Disclaimer: I do not own ANY of the concepts/characters in Transformers Prime. I do not write this story for financial profit. I simply want to give characters I care about more depth & diversity than they currently get in the show. |
Authors Note: This story is an Alternate Universe version of an AU story currently being created by Isoner over at Fanfiction.net. I wanted to do a tangent scene from his story, but not one that could effect his overall planned arcs so that’s why this is an AU of an AU (you want the next universe over!). Thanks to Isoner for his permission to play in his little part of the fan fiction universe.
This chapter is just setup/back-story. The good stuff happens next chapter.
Thanks for reading and please consider leaving a review!

Of Sacrifice and Friendship
Jasper, Nevada.
Literally, the middle of nowhere.
Desert for hundreds of miles in every direction. Rain was scarce enough that buying water from a company and having it trucked in was a safer bet than relying on Mother Nature to provide the much needed liquid.
When someone says ‘nothing ever happens here’ in Jasper they literally mean it.
Until Cobra came.
A ruthless terrorist organization lead by a madman called-what else-Cobra Commander had picked Jasper as a trial run for a new virus. Compound Z turned any living being into a literal zombie. No free will, no thoughts other than to kill and consume the flesh of the living; those they didn’t consume became the very creature that killed them.
It began slowly at first; a house here, an all-night diner there. Soon the plague spread throughout the town. Entire families were consumed in minutes; bloodlines hundreds of years old since the founding of the United States ended with the death of the youngest son or daughter. Mothers and fathers tried valiantly to defend their children from the zombies, only to become affected and consume the children they had given life to not so many years ago.
Cobra’s counterpart was a heroic, multi-national military force called G.I. Joe. Learning of the plague the Joes came into town and tried to help. But even with many Cobra agents captured the zombies still increased in record numbers; soon the walking dead were more numerous that the still-living.
But Jasper, Nevada had a secret. A secret that made the small, sleepy town truly more than meets the eye. In an abandoned missile silo a few miles outside the city limits there were five mechanical beings from the planet Cybertron that stood ready to save their adopted home.
They were known as Autobots, and their race was called…The Transformers.
With their home planet in stasis recovering from eons of civil war with their dark counterparts the Decepticons, Optimus Prime-leader of the shape shifting Autobots-came to Earth with his unit of followers. It was from that missile silo they worked to defend Jasper-and the world-from the evil forces of the Decepticons.
Helping out as best they could without revealing their true identities, Optimus and the others tried to save as many humans as they could from the infection. But even their awesome power wasn’t enough and it was only by revealing themselves to select members of the G.I. Joe team did they find a way to combine their abilities to stop the zombie invasion and save what was left of the town’s human population.
But the damage had been done. And the grief the Autobots felt at the loss of human life was compounded by the way those losses had hit home with their human allies Jack Darby, Miko Nakadai, and Rafael "Raf" Esquivel. Although Jack’s mother June escaped the infection and whose knowledge as a nurse was instrumental in developing a counter-agent against the virus spreading in case it mutated, the teen nearly lost her on several occasions and feels guilty about not having the power to protect her better. That guilt was further magnified by Miko’s loss of her two host parents, slain while trying to protect the girl from a zombie attack. Jack again holds himself accountable for not doing more to prevent their passing. But by far the greatest trauma was suffered by 12-and-a-half year old Raf. Unknown to the other kids or the Autobots, Raf was trapped in his home while his large family tore themselves apart as the virus took over. Forced to hide and watch in terror, his mother consumed his older brother and sisters while his father slain his own mother and consumed her. In an ironic twist of fate in death-just as in life-his family all but forgot about the young boy and left him alone in a dark house with only the blood of his slaughtered family to keep him company until he stumbled from the building and collapsed in the street.
That was two weeks ago. Since then, the boy hasn’t talked, barely eaten and spends hours at a time huddled in a dark corner, clutching a small screwdriver for protection against the nightmares he sees each time he closes his young eyes. Both counselors from the school and those in private practice could not get the boy to open up and reveal what had traumatized him so much. Even Bumblebee, Raf’s Autobot guardian, could not get him to reply to the simplest of questions. Agent William Fowler, the government’s liaison to the Autobots, had convinced Miko’s birth parents she was safe in federal care and with a new host family while in reality she was staying with the Autobots until such time air flights to and from the city were allowed and her parents could visit.
It was left unspoken that Miko might have to return home to Japan should her parents decide on that route. For now, the two older teens took turns watching over Raf, trying now and then to get some response from the boy. Hoping they might find the one right choice of words to unlock their friend’s mind, they prayed the next day would bring the young ‘tween back to them happy and whole once more.
But with each passing day, the pair of teens could feel Raf slipping further and further away. Miko knew that unless something drastic happened-and soon-they would lose their friend forever.
No one, not even Miko herself, could even guess she would be the one to bring Raf back and remove Jack’s growing anger and guilt.
And all it would cost her…was her innocence.
