Summary: Past life mistakes will forever haunt him. Lost childhood love keeps him awake at night. His dreams are filled with nightmare visions on fiery wings. Language, MM, OC, Violence
Prologue
Giant plumes of black smoke billow all around his kneeling form as poisonous gasses hiss high into the hot air from out of molten cracks in the growling earth. Even though the toxic fumes are slowly draining him of life, he can't look away from those merciless amber eyes he still thinks more beautiful than honey in the sunshine.
/Sozin…please…/
A crazed hunger for absolute power and venomous greed glare out at him from within a face he had once caressed with the deepest of love, once upon a long, long time ago.
/Sozin…don't leave me…/
The island under him is shaking, cracking open and tearing itself apart, just like the heart in his chest was.
"Help me," he asks just once more, holding out his trembling hand with a flickering hope that it will still be taken hold of.
That smile.
No dense cloud of acrid smoke could hide it.
His hand falls to the scorched earth.
Roku can feel the boiling tears begin to sting his eyes as his beloved turns away from him. Like screaming stars falling to earth, so do his tears.
He squeezes his eyes shut and swallows the broken cry that nearly escapes his burning throat as a dragon roars over the destruction he can't stop. He would make no sound as the world burns down all around him.
He feels a familiar touch and he tightly hugs Fang's scaled muzzle. He does not feel the volcanic blood as it overtakes them both in its deathly embrace. The Avatar's heart hadn't allowed it.
A small world away, high atop the tallest mountain, a newborn baby's first cry fills the temple like sweet incense.

Note: I just finished watching all three seasons of Avatar and absolutely loved it. I can't believe this show was actually made for Nickelodeon. It was so creepy, deep and beautiful. I wish the creators had made more, but I'm glad they did actually finish it. So many shows today don't get to be finished.
This fiction is going to go through the life of Aang as he grows up at the Southern Air Temple. He makes friends, falls in love, finds out about his terrible destiny and runs away from it all in the end. This is going to be Aang/OC and Aang/Zuko. This is going to be an extremely long story and a tragic one. If you like angst, this is going to be a story for you. Also, if you really enjoy sad stories with scary/crazed characters, checkout my Deathly Scream story.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, dear readers. Please review and tell me what you think about the prologue. If any of you would like to make some constructive suggestions about what you would like to see in the story, maybe I can take them into consideration in future chapters. It will be a lot of fun.
It is snowing a lot here, so I'm going to go play. I want to sled down the hill just behind the apartment. If you hear me scream, watch out for falling rocks. They come out of nowhere.
