I wrote this one a while back for a friend, and decided, "Hey, I might as well publish it up at FanFiction," So here I am. The second chapter, in which I originally made more of a plot movement, was rubbish - so I have altered the end of the first chapter, and will be rewriting the rest of the story. Sorry about some of the stereotypical love confession junk. . . And the huge MacGuffin, which I hate to use. - As a side note, I felt like a bitch writing something out to be a 'paltry vista for that degree of taxonomy'. I only hope you enjoy it.
12/16/08 - Chapter Two Added
The pink afternoon light hung in the air wispily beneath the picturesque hilltop, leaving the atmosphere of the moment cool and dry on that mid-winter afternoon. There was something so terminal about the season we all knew, by the pure nature of it being the end of the seasonal cycle, but the course of events leading up to the time of year upheld the real spirit of the times- of restoration and renewal. The Amity Park skyline was painted in a palette of dreary grays and browns, muted dark pastel purples and reds, a real Bob Ross left over from autumn, though the trees and bushes were notably less happy, despite even the fortune they had been dealt so recently. Beyond the pristine limestone town hall and the stretch of houses surrounding the crowded town square, the hills faded into a dead patchwork of light and dark grays, spruced with the occasional run down oil rig or water-tower structure from days long gone. Past the hills, was more of that, extended out into an endless ocean-view of the plains, all surrounding the meager oasis of Amity Park. The tree – the tree they sat under was still in bloom; a tall bunch of crape myrtle, intertwined and woven into a single entity of pink and purple foliage. Having lost the bulk of its leaves, and preserving only the tissue-paper thin flower buds, it was as if it, along with the rest of the lackluster Amity landscaping, was somehow the last dying breath of the seasonal cycle, a last place to look to in dire times from the least-expected of places. None of it was as dramatic as one could play it out to be, but the public zeitgeist seemed to warrant such an attitude.
Sam shifted her weight onto Danny’s shoulder as they looked out over the town and all of its citizens gathered in the local square. After what she had been through, she made the decision for a change in wardrobe; she wore a small, thick-knit amethyst tank-top bearing a cartoon skull emblem just above the chest that left her midriff typically exposed. Her lower-half was the same to the naked eye, stockings and all, besides the purple crosshatching on her skirt. However, now she wore a pair of lavender, cloth open-gloves that stretched from the back of her hand nearly to her shoulder. As had Danny, to a slightly less extreme extent, Sam let her hair grow longer, and it now reached down past her waist, thinning near the top as a result, though still retaining some of its contour, and flaring out to a distinct curved end that pointed back nearly-upwards. Notwithstanding all this, the green hair tie still graced the crown of her head.
Brushing her hands off from the blades of dried grey grass stuck to them, and rolling back down her glove, Sam snaked her left hand up Danny’s back, grabbing his shoulder and letting her arm dangle behind him while wrapping her right hand around his chest and gently holding his left side. She smiled, resting her cheek on his shoulder and looking out at the horizon. “I can’t believe you didn’t want to attend your own ceremony,” Sam remarked playfully with an acute sigh, turning her glowing, lavender eyes towards Danny, who wrapped his arm around her waist in turn, pulling her closer.
“Well,” He played back, “You know, sometimes I like to stay off to the sidelines and just watch life play out.” They both knew this was patently untrue. Danny was always the kind to intervene where he didn’t really belong, with the best intentions, no doubt, but to his misfortune, often the worst outcomes.
“And your folks are cool with knowing your secret identity?” Sam said coolly, a little bit more seriously this time. She was somewhat out of the loop on everything that was going on. Since he had organized the coalition to temporarily make the entire world intangible a couple of months ago, Danny had been world hero number one, at last, atoning for his sub-par history in the public eye. The hero charade finally settled down a little when Danny started slipping away from celebrations invisible and unnoticed. Before the experience, Danny had imagined that the public hero position would be sublime, but he promptly learned otherwise.
“Yeah, the time for secrets is over. The world is safe. It’s time for new beginnings. My dad even wants me to team up with him now,” Danny and Sam both chuckled at the last remark.
“So you’re a big star now,” Sam hugged Danny a little tighter, “The biggest in the world, probably,” her voice dipped into a more solemn timbre.
“Yeah, it’s weird, huh?” A pregnant pause came between them.
“You’re probably going to get pretty busy…”
“What else is new, eh?” Danny’s voice was a little irritated, though not with Sam. He had really shrugged the idea of being a big shot, go-to champion early in his era of celebration.
“And,” Sam averted her eyes a bit, in sorrow perhaps, shame, “I probably won’t get to see too much of you anymore…” The tone of her voice revealed a stifled hurt beneath the flesh. Danny pulled her closer by the waist, drawing their hips nearly together, if it hadn’t been for the angle at which Sam sat. The tension between them was at the crest it had been destined to come to some time during their rendezvous. This was the first time they had met since Danny had saved the world; since they had shared, only in part, their feelings.
“I wouldn’t count on that,” he smiled down at her, pulling something out of his pocket in a closed, loose fist. “Sam, I never could have done any of this without you.” He opened his hand, revealing the ring she had given back to him back at the South Pole. He plucked it from his palm and grabbed her hand, slipping it over her right ring-finger. Sam tried to hide it, wanting to demonstrate her emotional strength, but the conspicuous glisten in her eyes was that from her joyous tears she bore, and hiding it was out of the question. “And I don’t care what’s coming next. I only hope that you’re there to share it with me.”
“I hope to be…” Sam’s voice trailed off into the gust of rustling wind through the trees, accompanied with a satisfied sigh to finish her statement. The sun had nearly dipped all the way below the horizon, leaving the tops of the billowing clouds above an eerie dark blue, but with a hopeful glowing, pink underbelly.
A more relaxed yet tense-in-aspect look came about Danny. Gently, but diligently Danny slipped one of his hands beneath Sam, the other holding her back up, and lifted her onto his legs so that she sat looking at him, her legs saddled off to his right. He briefly cleared his throat off behind him. “Sam…” He said, a more mature sound in his voice, though not an artificial one. She kindly smiled at him in a responsive, ‘I’m ready to listen’ conduct.
“What is it?” She said in an understanding manner.
Danny had finally brought the strength within himself to say what he meant. “When we were down at the South Pole,” He brought up, feeling more confident as we went, “I never really had time to say much to you. Everything was so caught up in the moment, moving so fast.” Sam’s face turned paler with worry, leaving her brow furrowed and her mouth contorted in an odd dismayed, uncertain umbrella-curve. She would have been sobbing had it not been for the peculiar manner in which he presented his ideas.
“Look, Danny, if I was being inappropriate while you were in a bad situation, I understand, but then I don’t get why you would le-“Sam tried to get out in a poorly-paced haste.
Danny put his hand delicately over her mouth, not enough to forcibly quiet her, but enough for her to get the point. “Sam,” He let out, frankly, “Take it easy.” A calmer, yet persistently sensitive look occupied her outward expression. “I’m so glad that we kissed – that we could share something like that, beyond the journey of our friendship that we’ve had.” Sam’s face lightened up, but she maintained her awaiting look, one of her eyebrows subtly cocked, the whole world hanging in unqualified contingency. “But I just took off too quickly. I’d had feelings for you since elementary school, Sam. It was then that I could finally have told you, I really do love you.” Sam’s building-up tears streamed down her face, though sparing her makeup. She swung her legs over to straddle his, and dove into a sensual embrace with Danny, closing her eyes and cradling her head over one of his shoulders.
“Oh, Danny,” She exclaimed to the cliché. “I couldn’t have said it any better.” Danny smirked at that. “I love you, too.” Sam lifted her head up, a satisfied look in her eyes and a wide, closed grin about her face. Danny smiled down at her with a sigh of relief, revealing his own uncertainty about the admission, and pulled her close into a kiss. She wrapped her hands around his back and pulled herself nearer to him, the crook of her legs and her torso steadfast against his own. The kiss sustained for a good minute, minor other activity going on between them, only the shared love of their mouths. “Let’s see where the future takes us.” He smiled and looked out past the horizon, Sam clutched close.
Carefully and slowly, as to not seem disconnected, Danny loosened his grasp on Sam and held her by her sides beneath her arms, which were extended out, grabbing the sides of his own, about at half arm’s-length away from him. Both of their wide grins perpetually amplified each other in the same symbiotic way that laughing friends sometimes cannot stop as the result of each other’s provocation. “I’m so glad we can have this fortune to be together,” Danny finally announced. Sam only nodded at first, but then dropped her arms, folding her hands openly, naturally, in Danny’s lap. Danny removed his hands from Sam’s sides and set his hands behind him in the grass to prop the both of them up.
He had changed in the recent time similarly to Samantha, to the point that they were able to remark on the contrasts and changes each other had made upon meeting. Feeling the old t-shirt didn’t really fit his new style, nor his maturing muscular structure and height, he wore a dark-grey turtleneck, which he often kept the sleeves rolled up on, even in the current cold weather. He had shed the old overly-baggy jeans which he no longer needed to hide his physique for a pair of thin cut, black Khakis. They weren’t the best active-wear, but he had his alternate form for that. To top it all off, Danny’s hair had lost its well-kept figure with all of his time on the road, and now stretched down to just below the base of his neck where it naturally frilled out and curled up. Sam had always been a fan of men with long hair, and had been quite used to the extremes of the style with all her time spent at a plethora of activist rallies and demonstrations
Gently, Danny inched Sam and himself backwards to the point that his back was rested comfortably against the tree beneath which they sat. To Danny’s surprise, the grass that grew at the base of the tree was just as thick as it was further out, allowing for easy movement about. Having been jostled about some from the relocation, Sam cutely decided to crawl back up on Danny and flip herself over, sitting in his lap as if he were a long recliner, sized just for her. She delicately set her head off to the left as not to collide with Danny’s, and she clasped her hands in her lap, prompting Danny to reach around their front and hug her around the waist, beneath her arms. “Ahhhhh,” they both sighed in tandem. “Some moments… I wish could just last forever,” Sam made mutual the knowledge.
“Sure, the moment seems like the greatest thing in the world right now,” announced Danny, trying to say something profound, “But what we have between us is something special. To let the beginning of this relationship, the newfound heat, last forever would only rob us of the brilliant flower this is bound to blossom into.” Danny smiled, knowing what he said was just goofy for the type of relaxed relationship he had always had with Samantha. She smiled anyway.
“You know what?” She rhetorically put forth, “I get the feeling that, subconsciously, I realized such a grave implication of my time-manipulative wishes, but dismissed it, cause, well, I don’t know, maybe because it was just me being lame in the first place.”
“That sounds like you,” Danny laughed. Sam didn’t appreciate the idea of being lame, but knew that he was only joking with her, and joined into the snickers.
“You know,” Sam timidly let out, “Despite my real knowledge that it’s what’s on the inside that counts, somehow, I think the prospect of being a social outcast has always fazed me to a notable degree. You know, you look at all of the stars, the popular kids, and as a youngster you envy them, but before a while, you pity them. You know what I’m saying?”
Danny nodded, hesitantly at first, but then more confidently after a few moments with a look of acknowledgment on his face. “It’s like you see them as these big shots that everybody knows and loves, for the same reason as yourself, I guess, and you see how incompetent they are. And it’s then that I think, you know, ‘how could somebody like that be so important?’, and you realize that everybody else is just a foolish as they are.” Danny shook his head in discontent for his society.
“That’s some nice introspection you’ve got going there, Danny. You get that all from psych 1, or were you able to wing it a little?”
Danny laughed from the middle of his throat in a sort-of scoffing, sarcastic ‘hey, that was mean’ manner. Sam enacted her cruel retribution for the goad of her social status into discussion. “I guess I’m beyond the point where I have to be concerned with being an insignificant speck. Now I’m the girlfriend of a big hero.”
Danny grinned, silently. “Hey, I told you, the star life isn’t for me. You’re just going to have to live as another insignificant speck. Maybe we can clump together into a speck that almost catches the radar.” His word choice was peculiar, but Sam got the sentiment. Moving off of what he’d just said, Danny moved one of his warm, battle-scarred, yet soft hands further across Sam’s bare midriff, sliding the other slowly across the waist of Sam’s skirt, down and to where its hem met her stockings, and resting bridged across the two articles of clothing. As he moved around on her, the texture of her clothing excited him, the new, unfamiliar territory that he had patiently and quietly coveted longer, even, than he would be willing to admit to himself. Sam giggled a little at this. She sometimes perpetuated the notion to herself that Danny was still just a goofy kid. She couldn’t deny anymore, in the wake of his decisions he had made recently or his changing physique, Danny was really maturing.
Carefully, Sam inched herself down Danny’s legs and flipped herself back over so that she was straddling him again, then crawling back up to make her torso back flush with Danny. The look in her eyes as she stared down at him was that of a girl foreign to the territory mixing emotions of play, lust, and a sincere effort to be cute for the one she cared about. Trying to arouse Danny, Sam openly laid her hands across his chest, kneading at it a bit, like an excited cat. “Some day, we-“
“Look out!” Danny exclaimed, grabbing Sam by her hip and the back of her head and carrying the both of them to the ground - and just in time; a glowing purple mass whizzed by their heads, statically hissing and crackling as it went, finally colliding with the tree formerly behind them and leaving a sizable sizzling, smoldering scorch mark. “I would have thought that after-“Danny began to say to his attacker, only to be caught off-guard by his manifestation. The ghoul appeared as a relatively amorphous being, though bearing a strange resemblance. He had no discernable contours on him, appearing prismatic almost, and sporting no color but the eerie plumes of dark-purple flame crowning his leeward side. “Who- who are you? I’ve never seen you before? What business do you have here trying to hurt Sam and me?”
The darkness cackled vehemently. All around them, it was as if the calm before the storm was here, and black clouds were rolling in on queue along the horizon. Sam turned her head in Danny’s palm, clearly exhibiting the same amount of shock at the figure’s physique. “Still so naïve, I see,” its echoing voice bellowed. Sniggering again, the thing hurled another ectoplasmic glob towards Danny, who pulled Sam closer and rolled them a turn down the hill, barely dodging it. Tenderly, Danny brought Sam to her feet by the waist, holding her close in a greatly defensive fashion.
“It wasn’t too long ago I saved your world just as well as mine, you know. Awfully spiteful of you to come around and try to harm me at a time like this, wouldn’t you say?” Danny was so irritated he hadn’t even changed his form.
“You don’t realize how in-the-know I am with your silly little matters. Here, if you’re so ready to run your mouth about all your little immature nonsense, I suppose we might try to talk this out, savvy?” The shadow set himself down on the opposite side of the hill and began walking down it. “Here, come along, and… you might want to leave the girl.” Danny hung arduously to Samantha.
“I’m no fool. She’s coming with me.”
The darkness sighed knowingly. “Leave the girl,” he demanded. Danny turned his attention to Sam.
“Listen, we can run right now. I’m not going to leave you here.”
Sam shook her head. “Danny, I’ll be alright. Just leave the thermos here and I’ll be very careful. I’m more concerned for your safety. If he tries to hurt you, I’m sure you can fight back. Just… be careful.”
Danny thought it over. “Alright,” he conceded, “Watch your back.” Danny trotted off back down the hill behind him into the underbrush.
The glowing figure was not difficult to find just a slight ways away. Danny crept up to him, fists clenched, teeth gritted loosely behind closed lips. “So? What do you want, asshole?” Danny needed every muscle in his body to restrain himself from unleashing on the thing. It had one saving grace: its daunting doppelganger quality. “I’m not going to play games.” The darkness laughed at this, its flames engorging and glowing brighter with every motion it made.
“-And I’m not here to hurt you.”
“Your infernal introduction seemed to say differently.”
“Don’t be childish. I have something important so say.”
“Go ahead then. Say what you want and get on your way.”
The shadow paused, a bit irritated by what Danny had said. He continued nevertheless. “I am in more trouble than I had ever foreseen. No matter what you do, it is imperative nothing serious happens between you and the girl.”
Danny was terribly distraught at this last essential demand. ‘And when things are just beginning between us? Not a chance’ he thought. “You want me to avoid her in order to help you? What would you even know about Sam and me? This is ridiculous, and this conversation is over,” Danny began to jog back off away.
“You don’t want to do this.”
Danny stopped for a moment. “Oh, don’t I? I think I’m being fairly clear in my intentions.”
“Surely you’d accept some kind advice. I’m not even attempting to fight you.”
“That’s your mistake.” Danny turned around, not in ghost form, but with his hands glowing a warped green shade. Letting out a grunt, he hurled his hands outward at the shadow, releasing an immense beam of engulfing light around his adversary.
“N-n” The darkness tried to stutter out, but the light pierced through his form near the area he should have had a chest. The torn, punctured area it left fizzled with the same purple glow that slowly dimmed on the creature’s back. As it collapsed to the ground, and just before it faded into oblivion, the entire creature erupted into a vast ray of violet radiance. Danny felt sick. He brushed his hands together and the green wisps evaporated away. Getting his mind back in place, he rushed back out of the bushes and up to the hill. Sam was nowhere to be seen.
“Sam? Sam!” Danny called out of desperation.
Sam emerged from the brush where Danny had just been. “Danny!” She called back to him. She crested the hill and locked into an embrace with her companion. “That was great…” She sighed.
Danny didn’t quite understand. “W-was it?”
“I… I suppose so. I don’t know,” Sam seemed a bit out of place.
“It’s okay, let’s get out of here.”
“I don’t know, look at the town…”
The sun had dipped behind the horizon, and light remaining was the stale watery washed beams of the moon cast lilac through the trees. The crowd had dispersed from the town square, and the ginger streetlights shed a lackluster mélange of mismatched spots all about the area. This perhaps was a sight worth admiration. A poet would have ventured to label it transcendent, but it was really a paltry vista for that degree of taxonomy.
“It’s… romantic, wouldn’t you say,” Sam hinted, easing Danny back down to the ground where they had been sitting before they were so rudely interrupted.
“Any setting is romantic in your presence, Sam.” Danny’s ability to be genuinely adult shone through to Samantha’s delight. She edged up back into a straddle over Danny once more. Sensually, Sam traced her fingers up along Danny’s legs, to his chest and then up onto his shoulders, leaning forward into a loving kiss. Though Sam initiated it, Danny, too, bowed into the kiss, powerfully embracing Sam, and more enthusiastically sucking at her, almost professionally. Whilst they kissed on, their eyes were locked to one another, sharing a great mutual feeling of progress and acceptance. Cautiously, and tactfully, Danny implied a request for his tongue to enter into her mouth. She gave way without any hesitation, letting out a brief pleasured breath from the sides of her mouth. As hers and Danny’s tongues played together in each other’s mouths, they could feel between them that this was the way things belonged.
Being careful not to seem detracted, Sam drew back from the wonderful kiss and began to ghost her fingers off of Danny’s shoulders and down the front of his torso. Making wide wave patters back and forth across his chest and easing down to the waist of his jeans; Sam took a hold of Danny’s belt buckle, and then looked back into his eyes. “I’m not coming on too-“
“I can’t tell you how long I’ve waited for this moment,” interrupted Danny. Sam smiled up at him.
“I feel the same way.”
In a modest-yet-cute technique, Sam grabbed the end of Danny’s belt and lifted it up to release the buckle, then easily snaked the belt out from around Danny’s pants. Setting the belt aside, Sam continued to knowingly build an exciting tension, rubbing her open palms about on the lower part of Danny’s torso and the tops of his thighs, just avoiding the crux of his pelvis. In the heat of all this foreplay, Danny, too, reached around Sam’s back, feeling her up and down, and occasionally dipping below the hem of her garment to feel the back of her legs. He caressed the backs of her stockings, up a few inches into her skirt, but allowing him to save the best of it for later.
He was interrupted when Sam finally decided to make a move. She reached up and unbuttoned the top of his jeans, moved her hands around on him briefly again, and grabbed the zipper, slowly sliding it down to its default position, enjoying the repetitive, clicking releases as it went.
Just as Sam gripped the waistband on Danny’s boxers, he hoisted his hand up in a puzzling way. “Sam,” He sounded off, in a mixed character. She smiled and yanked around the band a little more to his response. “Sam, I…” She looked up at this, a little confused.
“Is something wrong?”
Danny moved his arms around, pushing at Sam, but with considerable inability to actually move her. “Sam, you’ve got to get off.”
“Wh-what?”
Danny persisted. “You’ve got to get off of me, and get out of here, Sam. Get off me.”
“What’s the matter?” Sam’s brows furrowed.
“Get off, now,” Danny clutched for the breath to let these words out, as his arms fell back off of Sam and off to either of his sides. Sam pushed off of his lap and jumped to her feet.
Sam opened her mouth so speak, but before she could make more than a brief squeak, Danny’s hair flickered to its glowing white and his eyes shot open, their usual green, though it was particularly amplified, sending out a grand emerald aura all around him. Moments later, his eyes shut and his body went limp, still with ashen hair, but dimmed to the typical sheen of his normal form. Sam collapsed atop his form.
“Danny? Can you hear me, Danny?” She shook his limp corpse.
