Prologue:
Meridian Prison in Cavigor
Midnight.
Darkness, but one single candle light.
By the first sight of daybreak, I must be prepared, yet I’m very afraid. My hands go pale and trembling and my throat aches from my previous sobbing.
I dare not sleep. I sit now in a dreadful prison as I recalled my life that I spent with him as I recalled. The prince and ruthless tyrant of the kingdom of Meridian, whom I’ve loved for all these years.
Ruled by his side, became his princess, bore him the son that he wanted and yet all these years, I thought our love was eternal, but I was wrong.
And what about my child-what would become of him? Will he be told that his mother was once princess of Meridian? Or will his father try to erase all remembrance of me? If I could be granted by just one wish (other than the wish for life itself) it would be that my son knows the truth about me- Gwendolyn…Gwen, the doomed princess.
Chapter One
Childhood
I was always the jealous type when I see a beautiful young girl with a handsome young man, a.k.a. my sister with her betrothed, the young lord, Herald.
My mother, Lady Juliana, was also a great beauty and it was evident that my sister, Serene, who favored her, would be a beauty as well.
I was a severe disappointment to my parents, for I was not a comely child. I had inherited the dark looks of my father, Sir William. My mother was a high-born daughter of a knight and was a member of the court of Meridian. My father lacked both title and wealth, but he was intelligent and ambitious. He meant to make himself important in the court of the royal family of Meridian. Serene and I was part of his scheme, but soon, I’ll be the one with the court of Meridian under my control and unbending will.
I know I was not a great beauty like my mother and sister, but I’ve develop into a highly intelligent young girl of age thirteen. I’ve also inherited my mother’s long blond hair and my father’s sharp blue eyes.
My parents feared that I would not find a suitable husband to marry, but they were wrong, not knowing that during a festival in Meridian that I would find my husband and love.
It was the harvest festival and everyone was excited. People were dancing, cheering and laughing. I’ve just passed my thirteenth birthday in the spring and was part of the festivities as one of the dancers and so was my sister. I wore a green and black flowing gown while my sister wore a blue-purple dress.
It was during the dance is where I saw him, sitting on the right side of a lovely young woman, pale blond moonlight hair, green hawk-like eyes and a crème pale skin. He was the prince of Meridian. His name was Phobos.
This wasn’t the first time I’ve met him. When I was four years old, my parents took me and my sister, who was seven, took us to the palace of Meridian. Before we went to court, our mother told us that when the queen and king enters or leave, everyone must rise. The gentlemen bow low and the ladies drop to their knees in deep curtsy.
At last we stood in the crowd that had gathered, trumpets heralded their approach and I strained a glimpse of the royal family. The queen and king walked along side by side, next to each other, looking stern and powerful and right behind them was their son, who was also four years old, Phobos. He was beautiful as he walk behind his parents.
Wanting him to notice me, I raised my hand, waving and said hi which was a bit loud. The young prince turned to me and said hi back and continued on walking. My father observed my behavior and immediately pulled me back down. I was later punish for my outburst with a half of dozen whacks to the back of my legs-but I never forgot that moment when the prince’s eyes met mine in the midst of the crowd
As the harvest festival was over, Serene spoke to me about her seeing the prince having his eyes on me.
“Do you plan on being his lover?”
“Of course not. Anyone can be his lover, but I intended on being his princess.” I said haughtily.
“What an amusing imagination you have, dear sister.” Serene laughed.
“I’m quite serious,” I declared firmly. “Wait and see- someday I shall be the princess of Meridian and you will bow down before me.”
And I flounced proudly away from my sister.
Chapter 2
The Game of Love
With the first cool days of autumn and sister being married, I enjoyed myself, lodging around my favorite spot where no one could bother me. As I relaxed as the cool breeze hit my face, I heard a noise behind me. Startled, I turn to see a young teenage boy who was about my age, mumbling as he pick up a rock and threw it at the stream. But this boy was no ordinary, it was prince Phobos, not noticing me, I spoke up.
“Hello.”
The prince turned to face me and replied. “Hello.”
I got up and bowed down to him. “Your highness.”
“How did you know I’m royalty?” he asked.
“A good guess, your highness.” I replied.
“What is your name?” Phobos asked.
“Gwendolyn, my lord.”
“Gwendolyn.” Said Phobos. He walks toward me and gently cups my chin. “I like Gwen better.”
After that, he left, leaving me shock and most of all, stunned.
The following I got a letter from the prince, saying that he wanted to see me. My parent, sister and I were stunned that the prince has invited me to the palace. I got dress and did my hair and headed straight to the palace.
As I followed a young page, I entered the prince’s chambers. Prince Phobos sprawled at his ease behind a table. The chamber was empty, save for the prince and me. Behind him, I glimpsed an immense bed with several thick mattresses and curtains of black and maroon velvet trimmed.
“Your Highness,” I said as I bowed before him.
Prince Phobos leaned toward me, his elbows on the table, his green eyes lively, and his smile devilish. “Gwen. You do please me greatly.”
“It pleases me that you’re pleased, prince.” I replied, still on my knee.
Phobos got up and walks towards me and took my hands and leaned me to the table where we played card games and talked. He told me about his mother’s pregnancy and that she is due with the new heir in the spring which greatly upset him, because if the child is born female, that would bump him back from succeeding the throne since that is the law of the kingdom.
“Don’t worry your highness. Hopefully, it will it won’t turn out that way.” I said as I touch his hand.
“I hope so, too.” Said Phobos as he, too, touch my hand.
And from that moment, I’ve felt love between us.
Later that night as I lay in bed, I thought about winning Prince Phobos’s heartfelt love and devotion. And then a nearly overwhelming truth struck me: If I were Prince Phobos’s wife, I would also be his princess.
Princess Gwendolyn.
No.
Princess Gwen.
Jubilantly, I swung my feet up and down the air, whispering. “Princess Gwen! Princess Gwen!”
I imagined how the cheering throngs would one day call out my name.
Chapter 3
Courtship
I had weeks to consider the compelling goals to which I aspired-to marry the prince and to become his princess and wife.
One night as I was reading in my studies, a messenger arrived with a note from the prince. In gestures, I bade the messenger wait. I call for Nell, my nursemaid, to help me dress in my finest green and black velvet outfit quickly. I had my hair in a bun with the rest of my hair down. My hands tremble as I wait for Nell to be done dressing me.
As I headed outside as winter was about to set in, I walk with pride, waiting to see the prince again.
“Lovely Gwen,” said the prince as he saw me.
How handsome he look as he stood before me. He almost looks like a god to me.
“You cannot imagine how much I have missed you. Every hour without seeing your sweet face seemed like…like an eternity!”
I blushed. “Your highness, you have been in my thoughts as well.”
“Gwen!” he cried, “I have been struck by the dart of love! You have made me weak with desire and lust!”
“I can no longer come to you.” I said as I saw his face turned into sorrow.” I’ll be found out and my good name will suffer.”
“Then, my dear Gwen, I shall come to you.”
Prince Phobos seized the opportunity to visit me. Whenever he arrived, I sneak out and we got to the spot where we first met. We basically talk about stuff and how we want things in life.
As the months went by, I felt myself grow attached to the prince that I’ve never felt before, but I wonder if he feels the same way about me.
Then, on one dreadful day, my childhood basically ended. My parents informed me that I was betrothed to a young man named Hal, a young lad of a very wealth family.
“No, I don’t want to marry him. I don’t even know him.” I shouted.
“Gwendolyn, darling,” my mother said, confronting. “He’ll make a good husband for you and you’ll be happy.”
“I don’t wish to marry him and that’s final.” I yelled even louder.
“That is enough, young lady,” my father roared in fury. “You will marry Hal or so help me, I’ll disown you and you’ll be nothing but a sham. Do you understand me?”
With tears beginning to rise, I nodded with reluctant.
Later that day, I snuck out of the house and walk to my favorite spot. As I walk, I thought about telling the prince about my recent engagement. Will he take it in a good way or a bad way? As I got there, I saw him waiting for me and I could tell that I was already here. Taking a deep breath, I walk toward him.
“What took you so long?”
“I was…um…busy with something very important.”
“Like what?”
It was now or never.
“I’m engaged.”
He stared at me as if someone had punched him in the stomach. “What do you mean you’re engaged?”
“I just learn I should be married to him before the end of the year.” I whimpered as I started to cry. I was about to run, when I felt something grab my waist.
“Your highness, please don’t…”
But I didn’t get to finish as Phobos dipped his head, and pressed his lips to mine in a tender kiss. I came to rest against him as his arms slowly slipped around me, pulling me close against his body. I think we both realized that we were making ourselves vulnerable, but at the moment neither of us cared. I sighed as I pulled him closer, allowing him to deepen the kiss until both of us were breathless. Once the contact had broken, we stared at each other for several moments.
“Your highness, I…”
He placed his finger on my lips, silencing me. “Call me Phobos.”
“Phobos.” I whispered.
We resumed our kisses, made me forget my engagement and other possible things in the world.
Chapter 4
Love and Passion Anew
A year has gone by and things in Meridian were looking too well. The queen and king have disappeared without a trance and the young princess that was born in the early spring was way too young to rule a kingdom by herself, so the crown was turned over to her brother until she is fit to rule. But that would not happen either; the young babe was taken away from her brother and disappeared into the night. I could tell the Phobos was enraged by this.
I came to see him when I can, but my marriage was coming soon and I know that I won’t be able to see him again.
“You know that my marriage was coming soon.” I said as I visited Phobos.
“Yes, I know.” He replied, quite disappointed.
I grab his hand and look at him. “We’ll be in close contact, won’t we?”
Phobos gently grabs my chin and look at me, lovingly. “I want to be more than that.”
He kissed me with great passion and hunger. It was breath taking, but it went into a bit much more.
Taking me into a room, he kissed his way along my neck, gently tugging down the sleeve to expose my shoulder. I sighed, happily and nervously, when he planted a kiss there, and as I was removing his royal garb from his body.
Eventually his hand went to the middle of my back, where the ties were for my dress. He tugged on one end to loosen them, and then slowly turned me around. I looked up at him, as he kissed each blushing cheek, his hands holding my face; then he kissed me on my delicate mouth. His hands traveled down my neck, teasing my throat with gentle caresses, before skimming over my shoulders.
Slowly, he slid my gown down my arms, setting them free of the fabric; he then placed his hands on my waist, and pushed the dress off my hips, where it puddles onto the floor.
I carefully stepped out of the dress, and kicked them out of the way, along with my shoes. Then I gave the prince a light push, sending him down to the bed.
We kissed for several minutes, lying side by side, until I pushed him on his back, and straddled him. He was mildly surprised by my aggressiveness, but hardly felt it appropriate to protest, especially when my fingers began to wander over his chest, followed closely by my lips. He hissed when my tongue darted out and circled one of his nipples, while my fingers gently tugged at the other.
“You look beautiful,” he murmured.
I smiled at him. “Kiss me,” I ordered.
He did just that, claiming my mouth with his, exploring every bit of it with lips and tongue, before continuing his exploration of the rest of my body. He stroked my soft skin, causing me to shudder and gooseflesh to appear. By the time his fingers felt the light weight of my breasts, and brushed against my nipples, they were hardened peaks, pebbled with my desire and the chill of the room.
“Oh,” I moaned softly.
My eyes were closed, my mouth open; light breaths drew in and out of my mouth rapidly as he touched me. He smiled at my expression, then dipped his head to my breasts, and caught one of the small, pale nipples in his mouth. I moaned again, and clutched his head, entwining my fingers in his hair, as if unwilling to let him move away from what he was doing.
He shifted slightly so that he was once again lying beside me. He slid a hand behind my neck, so that my head rested upon his upper arm; he let his forearm drape over my body until his hand found my breast again. His mouth latched onto my other breast, his tongue tracing my nipple, while his fingers mimicked the action on my other breast. I groaned quietly at the attention, my hips bucking unconsciously. I could feel him smiled against my skin.
I pushed his mouth away from mine, gasping. “Oh, please, my lord! Please, I want you inside me now…”
“If I do this, your future husband would never get the chance of claiming your innocence.”Phobos replied.
“I don’t care about him. I only care about you.” I replied.
He smiled at me with a devilish look as he kissed me in hunger and passion.
With a smile upon his face, he pushed into me. I felt a sharp gasp escape my lips as an extreme pain filled that area. I felt my body arc up in response, bringing me closer to him. Phobos slightly gasped in shock as my inner walls tightened around him; the sure sign of my virginity.
I felt the pain spread all over as he continued to push into me deeper with each passing second. I shuddered in pain…and pleasure as he started to find a pace. The pain dwindled to a wave of pleasure and I embraced it with turmoil and love.
Phobos panted as the pressure inside built up. He clenched a fist as it quickly became too much for him to bear. He finally couldn’t restrain it; he had to do it. He let out a groan of pleasure as he finally released his seed into my body, claiming her right there. I felt pain all over accompanied by an extreme heat. I winced in agony and pleasure.
Phobos collapsed on top of me, exhausted. I gasped as his weight pushed me down further into the bed. He looked at me in the eyes with a gleam of triumph in his. He said in a satisfied tone,
“You are now mine forever more.”
He grabbed me into a tight embrace. He used that moment to claim my lips with his own, and his tongue slid deeply into my mouth, making the feeling of warmth erupt in my chest.
I felt him leave me, and an extreme weakness escaped into me. He softly claimed my lips again, making a melting sensation form within me.
He lay next to me, resting his head on a pillow, took me into his grip, and gently held me, as if I were made of glass. I blushed as he gently kissed me, the melting sensation coming back. He rested my head against his chest, and cooed as he brought me down comforter over them,
“Let’s get some sleep.”
I felt an overwhelming tiredness hit me, but I found myself smiling; I actually felt…loved by him. Was this my mind’s way of going crazy? On the other hand, did he genuinely care about me? I struggled vainly to keep my eyes open, but my smile never faded.
He noticed the smile, and felt one form upon his face as well; he had me. He said softly just before closing his eyes,
“Good night, my love.”
I finally couldn’t repress it; my eyes shut, and I joined Phobos in a deep sleep.
Chapter 5
Discovery and Marriage Propsal
Three months have passed since I lost my virginity to Phobos and when I have a chance to be with him, we spent our time together as we give each other pleasure. Then early one cool morning, I felt queasy when I woke up and decided to remain in bed for awhile. The idea of breakfast revolted me.
After awhile, a knock came at the door. I shrugged into my robe and padded over to the door to answer.
"Are you all right, miss?" Nellie stood there; ready to change the linens on my bed. "You're usually up early on the days."
"I'm rather sick to my stomach," I said. "My stomach has been bothering me for several days now." Stepping aside, I said, "But don't let me keep you from your work. I should get up now, anyway."
As Nellie walked into the room, my hands suddenly flew to my mouth and I ran to grab the chamber pot. Holding it close to my mouth, I threw up in great heaving waves.
Nellie looked down at me with understanding. "Miss, when was the last time you had your monthlies?"
"It's been a couple of months," I admitted as I wiped my mouth with a handkerchief.
Nellie looked at me closely. "I think I know what it is," she said. "You're with child."
"How could this happen?" I wailed
"You and the prince spend a good deal of time together," Nellie reminded me, raising an eyebrow at my naïve attitude. "I'm surprised this didn't happen sooner."
"Are you sure about this?" I sat down weakly.
"Pretty sure, but time will tell."
"Please keep this to yourself for now, I don’t want my parents finding out yet," I said. "I want to tell them myself and the prince, too."
"Of course, miss," she said. "I'm sure he'll be delighted to find out he's to become a father."
I wasn't so sure about that, but I kept her thoughts to myself.
After Nellie had changed the bed and left, I stood to gaze at my reflection in the mirror. I put my hands on my stomach, but could not yet feel much difference. Yet, Nellie's words had the ring of truth to me. I had no doubt that I was indeed pregnant.
Walking in the palace’s garden with Phobos, My heart was beating madly as I tried to summon the courage to tell him my news.
"What is it, Gwen?" Phobos asked. "You usually aren't this quiet. What is bothering you?"
"Let's sit down," I said as we came upon a bench at the far end of the garden. Once we had seated ourselves, I continued, "I've got something to tell you."
"Yes?"
"I don't quite know how to tell you this...."
Phobos interrupted me with a sigh of exasperation.
"I'm with child!" I blurted out.
"Oh," Phobos said with a distinct lack of enthusiasm. "Well, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised." He sighed loudly again. "We haven't exactly been anything approaching chaste," he said dryly.
I turned away from him. "I was hoping you would have been happier about this."
"You have to give me time to get used to it," he said. "I've never considered fatherhood before. I'm not sure that I like it."
"Well, I'm going to have this baby, whether you like it or not," I snapped in a rare show of temper.
Phobos chuckled heartily, "Ah, you've got some spirit after all. I was beginning to wonder." Serious once again, he said, "Don't worry, Gwen. Our child will be taken care of."
I gave him a hesitant smile, hoping he was sincere.
“But, what am I going to do? My parents don’t know anything about this yet.” I said with worry.
“Don’t worry, we’ll talk to them…together.”
Talking to my parents was the last thing on my mind and I knew that they won’t take it lightly which apparently they didn’t.
My mother didn’t utter a word, though she was shock but my father said basically everything about this.
“I can’t believe you’re pregnant and you knew that you’re betrothed.” My father yelled.
“Sir William, if I may speak?” asked Phobos.
“Of course, your highness.”
“Let your daughter have the child. The child will be taken care of by both its mother and father.”
“Your highness, what are you trying to say?” I asked, even though I knew the answer already.
“I’m saying marry me, Gwen and I’ll take care of you and the child together.” Said Phobos as he kneeled before me.
“Yes, yes.” I said as tears rolled down my eyes.
Phobos got up and hugged me, deeply. As I was wrapped under his arms, I realized I’ve achieved my long awaited dream: to be the princess of Meridian and the wife of Prince Phobos.
I’ve done it. I’ve finally done it. Meridian get ready for your new princess.
