This story is largely a work in progress. The first chapter is short but will be the shortest update. I'll try to update this once a month at least with the most being once per week.
Four years had come and gone so quickly that Dipper hardly noticed them. School had taken his mind off the odd events as did the standard family activity that he started to take part in. Birthdays, trips to movies and his sister's softball games. Being there when she broke up with several boyfriends and when she left the softball team for the roller derby. Some of it was surprising but after some time seemed to fit her in one way or another. Friendships had formed, tempered in various ways and while some had become brittle and broken others only grew stronger leaving Dipper with a supportive group of friends all his own.
The odd days he had spent in Gravity Falls were nearly forgotten.
Four years, two months and thirty four days in to his working past the events and obsessions from that town it all came back as if it could feel it was slipping from his mind and losing its hold over Dippers life. The first signs of anything other than normal life had come in the way of night lasting longer than days and for many it had been a noticeable change everyone waited for science to solve. When it didn't however the whole of the country was stumped and then the whole of the world. Satellites sent data back to the labs dotted around the globe showing that everything should be as it always was. Day should still last several hours longer than it should, the temperature should be warmer and life should be going on as normal. Nothing made sense anymore and while a lot of it was held under wraps by government agencies in order to prevent a panic there were always groups that got information they shouldn't have for the better or for the worse of mankind.
Some people trusted this 'leaked' information and some didn't saying it was all some hoax but in a jarring realization Dipper had chosen the former of these opinions and all for one very good reason. This had all been predicted and so far the details were lining up in the exact order for something he remembered he needed to fear but couldn't remember exactly what these signs heralded. If only he had the collection of journals from Gravity falls, but they had been lost when Stan had passed away and Dipper assumed they had been buried with him to take the secrets they held to the grave as some of them could potentially destroy the world. The glow of a trio of monitors lit Dipper's face while he typed out what he could recall from memory doodling with his mouse what he couldn't replicate with standard written words and while some of it was wrong or flawed with the passage of time he knew that some of it was better than nothing. Drinking from a can of soda he hadn't stopped typing when Mabel had walked in though he did cringe when she flicked the light on without warning.
“Grunkle sent you a package in the mail!” Never losing that sweet innocence she was known for she had brought the thick envelope to her brother and sat it down on his desk. “Well? Open it! I want to see what he sent you. It might have something to do with what's been going on don't you think? I mean if anyone would know about it, it would be him right?”
“No, Stan would have known though.” Dipper had corrected before pulling the flap open and spilling out documents. Photocopies of some of the pages from the journals! Mouth opening in a surprised 'o' shape he had leafed through them and compared them with the notes he had been typing. “These must be-”
“Oh wow! I thought they lost the journals.” Mabel said while pulling up a cardboard box and sitting atop it as she watched Dipper type. “You thought about the journals too then. So you think it's related to our summer?”
“No, not our summer, but something like it. Remember what the uh, the agents said? These kinds of things happened all over the world, but happened most often in Gravity Falls. I think maybe one of the 'occasional' events is either real big, or something happened. We need to go back.” Dipper said simply and looked to Mabel. “We need to go back to Gravity Falls. I think if we're going to find any answers we'll find them there.”
“The Mystery Shack is gone though. There's nothing left.”
“It's not about the Shack Mabel, it's about the town. The Shack was built because of the events, the events didn't start because the Shack was there.” Getting up from his chair Dipper had started to pack some clothing in luggage he had bought for his orientation of a local college. “Well, what are you waiting for? You want to go right?”
Beaming at her brother Mabel lept off the box she was on and raced to her own room to start packing. Dipper knew humility and he knew that having two widely different points of view could only help. By no means was Mabel dumb and he trusted that she would be able to go toe to toe with him when it came to figuring out what was going on. Taking the dusty blue and white hat stained with age from the hook it hung on overlooking the rest of the room Dipper dusted it off and adjusted the band around the back to fit him after all this time.Once his bags were packed and things were ready Dip had gone to gather up the photocopies of the journal when a shaky hand written note had slid out from between a couple. Odd, this was new and had never been part of the original pages. Could Stan have been working on this right up until he died? The handwriting did look unsteady perhaps with age. Gently lifting it Dipper began to read.
' To keep the portal from being opened again I've burned the journals but kept copies of the less dangerous pages locked away with the old radio in the woods. I've left these with my brother since my health is failing me. I pray you never need these but I'm not simple enough to think you'll be safe from this forever. There has to be something for you if you need it.
Stan'
Dipper nodded to the letter as if it had been his uncle and even muttered a soft thank you to no one at all before slipping the note back into the pile of pages. He would examine them all more once they got back to Gravity Falls but for now it was time to pack the car and start this road trip.
“Gravity Falls, here we come.”
