Surface Prisoner Part 1 Allison trailed behind the rest of the other women, playing with her phone while they headed to the club. They all laughed and chatted about something that happened years before she met them. She frowned. Why even invite her? Since her family moved to the Lower East Side, she’d felt terribly lonely. It didn’t help that she spoke with an accent that fit better in the Upper East Side and other people constantly gave her grief about it. “Ya know, this is my last night as a free woman.” Said Lacey. “The least ya could do is be happy for me, Ally.” Allison rolled her eyes at her actual friend. “I am happy for you.” “Then act like it,” She whined. “Ya gotta get along with the rest of the wedding party.” “Yo, Lace.” Said another woman with black streaked blond hair. “Ya tell ‘er this was supposed to be a formal party. “What’s wrong with how I dressed tonight, Janessa?” Allison asked, knowing she’d tell her. “Well, first of all, ya dressed like ya going to an Old Navy photo shoot. Secondly, ya stank attitude makes ya look fat, and thirdly, ya don’t even try to talk to us since you got ya fancy Ivy League boyfriend.” The other three women cackled at her barbed observations. Allison didn’t really see what was wrong with her outfit. She only wore an orange-striped shirt and a jean skirt that came down to her knees. She tied her long brown hair into a ponytail but didn’t do anything elaborate with it. She just wanted to be comfortable. “…But tell me how you really feel.” Allison droned. “That ain’t true.” Said Lacey. “Ya both better get along. I’m the bride and I say so.” Janessa shot Allison a venomous glare and continued ahead. Lacey and Allison stood together watching them. “She’s really mad at me.” Lacey explained with a sad smile. “I’m the one marryin’ her ex. She can’t take it out on me cause she likes being in my bridal party. So she’ll take it out on my best friend.” “I’ll deal with it for you.” Ally said with a smile. “I just wish you wouldn’t hang out with her and her stupid friends.” “Well, her mom’s my boss so I kinda gotta.” Lacey shrugged. She hooked her arm into Allison’s. “C’mon, let’s go before those skanks leave us behind.” Allison’s phone buzzed again and she stopped. Seeing it was her boyfriend she picked it up. “I gotta take this Lace.” Allison said as an apology. “He’s pledging and I’m the only thing keeping him sane.” “Alright,” Lacey teased. “Ya get one freebie!” Giving her boyfriend casual words of encouragement, Allison trailed behind. Lacey already reunited with Janessa and she could see them. She ducked away and continued talking. “It’s gonna be okay, baby.” She cooed. “I know but I’m part of the wedding…okay…okay…bye…bye!” The women were across the street now, discussing how to get in the crowded club without staying in the ridiculously long line. Allison tucked her phone into her purse and checked the street. It was packed with cars and none of them were going at a reasonable speed for her to cross so she just waited. She and Lacey smiled at each other before she and Janessa laughed about something. It was the fakest laugh she’d ever heard. Her smile faded a little and she stepped out. Something yanked her into the darkness of the alley behind her and a rough hand muffled her scream. She struggled but a muscular arm pressed against her larynx until she fainted. Limp, she crumbled to the filthy ground. Her phone started ringing and she forced her lips to protest before succumbing to her injuries. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Water. All Allison could hear was rushing water. Her hair hung loose and brushed her face. Her feet dangled off the ground. Groaning, she tried to move but her arms and legs flopped around. “Lacey…” she moaned. A deep voice with a thick Lower East Side accent said, “She’s comin’ to.” A youthful voice chirped in. “She’s not gonna be a problem, dude.” “Where…” She muttered. “Now she’s askin’ questions.” The deeper voice griped. “I’d ratha keep ‘er quiet till we get to the lair.” Her vision started returning and she saw brick and mold. She tried to process her surroundings but it overwhelmed her and she fainted again. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Coming to, Allison was in an unfamiliar room. It looked like someone’s den. It was spacious room with a large flat screen, video games, and a few unfamiliar electronics. Someone furnished the clean area and it looked homey. Because of the lighting, her surroundings looked dark and colorless. This place held way too many shadows. A hand grabbed her and pushed her down on the couch. Searing light briefly blinded her and a force hoisted her upright and her moved her around until she stared into a pair of black eyes framed with purple fabric. These eyes were black like a shark and all she could see in them was her own frightened reflection. “Geez, don’t manhandle her, dude.” The stranger released her and stood upright, joined by two others. They all stared down at her with stoic faces. The petite young woman cowered in far corner of the couch under the scrutiny of these strange creatures. She stared back at them with fearful, dark eyes and pushed back a lock of wavy, brown hair out of her face. Racking her brain, she wondered if she’d done something to make herself a target. She didn’t dress provocative and she was mere feet away from her friends when she fell. “Cute, huh?” Said the one with an orange bandanna, his bright blue eyes sparkling. “I saw her and I just had to grab her!” “She’s not special.” The one in purple dismissed her. “…but reasonable. You could subdue her quickly so that’s a plus.” “You’ve already bruised her.” A voice stated. Another creature emerged from the shadows, this one in blue. “You should have exercised restraint and kept her intact.” “There’s no brain damage.” Said the purple one. “I checked. All her vitals responded perfectly—“ “Please let me go!” Ally begged on the verge of tears. “I won’t tell anyone I saw you…guys…” “If you did, who would believe you?” The purple one asked in a cool, level tone. “S…so you’ll let me go?” Ally said hopeful. “Of course not.” The purple one flashed her smile full of pearly white fangs. “Why would we let you go, hm?” “’s Mikey’s catch. He should decide what to do with ‘er.” Said the one in red. All attention in the room shifted to the orange turtle. He grinned, icy blue eyes twinkling merrily. “I think I’m gonna keep her!” He announced with childish glee. Allison grew ill. They were talking about her like she was furniture. Another frightening thought rose. What would they do if they decided they didn’t want her? She barely had time to ponder this when the orange one scooped her off her feet. With a scream, she struggled to get out of his grip but the creature merely laughed. “Dude, she’s got some crazy energy! C’mon, I’ll show you my room.” “No!” She screamed. “I don’t wanna go—“ “I could just knock you out.” He suggested while wresting with her. “In fact, that’s what’s gonna happen if you don’t…stay…still!” Allison lessened her struggle. She didn’t want anyone knocking her out again. Shaking, she reluctantly obeyed her captor. “You gonna be good?” He asked. Allison gave a rushed nod. Pleased, he continued up the stairs towards his room. “Don’t wait up for me guys.” ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
