Prologue
It was bright and quiet. The smell of antiseptic filled the air, it was very familiar. Memories of pain, trouble breathing, someone crying drifted through Aerrow’s head. He was filled with a somewhat unsettling calm; he knew something was wrong, but he couldn’t remember quite what it was. Slowly the sounds around him became more clear. The sound of soft-soled shoes against a tiled floor, the pages of a book being turned. It gave him the impression of waiting.
He slowly was becoming aware of his body again, even though it felt numb and heavy. There was a deep, persistent itching from one of his legs, and a low throb in behind his eyes. A comfortable warmth pressed against his side.
His eyes, he realized, were still closed. He pried open his sleep-crusted eyelids, sure for a moment that he was blind. There was nothing but white. The world came into focus after a moment, he could make out the lines of the white tiles on the ceiling. He opened his mouth to speak, but could only manage a weak moan.
“Aerrow?” a soft, urgent voice came from his side. He turned his head and saw familiar auburn eyes.
“Piper,” he rasped, smiling. He felt the warmth at his side shift as Radarr climbed into his line of sight. There was deep concern in his expressive gaze. Piper was sitting at his bedside, a discarded book on her lap.
“Oh Aerrow, you’re awake,” she whispered, her eyes misting with tears. “Do you remember where you are?”
He closed his eyes for a moment, then shook his head slightly.
“We’re in the hospital on Terra Metral,” she said, gently taking one of his limp hands.
He opened his eyes, looking troubled. “What happened?”
She paused for a moment, looking sympathetic.
“Piper…” he urged, giving her hand a small squeeze.
“There was an attack. With Repton… and Snipe…” She said vaguely, obviously trying to get him to remember on his own. “Do you remember waking up before?”
“Here?” he asked, surprised. “No, I don’t remember anything.”
Piper frowned. “It’s been like a week and a half since the battle. You’ve woke up a few times, managed to eat a little…” she paused, looking as if she was about to burst into tears. Aerrow frowned, for the first time wondering how hurt he actually was. He didn’t feel hurt.
“How bad is it?” he asked, trying to make it sound like a joke, but the worry was evident in his voice.
She laughed a little, but it came out more as a choked sob. “I didn’t mean to scare you! You’re going to be fine, just some cuts, head trama…” she said, reaching out and petting his hair with her free hand. He sighed and closed his eyes.
“The others?”
“They’re going to be okay. Finn broke a couple of ribs, Junko broke an arm. They’re both back on the Condor, the healing crystals really helped. Stork is going through some crazy post-traumatic stress. But that’s our Stork,” she smiled wanly. “And Starling…” she trailed off.
“Starling?” Aerrow asked, surprised.
“She saved us. I guess you were out by then. She sustained pretty heavy injuries, and some Talon had a poison-tipped dagger…”
Aerrow struggled to sit up, wide-eyed, but Radarr quickly pushed him back down.
“She’s going to be fine though!” Piper said hastily, holding up her hands. “They took her to a private clinic for some more specialized care.”
Aerrow sighed in relief, settling back into the stiff mattress.
“Tell me the whole story,” he whispered. His throat was painfully dry.
Piper wiped away a few tears and sniffled. “The doctors say you have to try to remember on your own,” she said, looking away guiltily.
“Alright. As long as everyone’s okay,” he said.
“I should go get a nurse, I’ll be right back,” she said, fondly petting his hair again before leaving the room.
Aerrow took a moment to look around the drab white room. It was completely unremarkable. He looked down at the IV drip attached to his arm, and grinned slightly. He turned to Radarr.
“They have me on some pretty good drugs, don’t they? I can’t feel a thing.”
Radarr frowned and nodded. Aerrow closed his eyes again.
“I get the impression I’m gonna be stuck here for awhile.”

Other chapters are much, much longer. Main pairing is Dark Ace/Aerrow, even though it might seem like it's going to be Aerrow/Piper. Critics are welcome!
