[AN]This is my first Avatar fic. I saw the finale, but wrote this chapter before. I'm going under the assumption that all went pretty much like the finale. It's not really taken into consideration though. This is just something I've always had in the back of my head, but now decided to make it public. Hope you enjoy.[/AN]
A deep breath. Her stomach made a little noise as she exhaled deeply. She had just come from tea served by Uncle Iroh. Funny how she called him Uncle too now, out of deep respect. Funny how so much had changed. The door to the Fire Lord's palace opened, and she stepped up and through the doors. Lifting the hem of her water tribe dress as she entered, she remained ever the lady as she bowed at the throne of the Fire Lord.
"I heard you had tea with Uncle."
"Yes. Delicious as always."
Knowing that was her invitation to straighten her back, she stood and looked Zuko in the eyes. It had been about six months since they last saw each other, and little had changed about him. Perhaps a bit more muscular, if that was even possible. Yet it didn't scare her away. Zuko descended from the throne and walked down to Katara. Bowing in respect to her, he placed a hand on the small of her back without saying a word and led her into a less formal room. They were not alone, for there was always a guard with Zuko, and a servant or two. When they arrived they each took a seat on either end of a small rectangle table. Polar opposites as always.
"So, what brings you to the Fire nation, Katara?"
Glancing away from Zuko, and his ever present scar, she answered.
"I have a favor to ask, Zuko."
"Well. Name it. You know I would do anything for you."
She flinched at that last statement. Perhaps she was letting emotion get in the way of her reason for wanting to see Zuko. Or something else. As a water-bender, she learned that emotion was essential to human survival. It was the very core of water itself. Yet there were times that did not call for emotions, and this was one of them. Raising her head, and looking square at Zuko, she responded.
"It's about Aang. After the last battle we all thought he was fine. You saw him half a year ago. You would probably say that he was as chipper as a child. But something happened to him. For months now he's been withdrawn. He won't even speak to me now. I've brought both Sokka and Toph to him but he wouldn't talk to either of them. It's almost as if he's in a prolonged state of mourning over the loss of the entire Air kingdom. He truly is the last air-bender. And I think he's finally understanding that. After all the globe-trotting we've been doing over the years it's a wonder it never hit him sooner. I guess his quest has been a distraction."
The Fire Lord remained pensive for a moment. Taking in what was said. Katara really looked desperate. From what he heard and knew she and Aang were a couple. It was strange to him that they had lasted so long. He just thought their love was a teenage crush. That's what it was with Mai and him after all. They broke up on mutual terms, knowing that they would be better off with other people. He never felt he could make her happy. Looking at Katara inquisitively he wondered if she felt the same way.
"Well, that is a dilemma. I wonder though, why even bother with me, Katara? You obviously trusted your brother and the little earth-bender over me. You always have. I honestly don't see what I can do in this situation."
"Honestly Zuko. Why did my trust with you cause so much turmoil? Or distrust rather. I've matured past that. And I know you and Aang weren't always on the best terms. I figured that an enemy might know him better than his friends."
There was a fire behind Katara's eyes. A fire that Zuko picked up on. It was familiar to him, a look that resonated within every fire-bender. With all of the spark Katara had, he wondered why she wasn't a fire-bender sometimes. He could see her lashing out on him an onslaught enough to scar him again. Folding his hands on the table, he replied, a bit indignant.
"I see. I always wanted your trust more than anyone in the group. I wonder why now. I'm not sure if I can help. I know it is a long journey home for you, so you are welcome to stay at the palace until you are ready to leave. My servants will ensure you have everything and anything you need."
Zuko stood, causing every head in the room to bow to the Fire Lord, including Katara. Zuko left the room through a door in the far corner, and his servants led Katara in the opposite direction. She couldn't help but think it was a huge mistake to come to the fire nation. She should have stayed with Aang at the air temple, where they were living. Obviously Zuko could care less about the Avatar's state of mind. The next Avatar would be a water-bender. A huge benefit to the water tribes, but a blow in power to the fire nation. Well, Aang was alive, and she should at least be grateful for that.
Being led to a beautiful room she looked around and at the objects on a dresser. Some of the jewelry was quite ornate, and she knew that this was no ordinary guest room.
"Like it?"
The voice startled Katara, yet she knew it was only Zuko. He had come through a back entrance to the room of the previous Fire Lord, Ozai. Zuko did not take the chambers in case his mother was to ever return. Katara should have remembered that. Yet she was so lost in the ornate quality of the room and trappings.
"It is beautiful. But I shouldn't be here...surely I was led astray."
As she moved towards the door to leave, Zuko grasped her arm gently, keeping her in the room, and in his grasp.
“What makes you think that this room isn’t yours?”
The look exchanged between the two former rivals was ignited on both sides. Zuko seemed to be inviting her to a challenge, while Katara was always on the defensive. He let go of her arm, knowing that he had grabbed her a little too tightly. Too intimate. Katara was the first to break the stare and look down at a corner of a decorated carpet. Zuko took a few steps back from her allowing the space to buffer their tension.
“You think I would put you in a room less than you deserved. You will stay here in my mother’s quarters. The quarters for a fire queen.”
There was a hint of implication behind Zuko’s voice when he spoke but Katara dismissed it. Surely he did not mean that he wanted her to become his wife. Her imagination was running away from her and she reigned it in. Zuko was not that type of man. He was not her type of man. The men she liked were good.
Which is how she could explain all of her mistakes to herself until she found Aang. They were a byproduct of her being led astray. She never took those past relationships seriously, and neither did the other party. At least she hoped. She was destined to be with Aang. That much was certain.
