Chapter One: "Beautiful Monsters"
Four and a half years after it began, things started to go wrong.
Ben dressed in swim trunks, and sandals, stepped on an odd purple flower as he dropped a picnic basket.
"Why did we have to hike all the way to the far side of the lake?"
Gwen dressed in a large floppy hat, a loose T-shirt over a white swimsuit and flip-flops set down a large sun umbrella, and began taking off a backpack.
"I don't know why Ben, I just always liked it here. Grandpa Max used to bring me fishing here and I never wanted to leave. Besides, did you want another birthday party with our parents? I am not wearing a paper hat for a million pictures. "
Ben kicked off his sandals, and produced a box of frozen hamburgers from the picnic basket.
"My mom is a annoying with the photographer thing isn't she? I swear I could make a flip book out of her pictures of my first birthday."
Gwen smiled a wicked little smile.
"Even the part where I smashed the cake in your face and you cried?"
"Bitch."
Ben barked.
Gwen made an angry scowl.
"Ben!"
He held up a large grill lighter.
"Not you! This lighter thing, it's not working. Would you mind lighting the grill with your powers?"
Gwen looked around nervously.
"Is that smart? Someone could see us it a great day for coming here."
Ben fiddled with the lighter angrily.
"Naa there's no power outlets, or running water on this side of the lake. The building with all the bathrooms looks like it's been boarded up for like ever. Of course, none of that matters when you are here with Grandpa and you have an RV that has all that stuff. "
Gwen looked more worried.
"So we don't have a bathroom over here?"
Ben tossed the grill lighter away in frustration.
"There is an outhouse or whatever you call those portable bathrooms. Can you light the grill please? I'm hungry, and it's this or brownies, chips, and hamburger rolls."
Gwen took off her floppy hat and walked over to the grill.
"I guess we can eat before we leave."
Ben chuckled at her. The plan was to camp here for the weekend.
"It's a nasty outhouse; you have fought mutant bug men, alien warlords, and whatever the heck Charmcaster counts as. Yet you Gwen Tennyson are afraid of a nasty outhouse?"
Gwen blushed and looked away.
"It's gross!"
Ben broke into a laugh, it was loud and infectious, and Gwen couldn't help but start to laugh herself. The outhouse would be dirty but they'd be fine using it. She spoke while blinking tears out of her eyes.
"Fourteen birthdays with you, and you drove me nuts every time! Today for my fifteenth, I finally get to do anything that I want! STILL I spend it with you. I must be crazy."
Ben fumbled with the picnic basket while still chuckling.
"Naa we just work well together. Well I need to take stuff more seriously, and you need to relax more. See theirs what do you call it symmetry or whatever."
Ben pulled out two large baking trays, and passed put them down on a nearby picnic table. Gwen looked around one more time and didn't see anyone or anything around. Then she removed her hat, and walked to the grill.
"Incendia."
A small fire came to life, and Ben started cooking as Gwen sat at the table with the trays. Looking at them, she noticed they were full of homemade chocolate brownies, and she let out an approving little sound.
"Oooo."
She noticed Ben looking over his shoulder as she ate one.
"Like those do ya? I made them myself."
She smiled.
"Yea when did you learn to cook?"
Ben dodged the question.
"It's an old recipe of my parents that I found it in the garage a few weeks ago."
Gwen kept eating, until Ben walked over with a plate of burgers. She switched to a burger digging in with more zeal than normal.
"Good burgers."
"Like them do ya?"
Gwen grunted though a mouthful of burger.
"Mmmmhhhhuu, I forgot to eat breakfast this morning."
"I better catch up then."
Ben turned from his half-eaten burger and smooshed two brownies together and started eating them. Gwen looked on giggling.
"Did you burn your burger?"
Ben ducked the question.
"So what you get me for my birthday?"
"Oh yea let me get my bag."
Gwen dug out a bundle from her backpack, and handed it to her cousin. Ben tore into the packaging to reveal a greed jacket with white strips on one arm, and a black circle on one side with the number 10 at its center. Ben smiled a broad smile with bits of chocolate brownie showing on his teeth.
"Wow this is really great Gwen I don't know what to say really, it's amazing."
Gwen grabbed yet another brownie and took a bite before speaking.
"So what did you get me?"
Ben paused awkwardly, and tried to cover it up by wolfing down another brownie.
"Ummm, Ben if you're broke that's OK."
Ben's face broke into a smile. It was a smile Gwen had seen before. The smile of a mischievous little brat she spent a summer with forever ago that knew he was getting away with something.
"No, I made brownies."
Gwen looked confused.
"What are you talking about Ben?"
"Well you know how my parents are hippy tree huggers? Well I found there recipe for pot brownies. "
Gwen snapped sounding like an angry schoolteacher.
"What? BEN this is illegal! This is why you wanted to be on other side of the lake because I couldn't KILL you with all the witnesses!"
Ben laughed.
"You should see your face PRICELESS! An adventure is what I wanted, because I haven't had a real one for a long time. This is what passes for that for normal people. You're the one with me on all my good adventures Gwen."
Gwen looked down at the half-empty tray of brownies; there was a whole other tray they hadn't touched yet. She didn't have a job, and her school didn't drug test. IF there was a police officer here RIGHT NOW, he wouldn't know anything unless she herself walked over and told him. Gwen picked up a brownie, and contemplated it.
"This is so totally you. You get something in your head that is just insane and stupid, and somehow you just manage to pull it off. One of these days Ben Tennyson I'm going to figure out if you're a brilliant underachiever or just a lucky idiot."
Ben put on a clueless expression, and pulled the Omnitrix out of the basket.
"Does this mean I don't need this to stay alive?"
Gwen started to laugh again.
"You brought the watch? You brought THE WATCH. You thought, "I'd be like you put what in the food?" and you'd need it to stop me from getting all glowie on you? Hahahaha."
Ben put the watch back in the basket.
"I had to be sure you wouldn't be all DWEEB! And just dive at me."
The pair laughed, and ate, and laughed some more. Talked about old times, battles fought, and victories hard won. About a time so long ago when they learned that the world didn't stop at the sky. That bizarre notion made everything seemed so small after that. Before they knew it, the sun was hanging low on the horizon and there was a chill in the air. They lay on sleeping bags watching the sunset, and eating brownies. Gwen was about to fall asleep when Ben spoke.
"You know I worry about you sometimes Gwen."
Gwen spoke and sounded groggy.
"What why?"
Ben spoke sincerely.
"A lot of people become doctors or lawyers and do plenty of good, but you and me we've seen what's out there and we know what's coming. Stars will be out soon, no reason to close your eyes and ignore them."
Gwen sat up.
"I know we got a look at that once didn't we? Ben 10,000 and a city full of aliens on earth. It's just Mom she's always wanted both her kids to be like her. One of those people that's good at being normal, and fine with a life inside the box."
Ben sat looked up at her though sleepy eyes.
"She's got your brother for that, and he can't glow in the dark. You can do something that makes you special, you should go with that, because not everyone has the chance you know. "
Gwen looked out over the lake, and with a thought, her eyes and hands glowed with a bright purple light.
"I know I love the magic thing and all but. . ."
Something caught her eye, and she trailed off looking down at Ben.
"Would you look at that?"
"What do I look cool in magic'o vision?"
"No it's a Dragon Road, a lay line. A natural current of magic power it runs right though the area. It's beautiful, and you're lying right inside it. "
Ben closed his eyes.
"I'll take your word for it, I guess."
"No really this looks amazing!"
"Umm Gwen I got an alien watch not a spell book remember?"
Gwen held out her hand and her backpack unzipped itself, and said spell book flew to her.
"Something in here that will let you look though my eyes I think. Here we go same end of the book as that body-switching spell Charmcaster hit us with that one time. This must be the mind magic end of the book."
Ben sat up, and looked over at Gwen covered in the light of her magic as the sun at long last set.
"You're not going to screw with my brain are you? I don't use it much but it's the only one I have.
" Gwen flipped thought the pages.
"Here we go! Oh and no the spells got a clause that makes it only work on the willing so your safe."
Gwen laid the book out on the ground it's only half-understood words looking back at her. The spell itself she'd deciphered long ago, most of the text around it she couldn't. What she didn't know was parts of that book where compiled from other books to create a comprehensive single volume. Parts of the document where written in dialects far older than others. Making translations more difficult for the self educated. The book was actually a labor of love by a father that knew he wouldn't live to see his daughter grow up. A snapshot of a thousand years of a cultures magical study the author knew she'd be able to read and understand. The author of course knew all that because of everything she'd already learned at his knee growing up, up to that point. The book was meant to teach her everything ELSE, she'd NEED to know if she never saw another magical text. Including making sure her wedding was a happy one.
Most of that was sadly lost on the books current owner. The spell in question for example was in ancient times meant to ensure that marriages of political nature where not based on treachery by allowing the couple to see into each other's minds. A flightily intimate experience, meant only for two people that intended to spend their lives with each other. It was intended to make sure you knew who you where getting in bed with. Gwen was right the spell did have a clause in it to shield the unsure or unwilling meant as a last out, for anyone before they said, "I do".
It was also however a rock hard cultural custom for the people that wrote it, that brides and grooms to be, also be stone sober until AFTER the ceremony.
"Open hearts, open minds. See what I've seen, and allow me to do the same."
Incantations complete, and powers align. Two minds never meant to connect opened to one another, and two destinies meant only to coincide where tied to one another. None of this bound by magic, only by choice and consequence. The floodgates of the mind opened and two people in the same heartbeat learned more about one another than they ever wanted to know.
Gwen could see Ben's life though his own eyes, and what he thought of her. She could see into the limited mind of a child that while never spoiled. That child never had to compete for attention unless it was his birthday. THE one day that was supposed to be all about HIM and he had to share it with GWEN. Through a child's eyes, she could see their age-old contest begin. Bickering, and grabs for attention. Pranks and counter pranks. The game goes on until him almost without knowing it learned to love having her around for that reason. ALMOST that is. Ben really is just a bit smarter and on top of things then he lets on. Time passes and children grow, bratty kids turn into preteens, and one summer so very long ago lives change and Ben stumbles onto something new. Ben had POWER after that, and all the good and bad that came with it. This is it; finally, he wins the game, and all the attention and glory for her forever. Except he doesn't, because somehow even with all the watch, that everything bad in the entire universe seems to want Gwen still manages to show him up every once in a while. It's annoying as hell, but damn impressive. Then she stumbles onto power herself. A lucky charm, a magic book, whatever. The how didn't matter to him. What did was she was like him now, apart from the crowd. The Gwen though Ben's eyes was maddening all over again. Always reminding him power isn't anything if you just screw around, being a hero is something else. Annoying as hell, but damn impressive. Then IT happens. Young Ben screws with the watch one time too many, and the world almost blows up. To fix it, he has to go to Xenon, THE WORST place in the universe, and he almost loses her. Gwen watches her younger self be carried off by monsters, and it really was harder for Ben to watch then her to live though. He realized he cared about her great deal and that her lose would be more then he could take. She turned out to be ok, and of course, he doesn't tell her what he felt not really. Time rolls on, and as all things must summers end arrives, and he's forced back into the pain of a normal life. "How can people do this?"Young Ben thinks to himself. He's already made up his mind to go to the stars as soon as he can, but that is forever away with years of school, and everyday life that don't mean anything compared to what's out there. He still had Gwen though, and "she understood," he thinks, or rather he hopes she did. It would be a shame as amazing as she can be tied to the earth when she could so easily touch the stars. Gwen saw her cousin's imager of her change the older they grew. The taller they got, the more she let her hair grow the more he noticed she was beautiful. Cash and JT noticed too because Ben over heard them saying a few thing about her ass once in math class. A few tacks on their chairs made them think about their own asses. Totally worth the detention. Elena Validus came along like a whirlwind and girls in general become something to think about. Elena is pretty smart, and as a bonus, she really annoys Gwen. Then just like that, she's gone and that sucks worse than Ben thought anything could. Gwen's still here though, and that matters more now for some reason. At last we come to now sophomore year of high school, just far enough through to make anyone with their head on straight think about life after graduation at least once or twice. That trip to the stars HAS to be coming . . . but if he goes and Gwen doesn't that's the same as Gwen going away, and that would hurt too much. The plan for this weekend fills her mind, and she cries one single tear because it was all so beautiful. Then it hits her mind that Ben's already looked into her just as much. Young Gwen see's Ben as the brat that her mother tells her "acts like he was raised in a barn with animals." Gwen agrees with her because she always does, but feels sad after. Mom is so smart and pretty, she wants her Gwen to be the best that she can be. Ben sees a life defined by being the apple of her mother's eye. And yes he is smart enough to notices that no it's not that Gwen didn't enjoy being an over achiever, just the reason behind the reason Gwen never admitted. When she turned nine, Grandpa max puts trick candles on their birthday cake that you can't blow out without them relighting and Mom is pisses because "it was a trailer park magic trick " and it "made them look trashy " to the guests at the party. Ben calls Gwen's Mom "stuck up" under his breath, and Gwen hears. She should be mad but she can't stop smiling.
Ben's good for things like that when he's not being annoying.
Then a year later some things happen last minute, chaos infects the order of her pre planned summer vacation and she ends up spending it with Grandpa Max which is great, and Ben that is not great, because he was raised in a barn with animals.
Then the world goes crazier every day. Aliens are real; Grandpa is a retired superhero, and Ben dumb lucks into something special. He finds a watch that makes him even weirder then he already is, but Ben being Ben he makes it work. Most of the time that is. Between being weirded out every day, and learning to deal with near death experiences Ben changes in her eyes. He's stupid, annoying, and doesn't live up to to to to . . . SOMETHING he should be doing, but he's trying to be a hero. He needs someone to smack him back to reality ever once in a while, but hay smacking Ben has always been fun!
Lives were saved, days were survived, secrets were learned. . . . Dear oh dear did they learn secrets that summer. Then Gwen chances onto power of her own, and damn did that feel good. She's ashamed deep down to admit it, but she felt powerless around that watch, and now the world and all its weirdness can bring it on! Except if the rest of the universe has space ships and every alien knows about every other alien like some bad startrek re run and earth doesn't does that make US weird and not them? Gwen don't want to be weird she wanted to fit in! You want to be the apple of Moms eye and she defiantly does NOT like weirdness! Mom doesn't like Ben either, and she's right about that . . . . Isn't she? Summer rolls on enemies come and go danger becomes not so bad, and kind of exciting. Bit by bit she welcomes the weirdness, and then. . . then it's all over. Then Gwen is back to Mom and school and clubs, and study and the million things she. ..She should JUST BE DOING OK!
Mom likes it when she sees all of it and she's proud. But every night Gwen takes out that magic book, and remembers the weirdness in a bright purple glow. It's over now the spell has done its job. Oh and Ben saw the lay-line he thought it was great and all. The spell was still going because neither of them cared to stop it.
What they don't know is when Gwen moved from sitting next to Ben to being on top of him. Her hands flat on the ground beside his head. Her green eyes locked with his. Gwen spoke, and because of the link, it echoed in two sets of ears, as well as two minds.
"If a bird is born in a cage, can it still fly? Would it even want too?"
Ben sees that single tear rolling down Gwen's face, and reaches up to wipe it away. They both feel it when they touch.
"I don't know anything about birds, but you're too pretty to cry."
Gwen leans down and kisses Ben, and they both felt that too. She broke the kiss, and began pulling off her loose fitting beach shirt. Her skin was pale and blemishless as the shirt made its way up over her flat stomach, at the same time as Ben hands found their way onto her hips. Gwen's face was flush as the shirt came over her head and she tossed it aside. The mix of the excitement and the alien sensation of feeling both sides of the encounter reached a fever pitch while Ben's hands reached up to her breasts and grabbed the pale white swimsuit top ripped the damn thing off like wrapping paper at Christmas. Her breasts fell free from their restraints, and Gwen took them in her hands and kneaded them like dough.
While Bens hands worked their way up her trim waist greedily Gwen locked eyes with Ben took her right breast in her mouth, and started sucking her nipple with an audible sound of taunting lust.
"Mmmmm!"
As her lips parted, her tong making a circular motion as she did. At that moment, Ben froze dead still, his total attention on his cousins glistening nipple. Gwen purred.
"Want?"
Ben snapped violently into motion shifting his weight to the right and rolling Gwen onto her back with savage force. He didn't speak but the spell sent a wave of pure raw animalistic NEED washing over the banks of Gwen's mind like summer storm. He ripped the lower portion of her swimsuit off with a snap, and he pulled himself out of his swim trunks. Ben's handsome young face took on a savage look as he barked out a single growl of a word and penetrated Gwen like a Neanderthal a captured mate.
"MINE!"
Gwen dug her nails into the soft earth and grass as he began thrusting in and out of her all the while bursts of bright purple light erupted from her hands eyes and mouth. As he continued waves of pure ecstasy filled them both before echoing through the misused spell and back out into the lover on the other side. All the while Gwen cackled like a lunatic her powers spinning radically out of control to the point they interacted with the very lay line beneath them.
"HAHAHA ALL MINE HAHAHAHA!"
The raw lust charged mana lit up the lay line for a mile in either direction until they felt their own satisfaction, and then they felt each other's. The light show ended as the pair drifted into darkness glaring into each other's eyes transfixed by the beautiful monsters found there.
