Opposites Attract
Part 1
Katara shivered a little as she stepped out into the night air. It was late and as far as she could tell everyone else was asleep. Toph was curled up in her earthen tent, while Aang was snuggled into Appa’s warm fur. Sokka, of course was snoring away in his sleeping bag with Momo curled into a tight ball on top. As for Zuko, the newest member to their small group, she had no idea where he was.
Having fought against the fire-bender so many times, she could understand why the young prince didn’t feel comfortable with their group yet. It took a lot for them to accept him, and that trust was still a very fragile thing. But Aang needed to learn fire-bending from someone, and Zuko was the only one they could find that would help teach the avatar. But even knowing that, it still wasn’t easy.
Especially for Katara. She had fought the fire-bender herself, and still she was reluctant to trust, even though something inside of her yearned to trust the suffering youth. Honestly if she were to be truthful with herself, she might actually admit that she found Zuko to be quite handsome. She might even admit that she was starting to develop feelings toward her old enemy.
And who could blame her? Zuko is the first male she’s traveled with that she didn’t consider as family. She knew Aang had developed a crush on her, and she had even started to fall for the young air-bender, but somehow, other things managed to keep the two friends from becoming more. Then Toph joined them and Katara began to notice a difference in Aang as the blind earth-bender worked with the avatar. She suspected that Aang was beginning to fall in love – true love with Toph.
Katara couldn’t help but smile. ‘Like they say, opposites attract,’ thought Katara as she slowly made her way down to the river. She always liked to be close to the water, somehow it made feel calm and closer to home. And tonight was no different, it would give her time to herself, away from the others.
With her mind focused on the blind earth-bender and the last air-bender, Katara continued on her way towards the river.
######
Zuko sighed as he calmly floated in the cool river. He had been unable to sleep, and had thus sought to tire himself out by working on his fire-bending. After nearly four hours of repeated drills, taught and ingrained into him by his uncle, Zuko had finally managed to do just that. Now all he wanted to do was to bathe, cool down and a chance to relieve himself from his slight problem. Not that anyone else had noticed, thankfully.
This was becoming almost a nightly ritual for him and it was beginning to get frustrating. Whenever he would start to fall asleep, his dreams, which had at one time been filled with nightmares and despair, were now filled with images of a dark-skinned water maid. Who would have ever of thought that Zuko, the banished prince of the fire nation, would end up having feeling for Katara, an old enemy and a water-bender. ‘Talk about ironic,’ thought the fire prince.
Suddenly a sound on the path coming from the camp caught Zuko’s ear. Gritting his teeth at the disturbance to his solitude, Zuko back flipped beneath the surface of the water. The last thing he needed or wanted at this time was company.
He didn’t care. He wasn’t about to let anyone spoil his evening. Whoever it was, he would just ignore them and enjoy his swim as if there were no one else around.
#####
Katara froze when she heard the splash. Fearing that it might be thieves, or worse an attack from the fire nation, the water-bender quickly and quietly ducked behind the cat-tails and into the shadows that lined the river. Pushing aside some of the tall reeds so that she might see, Katara scanned the river for any possible invaders or unwelcome guests.
But all she saw was an ever widening ripple over the water’s relatively smooth surface. Thinking that the splash may have been caused by nothing more than a fish, Katara began to relax and started to move back out of the shadows, when the surface of the water suddenly broke.
Stifling a gasp, Katara ducked back down. Like some fabled spirit rising from the depths of the sea in an old tale, a single being rose from the river’s gentle flow. Reaching out her hands, she prepared herself for any attack that might. But nothing happened.
The figure in the river didn’t even seem to know she was there. It, no – he, for it looked like a man, but Katara couldn’t be sure due to the shadows thanks to the clouds that were currently covering the moon. He just continued to swim through the gentle river as if there were no one else around.
Katara couldn’t help but relax as she watched the being in the river. It, no, he just looked so mystical. Then the moon came out from behind the clouds and the being in the river just seemed to glow, almost as if he were bathed in silver. Katara just stared in awe. Whatever, or whoever the person in the river was – he was definitely male and very likely human.
As Katara continued to watch she, the person in the river, she felt torn. Part of her wanted to go out there and join the other, but another part of her was afraid that she might scare whoever it was that was out there away.
She had nearly made up her mind to brave the waters and introduce herself, when the person in the river turned just right and she got a good look at just what and who had captivated her so completely.
It was Zuko. And he was headed for the bend in the river back just to her right. Right were the bank made a U-shape, thankfully it looked like he was headed for the right bank and not the left, where she was currently hiding.
######
Zuko knew someone was out there. He could feel there presence, but he couldn’t tell where they were or who. He had carefully scanned the shore even as he pretended to ignore whoever might be out there, but he had seen nothing that would indicate where his guest was hidden.
If it had been someone from the Avatar’s group then they surely would not have hidden. Why should they hide from him now that he was part of their group? It wasn’t a wild animal, for whatever it was would have left by now. It could be a fire-nation spy, but Zuko doubted it. Many fire-benders were impatient and most would stop at nothing to capture either himself or the avatar.
Tired of swimming, Zuko finally decided to head for the shore. If they left him alone, he’d leave them alone – for now. Though he doubted that whoever was out there hiding was a major threat to him. He didn’t feel any malicious intent coming from the presence. If anything, it was quiet and calm.
He was almost to the shore where his clothes lay, when he noticed a dark-shadow barely hidden amongst the reeds of the bank opposite from where his clothes lay. He almost started to attack the figure crouched there but a sudden flash of blue caused by the moonlight hitting something just right stopped him.
‘Katara,’ he thought, as he realized the ice blue flashed had been from the moon light reflecting off of the river and onto her grandmother’s necklace.
He didn’t know what had brought the water maid out here, but he did know that it was going to make his ‘ritual’ a whole lot more interesting. As he settled himself upon the bank facing her hidden form, Zuko lay back in the shallow water and closed his eyes.
What he was about to do would be considered by many to be rude, but he didn’t care. It would help him out in quite a few ways, so why not? It would definitely give the water bender something new to think about. Quite a few things, hopefully.
With that in mind, Zuko let himself relax completely and gave into the need that he had been fighting all night, as he allowed his hands to slowly drift down and over his own body in a teasing search for release.
######
When Zuko laid back on the river bank facing her and closed his eyes, Katara started to get worried. Perhaps Zuko had tired himself out more than even he, himself knew. But then, Zuko moved, or rather, his hands.
Curious, Katara watched as the fire prince’s hands slowly ghosted down over his body. Starting at his neck, Zuko’s hand traced down over his collarbone towards his chest. But rather than continuing in a teasing caress, three questing fingers turned to four digging nails. Deep enough to leave four faint trails, but not enough to purposefully inflict harm. The cry that left his lips, had nothing at all to do with pain.
As the scarred youth’s back arched into his own palm, Katara bit her lip in an effort to remain silent. If she thought the fire-bender was slightly handsome before, now she knew for a fact that he was. Hypnotized by the sight before her, she watched avidly in hungry anticipation of what would happen next.
#######
The rake of his nails over his flesh sent streaks of pleasure down Zuko’s spine. He loved the light touch of nails on his skin, the slight burn only heightened his pleasure. He only wished that they had been Katara’s nails and not his own. But knowing that she was there and that she was watching almost made up for it.
Panting eagerly, he let his other hand slip beneath the surface of the water at his waist. With a firm grip, Zuko let his hand move over his aroused flesh in a steady rhythm that he knew would set his blood to boiling.
The hand that was still on his chest, his nails biting further into his flesh for just a moment more, before it too found its way beneath the water. With both hand on his hot flesh, Zuko bit back a moan as he imaged that it was Katara’s sweet mouth wrapped securely around his straining cock and not his own hands or the river.
Groaning, Zuko was unable to keep his hips from trusting into his own hands. Just being able to feel her presence and knowing she was there, made it harder. His control was slipping rapidly away and he didn’t even care. He could feel the burn that let him know that he was close.
Desperately he tried to hold back. To prolong this sweet, agonizing torture for as long as he could, cause only the spirits’ knew when he would ever have another chance like this. A chance to let Katara know how he felt, without actually having to face her just yet.
As the burn in his cock increased, Zuko’s eyes snapped open. Completely of there own accord, they shoot across the bank to the reeds that were on the other side, and to the girl who was hidden there. He stared straight at her, even as the burn began to move up through his cock.
“K . . Ka . . . K-Katara!”
######
When Zuko’s hands began to move beneath the water, Katara had stared in rampant fascination. The sight of his body straining body as it moved against his hand and covered in sweat was the most erotic thing she had ever seen. Her own body had even begun to react to the sight and sounds of the prince before her.
Her breasts felt heavy and swollen, her nipples tight and sensitive against the bindings that held them. Her body was warm all over. And between her thighs she could tell there was a dampness that was slowly spreading. Licking the light sheen of sweat from her lips, Katara watched spellbound.
What wouldn’t she give to lick that straining pale body? To nip and taste? What would it feel like to run her hands through his hair freely and without a care? To tease her hands over his chest and down his body? To hear his groan of pleasure as his body arched against her as her nails lightly scratched over his tight muscles? To feel his lips upon hers as kissed? Would his own touch be as hot as fire? Would it brand her? Burning her alive just from the simple pleasure of his touch?
She was tempted to reach and find out. To see if it hot as it looked. But she couldn’t. There was no way that Zuko would welcome either her or her touch. Not after how she had treated him after he first came to them.
Plus she doubted that she was pretty enough. Her skin was likely too dark for Zuko’s taste. Plus she was a water-bender and, until recently, an enemy. Now she was a tolerated necessity or acquaintance. Hell, she wasn’t even a princess. What would - or better yet, what could Zuko ever see worthwhile in her?
Not that any of that mattered, seeing as Zuko didn’t even know she was here. So why mourn for what she knew would never be? Cause right now, it was just her and the unwary fire-bender, and nothing was going to draw her attention away from the stunning display that was before her. She would watch it through to the end, and she would remember everything.
Suddenly Zuko looked up and his eyes stared starred straight at her. He was panting heavily and his eyes glazed. They glowed, as brilliant as a golden flame and just as hypnotizing, but they never strayed from hers for even a second. And it was then, with dreaded certainty that she knew that Zuko had known that she was there the whole time.
Ashamed and embarrassed at having been caught spying, Katara started to try and slip away as quietly as possible. Cause she didn’t want to face Zuko, not for having so blatantly invaded his privacy. But even as she slowly began backing away, her eyes never once leaving those golden orbs that stared back at her, a single cry froze her movements.
“K . . Ka . . . K-Katara!”
Katara couldn’t stop that gasp that left her mouth. Those blazing golden orbs that had kept her spellbound, closed as his body arched. She starred as the fire-bender grit his teeth and tried to resist the pleasure that she knew had to be flooding his body. His body trembled from the sheer force of his release, before finally falling limply back to the ground in completion.
She could still see the tremors the racked Zuko’s body as the aftershock continued to flow through his system. She also knew that his muscles would probably stiffen up if he was left lying in the cool river, but she just couldn’t bring herself to do anything except to run back to her tent. She was so shocked to hear her name falling from the prince’s lips that she was afraid that she might not have heard him properly. That it was her own mind playing a trick on her.
Surely that was it! Her mind was playing tricks! She had desperately wanted Zuko to be fantasizing about her and her mind had made it seem like he had. Cause Zuko surely wouldn’t be dreaming about her! Would . . he?
But something in the back of her mind said that she hadn’t misheard nor was she dreaming. Dared she actually hope?
How could she know if it had been real or not?
#######
When Zuko opened his eyes again, he knew that Katara was gone. Slowly he sat up and carefully climbed to his feet. Shakily he made his way up the bank towards his clothes. As he began to dry off using the towel he had warmed with a small touch of his fire-bending skill, he could not help but smile as he starred at the path that led back to camp.
He had no intention of following her, cause he knew that his little ‘performance’ had been a hell of a surprise for her. She would no doubt need time to think about what she had just seen. He just hoped that he had given her enough to ‘think’ about.
With that thought in mind, Zuko finished dressing before he too made his way back to camp, a smile gracing his lips as he imagined the trouble that little water-bender would be having once she drifted off to sleep. At least, now, he wasn’t going to be the only one with sleeping problems.

This is my first Avatar Story – I have been unable to find very many stories that I felt matched the characters’ personalities. But two stories I did find sparked an idea for a story of my own that I hope will fit the characters’ personalities. I wish to claim right now that I am in no way trying to copy either of the two stories that sparked my own – though it may seem like I am. I just found that the idea behind both inspiring stories made an excellent foundation and starting point for my own.
So I wish to apologize now if I seem like a copy cat – but by the end, my story will hopeful prove on it’s own that it is an original. Thank you for reading it and I hope you enjoyed. I welcome any and all reviews!!!!!!
