Lady Jaye had shown the symbol to a couple of her close friends, hoping they could tell her what it meant. She didn't want to get others involved in family business, so she didn't give many details about why she was interested. Nobody had a clue. Finally she thought she might get results posting the image on online ask sites to see if someone knew something. After days of posting anywhere she could, she got a reply from someone saying he/she had seen the symbol on a billboard. The helpful person gave her directions to a compound in the desert but had admitted he/she had never actually visited it because it had given him/her the creeps. After that, the information went dry. There were no accounts from people who had actually visited the compound and knew what it was for. The contents of her sister's letter were so odd that Lady Jaye had no choice but to travel there herself and see if her sister was happy and healthy.
Driving to the compound would be a two day trip by car. Lady Jaye took a two week vacation with the explanation she needed to help her wayward sister with personal issues. She figured that would be enough time to get to the bottom of whatever was going on with a sister who had seemed to disappear off the face of the earth for years. Before she left, she told her close friend Flint where she was going, giving him no details other than directions to the compound in case she didn't return in two weeks.
It was late afternoon when Lady Jaye finally spotted the billboard with the pyramid symbol. This was after traveling since early morning when she had checked out of the first hotel she could find traveling through a remote part of the country the day before. This compound was as out of the way as one could get. She was excited to approach the end of her journey. Another ten minute drive and she could see a huge wall in the distance.
Lady Jaye was apprehensive as she approached a massive metal gate. What could be on the other side? What kind of weird situation did her ne'er-do-well sister get herself into? She rolled down her window as the gate opened; she was approached by two hard-eyed men all in red. They carried staffs that were topped with two razor sharp prongs glowing with brilliant red energy. "I'm here to see my sister Lola," Lady Jaye told them.
One of the men touched his temple. "The masters are occupied at the moment, but you are allowed to enter," he said.
"Huh?! -Masters?!" Lady Jaye wondered as she drove in. She remembered the mention of masters in the cryptic letter. Then her eyes widened in wonder at the sight before her. It was like driving into a fantasy land. Right in the middle of cool streams and fertile farm fields stood a great palace with ivory towers that almost matched the surrounding mountains in height. Impressive but slightly less grand buildings surrounded the structure, which had a curious prismatic globe held up by twin atlases as a focal point. Warehouses, silos and neat little barns could be seen off in the far distance. She wasn't so enchanted with the place that she failed to notice it was completely enclosed by a man made thirty foot wall, the ends of which seemed to be built right into a natural wall of sheer cliffs.
Lady Jaye stopped her car and allowed one of the guards in red to climb into the passenger seat. He introduced himself as Brother Daniel; she introduced herself and asked to be directed to her sister. "A lot of twins around here," she said, gesturing to a carving in a wall of twin faces staring at one another past clasped fists. It was the third pair she had seen after the atlases and a smaller statue in the distance.
"Those are in honor of our lords and supreme rulers, Tomax and Xamot," Daniel replied, "Oh, here we are."
Weirded out, Lady Jaye parked in front of a multistoried structure designed to look like a fantastical castle with ivory pillars on every corner. Just as she got out of the car, she could see a woman in the advanced stages of pregnancy running toward her. "ALISON!!" she shouted excitedly, then lowered her voice, "They told me you were here. Did you get my letter?"
"Lola?!" Lady Jaye replied, astonished. She hardly recognized this sister who glowed with happiness. She was used to a Lola who tried overly hard to look tough and who dressed like a tramp. This new Lola had a peaceful, dreamy expression and was dressed in a loose, almost sloppy looking outfit consisting of a hooded sweatshirt, baggy pants and sandals. The strange pyramid symbol was sewn in yellow on one shoulder.
Lola showed Lady Jaye around the building that served as the living quarters for the 'disciples', as she referred to herself and others. "I used to sleep in the communal bunks with others, but now that I'm going to give birth, I have my own apartments to take care of the baby in. Masters told me it's going to be a girl. I'm going to name her Maria after mother."
"Who are these 'masters'? Who is the father of your child?" Lady Jaye asked, embracing her. The answer she was about to receive was to be disturbing as..
"You haven't met the Brothers of Light yet?" Lola replied, "One of them is the father, but I can't recall who I was with around the time of conception. It might have been Xamot. Usually they insist on meeting every newcomer straight away. I'll keep showing you around, and we'll probably run into them. They have the psychic gift. When they decide it's time, they will be able to seek us out with the power of their minds."
Sure enough, they did run into them. Lola had wanted to show Lady Jaye the beautiful gardens in the courtyard before it got too dark. Two lovely robed figures sat side by side on a bench under an arched trellis of pink roses. Arms linked and heads together, they didn't notice the newcomers right away; when they did, they stood in unison and approached them slowly. When they got closer, Lady Jaye was astonished to see they were two witchy looking identical twin men. She didn't know what she had expected them to be, but it was all too weird. One of the men had a scar on his right cheek. He took her hand and said, "Welcome to our secret garden. Allow us to introduce ourselves. I am Tomax..." "...and I am Xamot," the other said as he gently held her other hand, then they spoke in unison, "WE ARE THE BROTHERS OF LIGHT."
Lady Jaye looked back and forth between them as they kept either cutting each other off or speaking in unison. Each seemed to know what the other was going to say and would finish the others sentences. They called themselves healers of soul and psyche and spoke in soft, serene voices that were vaguely hypnotic. A smell clung to them that was slightly minty, slightly cinnamony, with a little smokiness and the pungent sweaty scent of hard labor underneath. She couldn't help but wonder if it was possible to find out which one of these odd twins fathered her sister's child through a paternity test? Once she convinced Lola to go home with her, she'd have to encourage her go after one of these guys for child support.
"We are very disappointed Sister Lola defied us..." "...and sent a letter to the outside world..." the twins said, giving each other a look that was more anxious than perturbed, "...but we are forgiving and very happy to have you..." "...you are welcome to stay as long as you wish."
Suddenly, the sound of a gong was heard in the distance.
"That would be the gong for dinner..." "...you are welcome to join us. Sister Lola, please show Alison -or if you prefer, Lady Jaye- to the dining room..." "WE WILL BE THERE SHORTLY." The brothers said, bowing. They slowly walked away, side by side, hands folded in the generous fabric of their sleeves.
"How did they know my name?" Lady Jaye asked.
"I told you, they have the psychic gift. They can read your thoughts. I wasn't aware they knew about my letter, but they must have heard me thinking about it when they met you," Lola replied, sighing, "I'm sorry I disappointed them. Were they not the most beautiful and wonderful beings you've ever seen?"
Lady Jaye raised an eyebrow. She saw Tomax and Xamot as being like a pair of rose haired tarantulas, beautiful in their own way she supposed, but the thought of having one on her gave her the chills. She wondered at her sister's tastes in men sometimes, although those creepy twins were a step above the thugs and scumbags she was used to seeing her sister with in the past.
The dining room was packed when they got there. Every man, woman and child was dressed exactly the same as Lola, excluding the guards in red. The dinner was set up banquet style; people took what they wanted and sat down at long tables. The twins made an appearance by the time the two sisters sat down with their plates. Lady Jaye watched as they sat at the head of the table and were served by a group of people who gazed at them through heavily lidded adoring eyes. There was a strange kind of tension around her. Two boys kicked one another under the table. Their mothers sleepily ignored them until they got too rowdy, then they spoke admonishments in quiet, subdued voices. A few people ate methodically and stared straight ahead, wide-eyed, as if in a trance. It was like being in a room full of people on antidepressants with some folks seeming too close to their next dose and on the verge of doing something crazy. Lady Jaye suddenly had the weird thought that maybe the food was being drugged. She looked at the twins, who were oblivious to it all, whispering into each others ears. They seemed alert and were being served the same thing everyone else was having. They appeared to be uncannily close. "Lola, look!" she whispered loudly, gesturing as the one with the scar put a morsel of food into his brother's mouth. "Don't they seem a little too close?"
Lola shrugged. "The masters' souls are entwined. They have a special bond that lets them think and feel what the other does," she explained, "They spend a lot of time together, but they are wonderful to us. You'll love them once you get to know them. Tomax is very gentle and loving, and Xamot is a little silly but kind."
"Okay, ah..sounds interesting.." Lady Jaye replied. She had no intention of getting to know them. This was obviously some kind of kooky cult, and they were getting the hell out of there as soon as possible. Lola seemed happy, so it might be tricky to convince her to leave though. She would at least stay the night. That would give her a little time to look around and figure out what she would do.
After dinner, Lola brought her sister to her apartments so they could talk and talk. They had a lot of catching up to do. Lady Jaye tried to patiently answer Lola's questions about her military work fighting terrorists. Finally, she interrupted her, asking her how she came to live here. Lola told her about how she had been on her way to Denver with her boyfriend Hector. He was looking for work there, but had taken a wrong turn and gotten lost on some back roads. "Hector died, Alison," she said wistfully, looking at her hands, but her voice was flat because she had gotten over it long ago. "He was probably on something or drinking, I don't remember. He had to be though, because there was a sharp curve in the road one would have to be blind to miss, but he kept going straight and crashed into a ravine. I was wearing my seat belt, but he wasn't. He went through the wind shield. I went to get help and was blessed to be near the sanctuary of the Brothers of Light. They sent some brothers in red out to help Hector. I don't know if he was already dead by the time they brought him to the infirmary, but I never saw him again after that. Masters told me they had him buried in a beautiful hidden valley where he can be at peace."
The sisters talked for a few hours, then Lola suggested they get some rest so they could wake up in time for breakfast. Lady Jaye had one more question, "This place is big enough that everyone could have their own apartment. Why do some people sleep crammed into communal bunks?"
"We don't question the masters decisions. Thinking about it though, I suppose it's because they plan on someday making this place into a great city. Then they plan on making places like this all over the world, filled with people they've healed and shown peace. More than anything though, Masters want to love and be loved." After that, Lola turned off the lights and they went to bed.
In all her years working for the military, Lady Jaye had never had trouble sleeping in weird places on missions. She'd been in tents in the jungle dropping off with the whine of insects all around or out in crude shelters with grass for her pillow and still managed to sleep well. Here, however, she stared into the darkness for the longest time, chilled. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
