'm told, have declared themselves a couple tonight. Here you go, brave girls."
*The power of love is a curious thing.*
*Make a one man weep make another man sing.*
*Change a hawk to a little white dove.*
*More than a feeling that's the power of love.*
Kimi stopped and stared at Suzy in stone silence. She could feel her face growing hot with embarressment. Even over the loud music, she could hear everyone in the gym laughing at her.
She turned away from Suzy and ran toward the door.
"Kimi." Suzy yelled, chasing after her.
Kimi burst outside just as Suzy grabbed her arm.
"Kimi, wait." Suzy called. Kimi pulled her grip loose.
"They know. I knew this would happen. I should have known better than to come here with you tonight. They all know."
"Who cares what they think?" Cried Suzy. "We both came here tonight to have a good time. Not worry what people say." She took Kimi's hand and this time her grip was not shrugged off.
"We know the truth and that's all that matters. Let them talk, none of it's true. They'll see that soon enough. This time next week they'll all have something else to chat over." She glanced back at the gym.
"Lets go back and just enjoy ourselves. If you back down from what you know is right, just because of pressure from others, could you really live with yourself? More of my mothers sayings."
Kimi sighed and smiled, she couldn't stay angry at Suzy. She nodded her head and allowed herself to be led back into the gym.
*Don't take money don't take fame.*
*Don't need no credit card to ride this train.*
*Tougher than diamonds and stronger than steel.*
*You won't feel nothin' 'til you feel.*
*You feel the power just feel the power of love.*
*That's the power that's the power of love.*
*You feel the power of love.*
*You feel the power of love.*
*You feel the power of love.*
There were more stares, giggles and whispers. Kimi began to feel tense again, but she held Suzy's hand tightly and the tightness in her chest seemed to loosen off.
Angelica came over looking genuinely sorry for what must have been the first time in her life.
"I'm sorry Suzy. I tried, I really did. But Savannah isn't easily silenced." Suzy nodded but said nothing. Angelica got the message and backed off.
"To hell with what they think, remember?" Whispered Suzy to Kimi and she led her onto the dance floor once again.
"I'm going to take the mood down a notch right now." Called the DJ. "But thing's will pick up again before the end of the night. Here's a classic little number that everyone knows."
*When a man loves a woman,*
*Can't keep his mind on nothing else.*
*He'll change the world,*
*For a good thing he found,*
*If she is mad he can't see it.*
*She can do no wrong,*
*Turn his back on his best friend,*
*If he put her down.*
Everyone came to the floor for the slow dance. Kimi and Suzy were among the group. They gripped one set of hands and put the other on each other's hips. Kimi decided to lead.
*When a man loves a woman,*
*Spend his very last dime.*
*Tryin' to hold on to what he needs,*
*He'll give up all of his comforts,*
*And sleep out in the rain,*
*If she says that's the way it ought to be.*
*Well this man loves his woman,*
*I gave you everything I had.*
*Tryin' to hold on to your high class love,*
*Baby please don't treat me bad.*
The lights dimmed down and a disco ball struck up and sent small shafts of light slowly dancing on the walls. Kimi pulled herself a little closer to Suzy, so close that she could smell Suzi's perfume again and felt the softness of her skin and the gentleness of her touch. Kimi had dreamed of this moment a thousand times, but the imagination didn't compare to the real thing, not by a long shot.
*When a man loves a woman,*
*Down deep in his soul.*
*She can bring him such misery,*
*If she plays him for a fool,*
*He's the last one to know.*
*Lovin' eyes can never see.*
*When a man loves a woman,*
*He can do her no wrong.*
*He can never want some other girl.*
*When a man loves a woman,*
*I know exactly how he feels,*
*'Cause baby baby baby, you're my world.*
Kimi leaned in close and connected her lips with Suzy's. She felt Suzy's hot breath and soft lips. It went on only for seconds but for Kimi it was a blessed eternity.
They separated when Suzy started to gently push. Kimi understood at once that Suzy didn't want this kiss and moved back.
"I'm sorry." She whispered and broke away from her friend and ran for the door. Suzy watched her run outside and looked down the floor. She turned her head back toward the other dancers, they were so absorbed in their own romantic moments that Kimi and Suzy's incident had gone unnoticed by all but a couple of people. Suzy knew who those people were too and would threaten them to silence later.
Kimi sat on a bench gently sobbing, dabbing her eyes gently with a hanker chief, hoping she wasn't smudging her makeup, it was one thing to totally embarrass yourself for a moment, another to keep it going all night by having panda eyes.
"This seat taken?" Asked a voice behind her. A voice so familiar and sweet that Kimi could scarcely believe it was real. She turned and smiling Suzy sat down by her side.
"Your still talking to me then?" Kimi asked gloomily. Suzy grasped her friends hand gently.
"Only god and your best friend can forgive all sins." She said. Kimi smiled briefly, but it didn't last.
"More of your mothers wisdom?" She asked, Suzy shook her head.
"That's mine." She said sweetly. Kimi stared at the floor.
"I'm sorry I did that Suzy." She said, not looking at her friend. Suzy shook her head.
"It's nothing, lets just put it down to you got caught up in the moment and leave it at that."
Kimi shook her head furiously.
"But that's not what happened. I wanted to kiss you. I love you and I can't stop loving you, anymore than you can start loving me." Kimi said, blurting it out of her mouth quickly as if holding it in for a second longer would be lethal.
Suzy sighed and released Kimi's hand.
"I do love you Kimi." She said quietly. Kimi's eyes lit up for a second in hope, but that was gone in exactly two seconds.
"Just not in the way I love you, right?" She asked, Suzy nodded.
"I love you like I love my sister, or my parents. But the way I will love my boyfriend, when I get one? I'm sorry, but I can't."
Kimi sighed and nodded.
"I know. I Know." She replied in a depressed tone. Suzy placed a hand on Kimi's chin and turned the girls head to face her.
"I will always be there for you as a friend. I'm sorry that it's not in the way you want, but it's the best I can do." She spoke slowly, letting Kimi know that she wasn't trying to hurt her with these words. Kimi nodded and a faint smile spread across her lips.
"As long as your there when I need you." She said.
"Depends what you need me for." Joked Suzy. Kimi stared at her intensely for a second, but she couldn't control herself and broke out into laughter.
The two friends laughed at the joke, a laughter that was much demanded and long overdue. It felt good to be laughing again, just like the best of friends that they were. Finally the laughter faded, but the good mood stayed.
"You want to get a drink before the punch bowl is empty?" Asked Kimi, Suzy nodded and the two of them walked slowly, side by side back toward the gymnasium.
Kimi wanted to hold Suzy's hand, but dared not after Suzy's 'we can only be friends' speech. Suzy on the other hand, sensed what Kimi wanted and slid her fingers in between Kimi's and gently grasped her gloved hand.
"I'm still your date tonight." She said. "You can keep loving me all you want. But don't let it ruin your life. Promise me that you will try and find someone else you can have the same feelings for who will be able to return them."
Kimi had to think about that. She could never picture herself with anyone but Suzy. But she couldn't have Suzy and she knew that. Looking for someone else was a thought that never occurred to her. Wouldn't that just be settling for second place? She couldn't get the person she wanted so she would settle for the next best thing? That wasn't love.
But that was it, she realised, if she was in a relationship where she felt like that, then it wasn't real love. She would just have to keep searching until she found the truly special someone who made her feel just as happy as when she was with Suzy and she had the same blissful effect on them. Then she would have found true love.
"I promise." She said finally. Suzy smiled and gave Kimi a peck on the cheek.
"A reward, because you really did think about it." She said as Kimi stared at her with a confused, yet content, look on her face. "And, if it's not too personal." She began in a low voice. Suzy leaned in and spoke softly into Kimi's ear. "If you keep on kissing people like you did me, your going to have no problem finding the girl you deserve."
Laughing again, the two girls entered the gym once more. Embarrassment and fear of rumours completely forgotten. They were here to enjoy themselves, as they should have from the start.
THE END.
