Book One ~ Fire meets Water
Chapter One
They kept him chained and in the darkness for three weeks because he killed the guards that tried to stop him from escaping. He did not bend fire; he used his hands on the earth benders. Xin Fu had never seen such violence. Every bone that could possibly be broken was. It took fifteen of them to subdue the wild man… angry man. The blazing golden eyes of the former prince told Xin Fu his days were numbered.
They used his loyalty to capture him. He was loyal to his family they were loyal to greed and power. His father King Ozai was jealous of his son’s rising popularity. He feared that soon the people would want Zuko to rule. In his greed to maintain power, he used his daughter as a pawn. He sent word to Long Feng of his plans and the deceptive earth bender agreed to help. Long arranged a fake kidnapping of Azula at the hands of Xin Fu. Once the Prince heard of her captivity, he came to her aid. It was as he fought the men holding him that Azula struck him in the back. The lightening blast should have knocked him to the ground instantly but he only roared with pain and turned to face her.
His face must have been chilling because the always-stoic princess trembled and backed away. “Fear me sister; fear the night when I will come for you and father and all that betrayed me. Your time is short and your pain will be long. It is with these hands that I will seek my vengeance.” A few more of the earth benders died by his hands until he fell to his knees as the pain of the blast began to take its toll on him. A rock from Xin Fu finally stilled the prince.
Once Iroh heard of the Prince’s demise, he disappeared fearing for his own life some thought. Most knew it was to find his nephew and free him from those holding him. He had no army and it would be difficult with out one.
Azula did not return to the palace of her father. No one knew of where she went. Xin Fu was certain it would not matter once the Prince was free they would all burn.
He walked up the steps leading to the balcony where Long Feng sat enjoying his morning breakfast. The guards surrounding him seemed tense as they watched the billowing smoke float through the bars of the door to Zuko’s cell. He was awake and as usual angry.
“You should send him away.” Xin Fu glared at his partner with anger.
“He is a powerful man and will bring a hefty price when he is sold.” Long set down his tea and stared at the smoke coming from the door that held the former prince Zuko.
Xin Fu moved closer to the earth bender and lowered his voice. “You are a fool if you think he will not seek revenge against you and his father for what you have done.”
The glare from the dark eyes of the respected Long Feng did not scare the hardened warrior Fu there were other things to fear even if he now stayed in a cage.
“As I recall you helped bring him here. You and that Princess Azula tricked him into thinking she was in danger. I do not think that his sense of family will ever be the same and you are to blame for that.”
“No, you are to blame; your desire for power has helped King Ozai cement his kingdom. His son is the rightful heir and you, Ozai and his sister will burn for it.”
Long waved his hand and the guards moved closer and surrounded Xin. “Your words do not comfort me Fu. I sense your loyalty wavering. You have never been the same since you brought him here a month ago. What could he have said or done to make you so afraid of him?”
Long raised his cup to his lips for another drink but a swipe of Fu’s hand sent it crashing to the floor. The guards grabbed Fu as Long Feng stood and faced him.
“When you look into the eyes of a man betrayed by all that he loved and see not anger but certainty of your death at his hands you will fear. His fire will never end Feng. You have kept him from the sun but still it burns deep within him. It grows stronger every day.”
“Then I will kill him.”
Xin Fu began chuckling. “You cannot kill him who will do it? They all fear him. You cannot get close enough to him to kill him the heat is just too great. He could leave here whenever he wanted you have to see that. Why does he stay and allow you to hold him? You must send him away without prejudice. Find someone to take him far from here where no one knows of him or what we have done.”
“I will lose money for that.”
“You will lose your life if you do not heed my words Long Feng. What do you care for more your life or that coin in your pocket.”
A loud sound from below turned everyone’s attention to Zuko’s prison. The smoke coming from the cell began to increase. That only meant that Zuko was free of his chains again. The smoke became heavier as he came to the door of his cell. His dirty fingers came through the small slits of the cell to catch the sunlight.
The guards holding Fu released him and stared at the simple action from the fire prince. He only stayed to watch the fear in their eyes when he looked at them with his cold golden stare.
Long turned away from the cell as soon as the fingers of the Prince disappeared. “There is only one nation that does not know his face. They will arrive here in two weeks time. I will sell him to them.”
“Who are they?”
“They are the Water nation. King Hakoda has no dealings with Ozai ever since they had words 20 years ago over the fate of a small island that both claim is theirs. The island remains unclaimed and they have never spoken again.”
“King Hakoda has never seen the Prince?”
“He has never seen Ozai. Such mistrust exists between the two nations that they only communicated through letter couriers. I will give him the son of Ozai and we will be spared his curse.”
Long Feng watched Xin Fu nod in agreement.
The smoke began to flow from the cell again. “Let us hope he has not decided before then how he wants to end our lives.”

Southern Water tribe
The chuckling from the man asking for her daughter’s hand was beginning to annoy Ursa. The Queen of the Water nation rolled her eyes at the snorting, chocking sound coming from the respected warrior that sat at their table. She knew of her daughter’s strong dislike for Chief Wan because of his beliefs about what role women had in this world. They did not amount to much other then bearing children and doing what men told them.
Kya picked up her cup and spied a look at her daughter glaring at the man across from her.
“What woman would want nothing to look forward to in life but pleasing you?”
Wan smiled as he looked at her. “What woman knows what she wants?”
“I do not want you.”
Wan began chuckling again. Ursa set her cup down and glared at her husband Hakoda.
“You are young you have no business deciding what you want. I shall decide what you want.”
Hakoda said nothing but simply stared at the man that was working his way towards a beheading faster than anyone he had ever seen in his royal hall.
“You will decide nothing for me. I am perfectly capable of saying no to you and meaning it.”
“You women change your minds like the wind. I am rich and have much security to keep you safe. I am close to your parents so that we can see them from time to time when you give me children. I have many servants and I will allow you to make an occasional meal when I see fit to reward you. Although you will think I reward at night well enough and possibly reject going against anything I wish.”
There was silence from the high-strung Princess who was soon to be his wife as soon as he convinced her parents. She would have to be broken of course with questionable methods but he would achieve what he wanted when the captivity ended. She was so beautiful he had to have her. He had to have everything beautiful.
“You need an ice spike right in the …”
“Katara we do not speak as such…well not at the table anyway.”
The small smirk on the Queen’s face brought anger to Wan’s body. He faced the king with angry green eyes.
“Your daughter and wife need lessons on when and what to speak.”
King Hakoda raised an eyebrow at the powerful water bender disturbing the liquid in his cup. “My wife and daughter speak when they need to or want to. I am not here because I want to control them I am here because I love them. You need lessons on when and what to speak Chief Wan. A powerful water bender you are but that means nothing to me when you insult my dear ones in my own home.”
Wan chuckled. “Where are the others that should be here fighting me for her hand? Do you not see that her mood has run them all away? She is the most beautiful of women and suitors should be knocking down your door. You, King Hakoda should not be the one defending her honor the others men fighting for her hand should. I am the only one powerful enough to tame her spirit. I am the only one that wants her and you should be careful with what you say to me. Neither the Prince Sokka nor Bato are here to help you defend against my forces. You will not push me away from her I am determined to have her and you will accept this or else.”
“Or else what Chief Wan are you threatening your King?” Hakoda’s voice held no anger or malice he disguised well what was brewing inside of him. His dark eyes bore into the insolent man sitting at his table. The servants in the hall stopped working waiting for Wan’s reply that never came. The chief continued to stare at the King with a smile as he stood preparing to leave. He had extreme confidence in his power and he should he was their first and last line of defense in war.
Katara watched the man walked from the hall still wearing the smile as he disappeared around the corner. She would bow to no one. He was an abusive man that she could never love. She would not betray herself even for her family. She knew they would not want her too.
Hakoda reached out for her hand and squeezed it. “Perhaps you should have given him an ice spike in the ass.”
Kya chuckled and lightly struck her husband’s arm. “Hakoda what a thing to say he required two at least.”
Katara smiled but it faded. “He is right. There is only him.”
Kya frowned at her daughter’s saddened face. “They are weak my little heart. They have not the strength to be loyal or just as your father is. Do not sacrifice yourself because there are not halls full of young men eager to have you as a wife and not as a slave.”
Katara nodded but they could tell the words from Wan affected her. “I will retire.”
Hakoda watched her leave the table and sighed. “My son has been gone for three weeks now what does the Avatar want of him?”
“I do not know. He would not tell me his own mother.”
“It must be grave if you could not pry it from his lips. Bato will return in two days and we will discuss what must happen to chief Wan. He will not have my daughter.” Hakoda stood and offered his hand to his wife. Kya smiled and placed her hand in his mighty grip. A shiver of heat always ran through her body whenever he touched her.
She walked beside him leaning her body against his and sighing. “I want our daughter to know the joy of a mate that truly belongs to her as you and I do.”
Hakoda’s arm slowly circled her waist and pulled her tighter to his body. “She will know love my wife.”

Two weeks had passed and as always, the Water nation showed at their appointed time. They docked their ships and headed for the house of Long Feng with money and items to trade. The Water nation did not like Feng but Bato knew he could get whatever he needed and what he needed he was sure Feng had.
“Is this all you have.” Bato frowned at the thin and sick looking men Long Feng brought out to him for inspection on the sandy practice field the prisoners used for exercise.
“What exactly are you looking for?”
Bato leaned closer to the untrustworthy earth bender. “I need someone who can take care of a problem someone dear to me is having.”
“What sort of problem?” Xin Fu asked.
“He is a persistent suitor that is not wanted or needed. He is a very powerful bender. His war with Hakoda would rip the kingdom in half and he knows this.”
Long Feng smiled and waved his hand towards the men standing before Zuko’s cell. Bato saw the smoke coming through the bars and looked at the two earth benders with suspicion. “What is this?”
“He can take care of your problem very easily.”
Bato frowned at the two men then walked towards the cell and peered into the darkness. “What is your name?”
“Li” The response was dry and emotionless.
“You wish to leave here.”
Zuko smiled from beside the door unknowingly to the man at the door. “I will leave here with you.”
Xin Fu nodded to the guard with the keys to unlock Zuko’s cell. Bato stepped back and noticed that the two earth benders had moved from their original position beside him. The door creaked as it opened and the heat poured from it. Bato stepped back again as the man inside stepped out.
He was a tall, well-muscled man that apparently loved dirt. It covered every inch of his body and hair. Bato noticed the anger that burned in his eyes as he stared at his captors.
“He needs a bath and some clothing.”
Long Feng waved his hand and some women with buckets of water and washcloths approached Zuko. He smiled and raised his arms above his head and they began to undress him and then wash his naked body. Zuko’s eyes never left Long Feng and Xin Fu as the women worked on getting rid of the dirt.
“He will do well in ridding you of your problem.”
Bato raised and eyebrow at the voice behind him. He was beginning to wonder what this man did to be here. He did not want to bring Princess Katara more problems than she already had. The way the man’s golden gaze did not move from the earth benders made Bato question his decision. The prisoner’s body possessed scars and bruises. His burned face added to his anger Bato could feel coming from him. He would not let the women touch it. This was not a good idea but neither was leaving Chief Wan free reign on Katara’s life.
Zuko remained silent as the women dried his hair and body. He would need an army to get to his father and he could not recruit one in the cell. He would return to the south and do as this man requested. If he found that this persistent suitor was worthy to his cause he would not kill him; he would help him take the Princess and rip Hakoda’s Kingdom in half if he helped him march on the fire nation. He knew what he had to do and nothing would turn him from it.
They watched their former prisoner walk out of their care without a glance back at them. He looked quite important wearing the long black robes and his waist length hair pulled up into a high ponytail because he would not let them cut it. He would return for them of that they were sure it was the only reason he did not attack he wanted them looking over their shoulder.
“He cannot hurt us from halfway across the world. We are spared his wrath Xin Fu why do you frown?”
“We are spared his wrath but for how long? Revenge drives him and he will do all that he needs to do to get back to us. We may not be first but we will feel his vengeance.”
Long Feng looked at the disappearing form of Zuko as the heavy wooden doors to the gate surrounding his land closed. “Then we must make sure that he never returns to us. He will die while in the care of the Water tribe. I will send the Dai Li and you can start acting like man and not a woman.”
Long Feng walked by his associate with determined steps. “Fear has no gender but our death will. Maybe you will see that when you beg for your life and regret siding with Ozai as I have.”
Long Feng saw some of his servants come from the house with Xin Fu’s things and turned towards the broken warrior. “Where are you going?”
“I am getting a head start and I suggest that you do the same. I have eyes in the world as you do. They tell me Iroh is alive and well in the care of the Avatar. He will come looking for his nephew and your people will betray you. Tell me what will you say to the Dragon of the West when he comes?”
Long Feng did not answer and walked into his house. “Ready a mount for me I travel to the fire nation.”
