"Gee, Freddie, why are so many cars leaving?" Daphne asked as the Mystery Machine rolled up the snowy road towards the Christmas Castle Inn.
"I don't know. The place is always packed on Christmas Eve."
Shaggy offered, "Well it's also a Christmas tree farm, so like maybe they're all just buying their trees at the last minute?"
"But there are no trees on the cars," Daphne answered.
After parking up front in the large and nearly empty parking lot they grabbed their bags and piled up many wrapped presents in Shaggy's arms, which he fumbled all the way to the entrance.
An older woman in a Christmas-themed turtleneck and long skirt was at the door, begging the frightened guests to stay, but they ignored her pleas.
Next to her were two men, the first a distinguished man in his mid-thirties, wearing a tuxedo and a frown. The other was older, dressed in overalls and a plaid flannel shirt which were stained with pine sap. "It's all just some stupid prank! Please, stay," he said in a gruff but kind voice.
"What's going on?" Daphne asked.
"Oh, it's terrible! Everyone's been frightened away by the Christmas tree monster," the woman explained. Then she introduced herself as Mrs. Tannenbaum, co-owner with her husband, the older gentleman.
The younger man scoffed. "A tree that cuts down people? Preposterous! If they're that stupid then good riddance."
"Snydington!" Mrs. Tannenbaum snapped.
"Without this business we're sunk," Mr. Tannenbaum said. Then he excused himself to close up the tree farm. Snydington huffed that they could call him if they needed anything before leaving too.
Daphne told Mrs. Tannenbaum they still wanted to check in. The grateful woman explained that the staff had left too, so they should just help themselves to anything. "It's a shame to let so much food go to waste," she sighed.
Shaggy's eyes brightened. "Well, me and Scoob will do our best to make sure that doesn't happen!" In a flash they'd run off towards the kitchen. Mrs. Tannenbaum then excused herself too, saying she was going to take a sleeping pill and rest.
"Well, it looks like we have a Christmas mystery on our hands," Fred commented.
"What a gift," Velma muttered.
The girls put the gang's gifts under the lovely tree in the lounge then brought their luggage to their rooms; Fred gathered wood from outside and built a fire in the enormous stone fireplace.
"What now?" Daphne asked.
Freddie answered, unsurprisingly, "We split up and search for clues."
"Well, Shaggy and Scooby have the kitchen covered," Velma laughed before heading to the stairs.
Fred and Daphne slowly walked towards the back hall, but once the sound of Velma's footsteps had faded Fred scooped Daphne up and plopped her onto a fluffy couch. They started making out in earnest.
Shaggy stared at his a three-foot tall sandwich, with more fixings than ghosts that had turned out to be fake. He glanced away to grab a pickle when Scooby swallowed Shaggy's gastronomical masterpiece in one gulp.
"Scoob!" he whined. "Oh well, I'll make an even better one this time. Now where's some more bread...?" A thick pine branch tapped him on the shoulder and handed him a fresh loaf. "Ah, thanks." He cut a slice before his eyes suddenly bulged and he looked again. The nine-foot tall tree, with red glowing eyes glowered at him, its lower branches spreading like a giant maw as it roared.
"Zoinks!" Shaggy and Scooby yelled before running away. The monster grabbed the knife and gave chase. The frightened pair came to a metal door, which they yanked opened and went through. Only then did they realize it was a walk-in refrigerator. The monster's branches snapped against the doorframe as followed them inside, roaring.
BLAM! BLAM!
Fred and Daphne snapped to attention. Velma ran down the stairs shouting, "What happened!"
The couple rushed out to meet her. "I don't know!" Fred gasped.
"I think it came from the kitchen," Daphne said, so the three rushed there. A trail of kitchenware and pine needles led to the walk-in. They carefully entered the eerily quiet room. Daphne suddenly squealed and buried her head in Freddie's chest.
The tree monster lay in a pool of blood. Scooby was lying on the floor, whimpering with his paws over his eyes.
Shaggy stood perfectly still, shaky hands still aiming his Colt snub-nose at the evil tree. "It had a knife, and it was, like, coming right at us, man...!" he rambled.
Velma carefully stepped around the tree, kicking the knife away before reaching him and taking the gun. "It's all over now. You did the right thing," she soothed him.
Fred gently pulled away from Daphne and started fishing through the branches. The others leaned in to see him uncover the culprit's face. "Snydington?" they said in unison.
His eyes half opened and he gasped, "I only wanted to scare you... I was going to buy this place in foreclosure. And I would have gotten away with it too, if ..."
Then he coughed up blood and died. The gang just stared for a minute.
"Shouldn't we call the police or something?" Daphne fretted.
"No!" Velma snapped. She paused, caressing the pistol. "What happened here never leaves this room, got it?"Hours later Mr. Tannenbaum returned to find the gang sitting by the roaring fire, drinking eggnog, cocoa, and no small amount of booze. "Hey, like, come join us!" Shaggy slurred with a dumb smile. The old man didn't hesitate and poured himself a stiff one.
Daphne quietly said, "We found out who the monster really was. Snydington."
Never taking her eyes off of the roaring fire, Velma added, "... but he got away."
"Hmm..." Mr. Tannenbaum didn't seem surprised. A few minutes passed quietly then he cleared his throat. "You built a good fire, but it smells like some rotten pine got in there."
"Oh, yeah," Freddie mumbled, "Definitely not the best Yule log."While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
