Pitch Black paced restlessly in his lair. It had been nearly one year since Pitch had been defeated by the Guardians and he felt such a hatred toward them. He was the King of Nightmares! Once feared and respected and most of all, believed in. Now he was reduced to hiding under beds, yet again. Turning dreams into nightmares where he could and feeding off of that fear to give him power, since hardly any children believed in him anymore. Fear alone could sustain the Nightmare King, but Belief was what he thrived upon. Comparatively, it was like the difference between rations of bread and water or a veritable banquet.
Ugh, he was so frustrated! He was tired of being weak and hated. Tired of hiding under beds. Tired of being cast out and not believed in! Tired of being . . . . .well, alone.
An idea came to his mind just then. A dark, wicked idea which brought an evil grin to his face. If he could get even one person to believe. Just one. He wouldn't have to be alone anymore. He could share his dark existence with someone. There was no reason why he should suffer alone. After all, misery loves company, and if he had a partner, together, they could become all the more powerful! And, he thought mischievously, he had just the person in mind. Though, the one he had in mind would not be likely to cooperate. The face of a young woman flashed across his memory. But first, he would have to make her believe. Once she could see him, then he would worry about how to gain her cooperation.
With a plan forming in his brain, he waved his arm, enveloping himself in a cloak of shadows. He went soaring out of the hole in the ground that was located deep in the forest, underneath the skeleton of an old bed. His home. He flew through the air, using the shadows to quicken his speed, and made his way to a nearby town. It was nighttime. The sandman, punctual as ever, the little sotter, was already well at work with his dreamsand. Bringing joy and hope to all the little children through happy dreams. It was enough to make Pitch sick. He kept to the shadows, not wanting to reveal his presence to the Guardian as he started toward the home at the end of the street. Taking advantage of the darkness in which he felt the most comfortable, he traveled through the shadows, and entered the home. Through the window he flew, into the room of a young woman. He had been watching her since she was a child, when he used to plague her dreams with nightmares. Like all children do, she had grown up and stopped believing in things such as the Boogeyman, Santa Clause, the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy. She had sparked his interest for years, however, because of all the children he had frightened, of all the nightmares he created & fear he caused, hers had always given him the most power of any one child. Whenever she had felt fear, he would sense it from miles away causing him to shudder with pleasure and boosting him with strength. As he appeared in her room, he hid in the shadows and watched the young woman with appreciative eyes. She had to have been about 21 now. With her dark hair and eyes, soft voice and bright smile, he found her very alluring.
Confidant that she couldn't see him, he stood in the shadows, waiting, his seething anger at his current predicament and growing excitement over what was to come further fueling his powers.
Adriana Stone was just getting ready for bed. She hummed to herself softly, as she switched off the lights and turned as Pitch's eyes raked her form, studying her intently. She was pretty, with short, dark hair cut in a pixie style, rich brown eyes & soft, pale skin. She seemed to have curves in all the right places, too. Her voice was soft and sweet as she hummed a melody he did not recognize. She loved to sing and would often hum or break out into quiet song without even realizing it. Suddenly she stopped, and turned again, seemingly staring right at Pitch. He took a sharp intake of breath. It felt like something pierced his chest when he looked into her eyes. 'Can she see me?' He thought. 'Surely not. She would be screaming in fright right now.' That thought made him relax a bit.
She seemed confused for a moment as her eyes narrowed & she tilted her head slightly. 'That's strange.' She thought to herself. 'For a moment, I felt as though I wasn't alone.' Then, shrugging it off, she turned again, walking across the floor and entering a closet, she closed the door behind her and flicked on the lights. After a few minutes, she emerged, wearing a tank top & a pair of pajama pants to sleep in. She crossed the room again and climbed into bed, shifting under the covers.
Yet Pitch couldn't take his eyes off of her. She would be perfect for him. If he could convince her to see things his way, that is. He would need to observe her for awhile before acting out his plans.
After some time, she appeared to fall asleep...and the familiar, golden strands of the Sandman's work entered the window to form shapes over her head.
She was dreaming...
The girl appeared to be dreaming about . . .love? 'Oh how sweet.' Pitch thought, snidely. With a sneer, he approached her bed. The image was of her & a handsome young man, dancing together and laughing.
"Hmm...I wonder..." Pitch added, leaning forward to examine the dream further.
Slowly, he reached out his finger and ever so slightly grazed the golden sand. As soon as his finger touched it, a black spot began to form...one that seemed to get larger and swirled, taking on different shapes. Suddenly, the young man in the dream had transformed into a hideous beast, while the girl screamed & tried to pull away. Adriana cringed in her sleep & started moaning softly. Pitch felt her fear & smiled wickedly, absorbing its power. 'Delicious.' He thought, feeling ecstatic. 'You provide me with so much power, my dear one.'
