Brawl in the Family
“Uncle Frank! Aunt Natalie! Great to see you made it!”
Ben Tennyson welcomed his Aunt and Uncle into his home as they entered; Natalie warily scanning the living room for anything out of the ordinary. “In all honesty I’m surprised the house is still standing.”
Ben laughed nervously. “Yeah, everything’s AOK here. Just a calm, peaceful Thanksgiving dinner with family.”
Natalie let out a soft scoff before making her way to the kitchen, after spotting Ben’s parents there. Frank decided to remain behind with his nephew. “Hey Ben, so how’s the hero gig treating you?”
“Actually, thing’s have been a little quiet lately.” Ben answered. “I’m kinda glad, gives me more time to hang out with friends.”
Frank nodded in agreement. “Yeah, that’s always important. Say, uh…Sandra’s not offering up Tofu Turkey again this year, is she?”
Ben smirked. “Don’t worry, Dad and I talked her out of it.”
Frank breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank goodness. She’s still on that health kick?”
“Yep.” Ben replied. “She’s got the whole family losing weight…mostly because Dad & I can’t really stomach some of her meals.”
Frank chuckled and patted his nephew on the back before following after his wife into the kitchen. Ben took this moment to plop back down on the couch in front of the TV. Things have been quiet in Bellwood for the last week. Alien sightings and general villainy have dried up, giving the Intergalactic Hero an impromptu but welcome vacation. It’s given him time to plan for college, catch up with friends…
DING-DONG!
…and plan a Thanksgiving Dinner for his family as he jumped up to answer the door. Opening it up, he saw two more guests to the Dinner; Gwen & Kevin.
“S’up.” Kevin said, tossing a bag of chips into Ben’s chest as he walked in.
“Uh, what’s with the chips?” Ben asked.
“I didn’t wanna come empty handed.” Kevin explained. “I’m not rude, you know.”
“Who eats chips at Thanksgiving?” Ben asked himself as Gwen took the bag off his hands.
“Don’t worry about it.” She told him. “And thanks for the invite. It’s been so quiet around here I’m surprised this went off without some random alien attack.”
“Tell me about it.” Kevin agreed. “I haven’t smashed anything in two weeks. And they’re getting tired of me over at the Plumbers Training Facility.”
“Still nice to be able to do this, though.” Ben chimed in.
“Everybody here?” Gwen asked.
“Not yet.” Ben told her. “Grandpa and the others called about 10 minutes ago saying they’re on their way…”
DING-DONG!
“…and that should be them now.”
Turning towards the door, he opened it wide to see his Grandfather Max Tennyson standing there, holding a paper bag. They embraced in the doorway before Max came in, receiving a hug from his niece as well. “Good to see you, Grandpa.” She told him.
“And it’s good to see my grandkids again, outside of battle.” He commented. “Though I know Kevin is aching for a little action.”
“You said it, Gramps.” Kevin agreed.
Max chuckled. “By the way, they said the Weightlifting room has been renovated enough for participation, but you’re still barred from the Sparring ring until the facility completely rehabbed.”
Kevin scoffed. “Figures.”
Max turned to Ben. “Is your mother making her Tofu Turkey again?”
“Actually…we talked her out of it, this year.” Ben revealed.
“Crud.” Max lamented. “And I brought the perfect dish to go with it…”Octopus-loaf with cabbage stuffing.”
He pulled that very dish out of the bag, showing it to his grandchildren, who immediately fought back the urge to release the contents of their stomachs. “Oh…that’s, a shame Grandpa.” Ben said, trying to sound sincere.
“Aw well, maybe I can still sneak it in as a side dish.” He thought aloud before going to join the rest of the family in the kitchen. Once gone out of sight, the three breathed a sigh of relief as Gwen & Kevin sat down on the couch.
“Wait a minute…” Kevin said. “…your mom’s not cooking her Tofu Turkey? So I didn’t need to bring the chips.”
DING-DONG!
“And the family just keeps flooding in.” Ben quipped as he opened the door. Looking out, he saw that he was right as his Grandmother Verdona stood in front of her.
“Grandma!”
“There’s my favorite Grandchild!” She exclaimed, strolling right past Ben and over to her niece. “How have you been, Gwen?”
“Uh, just fine Grandma.” Gwen said as Verdona leaned over and hugged her.
Kevin couldn’t help but to snicker as Ben was left standing there, arms open. It didn’t go unnoticed by the grand matriarch, though. “Just kidding, Ben.” She said as she moved over to hug him.
“That sense of humor…” Gwen noted to herself, shaking her head.
“How wonderful it is to see my two most powerful Grandchildren again.” Verdona beamed. “And Kevin’s here, as well; wonderful! Have you two gotten started on making me any great-grandchildren?”
And just like that, both Kevin & Gwen’s expressions turned to shock, while Ben developed a huge grin on his face. “GRANDMA!!!” Gwen exclaimed.
“Oh, stop being so uptight.” Verdona told her. “It’s really not a good look for an Anodite. Now where’s your grandfather? I believe I have some catching up to do with him as well.”
Ben pointed her towards the kitchen as she strolled off there happily, leaving the three teens by themselves again. “Well, that was severely uncomfortable.”
DING-DONG!
“And something tells me it might get even more so.” Ben replied as he opened the door. Before he could react to the sight in his doorway though, he was taken in for a mammoth hug; courtesy of his great-aunt Vera Tennyson.
“BEN! Oh, it is such a TREAT to see you again!” She exclaimed, picking him up off the ground with her hug before releasing him and spotting her grand-niece. “And Gwen’s here, too!”
With startling speed she rushed over towards Gwen, who’s first instinct was to use her magic to disappear from sight. But she held back and accepted the hug; which almost suffocated her. “Great…to see you too…Aunt Vera!”
After a moment, she finally released Gwen, and noticed the other person in the room. “And you must be Kevin!”
As she moved towards the Osmosian, he quickly jumped to his feet, putting his hands up. “Wait, I’m not actually family!”
It wasn’t enough to stop her, though. “But you love my Gwenny, so that’s good enough for me.”
Before he knew it, he felt the vice grip of her hug pick him up off the floor. Kevin recalled back to his fights with Ben’s foes like Vilgax, and how none of them ever locked him up as tight as Ben’s great-aunt. She then put him down, remembering that she didn’t travel alone. “Oh, where are my manners. Clyde, come in and say hi to the family!”
The three turned to the door to see her grandson standing there; the tall, lanky, blond-haired Clyde Fife. “Do we have to be here?” He asked. “I could be training at the Plumber Facility now!”
“They’re closed down today anyway.” Kevin told him. “Due to…uh, remodeling.”
“Thank you, Kevin.” Vera told him. “You shouldn’t be thinking about your training so much, anyway. Now come on, let’s go say hi to the rest of the family.”
And with that, two more members of the family departed, leaving Team Ben alone once more. “So, that was the dweeb you were talking about?”
“KEVIN!” Gwen scolded.
“His words, not mine.” Kevin responded.
“BEN!”
“Not my exact words!” Ben said in his defense. “He’s just a little…awkward.”
DING-DONG!
“Yeah, I think I’ll head in the kitchen before I get bombarded by anymore of your family.” Kevin said, rising from his seat.
“Yeah, good idea.” Gwen added as she followed suit. Ben simply shrugged as he found himself happy to deal with family, as opposed to the universal threats that usually come knocking. As he opened the door though, he found himself staring at the latter; in the form of Princess Attea.
“Ben! Long time no see.”
It took him a moment to process the sight in front of him, but he was snapped from his daze by the sound of his cousin’s voice. “Who is it, Ben?”
Instinctively, he slammed the door shut and put his back to it. “Nothing! I mean, no one! Just…a wrong neighbor, I’ll take care of it!”
Before anyone could question just what he meant, he quickly reopened the door and slipped out, slamming it shut behind him. “Wrong neighbors?” Gwen repeated.
Outside the house, Ben tried to deal with this unexpected situation quickly. “What are you doing here?”
“What? An ordinary girl can’t drop by and say hi?” She asked, feigning innocence.
“Since when were you ordinary?” Ben shot back.
Attea sighed. “You’re right. Royalty just can’t help bein’ Royalty.”
“You didn’t answer my question.”
“Calm down, Ben.” She told him. “Remember, we got a truce.”
“I’m wondering if you still remember that.”
“Course I do. In fact, that’s why I’m here!” She revealed. “I understand that today is known as da Givin’ of Thanks on your planet.”
“That’s Thanksgiving.” Ben said, correcting her.
“Whateva.” She responded. “And in the spirit of dat season, since you helped me to ascend da throne, I’d like ta give my thanks to you…by letting you join my empire!”
Ben cocked an eyebrow. “Are you serious? This again!?”
“Oh no, it’s not like before.” She explained. “See? I’m willin’ to let your little Plumber friends here join up as well. And you even get to keep dat monkey face. ‘Course, if ya wanna change into Bullfrag—!”
“No on both counts.” Ben interrupted, folding his arms. “Now leave.”
Attea sighed. “Such a shame…and I thought ya liked having ya little playhouses intact.”
Ben became wary after hearing that. “What are you talking about?”
“I’m talkin’ about ya little Plumber Headquarters on this planet.” She elaborated. “The one ran by ya grandfather? Some of my Incursean Special Forces have already infiltrated it and are, at the moment, planting bombs. One word from me, and it’ll take you years to dig it back out!”
“You gotta be kidding me…” Ben said in disbelief. “…you picked today of all days to do this!?”
“Like I said, it’s a gift.” She responded. “The glorious opportunity to join up with the Incursean Armada! Or, you can say no, and just hope your enough defense for this planet when some invadin’ Fleet comes along! Think about it, ya got one hour!”
She smirked deviously as she tapped a button on her belt buckle. A moment later, she dissolved into the night sky, right before Ben’s eyes; leaving the Omnitrix wielder in a state of shock.
“Why couldn’t this happen on Labor Day?”
