It had been two months since she had come to the lair, hoping to find the turtles. Instead finding their Sensei. Instead of leaving she had chose to remain. He seemed to enjoy her company and she even cleaned up and liked to cook. She would meditate with him when she could and work on her own projects while waiting for the turtles return. It was nice to her, being able to come and go as she wanted. To roller blade through the tunnels, and have the ability to do pretty much what she wanted. She did what she could to make the stay worthwhile for Splinter. She enjoyed having tea with him and learning about the culture his master enjoyed.
When she woke early one morning, about four weeks into her stay she found him doing Kata in the open space of the lair. Her curiosity had given the rat the opening he hadn’t expected. She didn’t expect she would even join him in the open space. Or slowly match his movements and breathing. It was a odd sensation, finding yourself becoming a student without asking. But as time progressed Splinter was amused and happy with her progress. She found her mind took to the training like it did with her college courses. Like a fish to water. Mona still found herself studying and working on her projects and working out in the weight room inside the lair. Always wondering what the reaction she would get when the guys came home to see her there.
A room was even to her disposal. Next to the garage port in the lair. Sound proof so she wouldn’t hear the comings and going of anyone. Even when she had met Casey it hadn’t bothered her. Though most of the time they played Halo. This life was something she wanted for a long time. Balance and the feeling that she actually belonged.
It wasn’t until late one night things changed. At first she thought someone had broken into the lair.. But what greeted her was April and the turtles. At first glance Mona didn’t even recognize them. So much taller and each of them noticeably being a different shade of green. Unlike the all pale green they had been when they had been younger.
“We’re home Sensei!” Mikey chimed out.
“Good to see you my sons, April.. I trust the trip was good?” Splinter asked.
“Good, I got the footage and the information I needed for the article,” April said. “But I think I’m done with this crazy business..”
Mikey stopped in his tracks at the mutant in the room. Mona gave a amused smirk as he did a double take.
“Holy shit! MONA!” He exclaimed.
Very suddenly she found the hyper turtle hugging onto her. Her back gave several pops and cracks.
“Hey Mikey,” Mona squeaked, “You act like ya haven‘t seen me in a century or something.”
He gave a nervous chuckle and let her go. Don smiled and pat her on the shoulder.
“Seems we aren’t the only ones who got taller,” Don said.
She gave a small smile at Don for his comment. They still were taller than her. It surprised her to see Raph was the tallest, Leo pulling in second. Mikey looked to be the shortest.
“So you guys went to Alaska?” Mona asked.
“Yeah,” Mikey said. “It was cool! Even with the huge mutated bears…”
Mona gave a strange look.
“No he isn’t making it up,” Don replied.
Mona gave a half shrug, “I’ve seen stranger….”
Mona exchanged a calm smile with Leo before her glance turned to Raph. She didn’t recognize him. He didn’t return her smile. It would be a precursor what she expected her time spent would be.
“Nice to see you haven’t forgotten us,” he said.
She could almost see the dark cloud over his head. Pressing down on his shoulders and clouding what she had thought was a cheerful turtle.
“You guys are hard to forget,” she replied.
“We just got that way with the ladies,” Mikey laughed.
She laughed and helped them bring in their gear. She and Mikey even cooked home made pizzas for a dinner. Mikey got her into singing along badly to songs on the radio, and they played ‘Guess the Song’. Don seemed to be the pro at that game, Leo following a close second. They laughed and drank, talked about time passed. She was happy she had chose to come back; This place would always be home.
It was much later in the night when she began to clean up the living room and kitchen. Splinter and the others had gone to bed. At least far as she had known. Her mind was on kata, and setting her mind into doing some after she finished cleaning. In the corner of her eye she spotted movement. She glanced over her shoulder to see Raph pull another beer out of the fridge.
“I thought you were zonked out already,” Mona said.
“I’m not a light weight like the others,” Raph said.
“I’d hate to see your liver,” Mona mumbled.
He leaned against the counter near the sink as she busied herself with the dishes.
“How far have you gotten into your training?” Raph asked.
“I’m not keeping track,” Mona replied. “It’s not my main focus.”
He moved closer to her and she actually found herself moving farther from him.
“You’re acting like you don’t know me,” He said.
She watched him a moment, “I know you.. But not know you like I should have.. I mean.. I was only around for a few weeks before I had to leave.”
“And a teenager?” He asked, eye ridge raised.
“So were you,” She said.
“Plenty of things have happened since you were here last, Mona. Where you choose to go now depends on you,” Raph said.
She rolled her neck, watching the sudsy water.
“I’m staying here,” She said. “I asked Splinter to remain here and he’s taken me on as a student. I have no intention of leaving.”
He brushed the knuckles of one hand from her shoulder and down her arm til he reached her elbow. His touch felt like someone petting a caged pet, not a person.
“I’m glad to see you, Mona,” He said.
Somewhere in the back of her mind she felt like it was lip service. She moved away from the sink and towards the rooms.
“How far do you think you’ll get into training before you wash out?” Raph asked.
That made her stop in her tracks, she partially turned to look at him.
“What did you say?” She asked.
“Your strong point has always been your brain,” Raph said. “With everything else pulling a close second.”
She exhaled, “What’s wrong Raph? Are you afraid if I become a decent ninja I wouldn’t be the same brain to you?”
This is not how she had imagined things would be with him.
“Or are you just being a jerk because I’m here?” Mona asked.
He rolled his eyes at her and walked past her. She watched him head back into his room and she head towards the dojo room. She pulled the bamboo practice sword off the rack and began going through the kata she had chosen for that night. She had difficulty focusing her mind and would find herself missing steps and beats. She spun and glided the sword from her shoulder down. It gave a snap and she felt it hit something.
“Do always keep your eyes closed?” A voice asked.
She opened one eye to see she had hit Leo with the sword. His side was facing her and half of the ‘blade’ rest against his plastron.
“Only when I can’t tune out my mind,” She said.
She pulled the sword away from him and rubbed the back of her neck. He gave a calm smile.
“Do you guys ever sleep?” She asked.
“Sometimes,” Leo replied. “I have a hour or so before I intend to sleep. I can show you another kata if you’re interested.”
She smiled at him, “Sure, if it won’t be a issue.”
She replaced the bamboo sword onto the stand and followed his lead through the kata. To her it felt more like she was doing Tai Chi then a kata. She smirked as she went through the motions. Her mind was starting to relax, turmoil thoughts easing into calm ones. The kata only lasted for a few moments and she found herself returning Leo’s bow at the end.
“You catch on pretty quickly,” Leo said.
“If something interests me well enough, I do,” She said.
He chuckled, “You should try mental focus. Kata can be done without calming your mind but it’s a wasted effort other wises.”
“Meditation?” She asked.
“Yes,” He replied.
He eased himself to sit down on the mat and she followed suite. She sat down facing him and copied his position.
“Thanks,” Mona said.
“Your welcome,” Leo said.
“I’m sure you already know about meditation but perhaps not use it enough,” Leo said.
“Not enough,” Mona replied.
“Then I say start using it,” He said, chuckling lightly.
She smirked at him and closed her eyes. Letting her breathing become steady and calm. She found herself enjoying his company. She hoped this wasn’t going to be some rare occurrence. Raph had caused her to feel uncomfortable when he was near. Leo made her feel at peace. They sat on that floor for almost two hours. She began to get up, slowly hoping she wouldn’t end up doing a face plant. But she learned even hoping not to stumble would be fruitless. One foul movement with her leg almost sent her sprawling onto the floor. She found a arm snapped to be around her waist. Back brushing a smooth warm surface. One green arm rest underneath her bust and she found color flooding her cheeks.
“I do hope you aren’t this accident prone with a weapon,” Leo said from behind her.
She eased her legs straight and fought to make the blush go away.
“I only use the bamboo right now,” she replied. “Not quite comfortable to go for anything higher yet.”
He wasn’t moving his arm. She chewed on her bottom lip. Pulse thudding in her ears. Slowly that arm dropped from around her and he cleared his throat.
“Sleep well, Mona,” He said. “I look forward for training with you.”
She turned in just enough time to notice that he too had a red flush to his cheeks. Inside her head she wanted to laugh. But on the outside no noise came out. This was proving to not be at all how she expected things to be when they came back.
