Chapter 1- Heart of Gold
”Disappointment” seemed to be the appropriate adjective to describe her life. Wiping away crystal tears from a silvery-grey eye, the forlorn young lady leaned against the bridge, staring into a dusky, slightly starry sky. The stars were ever so proud, so bold and strong in their position, serving as moments of brilliance in an otherwise dark world; trying their best to illuminate Republic City which was crumbling slowly, the perfect analogy to her freshly broken heart.
“Here, I stand, the Universe's favorite joke,” she said aloud, her voice choked with tears of frustration. “I guess the old saying 'nice benders finish last' is true. “ Licking her lips, tasting nothing but salt from her onslaught of tears, the young lady sighed, adding a defeated chuckle.
Crushed, despondent, even the strongest metal couldn’t bind the broken pieces of her heart. Stricken with grief, she could physically feel little shards falling haphazardly under her ribs…sediments lodging between the fragile, curved cartilage. Her gorgeous eyes were cold, affixed in a steely gaze once again, becoming blurred with tears of despair, the stars transforming into blurry dots.
“Just breathe..just hope”, she whispered, wiping her hand underneath her eye again, wondering why only one was leaking while the other remained dry. She had given up on humanity in her younger years, regaining it slowly as she developed into a young woman, but tonight, her mind was conflicted. The human spirit had once again failed her. She had offered her heart of gold , only to have it dropped like a hot rock on an anvil. As much as she hated to become literally “one” with the element that flowed through her veins, she was at an extreme loss. There was no other choice.
“I wonder if anyone would try to stop me if I jumped right now,” she thought, casting her eyes downward, wondering if her soul would be admitted to the Afterlife or Eternal Forge. Closing her eyes, the young lady of broken spirit, took a few steps forward...
”Whhhhhhyyyyyy??????Whhhyyyy???”
”Huh?” she asked aloud, stopping in her open-toed boots. The sobbing from a male voice behind her sounded merciless; damn near excruciating. She could contrast the shrieks to the mating call of the humpback whaleseal in the summertime.
”What the hell...?” she asked aloud, distracted from her own misery by the awful wailing. The melancholic melody of someone else’s anguish sparked a flame of compassion. Turning her head slowly, she caught a glimpse of an extremely bereaved young man bawling, his fists covering his probably swollen eyes, his posture slack…having a damn near conniption.
