Dr Delbert Doppler was in his kitchen, hunting through the rows of cupboards. Two cups of tea and a small teapot stood steaming on the bench behind him. Failing to find a tray, he sighed and stacked the cups in their saucers on top of each other, picked up the pot in his other hand, and carefully made his way into the living room. It was mid-afternoon, but the clouds hanging over Benbow township were low and dark, bulging with rain.
“I'm sorry for the delay,” he said. “I, er, couldn't find a few things in the kitchen.”
Sarah Hawkins looked up from where she had been sitting in the big armchair by the empty fireplace. “What did you need?”
“Well, first the sugar. I thought I found it, but it turned out to be the salt. And then a tray.” Doppler gingerly put the cups down on the small side table and put them side by side. “I'm sure I have one somewhere.”
“You have about two dozen,” said Sarah, taking her cup. “You should have asked me to come and help you.”
“Oh, no, no, I couldn't do that.” Doppler shook his head. “You may be my housekeeper, but I couldn't ask you to do that after...well, what with everything that's happened to you recently.”
Sarah looked down. “Well...thanks. But I think it'd be better if I kept busy. I don't even like thinking about it.”
“It must be hard.” Doppler sat on the couch. “I was so surprised when I heard that he'd left you.”
“You weren't the only one,” Sarah managed a forced smile.
“Yes, of course...and how is young James?” Doppler looked up from his tea.
“Oh, who knows? One minute he's fine, and I think that he's come to terms with it. And then he just goes to pieces or flies off the handle at the slightest little thing.” Sarah sighed. “I sent him back to school today. I think that's the best thing for him. Or I hope so anyway. I just don't know.”
“I...well, I don't know either.” Doppler admitted. “I've never known something like this before.”
“Well, life doesn't come with a manual,” said Sarah. “Leland always used to say that. It's one of the few things that son-of-a-bitch got right...if you'll pardon my language.”
“Under the circumstances,” said Doppler, “I think it's entirely justified.”
Sarah snorted. “I've used worse language about him.”
“I'm sure that was justified, too,” said Doppler, shaking his head. “I don't know how he could do it. Walking out on you and James like that.”
“Things had been bad for a while,” Sarah said. “I mean...really bad. When the mine he worked at closed down...well, it's been difficult. I don't know what we'd have done if it wasn't for you, Delbert.”
“Well, Leland was a dab hand with mechanics,” said Doppler. “The old boilers around the manor haven't worked so well in years. And of course, I couldn't have asked for a better housekeeper than you, Sarah.”
Sarah smiled. “Thanks for the compliment. And the work helped. We'd probably have lost the house without it.”
“I'm glad I could help,” Doppler shrugged. “So...if you don't mind me asking...what will you do now?”
Sarah shrugged. “Well...the house was an inn once. And most of the fixtures are still there; they just haven't been used in a while. I could open it up again. That way I'd always be home for Jim. And he'd be able to lend a hand when he's old enough.”
“That sounds like a plan,” said Doppler, encouragingly. “Do you think you'll be able to do it?”
“Maybe.” Sarah looked pensive for a moment. “I do still have some money put by...I hate to say a good word about Leland, but at least he didn't rob us blind before he abandoned us. I just hope it's enough to do all the work the place needs.”
“Well, if it's just a question of money, we could always take a look at your salary,” said Doppler. “I wouldn't mind paying you more.”
Sarah shook her head. “No. I mean, thanks, but the answer is no. It's not that I don't appreciate the offer, but...I don't want to be reliant on anyone any longer. I was reliant on Leland and look where that got me. I don't want to have to depend on your charity, Delbert. It wouldn't be fair to you, and it's not what I want for Jim and me. I want us to have our own lives, to take care of ourselves. You know?”
Doppler nodded. “I understand. You want to be self-reliant.”
“Exactly. It's not right for us to have to count on someone else...not even on someone as kind and as generous as you.” Sarah took his hand with a small smile. “Which...is kind of why I need to give my two weeks' notice. It'll take a lot of work to get the old inn ready for business, and once it's open, it'll need all of my time.”
“I thought so,” Doppler patted her hand. “And I respect your wishes. Well, if you won't accept any other of my offers, I'll at least promise to be one of your first customers. I certainly know that your cooking is excellent.”
“Thanks, Delbert.” Sarah smiled again. “That really helps. Will you be all right here without me?”
Doppler shrugged. “I'll be able to find another housekeeper. Obviously not one as good as you, but...”
Sarah laughed. “Oh, Delbert, that's really very kind of you to say.”
“It's nothing but the truth.” Doppler looked at her. “You've been a tremendous help to me.”
“Not as much as you've been to me,” Sarah said. “And I don't just mean the money for the job. You've been a good friend. A true friend.”
She took his hand for a moment. Doppler coughed awkwardly.
“Er. Ahem. Well, as anyone would be, I should hope.”
“I think I can prove that not anyone actually would,” said Sarah pointedly. “Montressor isn't the friendliest of planets. There are a hell of a lot of disappointed people out there. People like us who came when everyone was talking about how Montressor's ore was going to be the next big thing.”
Doppler nodded sadly. The forecasts for the quantity and quality of Montressor's mineral deposits had proven wildly optimistic, though not before hundreds of thousands of hopeful migrants had arrived. A good many of them were now broke, too poor to even be able to leave the barren, rocky planet. Leland Hawkins had been lucky to have the skills to land him a job on a trampship bound for who knew where. Sarah sighed again.
“I can still remember how Leland sold me on the idea of coming here,” she said. “'Trust me, it'll be great! We're bound to strike it lucky!' As if we had any luck at all since we got here...”
“I hope it hasn't been as bad as all that,” said Doppler.
Sarah looked up at him and smiled. “Yeah...I guess it hasn't been...”
“That's the spirit.” Doppler smiled back. “For what it's worth, I think you've handled all of this very well. I can only imagine how hard it is, or what it would feel like.”
“I've felt better,” Sarah admitted. “But thanks. I'm trying my best.”
“If anyone's strong enough to make it, you are,” Doppler felt a blush at this outburst of chivalry. “I mean...well, I hope you can always remember that.”
She smiled at him kindly. “Aw, Delbert...you always know what to say.”
“That's not something I've often been accused of before,” Doppler joked. “You know how I sometimes say the wrong thing.”
“Yeah, but that's part of your charm,” Sarah chuckled. “At least you're trying.”
Doppler gave a small, shy smile. “I'm glad you think so, at least.”
“Always.” Sarah patted his hand again and finished her tea. Doppler collected her cup and saucer and returned to the kitchen. He returned to find Sarah plumping up the cushions on the couch and hurried over.
“Oh, no, no! No, you don't have to. Please, just sit...”
“Well, if you're going to be doing my job, I might as well find something else to do,” Sarah grinned as she sat on the couch. Doppler hesitated a moment before joining her. They sat in silence for a moment until she looked up at the portraits on the wall.
“All your family?”
Doppler nodded. “Ancestors. My family have been here for quite some time, I'm afraid.”
“I'm glad someone has been.” Sarah looked down again. “Voluntarily, I mean. And successfully, obviously. It gives me a bit of hope that this place isn't a totally dead loss.”
Doppler shifted closer and took her hand. “It's really not. And I really do think you'll make it. I...I believe in you, Sarah. I can't imagine you ever giving up.”
“I'll try not to let you down.” Sarah squeezed his hand. “At least I'll know to make better choices in men now.”
Doppler gave a rueful smile. “That's a positive spin to put on the situation.”
“Chalk it up to experience, I guess.” Sarah shrugged. “I'm sure you know what I mean.”
“Well...no. Not really.” Doppler glanced away.
“What do you mean? Has there never been a Mrs Doppler? Or even a prospective one?” Sarah looked at him curiously. “If you don't mind me asking, that is.”
“It's all right.” Doppler shook his head. “And...no, is the answer. Not since university.”
“There was someone...special there?”
Doppler sighed. “A fellow student. Her name was Mary. We were in the undergraduate program together, and in the post-graduate class. But then we got into the doctoral program and...well, that was that. She had to go to another research university to do her thesis. We tried to keep in touch, but...I suppose we got caught up in our work. Over time, the letters just stopped.”
“Did you ever see her again?” Sarah asked.
“Once or twice at conferences,” said Doppler. “But not for years. And I don't think we ever spoke.”
“I'm sorry.” Sarah held his hand. “I didn't know.”
Doppler shrugged. “There's no reason you would know. Besides, I count myself fortunate in a way. At least it was amicable.”
“True.” Sarah nodded. “It's best that way.”
Doppler heard the quaver in her voice and put his hand on top of hers. “Oh, Sarah...”
“It's funny,” Sarah sighed. “So many women fall over themselves to get a man like Leland. He was the most handsome guy in our home town. Nobody would have turned him down. I was the happiest girl the world when he asked me out, when he asked me to move to Montressor with him. Kind of reminds you that there's no justice in the universe.”
“How do you mean?”
“I mean that it's stupid that women can be so keen to chase a jackass like Leland when all along we should have been hoping to find someone kind...someone sweet...understanding...you know, someone like...like you, Delbert.” Sarah looked up at him, a blush touching her cheeks. Doppler felt one rising to his own and coughed.
“Well. I don't know about that. I don't think I'm that much of a catch.”
“Then you think wrong.” Sarah whispered. “Any woman should be glad to find someone like you. Even if you're just a friend.”
Doppler couldn't hide his blush now. “That's awfully kind of you. And I might say that any man would be glad of you...well, any man with more than half a functioning brain, anyway.”
Sarah laughed. “Oh, I hope that's true, Delbert.”
“How so?”
“Well, I don't plan on being alone forever. I mean, aside from Jim.” Sarah stopped and sighed pensively again. “Although what are the odds of that happening on this rock...”
“I wouldn't dismiss it,” said Doppler. “With Crescentia so nearby, one thing you can be sure of is that there will always be people coming and going through here. And if anyone could persuade someone to stay then it's you.”
“I'm not sure that I'm that persuasive,” Sarah smiled. “All I'd be able to offer them is a struggling old inn and a young boy. And I don't know how Jim would react, either. I can't just replace his father, after all.”
“No...I suppose not.” Doppler looked down. “But these are questions for the future. You don't have to answer them now.”
“I don't think that I could,” said Sarah quietly. “But you're right. I need to think about the here and now.”
“Exactly.” Doppler smiled encouragingly. “And I may not be much good at answering those other questions, but I'll do my best to help you.”
“I know.” Sarah's blue-grey eyes looked into his. “I don't think I'll be lonely.”
“You won't be,” Doppler promised.
“And I hope you won't be be, either.”
Doppler shrugged. “Oh, no. I've got my work.”
“Is that all you need?” Sarah watched him.
“It's been enough so far.” Doppler shrugged. “Why do you ask?”
Sarah looked down for a moment. “Because...well, because you...could have more than that, if you wanted...”
“I...don't understand?”
Sarah fixed him with her gaze. “Do you trust me, Delbert?”
“Of course.” Doppler looked puzzled. “Why?”
“Because I need to know that you understand that I'd never do anything to threaten our friendship,” said Sarah softly.
“I know.” Doppler touched her arm. “Of course I know.”
“Good.”
Their lips met. Doppler's eyes flew wide.
“Sarah!”
“It doesn't have to be any more than this,” Sarah whispered. “It doesn't have to be more than once. I hate to even ask after you've given me so much, but...do you think we could? Do you think we're owed some luck at last?”
Doppler searched her face, his mind racing. Then he nodded.
“Yes. I think we are.”
“And do you think that...after everything...we could make our own luck just for today?”
Doppler nodded once more. Sarah closed her eyes in contentment as he kissed her again.
“I trust you, Sarah.”
“And...do you think we can make this work?” Sarah stroked his face, enjoying the novelty of his fur.
“I think our friendship is strong enough,” Doppler shivered at her touch. “And...and I think we understand one another.”
“Will this change anything?” Sarah watched him carefully. “I've made enough mistakes...I don't want this to be another one.”
“It won't be.” Doppler touched her cheek.
“Are you sure?”
He nodded, nuzzling her warmly. “I swear to you, Sarah. I will always respect and admire you. There's nothing you...we...could possibly do to change that.”
Sarah embraced him closely. “You've no idea how much that means to me. Just to finally be with someone who feels that way about me...”
“Oh, Sarah.” Doppler sighed, holding her. “There really hasn't been enough love in your life, has there?”
Sarah felt tears welling up and she buried her face in the fur of Doppler's neck. “Delbert...in all my time with Leland, I-”
“Don't think about that.” Doppler stroked her hair. “Just take this moment. Just how you want it.”
Sarah took a deep, shuddering breath and pulled back to gaze into his dark eyes. “Where have you been all my life, Delbert Doppler?”
She drew him into a kiss, deepening it as he responded. His weight and height gave him an advantage and Sarah allowed him to press her gently back against the couch. Lying together, they explored carefully, neither wanting to push the other too far. Sarah closed her eyes, learning the unfamiliar shapes of the canid's form, finding her way around his large nose to his lips. She touched a hand to the side of his head and found one of his soft, floppy ears, caressing it curiously and finding to her surprise that it provoked a shiver and a soft whimper from him.
“Delbert? Are you all right?”
“Oh, yes. Yes, I'm fine.” Doppler shivered again and smiled shyly. “It's...just been quite a while since anyone touched me like that.”
“Like...this?” Sarah stroked his ear again, producing the same result. She chuckled at the look on his face as he shook himself and looked down at her.
“Like that.”
Sarah couldn't suppress a chuckle. “I had no idea.”
“Then it was a good guess,” Doppler kissed her. He ran a hand down her flank to her waist, making her sigh happily and shift her body underneath him, bringing him further on top of her. He stroked a lock of her dark brown hair out of her face and slid a hand around behind her. Sarah exhaled and arched her back, bringing her chest to a prominence that made Doppler's breath catch in his throat.
“S...Sarah...”
“It's all right.” She kissed him. “I want this.”
Doppler felt her hands at his throat, threading the silk ascot from around his neck and beginning to open the buttons on his waistcoat and shirt. He felt her slide her hands inside, running her fingers through the fur of his chest.
“Oh, Delbert...your heart's racing.”
Blushing, Doppler rested his palm on her breast. “So is yours.”
Sarah sighed at his touch. Doppler suddenly realised where his hand was and withdrew it hastily, stammering an apology as he sat up.
“Oh! I'm so sorry, I – I didn't mean to -”
“It's all right.” Sarah sat up as well. “Delbert...I thought we agreed about this...”
“We did, of course.” Doppler bit his lip. “I just wouldn't want you to think that I'm the kind of male who just...well, you know...”
“I could never think that about you.” Sarah held his hand. “In fact...”
Doppler saw her lift her holocket off over her head and put it carefully aside before she began opening the buttons on her maroon vest. Understanding, Doppler fumbled with the last of his shirt buttons and finally shrugged it off, feeling a little self-conscious. He looked up to see Sarah draping her vest over the back of the couch and then standing up in front of him. He opened his mouth to ask what she was doing, but froze when he saw her pulling her dress from her shoulders. It fell loosely to her waist, and she slowly worked it over her hips, taking her underwear with it before she finally stepped free of the garment.
“Oh, my...Sarah...” Doppler's eyes were wide as they beheld her naked body.
“Like I said...” Sarah's voice contained a hesitant note. “It's about trust. Right?”
Swallowing hard, Doppler nodded and took the hand Sarah offered him. He drew her closer to him, staying seated as he gazed up at her.
“Delbert?” Sarah's eyes were full of questions as they looked down at him. He raised his other hand and placed it on her bare hip, turning her to face him fully. She had just begun to regret her boldness when he closed his eyes and leaned forward, aiming for the place between her legs. Sarah's initial gasp of surprise quickly became a moan of pleasure as she realised what he was doing. His tongue was soft and broad and seemed to be able to touch her everywhere she wanted it to. She felt herself go weak at the knees and braced herself on Doppler's slender shoulders.
“Oh, my god...Delbert...”
It was an unexpected sensation, gentle yet firm. His hand on her waist kept her where he needed her. When he broke off for a moment to draw breath and looked up at her, he was rewarded with a view of her breasts, their nipples hard and well-defined, and beyond them her flushed face and eyes closed in rapture. It was all the encouragement he needed and he returned to her secret, learning her taste and the shapes of her most intimate anatomy. Luxuriating in the feelings he was gifting her, Sarah tucked a strand of hair behind her ear and sighed happily.
“Dear Sarah,” Doppler whispered. “You are truly wonderful.”
“Delbert...oh, if only you knew...that feels incredible.”
He lapped at her warmly, sending waves of sensation through her body. He felt a shudder run through her and raised his head, running his lips over her stomach. Their place between her legs was taken by one of his hands and the touch of his padded fingers was, if anything, even more intoxicating. Doppler watched her face for guidance on what to do, finding his way to her centre and massaging it gently. Confident that he had found it, he lowered his head again and replaced his finger with his tongue. Sarah's head fell forward and she moaned in delight. She had never felt anything like this before – certainly Leland had never lavished this kind of attention on her. And how long had it been anyway? Eight months? Nine? Ten? She and Leland had grown as physically distant as they had emotionally, and her body responded to her friend's every touch with hunger.
“Oh, my...that's...oh, Delbert...don't stop...”
“I won't,” he whispered a promise.
Sarah clasped a hand to the back of his head, stroking his ear on the way and producing the expected reaction and a pleasant increase in his efforts. By some trick of the angle of his head, his tongue found her entrance and slid inside her. Waves of sensation washed through her and she braced herself.
“Delbert...my god, Delbert...!”
It was all she could do to remain standing. It was a slow climax, but no less intense for all of that. She gripped his hair in her hand, her breath coming in pants between her shaking lips. She closed her eyes and watched silver stars exploding behind them. He withdrew his tongue, kissed her tenderly, and stood up, wrapping his arms around her breathless body. She clung to him as she regained her composure, meeting his lips in a deep, heartfelt kiss.
“Delbert...that was amazing...”
He nuzzled her and kissed her again. “I'm glad it was all right.”
“All right?” Sarah laughed, wondering at how carefree she now felt. “It was a lot more than just all right, let me tell you.”
“Well, if you say so.” Doppler smiled modestly. “I'd be a poor canid if I couldn't do that. I'm just relieved that it works on humans.”
Sarah smiled. “Your felinids are very lucky if that's the kind of thing they can expect from you. Thank you.”
“It's more than all right.” Doppler kissed her. She responded with unexpected fervour, stroking a hand down Doppler's chest, through the mass of soft fur at its centre, and then down his stomach. His eyes widened as she reached his waist and began exploring the shape of him through his trousers.
“Oh, Sarah!”
“I'd...like to return the favour, if it's all the same to you...” She looked up at him as she knelt, unthreading his belt. Though she wouldn't admit it and was trying not to show it, there was a certain sense of anticipation inside her. Her brief caresses had felt that Doppler was aroused, but his shape had been unfamiliar and she was curious about this aspect of canid masculinity. She guided him onto the couch and helped him to remove his leggings and breeches.
“Um, I should warn you,” Doppler was blushing hotly. “I, er, think that my species isn't made like yours in certain respects...”
“I know.” Sarah kissed him. “And I don't care. I'm sure you're just as beautiful on the outside as you are on the inside, Delbert”
“Oh, Sarah.” Doppler kissed her back. “I hope I'm worthy of that.”
Maintaining the kiss, Sarah drew down his underwear and finally caught sight of his manhood. Her breath caught as she ran her eyes over it.
“Oh, my...may...may I touch you?”
Doppler nodded, taking her hand. “Of course. I trust you.”
She squeezed his hand in thanks and turned her attention to his arousal. With delicate fingers, she drew back his soft furry sheath to fully expose his erection. It was as warm and hard to the touch as a human's, but of an intriguingly different shape and with a pronounced knot at its base. Doppler whimpered as she explored it with her fingers, stroking its length down and questing between his legs. In that area, at least, his anatomy seemed similar to human, though she discovered to her secret delight a small, well-groomed tuft of tail from his hindquarters.
“Like I said,” she whispered. “Beautiful.”
Doppler sighed with relief. “Oh, Sarah...it's such a blessing to hear you say that.”
She smiled and took hold of his erection, raising it to her lips. He froze at the light touch of the first kiss she bestowed on it and gave a yelp of shock as she took the tip of it in her mouth, arching his back momentarily, his fur standing on end. She learned the shape of him with her tongue, probing here, gliding there. He tasted different to a human, but not at all unpleasant and she massaged him with her fingers. He groaned her name as his head rolled back and she found herself wondering just how long it had been since his last time with someone. A long time, presumably, if it had been before his doctorate. Too long. There was no justice.
“Delbert,” she sighed.
“Sarah.” Doppler adjusted his glasses. “Oh, my goodness...what you're doing there...”
“I hope it's all right?”
Doppler managed a laugh. “It's more than all right. But...you don't have to if you don't want to.”
“But I do want to,” Sarah came closer to him as he sat up, touching a hand to his shoulder tenderly even as she kept the other on his manhood. “I want you to enjoy this.”
Doppler sighed into the kiss she planted on his lips as she resumed her massaging. “I assure you that I am. You're a beautiful woman, Sarah Hawkins. And you're a good friend.”
“I hope I am to you, too,” Sarah stroked his cheek. “You deserve it.”
Doppler blushed and kissed her. “To be worthy of your friendship is truly a gift, dear Sarah.”
Sarah closed her eyes and kissed him deeply. He reciprocated, but was unable to hold back a whimper as her fingers closed around his knot, caressing and squeezing it experimentally. It was starting to hold a distinct fascination for her.
“Can we keep going, Delbert?” she whispered.
“Keep...going?” Doppler blinked. “I don't – oh...are you sure?”
Sarah nodded, but looked hesitant for a moment. “Yes, but...it'll be safe, right? I mean...there's no chance of anything happening accidentally?”
“I'm not sure that I follow – ah. I see. Of course.” Doppler shook his head. “No. After all, we're different species. It'd be impossible.”
Sarah nodded with relief. “And is it all right with you?”
“Of course.” Doppler touched her cheek. “I've always thought of you as very attractive.”
“No, I mean...there won't be any going back to the way our friendship was,” Sarah said quietly. “You know that, don't you?”
Doppler smiled reassuringly. “I think we've crossed a few bridges already, Sarah. I trust you. And I hope you trust me too.”
“Always.” Sarah kissed him. “Thank you.”
Doppler held her hand as she moved to mount him, straddling him on the couch and guiding him to her entrance. He shivered as he felt his tip press into her, and met her eyes. A wordless assent passed between them, and she let him proceed. Their hands clutched tightly as he penetrated her, inch by inch, until she reached his knot. Sarah took a moment to adjust her position and become accustomed to his presence inside her. She looked down at him, smiling at the expression on his face as she leaned down to kiss him, loose hair falling down around their faces.
“I wish I'd met you eight years ago, Delbert Doppler,” she murmured.
Doppler smiled. “I don't think you'd have liked me much back then. I was never what you'd call the life of the party.”
“But you would have been a gentleman,” said Sarah, stroking his hair. “I hope Mary knew how lucky she was.”
“And Leland should have known how lucky he was.” Doppler kissed her. “I certainly know how lucky I am.”
Sarah smiled and began moving on him, the sensations silencing them both. Doppler rested a hand on her hips to brace her and rested his other one on her side, the thumb just below her breast. As their movements grew more passionate, the movement of her breasts became too much for him to ignore.
“God, yes...” Sarah breathed ecstatically and tossed her head back to get her hair out of the way. The movement, however, also perfectly exposed her chest and she gasped as Doppler's mouth closed on a breast. That soft, skilful tongue of his caressed skin of the nipple for a moment before he moved his hand up her body. His padded thumb brought the dark nipple to full attention before he soothed it with his mouth, making her feel like she was melting. Then he moved to her other breast, repeating the performance. Sarah clutched at him, gripping his shoulder fur in her fingers.
“Oh, Delbert!”
“Dear Sarah.” Doppler looked up at her adoringly. She smiled and kissed his nose before returning to her movements, growing bolder and pressing down more firmly on his knot. The feeling of it at her entrance was enticing, and it certainly provoked a reaction from him, a low growl rising in his throat the more pressure she applied. She placed as much weight as she dared on it, gasping in wonder.
“Do you think we could...use that?” she breathed.
Doppler hesitated. “Er...well, I'm not sure...I mean, not sure how compatible your anatomy is...”
“Could we...try?” Sarah asked shyly. “I'd like to see how you feel...all of you.”
“Well...if you're sure.” Doppler sat up and kissed her. “Er...could you climb off me, please? And face away on the carpet?”
Sarah obeyed, easing herself off him and turning away from Doppler, facing the fireplace, her knees sunk deep into the soft rug. She was still wondering why he had asked this of her when she felt his mouth at her neck and his hands on her shoulders, pushing her gently forwards.
“Like this, Sarah,” Doppler whispered. “If you don't mind...”
On all fours, completely exposed to him, Sarah blushed but nodded.
“I think it'll be easier this way,” Doppler explained, positioning himself. It was easier to enter her from this direction and soon enough his knot was pressed hard into her wetness. She moaned in anticipation and felt his hot breath on her neck and shoulders, scattering rough kisses and licks. It was as if he was searching for something.
“Of course,” he muttered. “You don't have...well, never mind. Are you really sure you want this, Sarah? There's...no going back once it's done.”
“I know.” Sarah gripped the rug in her hands. “Please, Delbert.”
“Then hang on.” Doppler kissed her. “And you can tell me to stop if you want.”
“I know. I – ah!” Sarah's eyes flew wide as he pressed deeper into her. He slid an arm around her, cupping her breasts and adjusting her position. He was torn between deciding whether to thrust into her, ending the strain of entry more quickly but also irrevocably, and going more slowly to give her more time to choose.
“Oh, my...Delbert...” Sarah bit her lip. Doppler held her more closely, bending over her as he completed their joining. A cry escaped Sarah's throat as the bulge of his knot pushed inside and sealed her. The momentary pain of its passage faded and was replaced by an unexpected feeling of fulfilment. She had never been so physically close to anyone before and it took her a few breaths to get used to it.
“Are you all right?” Doppler asked anxiously.
Sarah exhaled. “Yeah...I'm fine...oh, more than fine...I've never felt anything like this...”
“Are you sure?”
She moaned and nodded. He was almost lying atop her now, and she was enjoying the feeling of his fur on the bare skin of her back. Every movement they made shifted him inside her, massaging away any lingering discomfort as she became accustomed to his canid presence. It was clear that he was still treating her with care and delicacy as he began thrusting, but since the knot inhibited movement in one direction he inevitably began pushing her forward. Awash with sensations, she was happy to permit it, sinking gratefully down into the soft, yielding rug. She couldn't remember the last time she had surrendered herself so freely – couldn't even remember if she ever had – but she knew that she was safe and so she placed her trust in her friend.
“Dear Sarah,” Doppler stroked her hair away from the nape of her neck and and placed an adoring kiss on the skin it revealed. “I'm...I'm lost for words, I...”
Sarah turned her head and found his lips. “You don't have to say anything, Delbert...just...please keep going...”
Doppler kissed her back. Stopping was the last thing on his mind. Sarah's body was doing things to him he'd almost forgotten about, and it was taking an effort of will to restrain his more animal instincts as the urgency of his pleasure grew. The smoothness of her skin was as intriguing to him as his fur was to her and he revelled in the feeling of it against him as he stroked her and pressed himself against her. He shifted his position slightly to thrust still deeper into her, touching a part of her that made her eyes fly open. She reared up, her breasts moving freely and rhythmically under her, but Doppler's height and weight were behind her and pushed her back onto all fours. She capitulated, feeling his movements grow in intensity as she moaned his name.
“Delbert...Delbert...”
“I'm here, Sarah,” Doppler shuddered. “Oh...and...I'm...I can feel it...”
“I want it, Delbert,” Sarah bit her lip as a wave of pleasure rolled through her. “Please...”
Doppler moaned. “Sarah...my dear Sarah...oh, stars, yes!”
Sarah's eye went wide as she felt his climax inside her. His member swelled before it released, and pulsed as it pumped his seed into her. It was all she could bear and she cried out in ecstasy as she joined him in orgasm. He whined as he felt her muscles milking him, drawing out everything he had, and he collapsed over her, his hips still working even as his breath came in pants.
“Oh, Sarah...Sarah...oh, my...I've never...”
“Delbert.” Sarah kissed him as they subsided onto the rug. She felt warm and contended, and absolutely fulfilled in every sense of the word. She made to draw away from him so she could turn into his embrace, but a hand on her shoulder stopped her.
“No, don't...I don't think it'll work...”
“Why not?” Sarah shifted her hips experimentally and was surprised at how hard his knot still was. Its bulge made it disengaging from him difficult and probably rather painful in her sensitive state. “Oh. Um, how long will that last?”
“Er....ten...fifteen minutes?” Doppler hazarded. “I probably should have warned you...it's an important part of mating for my species...”
“I bet it is,” Sarah smiled with satisfaction and settled back into him, marvelling that his species appeared to have evolved to be physically compelled to snuggle after sex...in stark contrast, she briefly thought, to most human males she'd heard of. It was so much better like this, feeling his fur against her, nestling into him, his arms wrapped around her protectively. “Not to worry.”
Doppler sighed with relief. “I'm glad you don't mind.”
“It's different.” Sarah reached up behind her and tousled his hair and floppy right ear. “But not bad.”
“Thank you.” Doppler kissed her and lay back, holding her close and trying to remember the last time he'd felt as contented. “Not just for that, I mean. But for...well, for trusting me.”
“The trust is mutual.” Sarah patted his hand and moved it up from her stomach to her breast. “After all...we're friends, right?”
“Friends always.” Doppler smiled. “Notwithstanding the fact that we're currently, er...”
“Exactly.” Sarah sighed happily.
“There's a bathroom just down the hall if you need it,” said Doppler. “And-”
“It's all right.” Sarah squeezed his hand. “Do you mind if we just...quietly stay here for now?”
“Naturally.” Doppler squeezed back. “And...Sarah?”
“Yes?”
“I know we said this didn't have to mean anything...and I know that we're still just friends, but...the things that I said, about how beautiful you are...”
“Yes?” Sarah felt herself beginning to blush.
“Well...” Doppler swallowed nervously. “I meant them. And not just in the moment, but always. You know that, don't you?”
“I could never doubt you, Delbert.” Sarah paused. “And...you know I meant it all about you, too?”
“I do.” Doppler nuzzled her.
There was a low roll of thunder overhead and the heavy clouds began raining. Droplets began drawing their tracks down the long windows of the living room. Doppler and Sarah lay together and watched them, basking in each other's warmth.
