Specter Hunters
Scene One…
“THIS WAY! COME ON!!!”
It’s 12:00pm on the dot, high noon, and two men eagerly dash off from their mini-van down the sidewalk; one carrying a TV camera, filming the other one. The man carrying the camera is somewhat heavyset, with a goatee and wearing a baseball cap. The other man has a blonde mullet and is dressed sloppily, furthering his slacker appearance.
“COME ON HENRY, KEEP UP!!!”
“Dude, you try carrying this thing on your shoulder and running a 40-yard dash!”
The cameraman, Henry, does his best to keep up, running step for step behind his friend. Crossing the street, they slow down when they step on the curb and find their desired location…Casper High School. They take a moment to absorb the scenery, which is when they spot what looks to be a Teacher’s desk flying out of the 3rd story window.
“Whoa! Don, did you just see that?”
“Yeah…tell me you got that on tape!” Henry nods his head and the camera up & down. “This is DEFINITELY the place. Come on!”
Charging forward again, the duo approaches the front door just as dozens of students fly out in a horrified panic. All except for one, a typical looking redhead teen boy with freckles. He calmly walks out of the school, hands in his pocket, wearing a look of content. Henry & Don show their bravery though and press on through. Inside the building, they scramble through the hallway, searching frantically for the reason they arrived in Amity Park. As they turn the corner, they find it right in front of them.
“There! Henry, shoot that!”
Like a seasoned professional, Henry indeed films the scene in front of him…Danny Phantom in the midst of a heated battle with the Lunch Lady Ghost. She has him trapped against a row of lockers, as he tries to muscle her off. Their hands lock, and the test of strength begins.
“You know…it’s enough that I have to wait for my lunch break at 7th period,” He struggles out. “But I don’t want to spend those 50 minutes fighting YOU!”
Winning the battle, Danny pushes her back, causing her to crash into the row of lockers across from him. The Ghost-Boy isn’t given a moment to breathe though, as his foe quickly floats up from the wreckage, ready to deal out some of her own.
“You must learn…” She scolds. “You NEVER switch the cafeteria menu! NEVER!!!”
Danny stays grounded, and slowly begins to circle around the Lunch Lady Ghost, until their lined up in the direction of the hallway. Once he notices, a superior smirk grows on his face. “You know, it really was great fighting with you and all, but I’m afraid you’ll have to go…”
The Lunch Lady Ghost wears a confused look, but it quickly turns to a horrified on as she feels a strong force sucking her from the mortal realm. It comes from a woman wearing a purple baby tank top with a skull imprint on the front, a black & purple checkered skirt, and matching purple leg & arm stockings. It’s Sam Manson, and she’s holding the Fenton Thermos. As the Lunch Lady Ghost is sucked inside, she quickly slams the lid on and screws it shut, locking her in.
“You know this is your fault.” Danny says, smiling at her.
“MY fault?” Sam replies in shock. “How is this my fault?”
Danny explains as he slowly walks over to her. “You’re the one who campaigned to have a Vegetarian Menu in the Lunch Room for a whole week.”
“Hey, you should be thanking me for getting ‘Mystery Meat’ off the menu and…” She stops her vocal rant when Danny takes her in his arms, showing he was teasing. “You know, one of these days I’m gonna hit you for doing that.” She tells him playfully. The two then look into each other’s eyes and move their lips together for…
“OK! Made it!”
…an interruption from their best friend and Mayor of Amity Park, Tucker Foley. “The whole school’s clear. Now we can…and I missed the fight, didn’t I?”
Danny nods his head. “Don’t worry Tuck, when Skulker trashes the library next time, Sam will clear the school.” He jokes as they start to walk off. That is, until they hear a voice with them in the hallway.
“Dude, this is so gonna ROCK as the opening for our new season!”
Turning around, the three spot Don & Henry standing there filming him. “Wait…how did you…”
“The Press?” Tucker asks.
“They must have a real relaxed dress code for reporters now.” Sam quips.
Danny however, isn’t in the joking mood, as he charges the two. “Hey, you! Why were you filming us?”
“Chill, dude! It’s not what you think!”
“HEY! Watch the camera! I’m still making payments on it!”
“Don’t press that butt—!”
KSSSSHHHHHKK!
SCENE 2
“You wanna film me for a show?”
Turning on his camera, Henry films Danny, now in his human form, walking down the street towards FentonWorks, his home.
“Dude, dude, let me explain!” Don says, running up beside Danny. “My name is Don Stantz, and my cameraman is Henry Venkman. We’re the executive producers of the show ‘Specter Hunters’!”
“Wait a minute; I’ve seen your show.” Tucker chimes in, walking on camera. “Yeah, it comes on every Friday on the Fantasy Network, right?”
“Ah, I take it you’re one of our loyal, devoted fans?” Don asks.
“Not really.” Tucker deadpans.
Don grunts lowly in disapproval, but quickly disregards the comment. “Anyway, we’re about to start a new season of us discovering paranormal life, exposing it to the masses and informing them of their purpose!”
“Only problem is, we can’t find no good ghosts.” Henry adds.
“Shut up, Henry!” Don scolds, before getting back to the subject. “We then saw all the news reports and internet blogs about you and your ghost battles…”
“See Sam, I told you it was a good idea to make a Danny Phantom Blog.” Tucker tells her, chiming in again.
“…and when you saved the earth from that killer asteroid…that was it!” Don continues. “We were convinced. The world needs to know about Danny Phantom. The world needs to know the badassness of Danny Phantom! The world deserves to know, the Epic Win…that is Danny Phantom!”
Sam finds herself about to lose her lunch over that last comment. “They suck up more than the Fenton Thermos.” She utters under her breath.
They continue on until they reach the front door of FentonWorks. Henry quickly films the large neon sign out front, before turning his attention back to the group. As Danny searches for the keys in his pocket, the door suddenly swings open to show a surprise for him and his friends.
“Great, I had a feeling this would happen.”
Jasmine Fenton is back home. “I leave you alone for college for a few months and when I come back, you got the press with you. What did he do, blow up a building?”
“They’re not with the press, Jazz.” Danny tells her, inviting them in. “And aren’t you supposed to be at some Kegger, or whatever college kids do?”
He walks past her along with Don and Henry as she folds her arms and shakes her head. “You know nothing about college life Danny, so you…OOMMPH!!”
Her opinion is cut off as Tucker accidentally bumps into her. “Oh, sorry.” Their eyes meet, and the moment quickly turns awkward for the two.
“TUCKER!” Jazz blurts out in shock. “Uh, Hi! Didn’t…expect to see…you here…”
“Uh, yeah.” Tucker replies. “…same here!”
They both grin nervously and laugh, until the moment grows so awkward that they turn away from each other. “Uh, I should go help out Danny.” Tucker says, walking off.
“YEAH! Good…idea…” Jazz agrees, waving him off. After the moment, the camera catches Sam with a puzzled look, questioning why the two would act so strange to each other when Tucker’s known Danny’s sister for years. She quickly shakes it off though, and continues on, following Danny up to his room.
SCENE 3
“So, do I sit right here?”
Danny sits down in a chair as Henry places the camera at eye level right in front of him. They’ve set up shop in Danny’s room and are now focusing on the interview portion of the show. It was Danny & Sam’s original idea to decline starring in the show, but after some convincing from Tucker, Danny decided that he could use the potentially good press.
“Perfect, dude.” Don says, starting the interview. “Now, Danny…dude, you look a LOT different than that photo on your Blog!” Don holds up a photo of Danny to the camera, showing the Ghost-Boy’s look when he first gained his powers to his current look now.
“Oh, you mean the long hair.” Danny says, referring to his somewhat mullet. “Yeah, it was Sam’s idea. She says it makes me look older but, I’ve just been too lazy to get it cut.”
“Hey, I say keep it.” Don recommends. “Business in the front, party in the back! So how did you get your powers exactly?”
“Well, it happened back when I was 14.” Danny recalls. “My parents were working on the Ghost-Zone portal they have now…but back then their first test was a failure, and they kinda gave up on it. A little later, Sam and I went down there and I took a look inside. That’s when I found out that the portal did work…the hard way.”
“What do you mean the hard way?”
“I found out that my Dad had the power switch turned off.” Danny continues. “My hand brushed against it while I was inside, and the portal activated. I blacked out while it happened. But when I woke up…I became the hero I am today.”
“Awesome!” Don comments. “Awesome origin story! So, is there like any super arch-villain you’ve faced? You know, like a Lex Luthor, or a Green Goblin?”
“Not really.” Danny answers, a little perplexed by the question. “But there was one guy who I just couldn’t stand, and I had to fight him all the time. He was college classmates with my mom & dad, and he always tried to hit on my mom, even after she got married. His name was Vl—!”
“DANNY!!!”
The sound of his mother calling out from the basement is followed by a home-shaking explosion, possibly due to Danny’s father, Jack Fenton.
“Uh, we’re gonna have to pick this up later.” Danny tells them, before ghosting down through the floor to reach the basement. A moment later, Sam appears in Danny’s doorway.
“So, is the exploitation finished?” She asks.
“Exploitation?” Henry asks off camera. “Heh, I wish. We don’t have the money to do…”
“Shut up, Henry!” Don tells him. “Look, we’re just showing the world the awesome…”
“PLEASE don’t start that again.” Sam begs. “I just ate.”
“Well, if you want, you can say a few words about your boyfriend.” Don offers.
Thinking about it for a moment, Sam decides to take up the offer. Walking in, she sits down in the chair Danny previously occupied, and looks into the camera.
“Whoa!” Don raises a curious eyebrow as he glances at an old photo of Sam. “You seem to have upgraded in the Goth department, huh?”
“What, you mean the outfit and the hair?” Sam asks. “Yeah, I guess I did turn it up. To be honest, I was gonna stick with my old look, until my mom decided to send me to the Little Princess Business School. 4 Months I was stuck there; and I’d still be there today if Technus hadn’t attack its computer systems. Heh, he and Danny tore down half the school in their fight. So, I transferred back to Casper High…and I’ve been making my parents pay ever since. Next week, I’m getting a tattoo.”
“Wicked.” Don replies. “So how did you and Danny hook up?”
Sam crosses her legs as she recalls the moment. “Well…it started when that gigantic asteroid was heading towards earth. We…just had a moment, then. And it wasn’t one of those fake-out make-out moments we had before.”
“Fake-out make-out?” Henry asks.
“Never mind.” Sam says. “But, I’ve always been friend with Danny, ever since grade school. I even help him out when things get tough for him. Especially that one time against Vl—!”
Just then, another explosion rattles the building, even more violent than the one before. It’s powerful enough to shake the camera off the bed and send it to the floor. Henry quickly picks it up and puts it on his shoulder as Don calls the interview short.
“OK, we GOTTA find out what’s going on down there.”
SCENE 4
Descending the stairs of the FentonWorks basement/laboratory, Henry films the entire area while following Sam, Tucker and his partner Don. Advance technology litters the wall, along with plans and blueprints for future tech. The desk area is littered with notes, some even strewn on the floor around it. As they reach the bottom of the stairs, Henry films Danny and his parents, Jack & Maddie Fenton, standing next to the Fenton Portal, the gateway to the Ghost Zone.
“Aw DUDE! Tell me you’re filming this!” Don says excitedly.
“I’m filming, I’m filming.” Henry replies. “Don’t worry, I got…”
Henry’s attention is disrupted when he notices a fake skeleton hanging at the side, like the ones high schools use in science class. Upon closer observation of the though, he spots something supremely eerie…the skull of the skeleton is following his movements. He stops in his tracks, which brings the skull’s movement to a halt. But as he slowly starts walking again, the skull follows his path. Creeped out, and also intrigued, Henry steps closer to the skeleton to see if it’s a parlor trick to scare unwanted visitors. His intrigue dies though, when the skull’s vacant & black eye sockets begin to glow neon green.
“AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH…”
Stumbling back, Henry bumps into Don, and gains the attention of Danny & his parents. “THAT THINGS ALIVE!!!”
“You see, this is why I leave you in the van whenever we check out Haunted Houses.” Don replies.
“Danny, what’s the meaning of this?” Jack asks, visibly upset. “You know how I feel about members of the liberal media in the house…”
“Wait, they’re not the press, Dad.” Danny tells him. “They’re from a cable reality show.”
Don steps beside Danny and addresses his parents. “We’re here to not only inform and educate the public about ghosts, but we wanna show your son for the hero he is. Along with his loving, caring family of course.”
Maddie rolls her eyes and folds her arms, immediately noticing how the host is laying it on thick. Jack however, has bought it hook, line & sinker. “Well why didn’t you say so?”
Licking his palm, he uses it to slick his hair back before grinning at the camera. “Hello, people out there in TV land. My name is Jack Fenton, Ghost Hunter Extraordinaire. You’re probably all familiar with my gifted son and sidekick, Danny Phantom.”
Danny silently mouths the word ‘sidekick’ in offended shock as his father continues. “The Fenton’s are a loving family of Ghost Hunters, we strive to protect the world against all spectral threats, using the finest in ghost-capturing technology. That reminds me, let me show you the weapon that rips and peels ghosts painfully like a potato!”
Running off camera, Jack rushes over to his weapons vault, much to Maddie’s chagrin. “Wait, Jack! Watch out for the…”
THOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!
“…newly installed security system.” Henry does a quick pan around to Jack’s position, and shows him pinned underneath the vault door, before turning back to Maddie. “Well, I guess I should introduce myself. I’m Maddie Fenton, mother of Danny…oh, you gotta little smudge, honey…”
“MOM!” Danny protests as Maddie licks her thumb and wipes the spots off of his cheek. Don & Henry snicker under their breaths as Maddie turns back to the camera.
“I’ve been working in the paranormal science field ever since college.” She continues. “Like my husband, I’m also fascinated with spectral entities, although I rather not blow them into tiny bits.” Danny nods his head and grins in agreement. “I’d rather dissect them to see just how their anatomy and body structure differ from those of living beings.”
That causes Danny to cringe uncomfortably and turn away, just as Henry asks a question. “Hey, what’s with the jumpsuits? I mean, you’re supposed to be great ghost hunters and all, why the ridiculous outfits?”
That question brings a sneer to Maddie’s lips as she narrows her eyes. “You gotta problem with jumpsuits, pal? Because if you do, I CAN—!”
“Mom, WAIT! Calm down!”
Danny quickly steps between Henry and his mother, and as Tucker and Sam hold her back, Danny does some explaining. “Uh, not a good idea to talk about the jumpsuits, man.” He tells Henry. “My mother is a ninth-degree black belt and she knows how to hurt ghosts.”
“Yeah…I’ll take that advice.” Henry replies, visibly shaken.
A quick jump in time shows Jack & Maddie now standing beside the Fenton Ghost Portal, along with Danny, Sam & Tucker. Henry is shooting the scene while Don walks onto the camera.
“OK, we’re right here in front of what’s clearly the Fenton’s greatest invention…The Ghost Portal!”
“The ‘Fenton’ Ghost Portal!” Jack corrects him, before being elbowed by his wife.
“The portal allows any human to have a full view of the Ghost Zone, where most aberrations source from.” Maddie explains. “And in certain cases, using special Fenton Technology, one can even travel through the portal into the Ghost Zone, for whatever the need is.”
“Aw, sweet!” Don exclaims. “But what were those rattling explosions we felt earlier?”
“Oh those? We were just changing the Ecto-Filtration Unit and upgrading security features for the portal.” Maddie explains. “Some of the ghosts in the Zone were trying to force their way out, but they’ll find that’s nearly impossible now.”
“Yep!” Jack agrees, beaming with pride. “My honey and I have created the perfect security system for the portal. Amity Park…in fact, the whole world for that matter, will not need to have another worry. For out of this portal, will NEVER emerge another…ghost.”
And almost like it was on cue, the Fenton Portal doors slide open, and a near army of ghost floods the exit, quickly making their escape to the shock of everyone.
“HOLY SHIT!!!” Henry yells, falling on his back with the camera. He’s on the verge of a heart attack, but he continues to film the fleeing ghosts as Maddie frantically searches for the emergency shutdown button.
“JACK, WHAT DID YOU DO???” She yells at him.
“Nothing! I touched nothing!” Jack says in his defense.
The entire scene would best be described as frightening. Within seconds, the entire ceiling of the basement is covered with escaped specters, all of them gathering their bearings and looking for a way out. Though not one of them is higher than a class D (Class C is Box Ghost), the sheer numbers can do severe damage in seconds. Thinking quickly, Sam grabs a Fenton Thermos off the table and flings it towards the Ghost-Boy.
“DANNY!!!”
Spotting it, he grabs the thermos and twists the lid off before aiming it at the ghost legion. Like a vacuum, it begins to inhale ghost after ghost, clearing them out of the room just as quick as they emerge from the Ghost Zone. Unfortunately, as the 20th ghost is sucked in, a red light flashes on the side of the Thermos.
“It’s full!” Danny yells, twisting on the lid and putting the thermos down. “Toss me another one!”
Sam does so, before also grabbing two more, keeping one and handing Tucker the other. The three then open them and begin trapping ghosts at triple the rate. Meanwhile, Maddie manages to find the emergency shutdown button and slams her fist down onto it. The doors of the portal slam shut, as Danny, Sam & Tucker mop up the remaining spirits, though a few manage to ghost their way out of FentonWorks and into the city streets.
Once the basement is ghost-free, there’s a moment of stunned silence, before Don inevitably breaks it. “That…was…so…AWESOME! We are gonna win awards for this show, man!”
“I think some of the ghosts have gotten loose.” Danny says. “I’m gonna go do a city-wide check.”
Maddie nods her head in agreement, but keeps a puzzled look on her face. “I…I don’t understand how this could happen. I mean, the failsafe programs should’ve kicked in to prevent this.”
Jack angrily turns toward Don & Henry. “Do you two have anything to do with this?”
“Jack, they’re way over there.” Maddie tells him. “The controls are here. There’s no way they could have done it.”
“Then how did we just release those ghosts and—?”
Again, the doors to the portal slide open, allowing more entities to spill out. Instinctively, Danny jumps in their path and sucks them back up with an empty Fenton Thermos. Maddie slams her fist down on the emergency button again, shutting the door as Danny fills the Thermos to capacity.
Danny breaths a sigh of relief as he sets the Thermos down. “Whew, that was a close one.”
His father however, is not so calm. “GRRRRR! How in blazes do these ghosts—?”
And again, the doors slide open. But Maddie slams down on the button, only allowing a few to escape.
At that moment, Sam catches the Ghost-Boy’s attention. “Danny, you have to go ghost and—!”
And yet again, the doors slide open. Maddie slams down on the button, closing the door as a few more escape. Tucker’s about to speak when Danny puts his hands up.
“EVERYBODY STOP!!!”
The room falls silent, and all eyes turn to Danny as he addresses the situation. “I think I know what’s going on.” He explains. “Every time someone says gh…the ‘G’ word, the Fenton Portal opens.”
Maddie finds herself on the same page as her son. “I think you’re right, Danny. A while ago, your father and I did program a voice password option into the Portal database for emergencies. Somehow it must’ve been activated.”
Jack begins to understand the situation. “You mean every time someone says Ghost, we—?”
And like clockwork, the doors slide open. Maddie slams down on the button before turning to her husband.
“Would you stop saying ‘ghost’, Jack!?” She yells, before covering her mouth, realizing she’s said it now. The doors, once again, slide open, and she slams down on the button, shutting them before recovering her mouth.
“Alright, look!” Danny says, getting everyone’s attention again. “Let’s just move out of the basement, so no one can open the doors again.”
They all agree, and quickly move toward the stairs. Danny & Sam lead the line, followed by Tucker, Maddie, Jack, Don & Henry, who’s still filming. As Danny reaches the top of the staircase though, the basement door swings open, and Jazz runs in.
“What’s going on? What’s with all the—?”
“DON’T SAY IT!!!”
The collective yell of everyone at her more than confuses the redhead about the situation. “What, don’t say ghost?”
And once more, the Fenton Portal doors open, and a flood of spirits make their exit. In unison, they all groan in frustration, especially Danny & Sam, who glare a hole right through Jazz.
“What did I do?”
SCENE 6
“Oh, this is so awesome!”
Henry now has his camera pointed to the sky, as he tries his best to follow Danny, who’s tracking down all the ghosts who’ve escaped and capturing them with the Fenton Thermos.
“Henry, tell me you’re getting this.” Don says.
“I’m trying.” Henry replies. “He’s…moving to fast, though.”
Failing magnificently at following Danny around, Henry zooms out and switches to a wide view, allowing him to film Danny in a wide area as he captures the last two escaped spirits from the Ghost Zone. His job complete, Danny exhaustedly floats back down to street level, where Sam rushes over to him.
“Well, I say you’ve put in enough overtime for today.” She says, referring to his ghost-hunting duties.
“You have no idea…” Danny answers, feeling a little sore as well. “I wish I did get a paycheck for this.”
Sam grins as she lovingly wraps her arms around his shoulders. “Well, it’s not a paycheck, but I have something to reward you with…”
Danny grins back at her, knowing exactly what she means. They close their eyes, and pucker their lips as they draw closer to each other, and…
“Uh, Danny?”
…Tucker’s voice ruins the moment. “No offense Tucker, but I’m trying to…”
Looking up, he spots the look of shock on Tucker’s face as he points towards FentonWorks. Turning in that direction, he understands why Tucker has that look…FentonWorks is apparently fading from existence. Before Danny can even react…the building is gone, basement & everything. All that is left in its spot…is a vacant lot. Danny’s home, along with everyone inside…is gone.
“Mom?…Dad?…Jazz?”
