Once Futura was certain that they were all fine, she asked the students on the common to leave. She gave the tray to one of them and told him to return it to the Derleth School. He nodded and took off after his friends.
“Okay, everyone go over to your statue.” They obeyed, staring in awe at the huge representations of themselves. On closer inspection, they saw that there was a large crystal in the center of the foundation of each statue. “All right,” Futura ordered. “When I say ‘now’, press hard on the big gemstone in front of you with your left hand. Except for you, Jake and Kel. Use your right hands, southpaws.”
“Futura, what’s gonna happen whe do do this?” Dana asked, tentatively placing her hand in front of the gem.
“Honestly,” she replied. “I have no idea. But the order came directly from you, so I don’t think it’s necessary to question it. Okay then, ready everyone?” She gave a cursory look to see that they were. “Five . . . four . . . three . . . two . . . one . . . now!”
They all pressed simultaneously, but instead of feeling something solid, their arms passed through the gonesones as if they were made of gelatin. The deceptively soft gems glowed brighter and brighter as they engulfed more and more of their arms. When they were all in the gems up to the elbow, they each felt a slight prick and when they pulled back their arms instinctively, they each had a needle prick on their index fingertips.
“Ow! What the fuck?” Peter complained angrily. “Why didn’t you warn us about that, Futura? I hate needles!”
Egon placed a hand on the psychologist’s shoulder to silence him and pointed up at the statue in the fountain. “Peter, look!”
Peter’s eyes followed the direction of Egon’s finger. The central fountain statue beto gto glow brightly, and then a burst of light shot out of the top to pierce through the clouds above them. Moments later, there appeared to be something descending towards them from the sky far above. As it got closer, they saw it was a group of people floating down to them. When they got even closer, they realized it was them!
Twelve copies of themselves came down out of the sky towards them, robed in the purest white, an aura of light surrounding each of them. These beings all looked to be aged about in their mid-twenties, and none of them wore glasses or had so much as a wrinkle. Even the white streak in Jessica’s hair was missing in her ethereal equivalent. They stopped descending at about three feet above the ground. Each living Ghostbuster or wife instinctively gravitatver ver to their own counterparts. Egon was the only one able to speak. “You’re us.”
The beings all started to laugh, even the one that looked like Egon. Peter’s double turned to Peter and said, “You know, he’s still Captain Obvious even now! Even after almost a thousand years in the afterlife!”
“Oh my,” Kel muttered. “You’re our ghosts!”
“No, not ghosts. Spirits,” Spirit-Ray corrected her.
“What’s the difference?” Dana asked.
“Ghosts are trapped on earth. Spirits have ascended to, well . . . I can’t really tell you.”
Spirit-Jessica turned to Futura and whispered, “Nice job with the sans memento tonics. That would’ve been a real drag.” Futura smiled at her and stealthily brushed a tear from her eye, knowing that she’d just saved her friend from spending the next thirty-five years mourning her husband prematurely. Tcoupcouple wasn’t even halfway through with the time they would live together, and they’d only be apart for six years before they’d be spending eternity as one.
Sl smi smiled apologetically at Spirit-Jessica, and she mouthed to him that it was okay. Spirit-Jake wrapped a comforting arm around his spirit wife’s shoulders. Peter noticed the gesture and said, “My God! Even in death they can’t keep their hands off each other!”
All the spirits and their living counterparts laughed, but Jake and Jessica frowned at Peter. Spirit-Kayla said, “Oh, lighten up, especially since it’s true!” Even Jake and Jessica laughed, when they saw that their spirits shrugged and nodded in agreement.
“Speaking of which, do you all still . . .” Kel began. “I mean, can you, you know . . .”
“Have sex?” Spirit-Jake asked.
“Yes,” she said, blushing furiously at having asked that.
“Mmmm . . . yes and no,” Spirit-Jessica replied. “We left our bodies behind, and physical sex is really just a means of procreation, but we certainly aren’t without our own forms of intimacy.”
“Bummer,” Peter murmured.
“Not really,” Spirit-Peter said, hugging Spirit-Dana to his side. “No one’s complaining about no satisfaction where we come from!”
“Where did you guys come from?” Eddie asked.
“We’re not allowed to tell you that,” Spirit-Eddie said. “But don’t worry, you’ll figure it out on your own. After all, you’re the ones who had the statues enchanted and placed at the academy with a DNA sequencing device inside those gems, similar to the one that was encoded into the lock on Futura’s mission folder.”
“But why?” Janine asked.
“So you could bring us here. That was your mission. And now your part of it is done. It’s up to us now.”
“I don’t understand. Why did you have us bring you here?” Kayla asked.
“For him.” Spirit-Ray pointed at Slimer.
“Me?!?” the ghost demanded in shock.
“Yes,” Spirit-Egon replied. “We knew you would be sent here after we all passed on. After hanging around for a few years, you would start to tell stories about us to the students, and it wouldn’t be long before it became a history class. After a thousand years, you would become an icon of Ghostbusting to the entire universe. That was very important for this academy, and your teachings were as important as ours. However, it was necessary for Futura to keep it from us that you were here, or we’d have rushed off to see you and not paid attention to all the details here on campus. It was absolutely tantamount that we saw everything we needed to, undistracted.”
“And now, it’s time to go, Slimer,” Spirit-Alice said. “Your work here is done, and it’s time for you to rest.”
Spirit-Winston took Slimer’s hand. “Besides, we’ve missed you these past centuries and we’re ready for you to come home.” He smirked and Spirit-Ray rolled his eyes and whispered to Futura, “He’s been a pain in the butt for a thousand years just because he was right about religion. Now we can’t tell him anything.” Futura chuckled softly as not to draw any questions as to what Spirit-Ray said. It wasn’t for them to know that definitively yet.
Egon finally broke out of his daze and asked the question that really needed asking just one more time, the one that humanity might never have had a chance to ask again. “Where, might I ask, is home?”
Spirit-Janine smiled at him, floated down to him and stroked his cheek. He was shocked to find that, unlike with ghosts, her incorporeal touch was warm and completely devoid of slime. “Don’t worry, my love. You’ll find out one day.” She looked back at Spirit-Egon and smiled.
The spirits all floated over to their living spouses and smiled at them, mimicking Janine’s gesture of stroking their cheeks. Spirit-Peter told Dana, “I told you that I would love you forever. Although we never did make it to the orchestra pit at the Met.”
Spirit-Jake said to Jessica, “I remember this moment so well. I have to say it’s much better from this end of it.”
Spirit-Alice said to Ray, “It’s nice to touch you again. Even if it’s only for a moment.”
The spirits then gathered around Slimer. “Are you ready to go now?” Spirit-Kel asked.
“Just one moment,” Slimer replied. He floated over to each of his living friends, hugging them one last time. For some reason, he hugged Peter extra long and said, “I get it now. I was proud to continue your legacy. I want you to remember that.” Peter hugged him back, clearly confused by Slimer’s words. Slimer let him go and floated up toward their spirit selves. “I love you all,” he called down to them. “Please take care of each other, and don’t let life get you down. Just remember when death separates you, that it’ll only be for a little while.”
Then he and the spirits ascended together, waving good-bye. The Ghostbusters and their wives waved back and watched in bittersweet awe as Slimer finally ascended from the earthly plane. The light from the statue faded. The gems on the statues stopped glowing and they were left alone with Futura. Not an eye was dry.
“You were right, Futura,” Ray said, swiping tears from his eyes with his sleeve. “That was the most important thing we’ve ever done. Thank you for making it possible.”
She smiled and replied, “I was just a messenger. You made it possible. Thank you for choosing me to be a part of it. It has been my extreme honor to know you all.” She choked out that statement and the finality of it made it clear to them all that they would be saying good-bye to another dear friend that day. It didn’t need to be said, so no one said it, but they all knew that once she returned them to their own time, she would never be allowed to see them again, as her role in their destiny was complete.
Egon had an epiphany at that moment. He’d been worried that they changed history when they traveled through time. He finally understood that they hadn’t. They only traveled through time as much as they were destined to, for the sake of contributing to history, and Futura’s time to do this had ended. He would make sure that this was taught at the academy.
The academy.
He smiled proudly as he looked around at their future handiwork. They would definitely have a lot to talk about once they got home.
Futura led them to the entrance to the academy and stood with them at the gates. She hugged them each in turn, leaving extra long hugs for Jess, Jake, and Eddie.
“I haven’t the words to express how much I’ll miss you, Tura.”
“Neither do I. Just know that I will meet you on the other side one day.”
Jessica hugged her once more and stepped away, tears pouring from her eyes. Futura blinked back tears and reached into her pocket. She handed Jake a small, familiar device and told him that it was the driver for the Time Turbo for the Ghost Buggy. He, Eddie, Ray and Egon were to travel back to the year his and Eddie’s fathers opened the business and put it into the car.
Futura then handed a slip of paper to Alice and instructed her to go with them and cast a white necromantic spell to cause good ghosts to possess their office equipment. Finally, she gave Egon a tube of blood. He looked at it curiously. “It’s mine. For the DNA coding on my mission folder.” He nodded and gingerly placed it in his shirt pocket, buttoning it safely inside.
She then told them to step through the front gate and they would be transported home automatically. They thanked her again and stepped through. Futura walked back into the academy campus, her eyes shimmering with tears of grief at having to say a final farewell to all her dearest friends in the world.
She wiped her eyes and headed toward her school. That’s when she saw someone coming towards her and she smiled immediately.
It was her brother Morrow. He too had tears in his eyes, but he returned her sad smile in earnest. Everything would soon be all right.
He was carrying two silver chalices.
