Summary: Out of darkness, he came from the sea. This story will contain boy love, language, and violence.
Prologue
The morning sky was so blue and the ocean waves mirrored it with their own shimmering radiance. There wasn’t a cloud to be seen anywhere. It looked like it was actually going to be beautiful day. But, that could easily change. A storm could easily come raging in from out of nowhere in a matter of seconds. The Dark Water was really starting to mess with the meteorological elements as well now. This terrible darkness was literally devouring their whole world. But, Ren was not going to allow these dark thoughts to ruin such a peaceful morning. He was going to enjoy every second of it while it lasted, because he might not get another one like it.
“Good morning, Ren,” Niddler said, flapping down on rainbow colored wings, enjoying himself a yummy looking Menga Melon. “Wow, this is so tasty. Do you want some?”
Ren chuckled and shook his head. “No. You enjoy it, Niddler.”
“Don’t mind if I do,” he said, tearing into the juicy pink flesh like there was no tomorrow.
“Noi jitat! You stupid, monkey-bird!” Ioz yelled, storming out on deck. “That was our last Menga Melon!”
“Oops,” Niddler said, quickly flapping away from the angry looking pirate. “But, it called out to me. It told me that it wanted to be eaten. Who am I to refuse its request?”
“Oh, be quiet!” Ioz snarled, swapping at him with his large hands. “I’ll just have to find something else to fix. Where’s that woman?”
“This woman,” an angry voice hissed from behind him. “This woman can command every vegetable and fruit on this ship to strangle you in your sleep.”
Ioz rolled his eyes, running a hand through his hair. “Did you sleep well, Tula?”
She ignored him and looked at Niddler. “Did you save those seeds for me?”
Niddler nodded his head, flapping down to deposit them in her hand. “I saved a bunch.”
“Thanks, Niddler,” she said, smiling at them. “I don’t know why I didn’t think of this before. Now, I can just grow Menga Melons all the time with these seeds.”
Ren cocked his head to the side. He had never seen Niddler look so happy in all his life. Feathers were going everywhere in his excitement.
“How did you sleep, Ren?” Tula asked, turning to look at him with her bright green eyes. They reminded him of growing green flora.
“I slept all right,” he lied, giving her a white smile.
She nodded her head, but gave him that look again. He knew she probably didn’t believe him, but he was grateful that she didn’t pursue the issue. The last thing he wanted to do was get into an argument over his dreams. They were his problem, nobody else’s.
There was always a haunting voice calling out for help. It was the sound of a person in great pain and he could never get through the storm of darkness.
“Hey,” Niddler said, pointing with a sharp talon. “Is that island supposed to be there?”
Ren turned to look with everybody else. It wasn’t a large island, but it was covered in a thick grove of flowering trees and shrubs. There was a pod of leviathans playing in the sunlight in the short distance.
“Here’s a chance to get some fresh supplies,” Ioz said, sounding happy for once. “And we can take a break in that cove.”
“And I can probably find us some fresh seafood, too,” Tula said, grinning right along with hin.
Ren nodded his head. “Niddler and I will go look for some fresh water then.”
“Aw, do I have to, Ren?” Niddler whined, flapping his wings in mild irritation. “Someone should stay with the ship.”
“Oh,” Tula said, pointing. “Look at all those Menga Melon trees.”
Niddler’s eyes nearly popped out of his head. There was a ton of them lining the shore.
“Pink sand?” Ren asked as Ioz steered the ship towards the cove. “Niddler! Fly up and see if you can see anything.”
“All right,” Niddler said, flapping off. “I shouldn’t have had that melon.”
0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000
It turned out that the island was uninhabited and was the shape of a perfect crescent moon. The waters surrounding it were calm and the color of turquoise. It was the pink sand that seemed to mystify Ren. It was all the pinks, blues, and greens. The colors bewitched his eyes. The compass was just as dead as ever, so there was no treasure here. It was just a peaceful island where they could rest and store up on their supplies. He might even go for a swim later.
The forest was quiet. In fact, it was too quiet. Where were all the animals? Shouldn’t the birds be chirping? Well, Niddler made more than enough noise with his gobbling and slurping.
“Are you sure you don’t want any, Ren?” He asked, holding out an extra half. “They’re really yummy.”
“Fine,” Ren said, taking it from him. He looked it over and scooped out some of the inside, putting it to his mouth. “Wow, this really is good.”
“I told you so,” Niddler chirped, wagging his long tail. “These are the best I’ve ever tasted.”
“Hmm,” Ren said, as they continued following what he considered to be a trail. “Are you sure that spring was this way?”
Niddler nodded his head. “I’m sure of it.”
Ren laughed. “I wonder if it got up and flowed away.”
“Don’t joke like that,” Niddler screeched, flapping his wings. “You know that’s not entirely impossible.”
That made Ren snort and he continued to eat the half Niddler had given him. He began to wonder if the spring did get up and flow away, because they were not finding it. He didn’t even hear water and they had been walking for almost an hour.
“Is it just me?” Ren asked, turning his head to look down at Niddler. “Or is this island bigger than what we thought it was?”
The monkey-bird just shook his head. “I know it’s around here somewhere. I saw it.”
Ren started to get worried. What if it had been an illusion? What if there was somebody here and they were playing with them?
“Niddler?” Ren asked, coming to a stop when he turned all the way around. “Where did the trail go?”
The monkey bird froze. There was nothing but a dense jungle behind them and there was no trail.
“Let’s not panic,” Ren told him, drawing his sword. “We’re not in any danger, yet.”
Niddler nodded his head, looking like he was about to panic at any moment. “Well, at least we won’t go hungry. Look at all the Menga Melon trees.”
That caused Ren to smile. Leave it to Niddler to find a silver lining in everything.
“Oh,” he said, pointing. “There is a tall hill. Let’s see if we can’t see the coast from there.”
“Yeah,” Niddler said, quickly following after him. “Then I can just fly us back.”
“Exactly,” Ren said, dropping the melon, racing along the tall blades of emerald grass, running through beams of golden sunlight that were streaming down through thick leaves.
“What in the world?” Niddler asked, and they both came to a sudden stop.
They were standing right in front of the pool of crystal clear water. It looked exactly the way Niddler had described it.
“Where did the hill go?” Ren asked, looking around in confusion.
Niddler shook his head. “What’s going on here? This place is annoying.”
Just then the ground began to quake just a little, making them both stumble on their feet. It stopped and they just stood there, looking at each other.
“Okay,” Ren said. “That didn’t sound good.”
Niddler nodded. “The ground shaking never means a good thing.”
Suddenly the ground began to shake even harder, causing waves to form in what was once a blissful looking pool.
“Jungo-lungo!” Ren shouted, grabbing a hold of Niddler by the tail, pulling him back when a large fount of Dark Water sprang up from the middle of the pool. He fell over backwards with Niddler right on top of him, causing the monkey-bird to screech in even more panic.
Niddler quickly flapped off him so that Ren could sit up. He blew his golden locks out of his face and his blue eyes widened.
There was a figure standing on top of the Dark Water. The liquid darkness was sliding right off that luminous white flesh.
Niddler was trembling.
“What man can stand on Dark Water and not be devoured?” Ren asked in a frightened whisper.
He ever so slowly got to his feet, looking at the young man that couldn’t be any older than him. No, this couldn’t be a man. No man could stand on pure darkness.
The young man’s flesh was like a rare pearl. It was smooth and flawless. His hair was long and the color of sea foam. It moved just like it would on top of the ocean surface.
“What is it?” Niddler asked. “Shouldn’t we be running for our lives now?”
Eyes the color of the deepest ocean snapped open with a hissing crackle. They were green one moment, blue the next, and then as silver as the moon on midnight water.
The beautiful man began to stumble like a drunk across the surface of the snapping and snarling darkness that could not touch him. It just rolled like normal water from his milky white flesh.
“Help me,” he whispered like gentle ocean waves. His long hair was flowing like sea foam, covering his obvious nudity.
He stumbled off of the pool and fell to his knees. The liquid darkness hissed and reached out like talons to pull on his snowy white hair. It couldn’t touch him.
“Back!” He yelled, holding out his hand to the screaming evil. “Do not touch me!”
The darkness had no choice but to obey, no matter how badly it wanted to eat that tasty looking meat. Ren was amazed. The Dark Water was obeying him. What was this man?
Niddler screeched when Ren took off running towards him.
“Can you stand?” Ren asked, looming over him, going down on one knee.
“Help me,” the man cried, throwing his arms around him, trembling in terror. “You have to save me! I’m in so much pain!”
“Save you from what?” Ren asked, terrified that such a creature was touching him. Why did his voice sound so familiar? “You can command the Dark Water. What do you have to be afraid of?”
The ground quaked again and even more Dark Water began to spill out to the surface.
“My dark brother,” the man said, turning his head to gaze at the face only he could see in that terrible nothingness.
“Come on,” Ren said, helping him to his feet. “We have to get out of here.”
“Ren!” Niddler yelled.
He turned to see a wave of screaming darkness rushing right for him.
“I said back!” The man screamed, suddenly glowing in Ren’s arms like a white hot star. “Do not come any closer to us!”
The darkness shrieked and coiled in on itself. “You think you can escape me?”
“Who is that?” Ren asked, feeling as if a terrible cold had suddenly bitten deep into his bones.
“Don’t look at it!” The man cried.
“Well, who do we have here?” That terrifying voice asked, snickering like deadly bubbles that could melt through flesh. “You look familiar to me, boy.”
“I am the ruler of the surface world!” The beautiful man yelled, glowing even brighter than ever. “You have no place in this world of light!”
Ren’s eyes widened. Just who in the world was standing in front of him, blocking the Dark Water’s advance?
“You’re weak, Mer,” the scary voice laughed and it was terrifying. “I’ve been growing stronger and stronger in the darkness that I rule. It will only be a matter of time before I choke and smother the life from you forever.”
Mer trembled.
“All that will be left of you is an empty shell for me to play with, brother of mine.”
“We’ll see about that!” Mer shouted, throwing the darkness back with his light. “The Thirteen Treasures of Rule will seal you once more!”
“You’re so silly,” the voice chuckled. “You were a fool to trust your magic to a mortal. They are weak, pathetic, and so easy to manipulate. It was your precious mortals that released me through their dark desires.”
“And it will be my precious mortals that will seal you right back up!” Mer screamed, fighting not to fall to his knees. “Not all of them are tainted by your wickedness!”
The darkness flowed, coiled, hissed, snarled, and screamed at him.
“Get back in the earth!” Mer cried. A beam of pure silver light shot from his hands, striking the darkness in its center, causing it to scream in outrage.
“It will only be a matter of time!” The darkness shrieked like a terrible storm. The voice was like dark thunder. “I am everywhere!”
“So am I!” Mer shouted, sending the darkness running back into the crack it had made in the pool, sealing it with his light.
The light faded from him and he would have fallen had Ren not had a hold of him. He was trembling and jerking in pain.
“Are you all right?” Ren asked, gently lowering him to the ground. “Who was that? Who are you?”
“Son of Primus,” he whispered, eyes rolling up in his head. “I…I need…”
“Hey!” Ren yelled, shaking him. “Hey!”
“Ren!” A loud voice shouted. “Answer us! Niddler!”
It was Ioz and Tula.
“Ioz!” Ren yelled. “I need your help!”
Thunder echoed in the sky. It looked like that storm was being blown in from out of nowhere.
